The Colin Powell endorsement: Triumph of hope over reality

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 19, 2008 11:27 AM

Gravitas.

The media’s in a tizzy over Colin Powell’s Meet the Press endorsement of Barack Obama this morning.

It’s not a surprise to anyone who’s paid attention to his pro-Obama murmurings over the last four months.

How will people outside the Beltway bubble respond?

Yawn.

Here’s the vid:

Powell’s embrace of Barack Obama is a triumph of hope over reality. He told Tom Brokaw that Obama’s “steadiness” and “not jumping in and changing every day” convinced him that The One was ready to lead.

Hello?

Guess Powell relied on Obama’s website after he purged his surge criticism from it.

Powell then goes on to pooh-pooh Obama’s longtime “limited relationship” with Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers as an “issue that is not central” to the campaign — just as evidence of the closeness of these two very chummy “neighbors” mounts.

Judgment, schmudgment, eh, Secretary Powell?

Finally, we arrive at the real reason Powell is endorsing Obama: The party, he complains, has become too “narrow” for his tastes. Pro-abortion Powell can’t stand the thought of two more Republican Supreme Court appointments. He thinks Sarah Palin is too conservative. He shares the Obama view of our base as racist and non-inclusive — but has nothing to say about the rabid pack of America-damning preachers who helped make Obama the “transformational” figure Powell has placed his faith in.

Powell also makes reference to all the Obama-is-a-Muslim rumors, blaming the Republican Party for all that. Never mind the Democrat Hillary backers like Bob Kerrey and on down to her grass-roots supporters who indulged themselves and trafficked in those very rumors Powell smears conservatives for spreading.

The orgy of Obamedia attention Powell will receive the next 24 hours is disproportionate to its importance.

The press only loves maverick Republicans when they jump in bed with Democrats.

Just ask John McCain.

***

One last note: I see in comments that many believe Powell supports Obama because he is black. Powell has said electing a black president would be “electrifying.” He is a staunch supporter of government racial preferences.

It’s a mistake, though, to attribute Powell’s endorsement primarily to some kind of race loyalty.

It’s Obama’s social liberalism, not his skin color, that attracts Powell most.

I have no proof that Bush lied about WMDs, and I have never, ever called him a liar about it. You’ll never find that quote, because it doesn’t exist. The WMD evidence was bad. The Bush administration even admits that now. There was bad, faulty, fugezi, evidence. I have no proof that Bush lied, so I haven’t accused him of doing so.

From Powell’s speech to the 1996 Republican National Convention:

We Republicans believe that the good jobs needed to sustain families come from a faster-growing economy where the free enterprise system is unleashed to create wealth — wealth which produces more good jobs.

We are the party committed to lessening the burden of taxes, cutting government regulations and reducing government spending, all for the purpose of generating the higher economic growth that will bring better jobs, wages and living standards to all our people.

All of us — all of us, my friends — all of us must be willing to do with less from government if we are to avoid condemning our children and grandchildren with a crushing burden of debt that will deny them the American dream.

I have been asked many times why I became a Republican. I became a Republican because like you, I believe our party best represents the principles of freedom, opportunity, and limited government upon which our nation was founded.

I became a Republican because I believe the policies of our party will lead to greater economic growth which is the only real solution to the problems of poverty that keep too many Americans from sharing in the wealth of this nation.

I became a Republican because I believe, like you that the federal government has become too large and too intrusive in our lives. We can no longer afford solutions to our problems that result in more entitlements, higher taxes to pay for them, more bureaucracy to run them and fewer results to show for it.

I became a Republican because I believe America must remain the leader of the free world. Republican leadership, a Republican president, will bring greater conviction and coherence to our foreign policy — and will guarantee that our Armed Forces remain the strongest and most capable on earth.

But, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with a trillion dollars more spending, increasing the size of government exponentially with regulation and socializing health care, and hamstringing our military.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending MY MONEY than I would. I think when you spread the wealth around it is good for everybody! It’s Patriotic!

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. All profits are evil and should be confiscated for Government Redistribution.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that MORE Government regulations and higher taxes on Business will stop Business from exporting their jobs to Countries with LESS Government regulations and lower taxes.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe terrorists should be allowed to have trials in American courts. And be able to subpoena top secret documents, soldiers, government officials, etc. to cross examine for their defense. They should have ACLU lawyers who can help intimidate Americans who serve on the juries!

