The Colin Powell endorsement: Triumph of hope over reality

Gravitas.
The media’s in a tizzy over Colin Powell’s Meet the Press endorsement of Barack Obama this morning.
It’s not a surprise to anyone who’s paid attention to his pro-Obama murmurings over the last four months.
How will people outside the Beltway bubble respond?
Yawn.
Here’s the vid:
Powell’s embrace of Barack Obama is a triumph of hope over reality. He told Tom Brokaw that Obama’s “steadiness” and “not jumping in and changing every day” convinced him that The One was ready to lead.
Hello?
Guess Powell relied on Obama’s website after he purged his surge criticism from it.
Powell then goes on to pooh-pooh Obama’s longtime “limited relationship” with Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers as an “issue that is not central” to the campaign — just as evidence of the closeness of these two very chummy “neighbors” mounts.
Judgment, schmudgment, eh, Secretary Powell?
Finally, we arrive at the real reason Powell is endorsing Obama: The party, he complains, has become too “narrow” for his tastes. Pro-abortion Powell can’t stand the thought of two more Republican Supreme Court appointments. He thinks Sarah Palin is too conservative. He shares the Obama view of our base as racist and non-inclusive — but has nothing to say about the rabid pack of America-damning preachers who helped make Obama the “transformational” figure Powell has placed his faith in.
Powell also makes reference to all the Obama-is-a-Muslim rumors, blaming the Republican Party for all that. Never mind the Democrat Hillary backers like Bob Kerrey and on down to her grass-roots supporters who indulged themselves and trafficked in those very rumors Powell smears conservatives for spreading.
The orgy of Obamedia attention Powell will receive the next 24 hours is disproportionate to its importance.
The press only loves maverick Republicans when they jump in bed with Democrats.
Just ask John McCain.
***
One last note: I see in comments that many believe Powell supports Obama because he is black. Powell has said electing a black president would be “electrifying.” He is a staunch supporter of government racial preferences.
It’s a mistake, though, to attribute Powell’s endorsement primarily to some kind of race loyalty.
It’s Obama’s social liberalism, not his skin color, that attracts Powell most.

If indeed he cheated Hillary out of the nomination, why is he still breathing?
If Obama is elected and implements socialized medicine, you won’t be able to get a doctor’s appointment even if you are having a heart attack.

Great choice.
You forgot New Orleans, LA
Is this endorsement a surprise to anyone? Colin Powell was the first affirmative action poser child for every office he ever held. He is certainly in favor of the first affirmative action president.

No, not really, but doing anything else only encourages them to do more of the same. I believe the only way the left will learn is the hard way, and the sooner that happens, the better.
The MSM is working overtime trying to use the polls to demoralize. DJ Drummond over at Wizbang has done a real good job of taking them apart and explaining the internals. He has them archived over there. Worth the while to go look.
Don’t stay home. 2006 was a mistake on our part to relinquish control to the left.
You can’t throw him under the bus because:
*He got off the bus long ago
*Only BHO can use this tactic without fear of repercussion

