Bill Ayers at University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Revolt brewing
Yesterday, I told you about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s decision to feature Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers as a keynote speaker for its 100th anniversary celebration (link).
There’s a backlash brewing.
Reader Jon in Nebraska e-mails: “The University of Nebraska is already starting to lean towards the Ayers decision being a bad one. It is not a full out revolt, but I think enough people are against this, that the decision may well be overturned. We can only hope.”
Reader Mark, a student in the University of Nebraska system forwarded his e-mail to the chancellor:
Chancellor Perlman,
As a student in the University of Nebraska system (UNO), I am writing to express my disapproval of the invitation extended to William Ayers to speak at the 100-year anniversary of the founding of UNL’s Teachers College reported in the Lincoln Journal Star.
While the article stresses that no student fees, state money or taxpayer funds will be used to pay for his honorarium, that is only a minor point. The appearance of William Ayers on the UNL campus so close to the election could appear as an endorsement of his political beliefs and those of Barack Obama. The University should refrain from any activity that could be construed as an endorsement of any political candidate, either in terms of payment or use of facilities. Unlike other universities whose students have expressed their disapproval of a speaker by throwing pies in their face or disrupting their speeches, I support the airing of all points of view at an institution of higher learning. This man’s point of view as an educator may be valid and even interesting, but rewarding his past admitted atrocities and recent expression of his desire to “do more”, goes beyond a simple exchange of ideas.
I also find it disheartening that the university could not find a keynote speaker for an event commemorating 100 years of teacher education who had not admittedly planted bombs and engaged in other terrorist activites. The commemoration is an event worthy of praise and I’m sure there are plenty of keynote speaker candidates who have not been photographed standing on the american flag.

I am a just a normal middle-aged republican Nebraska mother(there are lot’s of us!). I am OUTRAGED over the universities invitation to have Bill Ayers as a Keynote speaker. I have started an email campaign among my friends to have them contact the University Chancellor, The Board of Regents and the Alumni Association to express their opinions on this terrible disgrace to our University and our Wonderful State. Nebraska is a true “red” state, with a football team (Go Big Red) to match….never did I think that association with the color red could stand for it’s Universities political affiliations.

University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken and some members of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Thursday called the decision to invite William Ayers to NU’s Lincoln campus next month “poor judgment.”
Ayers, a founder of a radical group that bombed public buildings in protest of the Vietnam War, is scheduled to be a keynote speaker Nov. 15 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Education and Human Sciences’ student research conference. The conference is part of a two-day celebration honoring the college’s 100th anniversary.
Ayers, a distinguished education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was invited to UNL to share his expertise on topics like social justice and urban educational reform, said Marjorie Kostelnik, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences.
The Woods Fund of Chicago, for which Sen. Barack Obama and William Ayers once served as board members, is a sister organization to the Woods Charitable Fund in Lincoln.
The Woods Charitable Fund began in 1941 and provides grants to such areas as human services, art, culture and education. In 1994, it divided into two organizations — the original fund in Lincoln and a new one in Chicago — said Pam Baker, executive director of the Lincoln fund.
The two funds are informally related but have separate boards, assets and projects, Baker said. The Lincoln fund has not worked with either Obama or Ayers on any projects, she said.
But some NU leaders aren’t happy.
“While I believe that the open exchange of ideas and the principles of academic freedom are fundamental to a university, I also believe the decision to have Ayers on a program to celebrate the college’s Centennial represents remarkably poor judgment,” Milliken said in a statement.
“The University of Nebraska in no way condones Ayers’ past terrorist acts, which I consider reprehensible.”
It’s true that embracing academic freedom sometimes means welcoming controversial viewpoints, Regents Chairman Chuck Hassebrook of Lyons said.
“But at the same time, the authority we grant to the faculty to decide what to teach and who to invite comes with a responsibility to use that authority and that freedom with sound judgment,” Hassebrook said. “In this case, I think, that was violated.”
Said Regent Charles Wilson of Lincoln: “It was bad judgment to invite someone who has such a despicable history to participate in an event which is supposed to be a celebration. Anybody who thought this wouldn’t come up is probably naive.
“It’s just very unfortunate.”
Another reader e-mails: “As a native Nebraskan, and retired staff member of the UNL system, I am appalled at the decision of these people to invite William Ayers to speak, although “the University will not expend its own funds.” It’s amazing the chutzpah of these people. This is a free country and everyone has a right to their opinions, but since when do we give a public speaking opportunity to an avowed terrorist, who except for technicalities should be in jail, along with his lovely Bernadine.”
And from reader Mike, a rejoinder to Obama’s “I was only 8 years old” defense:
Obama can claim he was 8 when Ayers was a terrorist, but cannot use the defense when Ayers stood on the US flag in 2001. I find the picture speaks everything wrong with the left.

