Saturday Night Live: open thread; Sarah Palin’s a good sport
Sarah Palin is reportedly in NY for a spot on Saturday Night Live tonight.
Supporters gathered outside NBC studios in advance of her guest appearance.
Here’s your open thread for anyone planning to tune in for the show.
Meantime, NBC is slashing its budget:
A trade paper reports that NBC Universal plans to cut $500 million in spending next year to prepare for an expected continuation of the worldwide economic slowdown.
Variety says President and CEO Jeff Zucker announced the cuts Friday in a staff memo. The reduction would equal 3 percent of the company’s budget.
Variety says division heads will decide how to reduce their spending. But Zucker’s memo suggested several ways, including staffing reductions and cutbacks in budgets for travel, entertainment and promotions.
Feel free to offer budget-cutting proposals for NBC/MSNBC.

Hmmm:
“Political blogs are buzzing about Sarah Palin appearing on “Saturday Night Live” tonight. It looks like Gov. Palin might have a difficult time in front of the live audience and hot lights — and she has yet to see a script!
Palin spoke with talk show host Neal Boortz Friday morning on his syndicated radio program. She told Boortz she had not seen a copy of the show’s script, “They haven’t even hinted about what that script is going to say.” Will Palin be improvising? The Alaska governor isn’t worried. She said appearing on “SNL” would give her the chance to “rise above the political shots that we take.”

Update: 12:01am Eastern…
Won’t give it away for those of you on the West Coast, but here’s commenter Ronnie’s reaction at HA:
“Nothing will come of this except Sarah Palin will be perceived as a good sport.”
And two more general reactions:
“Meh” and “huh?”

Say, sitting here reading about the sketches is as funny as watching the show, and withiout those annoying commercials. Thanks for taking the bullet and actually watching SNL so I don’t have too!
PS If you want something funny to watch, try McCain’s speech in NYC or
for silliness This or This.
Good Night!
I don’t know, it’s just hard for me to see humor in anything right now when our country is in such turmoil.
We have some serious issues that are going to have to be resolved in the near future.
Our country is beginning to split apart and so many people just blindly go about their day like everything is fine. Then again maybe it’s just me, I’m getting old and tired.
Couldn’t agree more. And Palin was clearly enjoying herself during it.
I almost thought that Palin should have done it, but then I heard the lyrics.
I especially loved Palin’s “Raise the Roof” dance. She’s got skillz.
This Idiot Brolin is also a wife beater and a bar brawler…not a terribly classy guy to begin with, I dont expect much (but chomping at the bit to see Sarah)!!!
airbrush101 ,
don’t let the S.O.B.’s steal your joy.
Satirize the self-serving ones,
lampoon the buffoonery,
poke pins in the pompousity,
and you will maintain your perspective and sanity.
Yes, things are serious, but where there is life, there is hope.
I get downhearted sometimes, too.
Laughter helps.
Holy frickin’ DUDE.
Almost TWO MILLION BUCKS?!? Same office space as Ayers and Klonsky? Rezko de facto gifts???
Are there any journalists out there anywhere? AT ALL???
Furthermore,airbrush101, check out The Peoples Cube, a parody web site started and run by a former Soviet propagandist who has looked at totalitarianism from both sides.
The State, fascists and socialists are humorless. Laughter is a great weapon against them.
Yeah Terry_Jim, Thanks for the nudge…I didn’t mean to sound so depressing.
I need to make a trip and visit a rally or something, like the “Our Country Deserves Better” bus tour.
Sarah Palin appeared a third time, at the very end where everyone is on stage together.
How about we sue SNL for false advertising. They said she was going to be on tonight…
I did learn one thing. SNL is really not funny. You have to work hard to not inadvertently create a laugh in an hour and a half.
Agreed. That had to be the most boring 1½ hours of TV that I have ever sat through. Sarah was an afterthought and the media will probably be gushing with claims that she just couldn’t hang.
Not in Chicago, silly.
Sheesh, Josh Brolin is the epitome of the “Big Giant Head” from 3rd Rock From The Sun. His head is actually three times the size of what his torso should be supporting. This may be due to far much time spent with Blahbra for it is quite obvious she suffers from highly contagious and acute “IluvmahsefsomuchithurtsGoood”.