It’s not just the left that is going to get taught a lesson in what is coming over the next 4 years (at least). Some of the things this monster intends to do wont be so easily reversed… If we can reverse them at all. I think he is going to fundamentally alter the character of the country and not for the better. In short, this will be catastrophic.
Sec. Powell was just mouthing the loyalty oath to get a job or a ‘blue ribbon commission’ from Obama.
He’ll still have to get in back of the bus behind Madiline Albright.
I agree Bill, and have been warning people all over, but the libs just refuse to listen, and if I push it, they just get more defensive. I ask them to refute even one of my arguments and they get really angry because they can’t. That’s when they start getting nasty and call me a racist (in the extreme cases).
It’s a cult.
Nice to actually be agreeing with you on things for a change Bill.
I agree….yawn! But, the MSM is going to make a big deal out of it, like Powell is some sort of big-time political machine that will swing undecided voters based on his endorsement. Sounds like he is another one of those who feels anything negative to Obama is not “central to the issues”. So far, I haven’t heard anything, “central to the issues” from Obama, except what the congress (Pelosi and Reid) controls, and not what is central to the Presidency…foreign affairs.
Where is Jim Jones and Marshall Applewhite when you really need them?
Hillary Voters for McCain thinks Powell endorsed Obama because of his race and I agree.
“Oprah and Colin Powell are both racist in their endorsements, because we doubt they’d back a white man or woman who had no accomplishments to his or her name the way Obama does. Just as Oprah always billed herself as being all about female empowerment before chucking that aside to back a black male candidate, Powell has never once had anything in common with a Democrat, and yet here he is backing a black male candidate.”
“Let’s breakdown Powell’s endorsement for a minute. If he claims he’s not backing Obama just because he’s black, that means Powell must be backing Obama for another reason. So, we believe it’s then safe to assume that Powell shares the following with Obama:
1. He mocks working class Americans like Joe the Plumber
2. He believes in meeting unconditionally with rogue leaders
3. He feels Midwesterners are bitter and cling to guns and religion
4. He can’t believe the price of arugula at Whole Foods
5. He wants hard working Americans to turn over their income for redistribution
6. He sees no problem flip-flopping on important issues like FISA, campaign finance reform, drilling, or whatever the polls are saying this week
7. He has no qualms about not only associating with hatemongers like Jeremiah Wright or unrepentant terrorists like William Ayers, but also lying about the relationships he has with them, before lying about what he lied about today in an ever-changing circle of lies on the subject
8. He thinks nothing’s wrong with dirty Chicago politics and dealings with people like convicted felon Tony Rezko
9. He doesn’t see the need to put his hand on his heart during the national anthem and show proper respect for American traditions
10. He wouldn’t have visited troops in the hospital in Germany or Iraq either, because no cameras were allowed in there
”
“We do not believe for a moment that Powell would have endorsed a white man or woman who had even one of the above attached to them — and that’s just 10 right off the top of our head. So, this is obviously about race and we believe everyone knows it.”

Bill Grant,
Good thought. Go on strike. Let the people in the wagon get out and push with the rest of us for a change.
Fat chance. Never happen. But a good thought anyway.
Citizen Obama and the rabble seem to think he’s the next Napolean. He will be, too, if the rest of us stand up and refuse his socialistic prescription for what ails us.
Looks grim, tho. The left has done its work well in the media, the schools, and in so patiently and persistently infiltrating our government bureaucracy since the days of Truman.
Alas, I see a perfect storm on the horizon.

Too bad about Powell. I didn’t know he was that much to the left. Were there ANY Conservatives in this Administration?
relax, he really isn’t going to vote for Obama, it’s just the Bradley effect.

Just to provide a perspective on this from foreign media, here in New Zealand, the top of the hour news declared that this endorsement should ensure victory for Obama. This is then followed up with the “latest polls” which indicate a lead of 10 points and a statement that the only way Obama could lose is if the “Republicans steal the election as they have in the past two presidential election cycles”. So there you have it, foreign media are laying the groundwork for undermining anything that McCain might do on foreign policy should he manage to pull this election off.

