Is Joe Wurzelbacher related to Charles Keating — and does it matter?

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 16, 2008 05:12 PM

Scroll for update…Eisenstadt is a hoaxer

That’s been the left-wing blogger obsession all day. It started with a post from GOP blogger Martin Eisenstadt, who says that Joe Wurzelbacher the Plumber is a “close relative” of Robert Wurzelbacher, who is the son-in-law of Charles Keating. Robert Wurzelbacher served time for his role in the Keating 5 S&L scandal, gave a lot of money to Republicans, and is retired in Cincinnati. There is still no clear indication how exactly they are related and what “close” means.

I asked a reporter on scene in Ohio to check on the claim. He told me that Wurzelbacher was asked this morning at an impromptu press conference outside his house whether he’s related to Keating, and the reporter said Wurzelbacher answered that he didn’t know anything about that. I’ve asked the reporter to follow up and ask specifically if Wurzelbacher is related to Robert Wurzelbacher. Still waiting to hear back.

FYI, there is no mention of the issue in this NYTimes piece published at 1:30pm Eastern. Several left-wing blogs have also erroneously misidentifed a totally separate and unrelated “Joe Wurzelbacher” in Cincinnati as Joe the Plumber — and quietly backtracked after wetting their pants over that find.

The Keating connection claim has sent the left into conspiratorial frenzy. Joe is a plant! Joe is a liar! Joe is a [profanity] member of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy programmed by John McCain!

Insane.

Obama dropped in on Wurzelbacher’s neighborhood, not vice versa. And there are plenty of “close relatives” in families who have nothing to do with each other, do not speak to each other, and stay away from each other’s politics and business.

But Team Obama will grasp at any straw to bring this guy down. I’ll have more on Joe The Plumber Derangement Syndrome in my syndicated column tomorrow.

Update: Well, this explains the Keating/Wurzelbacher hoax. The person who spread the rumor is a hoaxer.

Remember it was Michelle O who first brought the sacrifice issue up (unless I’m mistaken).

Here is her famous “our souls are broken” speech:

We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another — that we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done.

That is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this who understands that. That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.

It’s t-shirts that call perfectly normal reasonable women c***s, it’s movies/books about killing a president you don’t like, it’s digging up dirt on a normal working guy who had the hubris to ask a question, it’s screeds written by people with the intellect of a 12-year old in Rolling Stone, it’s entertainers saying that someone can’t go to NYC cuz they’ll be gang-raped by her “big black brothers”, it’s being called racist every day cuz you think the half-black guy’s head is way up his ass on policy, it’s being told that we’re gonna have a race war if the half-black guy doesn’t win simply for being half-black, it’s being called “homophobe” and “woman-hater” constantly, it’s being lectured on being energy independence by the very people who KEEP us from being energy-independent, etc etc etc and on and on…

I just can’t take it anymore. I’m not a leader, but if some new William Wallace rose up out there somewhere, I’d follow him.

This guy is full of it

As usual, a lefty trying to obfuscate the point. It does not matter WHO Joe the Plumber is, what matters is Obama’s words to him, his policies, and his stance on taxes and redistribution of wealth. Remember, Obama was in Joe’s neighborhood, Joe didn’t opt to go to one of the anointed one’s rallies. Obama stepped in it bigtime and the left can’t throw out enough trash to cloud the issues.

Was thinking about this on my way to class tonight.

What does it matter who Joe the Plumber is, more than it matters what he represents?

And – more important – Barack Obama’s answer to Joe’s question?

Joe represents people who work hard, who want to reap the benefits of the work they put in.

Obama stands in opposition to that. His answer made it explicitly clear that Joe’s success needs to be “spread around” because, darn it, Joe just worked harder than the next guy.

Don’t believe me? Scott Adams – the man behind Dilbert – said the same thing, and he’s hardly a “right-winger”:

In my last post I joked that Obama wants to take my money and give it to people who don’t work as hard as I do. As with all gross generalizations, there are plenty of exceptions. But how does it hold up as a generalization?

When I was a kid, I was mowing lawns, working on my uncle’s farm, shoveling snow, washing dishes, waiting tables, and anything else I could do to save for college. Meanwhile I worked hard enough in school to graduate as valedictorian, getting a few small scholarships that helped a lot. My mother took a job on an assembly line to help pay for my college, while my dad worked his job in the post office during the day and painted houses on nights and weekends.

In college, I generally had two or three jobs along with my full course load. After college, at my first job, I got in the habit of waking around 4 am so I could put in a good twelve hours before going to night school to learn computer programming. I tried several times to use my meager programming skills to start my own business while continuing to work full time. I almost always worked nights and weekends trying to get ahead.

Eventually I got into graduate school and worked full time while taking classes nights and doing homework most of the weekend. That was the hardest three years of my life, work-wise.

And then there was Dilbert. For the first six years I kept my day job and made Dilbert comics nights, weekends, and holidays. I didn’t take a day off for about ten years. At one point I was doing all of that plus writing a book that became The Dilbert Principle. The only time I saw the sun was walking to the mailbox. And I believe that all of that hard work was necessary for the good things that happened.

The average work week is something like 35 hours. For most of my work life I worked about twice that much. I’m writing this blog post on the 4th of July, and have several deadlines to satisfy. So yes, as a generalization, Obama promises to take a large chunk of my hard-earned money and transfer it primarily to people who don’t work as hard. That’s just a fact.

So what does it matter of Joe’s a plumber, a stock broker, an inventor? The principle is the same:

OBAMA punishes success and rewards laziness.

Answer – Lawyers like Barry should know they need to be careful about opening doors. Like this:

Barack Obama has a half-brother named George who lives in a hut in Kenya.

    Shall we go there, Barry?

And just for fun, remember -

    More Joe Biden:

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe Reports: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said Thursday morning that the Democratic ticket is more worried about “Joe the gas station owner” than Joe the plumber because, unlike Joe Wurzelbacher, the plumber who stole the show at Wednesday’s presidential debate, most “Joes” are not making $250,000 a year.

“We’re worried about Joe the guy who owns the gas station, the barber, the grocer,” the Democratic vice-presidential nominee told Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer. “Ninety-eight percent of the small business people in America make less than $250,000 a year, and they’re going to get a real break under our plan. Joe the plumber, whose making over $250,000, is not going to get any more additional tax cuts with us.”

Keep up the good work, Joe! And may I say I look forward to a little class warfare which pits Joe the gas station owner against Joe the plumber. Maybe it could be turned into a reality show.