What’s also funny is how Alec Baldwin was sooo afraid of Sarahcuda that he could not even look her in the eye. What a
manwimp he is with all that “manly” crap he’s spewed towards her–and–how he was gone from the USA if Bush was re-elected. Why ya still heredudedude-ette?I Tivo’d the show and watching the ending over and over, it’s apparent that Sarah is looking to her right catching that Tina Fey is walking towards her, and Tina is looking at Sarah, and it’s obvious that once the curtain is down, the two of them are going to talk. Would be interesting to know what the two of them say to each other.

I am so old I remember when SNL was funny.
Suggestions for NBC? Sure! Go out of business!
Those extreme close-ups show that she is even prettier than I thought. And she was goood. Very kool! Everyone is right about the rest of the show. First time I have seen it in ages and it was bad. Sarah was the highlight.
That’s an hour-and-a-half of my life that I totally wasted! Nothing funny at all. Palin only spoke about five words.
The rap session was slightly clever but all Palin did was sway to the music.
The rest of the show was Dumb! Dumb! Dumb! (The show, not Palin) How people can call any of this funny is beyond me.
She did hold her own against an entire writing staff and highly payed professional comedians, all of whom wanted to do her in. I thought she came off well. Meanwhile it looks like Ayers mentioned Obama in his book and Obama had a review statement. Wonder if this will be noted on MSM this Sunday morning?
She did hold her own against an entire unprofessional writing staff and
highlyover-paidpayedprofessionalwant-to-be comedians,fixed it for ya.
Saturday Night Live hasn’t been funny in over 30 years. Most of the “funny” cast has now retired or died.
A few suggestions on how Zucker could save a TON of mis-spent money: Fire Olbermann, Matthews, Olbermann’s lesbian shadow Rachel Maddow, and close down MSNBC. That’s a good start. Then close down NBC too. That’s even better. Then maybe Zucker could fire himself, and make the perfect trifecta.
I used to watch MSNBC once in a while. But you hit it on the head, those three just killed it. I don’t watch the channel anymore, it doesn’t even pretend to be a news channel.
I haven’t watched SNL for years and I don’t know if it was a good idea for Palin to appear but, I laughed my head of when the moose got shot.
Governor Palin demonstrated real class and character. It was a great contrast to Fey’s unctuous liberal shtick. It seemed like the crowd also though Palin as much hotter in person too!
Personally, I would have loved to see the real Sarah put the fake Sarah (Fey) in a head-lock and pull her wig off!
I don’t watch SNL. I didn’t know it’s fashionable to insult conservatives, make fun of people’s age and leave their own (liberals) untouched.
Sarah Palin agreeing to appear on SNL = “You people don’t scare me one bit!”
Is there any doubt that NBC was really hoping that she’d decline the appearance? When she accepted it left SNL scrambling in fear of her as witnessed by the fact that they gave her almost no space at all in the skits. They treated her like a cameo appearance; the shame is on them. Even the live audience seemed to want more of Sarah Palin but NBC/SNL will never change their feathers and stop kowtowing to liberals.
SNL used to be a parody show as much as anything else. Now it is just a parody of itself. What would have been good is Sarah Palin playing the part of Tina Fey’s character on 30 Rock, Liz Lemon, coming up with more outrageous “stories” about Sarah Palin. Too bad the writers wouldn’t have the guts to parody Fey’s own show and their own incompetent journalism.
Okay – this has been bugging me for years – years.
I think it is ironic that SNL is considered a liberal show.
Let me try to make my point.
I’ve always felt that it is one of the most subtely rascist shows that has ever been on the air.
Look at all the characters that the african american actors have played over the years. It seems that a great portion of the time, they play marginalized people. Except for rarer occaisions with Eddie Murphy or Chris Rock, the characters they play are never leaders, or people capable of leading.
But that doesn’t make sense to me. This is a fictional show – the writers chose write the characters as they are imagined, and the producers chose to have the actors portay the parts as they see them.
I’m not talking about sketches that are deliberately attacking racism or such, but just those that are about some other subject.
Compare the characters that the african american actors portray to the rest of the cast.
Am I crazy?
Then compare the depictions on SNL to those on Living Color or Mad TV.
Anyway, take a look at this sometime.
By the way Sarah did just fine, considering she was in the Lions den.
Hmmm, she may have surprised a few of the youngish set (or whoever watches SNL anymore. Sarah looked good, but I am a commited Sarah Palin fan.
Guess the humor in all those skits is just too sophisticated for me!
My apologies. I lol’d.
OK, the Moose was funny and the Todd guy was off the hook. The rest of it….. not so much. Sarah was great though.