The reason I posted that excerpt from the blog is that they have the balls to tell it like it is about Powell.
I disagree with MM on this one.
Just what the hell is going on..
Obama snorted coke, was initially raised a muslim, then spent 20 years attending a racist anti-American church, has domestic terrorists as personal friends, sponsors election fraud, has confirmed he is pro baby-killing, is all for undermining the US military and capitulation to our sworn enemies, and is pro socialism.. and this guy is going to be president???
nyc123me.
What I see happening in the polls is the base is more energized than even Hillary could have caused. Independents are not flocking to Obambi in the numbers they expected.
Don’t stay home.
Affirmative action worked for Powell. So why not a Presidential candidate.
I still don’t think Obama pulls this off. People who haven’t drunk the Kool Aid are really scared of this guy. I’ve heard more talk from who I’ve ID’d as fence sitters since Joe the plumber. The eyes are opening. They are starting to do their own research.
I’m a business owner and if Obama gets elected, he will get less than I pay currently. I will see to that. I will deduct every penny, defer income, fast track depreciation, utilize loopholes, donate to my preferred charities. And I will probably lay people off.
Why let Obama take my money waste 70% of it to govt waste and overhead so that 30% of it benefits a slacker?
I’d rather donate to efficient, preferably conservative, charities.
F*ck Obama and the horse he rode in on. Betcha more of us “rich” people will do the same.
I just hope the douche bag grows a pair and protects our national security.
So it’s not about race is it, the general now wants to endorse cut and run on his own troops?
The very same general who was at the front when the Iraq war started? Who gave the last testimony at the UN SC, before shouting “get Saddam”, metaphorically of course.
It’s all about policy right?
I’m sorry, but the good general lost me on the character issue when he sat silent as Bush was battered in the media with lies, and all along Powell knew it was Armitage who had leaked Plame’s name. It always comes out — Some character. No principles.
No I am sorry, it is all about race, and finally Powell came out of the race closet for all to see.
Boy this election cycle is sure turning them out, it will never be the same, no matter how many times the drive by media exchanges their shorts for dry ones.
Powell, who once sat at the UN and described in detail with graphics the mobile chemical weapons trucks Hussein had, now endorses Hussein who spews chemical hatred for this nation.
Powell, who once served in the military, backs a man who dispises the military.
Powell, who once was a great man, now back a man who believes himself to be a Christ-figure.
What an a**hole you are, Powell. Of course your decision is based soley on race.
Yeah, like that New York Times endorsement…given during the Republican primary to help the most Democrat-friendly Republican win the nomination, then “PSYCH! We’re gonna endorse Obama now”…
The media helped McCain over his Republican competitors (beginning to call him the “presumptive nominee a mere three weeks after he came in 4th place in Iowa), and Obama over Hillary, and now they’re pulling for Obama over McCain.
No worries Marshall, I will not be staying home.
For some reason, maybe because liberals are wicked witches of the east (who knows anymore) they don’t get out and vote on rainy days. I know that doesn’t affect their getting the dead, the illegals, the non-existent out to vote, but the rest of the walking, talking, whining, stab America in the back crowd just won’t leave the house on a rainy day. Here’s hoping we have thundershowers Nov. 4. I’ll put on my U.S. issue raingear, get in my SUV, vote, then go home and have a big steak dinner and throw another log on the fire in the house I built myself. I’ll watch the returns, and I’ll celebrate either way it goes because conservatives will survive no matter what the liberals do. We don’t need starbucks, the nytimes, media pundits telling us what to think, schools telling us what to read, special interests telling us how to vote, and so forth. I’d suggest, regardless how this election turns out, that we start NOW for the battle of 2010, taking back the house and the senate, pushing real tax reform, real conservative spending, and oversight of conservative judicial nominations. The person in the White House is important, but I’ll always rank it second to the house where money is spent, and the senate where the judiciary is appointed.