I’m voting Democrat because I believe Gay Marriage should be the law of the land and will probably produce better children.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe English should not be the official language of the United States. I don’t mind pushing one for English when I use the phone.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe partial birth abortion is okay but water boarding a terrorist is disgusting.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe having a domestic terrorist like Bill Ayers as a close friend is a good thing. It allows for great relations with foreign terrorists.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe in a FREE government health care system. I believe doctors, nurses, hospitals, drug companies, etc. will gladly donate their time, products, services, facilities, etc. for FREE and that will be a better system.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe in and support trial lawyers, frivolous lawsuits and outrageous jury verdicts.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe 9/11 was an inside job to con the American people to go to war for oil.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe social security is solvent and that there is a social security lock box and I don’t believe social security is a Ponzi scheme.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe MOST AMERICANS are bitter and cling to their guns and religion. Let’s rid our country of guns and religion!

I’m voting Democrat because I believe illegal aliens deserve all the rights of ordinary Americans plus some additional rights Americans do not have.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe corporations should pay higher taxes! I believe higher taxes on business will make the price of their products and services LESS EXPENSIVE.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe groups like ACORN who register felons, drug addicts, wino’s, homeless drifters, illegal aliens, dead people, children, fictional Disney characters, etc. makes my vote count more.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe celebrating the winter solstice shows compassion for the small minority of people that do not celebrate Christmas.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe hard core criminal murders and rapists deserve life and that the innocent unborn deserve death. It’s a choice I can live with.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe Bush caused Hurricane Katrina and he blew-up the levies in the ninth ward of New Orleans.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that any one who is not partaking in one of the many wonderful government programs obviously has too much money and should pay higher taxes.

I’m voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq the terrorists will be happy and now think of us as good people.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe our soldiers are AIR RAIDING villages and killing innocent people.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe sex in the Oval Office with an intern is a private matter and that everybody lies under oath about sex.

I’m voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as it does not offend people. Can’t we all just get along?

I’m voting Democrat because I believe oil companies’ profits are wrong. I believe higher taxes on oil companies will produce lower prices at the pump.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe we need to rid ourselves of dependency on foreign oil, BUT I AM AGAINST offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, drilling in Anwar, building nuclear power plants and clean coal technology.

And finally, I’m voting Democrat because I believe Reverend Wright when he said “GODDAMN AMERICA” and “OUR CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST”. Hey let’s make a comfortable nest for those chickens!

Why so, since my views align a lot more with McCain’s than with Obama’s? And since I truly dread the notion of a Democratic president, Democratic House, and hugely Democratic Senate?

Primarily for two reasons, those of temperament and of judgment.

When the economic crisis broke, I found John McCain bouncing all over the place. In those first few crisis days, he was impetuous, inconsistent, and imprudent; ending up just plain weird. Having worked with Ronald Reagan for seven years, and been with him in his critical three summits with Gorbachev, I’ve concluded that that’s no way a president can act under pressure.

Second is judgment. The most important decision John McCain made in his long campaign was deciding on a running mate.

That decision showed appalling lack of judgment. Not only is Sarah Palin not close to being acceptable in high office—I would not have hired her for even a mid-level post in the arms-control agency. But that selection contradicted McCain’s main two, and best two, themes for his campaign—Country First, and experience counts. Neither can he credibly claim, post-Palin pick.

I sure hope Obama is more open, centrist, sensible—dare I say, Clintonesque—than his liberal record indicates, than his cooperation with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid portends. If not, I will be even more startled by my vote than I am now.

Suffice it to say that on the subject we have been discussing, when Jesus said “I come not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it” (Matt. 5:17), He meant that He would be forever the payment for the people’s sins (past and present). The law required the animal sacrifice for atonement until Jesus’ death on the cross, when He became that Lamb Who takes away the sin of the world. He therefore fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham that “through his seed all nations would be blessed.” (Gen. 12:3) That is how the “Old Covenant” and “New Covenant” intersect. I think we’re on the same page, but I’m sure Flenser would have a problem with all of this.

One of my very best and closest friends served under Powell. The incidents he’d confide were disturbing, to say the least. When the GOP was pushing him as a candidate, I worried; when he dropped out, I felt relief.