Who knows what approvals/revisions she and her handlers denied for the script but the decision to put her on the same show as Josh Brolin pi$$ed me off.
Are you kidding me? They put Alec Baldwin and Oliver Stone on with her? Having watched SNL for all these years (although not in the years they really really sucked) the prep work that was done by Fey and Baldwin was pathetic.
Baldwin didnt even try to not read his queue cards and Fey…… well lets just say I’m rethinking my need to ever watch any of her comedy ever again. Im going to miss her, but then I have gotten over the Dixie Chicks and ever using Exxon products too.
The Squirrel has spoken.
Unless things have changed over the past few years, based on having watched a “documentary” or “interviews” several years years ago, I believe the actors choose/select their own the characters and have complete ownership of what they present on the show.
So, if the show is closet racist, then its the actor themself presenting their own inherent personality.
Don’t ruin 3rd Rock for me, Will Shatner’s performance as the Big Giant Head was classic. When he gets escorted off the plane drunk and said there was something on the wing and John Lithgow says the same thing happened to me still makes me laugh even when I just think about it.
“NBC Universal plans to cut $500 million in spending next year to prepare for an expected continuation of the worldwide economic slowdown”
Gee, the cut couldn’t be because they have lost so much of their audience that advertisers have reduced their prices….no, couldn’t be that.
What a class act- Why can’t the country see Governor Palin for a great leader. I pray that she and McCain win. If not, the Governor in 2012
Gutsy, classy, self assured, unintimidated, humorous.
Those are characteristics we need in national leadership.
She did great. As I’ve always said, she’s a new kind of conservative and a fearless one at that.
Good skits.
Glad I didn’t have to watch the entire show for them.
If there was humour in there, it must’ve been too sophisticated for me as well.
I missed it completely.
Libs are neo-racists. They think it matters what color you are – and that color should dictate your thoughts, values and opportunities in life.
In a bigger sense they are neo-bigots. They discriminate on the basis of your religion and gender too.
Republicans freed the slaves, now can we free the victims of racial, gender and religious persecution?
“All the mavericks in the house, put your hands up”
Ha! I thought the Weekend Update bit was awesome!
“I got a bookish look and you alls ‘Hot for Teacher – Todd looking hot on his snow machine’
“All the mavericks in the house, put your hands up – All the plumbers in the house pull your pants up!”
“.. shoot a mother humping moose eight days of da week”
1. SNL has not been funny for a few decades now.
2. I doubt SNL would not give Palin a bigger role… the question remains if SNL came up with skits with more participation for Palin that she would not agree to or did she not cut it in practice?
3. @125 I agree that MSNBC is must turn-off TV but no need for the personal attack on Rachel
Feel free to offer budget-cutting proposals for NBC/MSNBC.
Don’t forget CNBC. Fire all the financial wizards who pimped for the bailout bill.
Does anyone play McCain and Obama on that show any longer?
Let’s just fire all of them and make it Sarah Night Live! Sure would help the ratings for National Barack Channel.

Rachel Maddow is openly gay, so I don’t see how that is a personal attack.
Based on the two excerpts above–thanks, Michelle!–Gov. Palin did fine. She is indeed a good sport, and the rap was obviously planned/written to be delivered that way. (And it was kind funny, too.) SNL actually seemed to be a bit respectful, as they bothered to be somewhat clever in their material with her.)
Alec Baldwin is such a douche and Sarah had to lower her standards to be seen with him. All I can think of is the recording of him talking to his very own daughter and putting her down. I feel so sorry for his child. I think baldwin’s father got verrrrry drunk one time and made love to a potted plant because alec is such a blooming idiot. By the way as far as I know he is still a resident of the USA. As far as Sarah goes she was great (as usual). With what she was handed she dealt with it as good as she could have possibly done. It’s an ugly thought to think of bho as our next pres. I know he won’t win the election fair and square but I know he will be the next POTUS and I hate that thought. America knows enough to tar and feather him but this will never happen because of the elite’s agenda, they need a puppet like bho. It’s amazing that SNL was respectful of Sarah as they were but they look at her like she has already lost so they have nothing to lose. BTW I couldn’t bring myself to watch SNL last night so I watched it on http://www.hulu.com today. OOOOh God, please bless America even though she has fallen so far away from You.
SNL hasn’t been funny since we lost Gilda.
For the most part, I’ve found conservatives quite ready to make fun of themselves. We seem to have the self-esteem it takes to enjoy life and a good laugh.
On the other hand, if one points a joke at a liberal, the pillories are full of necks and wrists.