I guess after the US forces have killed so many potential college speakers in the War On Terror, we are left with only these second rate terrorists.
Really the embarrassing thing scheduling Ayers is that they couldn’t get someone who has killed an innocent person in the last 5 years.
There is really only one way that Ayers’ presence in Lincoln could be justified:
I’d pay to see Ayers and Herbie Husker go at it in a no-holds-barred cage match of death.

As was stated previously in another post in this blog, what would the press say if McCain had begun his political career in the house of Tim McVeigh?
First of all, he wouldn’t! He would have told McVeigh to drop dead and not even show up. But what did Obama do? He accepted Ayres’ invitation willingly. That simple fact of difference speaks volumes!

I think that that Mr Ayers will probably not be in attendance at this event.

I laughed at them and told them to ask The Fat One. I haven’t received another call.

The best way to have an impact is for the alumni to threaten to withhold donations. This happened when the then President of the College of William and Mary tried to turn the College into Berkeley East. He is gone because the alumni and citizenry refused to take no for an answer. The folks in Nebraska can change this – but they had also better be looking for a new College President if they want to stop this insidious behavior on the part of the faculty and the radical left wing that inhabits just about every campus.

I feel like, with instances like this one, that ’60’s radicals like Ayers have won. They’ve been able to infiltrate not only higher education, but public education, and political office. They’re able to influence someone who might become our next president. These radical lefties came of age in the ’60’s and did everything to disrupt, overturn, and dump on what was good in our country.
There are many babyboomers who need to account for the malaise they’ve perpetrated on this country. They’ve sowed the seeds of hate more than anything Republicans say against Obummer in criticism. Even my own mother, whom I’ve disagreed with recently about the “evil rich,” hates these people, and believe me, she works with them everyday as a computer programmer at a college.
It hurts to even say this, but us conservatives are outnumbered by these left-wing fanatics. They’ve done their job well. They’ve indoctrinated the younger generations into believing their drivel in a society that’s not interested in intelligent discourse or refuting their propaganda. I don’t think the univeral balance will be reset until many of these people, like Ayers, simply die out.
University of Nebraska should have never invited this creep. The last thing Ayers stands for is education. More like indoctrination and political indoctrination at its finest. The field of education has been perverted by people like Ayers. The last thing the University of Nebraska should be doing is inviting a person who has done everything to make public education the joke it has now become.
I hate to say this but I’m really not surprised. Academia will never change and is much of a joke as public education is these days. And I’m saying this as a former Social Studies educator. So I’ve experienced this first hand.
In my humble opinion, though we feel it may be undeserving, each and every one of us get so many chances. Every day brings a new chance to get it right. When those are used up, there never was enough time. It’s all relative I guess. I personally don’t think it has anything to do with fear of reprisal, or who you know.

Good question. I don’t know why the case against him could not be brought up again. Hey. Maybe Obama, if elected, will pre-emptively pardon him and any other of his terrorist associates still alive, just in case someone figures out a way to charge him again.
Speaking of pardons… I can see Obama pardoning the whole lot of the enemy combatants at Guantanamo and elsewhere. Think about it, Bill Clinton’s first act as president was “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Pardoning a whole lot of scum would be perfectly in character for Obama.

Fraunces Tavern is located on the corner of Broad St. and Pearl St., the southern most part of Manhattan, just a couple of blocks from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. I pass it often and whenever I encounter tourists reading the several bronze plaques on the building, I stop and tell them, “Yes, this is where Geo. Washington said goodbye to his troops. It is also the site of a terrorist bombing in 1975 that killed four people. The terrorist organization was the FALN from Puerto Rico. Any number of Universities would leap at the chance to give bin Laden an honorary doctorate, and he’d end up partnering a weekend political show with Stephanopoulus (sp?), with occasional guest gigs on Letterman and Larry King. Just about every blurb or reference to Ayers in the media labels him as a “distinguished” education professor. Who the hell gave him that distinction? What has he done to deserve it? It seems to me it’s the media trying to mainstream him.
And another college (STANFORD) hired the YALE Dean after he
admittedrecruited the Taliban!!‘distinguished’? What distinquishes him from the other professors at UIC? He used nails in his bombs? His doctorate isn’t real?
Wouldn’t it be terrific if parents would start paying attention to these matters and pulling their kids out of liberal bastions in favor of the few conservative universities out there?
The only way to stop these kinds of outrages is for university alumni and their associations to withhold their donations when fundraising solicitations come around, and give the reason for not donating. Everything boils down to money now-a-days, so hitting them in the pocketbook will get their attention.
Conservatuve students can’t do very much, because they’re caught between needing a grade and liberal professors. And there are too few conservative professors to make even a shallow dent in faculty associations.
I’ll bet the university will issue some pablum about “free speech” and “exchange of ideas in the university” and Ayers will stay on the program.

There are plenty of people who are upset over Ayers invitation, and with good reason. I have yet to hear about who actually invited this jackass. I think the public needs to know who idolizes Ayers and who at the UNL teaches this nonsense. Then throw these clowns out.