Isn’t it interesting that the dems have embraced Obama with all his flaws, but think Sarah Palin’s husband is a dirtball because he had a DWI 15 years ago.
Powell- the one who couldn’t get the 4th ID into Iraq through Turkey even after Turkey promised us they could.
Powell– the one who COWERED after the Kurds (IRAQI’S) fought south to Kirkuk and Turkey said make ‘em stop and get them out of there!! (fighting for their own damned country!!!) And Powell folded like a cheap lawn chair!
Don’t let the door hitcha Powell, we don’t need weaklings like you.
Hmmm maybe but race is certainly a factor.
Exactly. What I’ve been saying for weeks now. No one should take a defeatist attitude that it’s over and done with.
The military uses PSYOPS (psychological operations) to manipulate. The MSM and all their minions and the liberals are trying to do the same. Don’t fall for it!
If you see a poll, don’t just take it for face value. Download the backgrounder (if available) and look at how the questions are are, who they’re asking, etc.
Just the other day, there was an alleged poll saying Obama was 14 points ahead.
Yeah, guess what they polled?
38% Democrats
30% Republicans
31% Independents
Fair? Not exactly.
Don’t give up.
Vote McCain and Palin
Have to disagree with you Michelle. If Obama were a white liberal I dont think you would have seen this. It may not have been the main reason that (newbie RINO) Powell made this endorsement, but I believe it is a big part of it.
Its funny becuase he was a house nigger for such a long time according to his race. maybe he’s trying to fit in now. He is a RINO, and I am not suprised to here this news. Plus ws he any good at what he did? History be the judge.
I’ve got no bones to pick with Powell – he’s a politician to be have obtained the success he has had – at the levels he traveled in the military – it certainly requires a politicians skillset.
And, I have not problem with him supporting Obama – good for him – whatever his reasons.
As far as the value of his endorsement – I think there is some value to it, for moderates, perhaps.
You can’t completely discount it.
As far as his criticism of McCain – you’d have to look at their track record – that could be something quite personal – I’m sure their paths have crossed many times in the last 8 years.
The ONLY reason Powell is voting for Obama is color… period. The fact that Obama is going to follow anti-white, liberation theology is just icing on the cake.
Most blacks hate whites… it is axiomatic, and the liberals are opening up the chicken coop and maybe the prisons and definately my wallet.
I’m sure their paths crossed many times in the past 8 years, because in the 60′s and 70′s John was in the Hanoi Hilton being tortured nearly to death, while Colin was in an air conditioned office whitewashing the Mi Lai massacre.
Rush Limbaugh has it covered:
Start prepping now: Jindal/DeMint 2012. Also, we need to put pressure on the RNC to move towards a preferential voting system during the primaries to ensure we don’t get another McCain.
I haven’t had a chance to read all the comments so someone may have brought this up already, but I think Powell did this for 2 reasons: #1 its about race and #2 he has always been regarded as a “white” african-american just like Condi Rice. This is his chance to break out of that and be more “black”. I think the same thing with Oprah as well. Its really too bad that these people have been so successful in this country and still hold so much to race themselves instead of judging on character.
Beg to differ, It’s about race plain and simple. Powell is a racist.
Looks like Powell is acting like a “typical” black man.
I expected nothing more from him.
I served under his command, lost some respect for him awhile back. Now I know I wasn’t wrong.
Hey Been there I’m in the same boat.Hopefully Dino will not get cheated out of the elcetion this time.
Electrifying my arsch!!!
As a retired Soldier I once had great respect for Powell…this era is finished. How can a former 4 star General support racial preferences?
This is the rope that I hope finally hangs the dimocrat party; the sham of racial preference.
