The Colin Powell endorsement: Triumph of hope over reality
Gravitas.
The media’s in a tizzy over Colin Powell’s Meet the Press endorsement of Barack Obama this morning.
It’s not a surprise to anyone who’s paid attention to his pro-Obama murmurings over the last four months.
How will people outside the Beltway bubble respond?
Yawn.
Here’s the vid:
Powell’s embrace of Barack Obama is a triumph of hope over reality. He told Tom Brokaw that Obama’s “steadiness” and “not jumping in and changing every day” convinced him that The One was ready to lead.
Hello?
Guess Powell relied on Obama’s website after he purged his surge criticism from it.
Powell then goes on to pooh-pooh Obama’s longtime “limited relationship” with Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers as an “issue that is not central” to the campaign — just as evidence of the closeness of these two very chummy “neighbors” mounts.
Judgment, schmudgment, eh, Secretary Powell?
Finally, we arrive at the real reason Powell is endorsing Obama: The party, he complains, has become too “narrow” for his tastes. Pro-abortion Powell can’t stand the thought of two more Republican Supreme Court appointments. He thinks Sarah Palin is too conservative. He shares the Obama view of our base as racist and non-inclusive — but has nothing to say about the rabid pack of America-damning preachers who helped make Obama the “transformational” figure Powell has placed his faith in.
Powell also makes reference to all the Obama-is-a-Muslim rumors, blaming the Republican Party for all that. Never mind the Democrat Hillary backers like Bob Kerrey and on down to her grass-roots supporters who indulged themselves and trafficked in those very rumors Powell smears conservatives for spreading.
The orgy of Obamedia attention Powell will receive the next 24 hours is disproportionate to its importance.
The press only loves maverick Republicans when they jump in bed with Democrats.
Just ask John McCain.

One last note: I see in comments that many believe Powell supports Obama because he is black. Powell has said electing a black president would be “electrifying.” He is a staunch supporter of government racial preferences.
It’s a mistake, though, to attribute Powell’s endorsement primarily to some kind of race loyalty.
It’s Obama’s social liberalism, not his skin color, that attracts Powell most.

I dont know if thats a good argument or not. For the last 200+ years, 99% of the caucasian people have voted for the white candidate.
Having Obama as president makes matters of race worse, not better. The Dems can then drive home the racist motives of the Republicans. As we sink into the socialistic gutter, anyone who tries to stop it will be labeled and expelled from public discourse. They will be silenced more after the election than they are now.I am becoming so alienated from my country of birth. America, I hardly know you.
I would say it was liberalism.
Pardon, but I couldn’t notice that some fool lists chafee, eisenhower and leach as conservatives. They are about as conservative as clinton, reid and pelosi, and EVERYONE, both left and right, knows it. Chafee was a rino, turned independent when he saw elections going the other way, but had voted with the liberals so often it hardly made a difference. For anyone that doesn’t know or doesn’t pay attention (or can’t be bothered to google for a few minutes) it might look like it has substance, but it really doesn’t. On another note, I just got another mass mailer from the chuckfullofrats party disclaiming any connection whatsoever between obummer and ayers…and can you believe, they use sources like the nytimes to bolster their arguments! Methinks the liberals are working on the P.T. Barnum line of thinking (a sucker born every minute) and I couldn’t help but laugh at the remarkably stupid and shallow lies printed on non recycled paper (so much for global warming chicken little weiners.)
Colin Powell is BLACK…how did I miss that? I’ve seen his pictures for years and it never dawned on me.
I’m taking solace in the possibility of another Irish-American president…Barrie O’Bama. Don’t like his politics, but I have to support my “own kind”…

One more thought to leave you all with. We stood against the democrats in the Civil War and won. We engaged in both WW1 and WW2 when democrats wanted to sit on the sidelines. We took a stand in the cold war, when all liberals wanted to emulate the communist way of life. We took back the White House after four years of carter, then took back the house after 45 years of democrat mismanagement. Too often we take the high road, and leave the nations enemies to grow strong and fritter away our national pride, wealth and courage, but in the end, we always take the right stand and bring us back where we belong. Should obummer win, that may be the incentive for all people to set their personal interests aside and work for the common good of the nation. I plan to vote for Palin next month, but come what may, I intend to work that much harder for the coming day when true conservative thinking leads this nation back to the best ideals of our founding fathers. A group of special interests is only an alliance of convenient bedfellows, at their core is an immense hatred of America and all it stands for, and sooner or later, the people cannot fail to notice it. Powell can go join the terrorist enabler in chief for all I care, because whichever side has him loses in the end.
Time to watch out for your own and the Hell with the rest. When some Polly Anna -such as Pelosi-talks about “the American People” they are a generation too late.
If 9/11 could not unite us no Chicago street hustler Daly cog can and even General Powell can’t make it happen. Is the General looking for “Hope” or payback and willing to let the country sink? I think so–race above all General? Next perhaps General Powell will agree with John Kerry and admit to being a war criminal for his service in Viet Nam.