I Ain’t uh-Biden nObama!
According to FoxNews.com, last night’s SNL with Sarah Palin was SNL’s best rated show in 14 years. She is popular.
Sarah is a good sport.
But Terry Tate is not.
I am never watching American Professional Football again.
My God.
If you read Peggy Noonan’s latest hit piece on Gov. Palin, you will notice EVERY COMMENT about it is NEGATIVE. No-one wants to read the elitist’s elitist talk down to our Sarah.
I liked the line about about Stephen being her favorite Baldwin brother. That was a nice tip of the hat to the conservative base and evangelicals in particular.
After the totally rude Fey piece, and Alec Baldwin being unable to even LOOK in Sarah’s direction and referring to her repeatedly as “that awful woman”,
I’m impressed that she stuck around to get to the Weekend Update segment.
She is a real class act.
She’s so far above that cast in terms of her stature and style that it’s amazing to me that they would be brave enough to share a stage with her.
And I don’t even have a girl-crush on her!
Go Sarah.
I must be showing my age. I have no idea who he is….. (but he’s on my list now, and even if he would have done that same thing with Barak.)
I think she proved just how much of a better person she was than her detractors by that appearance.
I also do not think that she was ever supposed to do that rap. I think it was meant to look like she was and cut it at the last minute, but it was designed that way on purpose.
The sad thing is, that she is really the person that so many people think Capt. Big Ears is. He fakes it and has absolutely no sense of humor and completely lacks the ability to laugh at himself.
She is just classic cool in every sense of the word, and I am really praying she ends up behind the Big Desk running the show as soon as possible. I find her to be one of the smartest, classiest, well spoken, and truly genuine persons to ever enter into National Politics in the history of this country, and only the hatefilled, racist, sexist, filthy smut-mongering Liberals that have infiltrated this country the way cockroaches infiltrate a New York tennament could find her to be anything else but.
The more I see of her and hear from her the more and more I truly like and admire her.
Still trying to talk my daughters into moving to Alaska to find a woman like her of my own.
Retfireman, that is so funny about the ‘moving to Alaska’..my husband and I were talking about that very same thing Saturday night. The kids were in the room and had the look of fear on their faces, so we had to stop talking about a move and start talking about saving for a family Alaskan cruise…who knows, maybe we’ll combine a little vacation time with house hunting time. (of course, this won’t happen any time soon..it’s rather expensive to take a family of 6 on an Alaskan cruise..maybe the feds will surprise me with a bailout and we can go sooner..
)
@151
I don’t know what her personal life has to do with his comment?
Only saw the clips, but I have to concur: The best part was the VERY pregnant Amy Pohler rapping her heart out and dancing while Eskimos and a Todd lood-alike were backing her up.
Alec was pretty sad; barely even looked at her. That was the problem; you get the feeling he was not exaggerating or joking when he called her “awful”. But the line about Stephen being her favorite of the Baldwin Brothers . . .
ba-dump-bump-CHING!
Even if they are secondary characters in someone else’s skit?
I do recall what to speak of – but then – why is it? Again, compared to the two sketch comedy shows it has competed with, why are they different.
Either way, it strikes me as strange, no matter what.
I wouldn’t read too much into that sap Baldwin not looking at Sarah Palin. They were reading from teleprompters and he had to get his next line. However, the Stephen Baldwin joke WAS a good one!
“All the mavericks in the house, put your hands up.”
“All the plumbers in the house, pull your pants up.”
Saracuda rocks.
Sarah’s got more rhythm than Obama. Go, girl!
Obama. Ayers! Obama. Ayers!
Papabryant, you’ve got a point about the teleprompter. It may have been hard for Baldwin to look at her and read his lines at the same time.
It was a nice little “dig” at him to mention Stephen, who he probably considers the “black sheep” of his family (only conservative Christian).
Hey, maybe Stephen can register more than once and get away with voting multiple times to cancel out his bro’s votes!
Sarc/
And let me just add:
“OOOHHH, Saracuda!”
Palin was a good sport, and face it, because of her, SNL got the highest ratings its had in years.
Not only that, the SNL rap, while intending to mock Palin, actually helped remind people of
Obama. Ayers! Obama. Ayers!
Ayers’ plans for America are insane.
The left has been saying for years that “Bush=Hitler”, but when you point out that Ayers appears to be a modern day Hitler wanna-be and Obama passes all the items on the Fascist Dictator Checklist, they want to silence you and/or stick their head in the sand.