I’m not sure what Obama thinks this will get him. He already has all the black vote and Powell has no impact on the rest of the military or white America. If anything most whites will develop a tainted impression of him for supporting a Marxist radical.
Rush Limbaugh hit the nail on the head.
rplatt re:
I’m not sure what Obama thinks this will get him.
I think that it is more about what Powell thinks it will get him, which is probably no more than avoiding disenfranchisement. MHO
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Rob, awww come on tell us how you really feel.
Way to tar and smear a great public servent. Republicans use conservative minorities to no end for their own purposes (as if anyone would have even heard of Michael Steele if he were white) but the minute they endorse a black Democrat, it MUST be because he’s RAAAAAACIST!
For a man to give nearly a half-century to his country in uniform and as its highest ranking diplomat to be impugned for his judgment on racial grounds is truly depressing. The man deserves much, much better.
Um…who is Dino???
I didn’t say squat, I just quoted the “Great Emancipator”…. He had his head on straight…. Me? I just quote history…
I think I have to agree, with Powell it IS race.
I was so hoping it wouldn’t be but deep down I knew he would back Obama.
His excuses for doing so solidified why he did so…. RACE.
As I said earlier today and as many have pointed out here and as Rush has exposed, it can be no other reason.
From LaRaza being alive and well funded still today, to 95% of blacks voting for race ahead of character….No wonder race relations suck in this country.
Add white guilt from those on the left and we’re back in the 60′s…only Ayers can be truly happy.
And Martin Luther Kings breath seems wasted.
I’ve heard the “let the libs trash the country, so people will see how bad they really are” argument before.
The problem with that, is:
1: a worsening economy could very easily drive more people into the socialists’ waiting arms
2: even if we do get it back eventually, we would have a trashed economy and very little to work with.
3: the libs would start every socialist program they could if given unfettered access. Once started, socialist programs never go away or shrink, they only grow.
4: there is a real posibility that the UN would be called in to “fix” the problem the left caused, resulting in a loss of our sovereignty. I can NOT abide that possibility, no matter the potential gain.
Rob, re: Me? I just quote history…
OK, I will buy that… but you know, sometimes history is two words.
Yup, it’s all about racial solidarity. I read the link about Powell’s liking of affirmative action. Wait until ACORN and other community activists come out of the woodwork about this being a referendum on racial quotas. Take heed all you Irishmen who work in the trades in Chicago, Boston, and NYC. Your kids will get no more “legacy” appointments to apprenticeships anymore. The aptitude tests will be dumbed down dramatically so that a more “diverse” workforce will be the goal. Think I’m joking??? Then why is it that after the national and state elections are over where Daley and Rev Jackson are always allies then the municipal election cycle starts and they are at each others throats because of race???
Oh, I totally agree with President Lincoln, I think it would have made things soooo much better in this country…
No Crips, no Bloods, no tagging, no rap, no ghettos, no free lunches, no welfare, no Obama… but what the hell do I know… I just learn from history.
Too bad, most don’t.
I hear ya farmgal. I was stationed in Texas, and had to watch the sorry joke of recounts in Washington. After the second time that Dino had taken it, the Dem Chair got on national TV and said “they would keep counting until it came out right”. I guess after they found all the “lost ballots” in King county, it must have “come out right”
I think Dino must have some sort of record? Won 2 time and lost once, and only ran one time. It has to be a record in there somewhere.
Of course going to an all mail in election will SURELY avoid any fraud here….. yeah…right..
Sarge
Of course he had to support Obama,
cause Richard Armitage is not running…
Rob re: “No Crips, no Bloods, no tagging, no rap, no ghettos, no free lunches, no welfare, no Obama… but what the hell do I know… I just learn from history”.