Powell is a total political animal. A perfect example of the worst of political officers. Think Eddie Haskle in uniform. I don’t know if he started that way: I never could find anyone who remembered him from his early days. If he was originally a man, instead of a political-wraith, it truly is a shame.

Surprised? Not at all. Powell is a Hollowman, the military equivelent of that shapechanger Obama. He burned the troop below, his friends to either side in his climb to the top. Wrongs done were never his, but always those around him. I believe that this was why, in the end, he didn’t run: as an R, all the baggage would have spilled out. He knows that the people who really *are* colorblind are Rs. It is no accident he’s bailing now — that the Rs have done all they can on his behalf.

I have nothing but contempt for the man. Unlike Eddie Haskle, whose youth was an – albeit poor – excuse, Colin Powell has not even that.

He fulfilled the Law by keeping it perfectly, dying for all sins, and by setting up a New Covenant, a new Law. Part of the Law of Moses itself tells those under the Law to follow the “new Moses” with a “new law” when He comes (Deut. 18:18-19).

Everyone who was saved prior to the cross was saved by the blood of Christ (by the grace of God through faith in God), but after the resurrection and proclamation of the Gospel, only those who enter into the New Covenant (faith in Christ) receive the blood of Christ (Acts 17:30-31).

    Where is the lie?

The lie is that he told McCain that he would take public financing if McCain did.

Well, McCain did but Obama did not. That means he lied to McCain.

To go further, that lie may have created problems for McCain as McCain relied on that fraudulent promise when he planned his campaign, fundraising, etc.

If it was a purposeful lie to bamboozle McCain, it’s even worse. If it’s just an act of stupidity because he did not realize he could raise more money, then that goes to his stupidity.

Either way, it goes to his character. As someone here said, it was smart of him. Only smart if you have no character. We can not rely on Obamas word. He says he will won’t tax 95% of the the people. Do we rely on that or will he “change” his mind because it would be “smart” to tax more people.

Or perhaps the no tax pledge on 95% is a lie to garner votes.

BTW, if Obama is outspending McCain by some huge amount, why are the polls so close?

Because of Obama’s newness(if that’s a word), lack of experience and associations. What the DNC has been able to do is put traditionally red states in play. They have also been able to mobilize registration for new voters. Obama will also be dominating the airwaves in these final two weeks. McCain may be within 5 pts in some of the polls, but that doesn’t mean things will look all that close when electoral votes come in.

On the other hand, due to Obama being so inexperienced, and perhaps a slight, slight “Bradley effect”, I expect Obama to win a fairly close election. The key will be his support amongst hispanics, and 2-4 red states will flip blue. (Colorado, Virginia and New Mexico, and maybe, maybe North Carolina). McCain will win Ohio, and probably Florida. IMHO. I think Obama will win by about 20-30 electoral votes with 3-4 percent of the popular vote. If Obama took the public money, he’d be losing this election, because he wouldn’t be able to compete in the reds, or spread McCain so thin all around. People are predicting a landslide for Obama, but I just don’t see it. However, I’m no expert, and could easily be wrong.

BTW, keep an eye on Georgia on election day. Bob Barr could steal 2-3%, and the black vote will be out in record numbers. So far, early voting has the black turnout at 36% when 25-27% has been the overall norm in the past. I doubt Obama wins GA, but there is an outside shot.

I’m basing these predictions on no new major developments coming up. Biden’s stupid, stupid, “testing” gaffe is the type of thing that can cause movement. This is particularly so, if some type of international crisis comes up in the coming 14 days. We’ll see.

I disagree. Biden makes gaffes, really dumb, stupid gaffes, all of the time. People expect it of him. It isn’t even news when he does it.

I don’t think Biden’s gaffe is going to make any difference. I think Obama’s recent gaffe (when he accidentally told the truth) to Joe the plumber has really hurt him – far more than anything Biden has said.

As it stands at this moment, I now believe McCain will probably beat Obama in a close election. Of course, who knows what major twists still lie in the future. It has been one entertaining election so far!

Even the mainstream media had to report the story, although they spun it and trashed Joe. The issue is out there and people know what’s going on. Second, Biden’s gaffe yesterday. He brought back into the fray, the issue of national security. That is a plus for McCain.