And since McCain is more liberal than Bush, I must differ with Michelle. I believe race is the predominant reason for the Powell endorsement.
I couldn’t help but think of two people/groups while watching the documentary “In the Face of Evil”: Barack Obama and Islamofascists, both for different reasons, yet similar in some ways. The following is what caught my attention:

Sounds like he is another one of those who feels anything negative to Obama is not “central to the issues”. So far, I haven’t heard anything, “central to the issues” from Obama, except what the congress (Pelosi and Reid) controls, and not what is central to the Presidency…foreign affairs.

What I see happening in the polls is the base is more energized than even Hillary could have caused. Independents are not flocking to Obambi in the numbers they expected.

I’m a business owner and if Obama gets elected, he will get less than I pay currently. I will see to that. I will deduct every penny, defer income, fast track depreciation, utilize loopholes, donate to my preferred charities. And I will probably lay people off.
Why let Obama take my money waste 70% of it to govt waste and overhead so that 30% of it benefits a slacker?

The media helped McCain over his Republican competitors (beginning to call him the “presumptive nominee a mere three weeks after he came in 4th place in Iowa), and Obama over Hillary, and now they’re pulling for Obama over McCain.

For some reason, maybe because liberals are wicked witches of the east (who knows anymore) they don’t get out and vote on rainy days. I’d suggest, regardless how this election turns out, that we start NOW for the battle of 2010, taking back the house and the senate, pushing real tax reform, real conservative spending, and oversight of conservative judicial nominations. The person in the White House is important, but I’ll always rank it second to the house where money is spent, and the senate where the judiciary is appointed.

Just the other day, there was an alleged poll saying Obama was 14 points ahead.

Have to disagree with you Michelle. If Obama were a white liberal I dont think you would have seen this. It may not have been the main reason that (newbie RINO) Powell made this endorsement, but I believe it is a big part of it.
Its funny becuase he was a house nigger for such a long time according to his race. maybe he’s trying to fit in now. He is a RINO, and I am not suprised to here this news. Plus ws he any good at what he did? History be the judge.
I’ve got no bones to pick with Powell – he’s a politician to be have obtained the success he has had – at the levels he traveled in the military – it certainly requires a politicians skillset.
And, I have not problem with him supporting Obama – good for him – whatever his reasons.
As far as the value of his endorsement – I think there is some value to it, for moderates, perhaps.
You can’t completely discount it.
As far as his criticism of McCain – you’d have to look at their track record – that could be something quite personal – I’m sure their paths have crossed many times in the last 8 years.
The ONLY reason Powell is voting for Obama is color… period. The fact that Obama is going to follow anti-white, liberation theology is just icing on the cake.
Most blacks hate whites… it is axiomatic, and the liberals are opening up the chicken coop and maybe the prisons and definately my wallet.

I haven’t had a chance to read all the comments so someone may have brought this up already, but I think Powell did this for 2 reasons: #1 its about race and #2 he has always been regarded as a “white” african-american just like Condi Rice. This is his chance to break out of that and be more “black”. I think the same thing with Oprah as well. Its really too bad that these people have been so successful in this country and still hold so much to race themselves instead of judging on character.

As a retired Soldier I once had great respect for Powell…this era is finished. How can a former 4 star General support racial preferences?

I’m not sure what Obama thinks this will get him. He already has all the black vote and Powell has no impact on the rest of the military or white America. If anything most whites will develop a tainted impression of him for supporting a Marxist radical.

For a man to give nearly a half-century to his country in uniform and as its highest ranking diplomat to be impugned for his judgment on racial grounds is truly depressing. The man deserves much, much better.

I’ve heard the “let the libs trash the country, so people will see how bad they really are” argument before.
The problem with that, is:
1: a worsening economy could very easily drive more people into the socialists’ waiting arms
2: even if we do get it back eventually, we would have a trashed economy and very little to work with.
3: the libs would start every socialist program they could if given unfettered access. Once started, socialist programs never go away or shrink, they only grow.
4: there is a real posibility that the UN would be called in to “fix” the problem the left caused, resulting in a loss of our sovereignty. I can NOT abide that possibility, no matter the potential gain.