Oh yeah, that reminds me… “HIStory“… lol.. also no Michael Jackson!

That might stir a few moderates and fence sitters sitters into action. Perhaps the UN might need to bring in some Blue Helmets to protect their fixers. But the short term worry I have is BroBama putting the Blue Helmet on whatever troops WE have left. That is still a reason to Hate Clinton all the more-the Balkans.

Good God! What a dreadful end to a glorious day in the middle of nowhere Idaho. Temperature in the 70s and absolutely no wind spend most of it outside enjoying it while psyching my self up to go back to work tomorrow (my week of leave is up). I can’t believe Collin Powell would endorse the worst possible choice for a future Commander-in-Chief. Like many comments I have read from many other members of the military or those that have either served or retired, I lost a lot of respect for the former Joint Chief of Staff now in league with the empty suit.
Welcome to the United Socialist States of America! We’re boned!

Hey Boomer, It’s just as good here in Coeur d’Alene. Don’t be negative, we have Idaho to be thankful for.

oh shocker!!
he’s black.. of course he’s going to vote for Obama…

I almost hope you are right. My apologizes for copyingan earlier post about Democrat’s use of the military.
Example #1: In 1966 the Air Force presented a target list of 250 prioritized targets to bomb in North Vietnam. They got back the list two years later with the following instructions: “List approved but bomb them in reverse priority order 250 to 1.” Casaulaties in the South mount as supplies from the North are not interdicted by this policy. Source “History Channel.”
Example #2: China enters the Korean War in November 1950. By March 1951 no divisional sized uniits of the Chinese or North Korean Armies are left. The road to the Chinese border is wide open. China asks for talks, Truman agerees and advancing UN forces are ordered to halt a attack that would have ended the war with a unified Korea. The fighting ends with NO PEACE TREATY 2 1/2 years later. Source: “Conflict” by Robert Leecke
Example #3: The US loses 18 dead and 92 wounded in Somalia after US Rangers and Delta Force are sent on a raid deep into the capital city with no tactical air, no attack helicopters, no heavy armor, no Spectre ginships, and no naval gunfire support. All the request fire support had been denied by The Clinton administration. Source: Blackhawk Down by Mark Bowden
Example 4: From 2004 through June 2008 we have countless comments such as “the war is lost” by Harry Reid. An enemy encouraged by these comments continues to fight and kill Aericans becasue they believe they can win a Vietnam type vicotry where we give up. The Democratic Presidential candidate continues to press for withdrawl without victory. Troops deaths 4,161.
I have lots more examples. I also have 58,000 comrades whose names are on a wall thanks to “We can have Guns and Butter” Democrats.
For all you old guys the handle Digshot is a web game or a web gamer or a pretend character. This guy digshot is just a kid, probably playing in mommies basement. He’s needs twenty more years before he’s worth talking to.
#173, PKAmmotroop,
You forgot to include Baltimore, MD – democrat controlled …..
I was under the impression that Digshot was actually Dogsh*t…
You and me Red State, NOW.
Who called Colin Powell a “House Slave” and an “Uncle Tom”? Liberal? Conservative? Let me give you a clue: It wasn’t one us
Who called Condeleezza Rice “Aunt Jemima”? Liberal? Conservative? Let me give you a clue: That person supports Obama, guaranteed fact.
When you said
I would love to hear what you think that means because in reality you couldn’t be further from the truth. But that’s what happens when you simply spout party line talking points with out realizing what you’re saying.
Historically it is the Democrats who have been using and abusing blacks, minorities, and immigrants for CENTURIES. Did someone happen to mention the Civil War to you in your upbringing? Didn’t they bother to mention that the main reason that the Republican party was formed to Free the slaves? Probably not, I’ll also bet that they neglected to inform you that the Democrat party used their strong arm storm troopers, the KKK, to enforce their racist policies and to kill black politicians that began winning elections in the south.
Jim Crowe is NOT a Republican invention, that’s the Democratic party in action. Tammany hall which kept immigrants groveling in abject poverty used only for their votes? Not a Republican machine by any means.
In the 1920′s the Republicans demanded anti lynching laws, but lynching was part of the Democratic party platform.
Who were the main opponents of the Civil Rights Act of 1964? It wasn’t Republicans, in fact only 4 voted against it on libertarian basis. It was your wonderful warm hearted Democrats who decided that blacks were an inferior race, including Robert Byrd.
And who is, right now, running around using blacks like meat puppets, destroying their dignity and making a joke of the entire election process? The NRA? Hardly. But the ACORN doesn’t fall far from the tree.
And HOW DARE YOU even think to criticize me for questioning the stupid decision made by a politician? I don’t give a damn what his skin color is, I supported him for years and to suddenly turn around and kick every thing he’s ever said to have stood for to the curb and embrace an avowed socialist is beyond disgusting.
As far as I can tell the only reasons for this are 1) he’s been lying to us for years about his beliefs, or 2) He’s been bribed with a sweet Ambassadorship by Komrad Obama (I think a combination of 1 & 2 is most likely), or 3) he’s gone senile, or 4) he’s a racist and jumped on the first black bandwagon.
Either way, I will never allow a Democrat with their historic use and abuse of the minority races to call me, or anyone else, a racist.