What? Demonstrate the properties of Ammonium Nitrate in social justice? My Dad always wanted me to become a history professor. I always told him “no”. They’d fire me in a week. Practically every congressman/woman pals around with someone never brought to justice for what happend in Chappaquiddick, July 19, 1969. That includes McCain. Not trying to make a moral equivalence. Just an observation. Ayers represents a real danger. Not that Teddy isn’t (or wasn’t) dangerous.

Specific points
When Obama went to Columbia he live 1/4 mile from Ayres.
When Obama went to Columbia Ayers was attending Banks Steet College 4 blocks away which had association links to Columbia.
When Ayers finished at Banks he attended Columbia.
When Obama finished Columbia he worked at a Business intelligence firm and NY Public Interest Group.
The were both in NYC for about 4 years in the same time frame and Ayers had hidden underground in NYC prior to surfacing.
While Obama was in NYC the Brinks robbery in Nyack NY occurred with prior Weathermen as part of the participants.
Review of the news coverage from that time frame shows that Ayers name in relation to the Weathermen was almost constant in the news and for Obama to claim he had no idea of his past history would have required him to be living under a rock somewhere.
When Obama attended Occidental he was a member of an SDS affiliated group before transfer.
At the time that Obama was attending Columbia there was an ongoing oral history project interviewing the SDS/Weathermen/Black Panther participants.
Most can not recall Obama as a classmate when people check. If he were involved with this oral history project in search of his Black identity the likely hood of any of the participants exposing his involvement is low.
I submit that Obama/Ayers met in NYC in the time he was there and not in Chicago as the storyline goes.
I would surmise they likely crossed paths at the fringe group places Obama talked about seeking in his books and perhaps also at events at the Cooper Union.
Ayers was at Banks Street College soon after his resurfacing under the strength of his fathers financial support to that college.
The linkages between Ayers’ father as a power broker in Chicago to have Dohrn placed in law firms linked to his term at Con Edison and the ability to slide his son back into political society shows his clout in the community.
Chicago is a tight mesh of a few families controlling all levers of power and I suggest Ayers groomed Obama after Davis did the starting work and recommended the support of his father to enable the start of Obamas legend with placing him on boards in charge of vast sums for a person who was basically an unknown quantity would be questionable at best.
No I believe Ayers and Obama go back to NYC and if any readers here are from Columbia / Banks from that era or have friends ask if they can confirm or deny or give hints to see where to go.
Four years that close together and of fellow political colors would make it highly probable they met then and not as told on the time line now.
Any solid proof of NYC linkage would be a bomb shell with the story that has been built to this point.

I think you are exactly right. I believe Ayers (who has multiple pictures of Malcolm X on his office door) saw in Barry the “perfect” candidate to finally “bring the revolution home”.
I believe Ayers ghost wrote Obama’s books.
I belive Ayers is on sabbatical right now in order to help Obama’s campaign. (He’s probably a speach writer).
I have serious questions about Ayers and 9/11.
…but the media thinks it is more important to investigate Joe the Plumber.

Well, he wrote Obama’s first book, so he may as well write his speeches too.
Marxist academia just keeps trying and they’re more difficult to get rid of than a ground fungus. I finished graduate school at the University of Nebraska in 1972. At that time the young hippie class and their faculty mentors were spreading radicalism on campus. Now, it’s the young Marxists and the faculty mentors. Some things never change but the radical fringe did not represent the general population in 1972 and they don’t now.
Actually Ayers and brother John inherited the political power structure of their father when he passed. His reach was into many of the same areas Ayers talks about and the change he wants to do to the country.
The situation looks like the power duo behind Obama consists of Bill Ayers (whom I say has been assisting in his path since NYC days) and Penny Pritzker his finance person on his campaign which has all those questionable contributions.
Pritzker is of the Hyatt family and there are 12 grand children whom comprise about the 12th richest family in America. Over the years she has donated 500,000 dollars via the FEC to dem causes mostly.
Between all the family the Pritzkers have a hammer lock on Chicago and all the top tier board memberships and interlocks to cover everything in site.
Even Daley kisses the rings on their hand. Bill Ayers basically owns the ward where he and Obama lived.
Now why would such a rich an power lady be working as campaign staff for Obama unless she were not wanting to keep close watch and organize major fund raisers for him.
After Obamas loss to Bobby Rush for the House of Representatives his finance manager (who happened to work for the Pritzker real estate arm) set up the meeting with Ms Pritzker to rebuild his funding sources for his State Senate run.
Another key player here is Valerie Jarrett who is tied into the close knit power circle that is Chicago.
Pritzker is on the board of the group that took over the functions of CAC after it folded when given that task by Daley.
Pritzker was also the person who ran Superior Bank which was built from the wreckage of the S&L bailout mess and in the early 90s invented the concept of sub prime loans and the whole idea of Mortgage Backed Securities.
That bank failed big time but it was the proving grounds for what they wanted to accomplish.
