Help lift up a wounded soldier

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 20, 2008 09:27 PM

Ok, here is my birthday plea:

Please help out PFC Hunter Levine. My friend Debra Burlingame sends word that his friends, family, and fellow soldiers are asking for support.

Read:

I know a young man who is in desperate need of help. His name is PFC Hunter Levine. He is 20 years old and hails from Houston, TX.

He was in my company and was wounded on 9 May, 2008 while conducting combat operations in East Baghdad. He received a very serious injury to his face, resulting in the loss of his entire bone structure, mouth, nose, and vision.

He was evacuated to Walter Reed Hospital where the doctors performed numerous surgeries to repair his face. I was fortunate enough to attend a Purple Heart Ceremony at Walter Reed while I was home on leave in June. I was also able to meet with Hunter’s father Beau.

Hunter was then transferred to a VA hospital in Palo Alto, where the best care for his vision would be available. He is a true fighter with a heart of gold.

Bad News

Unfortunately, I received some bad news from the hospital doctors. Lately, he has been resisting treatment and being somewhat combative with the hospital staff. He has had a few outbursts and the staff is real worried about him. It seems like a serious case of depression is setting in.

Although his wounds on the outside may look bad, they may never compare with the wounds he has on the inside.

I spoke with him on the phone this evening, and he seemed real down. The reality is that he still has a long road to recover and may never see again. This young man has everything to live for and is a true inspiration. He is exactly the kind of person we would all want in a brother, son, or friend. I feel obligated to try and rally some support for him. I know we have a lot of caring people out there who would love to do something special for an outstanding American who gave his all for his country.

Call to Action

If you know of any church groups, school room classes, or other benevolent organizations that would be interested in assisting this brave young man, please forward this message on to them.

He is a pretty typical young man, so he likes sports and other typical young men stuff. A small care package with some goodies and such would mean the world.

Again, please forward this message to as many people as you know. It would be so great if we can all give way together and show Hunter that his country will never forget his sacrifices or service. He is down and needs our help.

Thank you for your support, it means everything.

Please, Lord, help this young soldier get back to living his life as best he can.

The boys at Blackfive are on the case, so you know the cavalry is on the way.

You guys are right, we don’t know what he can or cannot do at this point, and sending him something he can’t enjoy is not a good idea. The Blackfive guys will know what is up before long and get the word out.

Thanks for doing your part too, Michelle.

I emailed Tammy asking what would be good to send. The update from the BlueStar mom said he has a DVD player and an iPod. In the email, I asked if he had a video game system of any kind. I know they’re an extremely useful tool with regaining hand/eye coordination. As soon as I hear back, I’ll post what she said.

Just FYI, and I’m sure that many of you have experienced it too, but I have spent months into years sitting in military hospitals, ERs and waiting rooms. I hope things have changed, expecially in military hospitals but…

Nothing sucks worse than being confined to a ward over a 3-day holiday weekend and the cable goes out on Friday (no one can fix it until Tuesday) and the videos have already been reserved by other patients/families.

Is there a family member that gets to stay on the ward with this soldier too? I dont know what the rules are at the VA.

Hmmm, Palo Alto…. and my co-worker is covering a project in Santa Clara this week instead of me…

Wow, thanks Brian! That means a lot to me.

This story just breaks my heart. And you know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of stories just like this that we don’t hear about. We owe it to all of those unknowns to take care of PFC Levine.

Great idea. I can’t afford a Wii on my own (or I’d so own one), but maybe several of us can chip it – the Wii has, I’ve read, been very beneficial in helping people recover and is used in physical therapy.

The website was also “bandwith exceeded” for me. My guess, socky, is it’s getting loads of hits…which can only be a good thing.

Sent Tammy an e-mail and I’m waiting for a response.

Card and letter on the way!!

I have a good friend whom I served with in Vietnam, who essentially had the same thing happen to him when three AK rounds slammed into his left cheek and literally ripped his face off. Jerry is now in his early sixties and lives a rewarding life, but he went through years of physical and mental hell.

I’ve lost touch with him in recent years, but I’ll try to find him and also get him to send Hunter a letter, and maybe pay a visit.

God bless all who serve, but a special blessing to those who suffer as PFC Levine is. I believe it is a worse fate than being KIA.

I received a response from Tammy this morning about what we could sent Hunter:

    For Care packages –
Socks, anything with sports, like Cowboys or Astros, likes LSU, and audio books or cd’s, most any kind, but most likely country western, jazz, not the blues–we want to be uplifting–and anything current for a young man.

Large type books, paper back, which are lighter to hold, are good. Quilt, lap robe, blankets, pillow–texture is important, since he can’t see hardly at all, but hopefully will regain full sight. I would pick books of sports or classics, he has received Harry Potter already, maybe fantasy. No war, at this point, but maybe thrillers, who-dun-its, etc, just not real physically violent things–he has had plenty of that at this point.

A sports cap, any sort of team would be good, since the scars are a self conscious thing. He does have an iPod and he does have limited vision. He has a DVD player so non violent movies would be good. He also have some lollipops so things like that would have with his therapy as well.

Thanks for the info Mookie. I met a Marine Vet, (Vietnam 1967-68) who has become a VA Hospital Pastoral Counselor in California, through another blog. I didn’t realize how close to the situation he is.

    From his recent note:

PFC. Hunter Levine has some terrible injuries and a very significant part of his healing will be learning strategies and techniques to cope with his anger and frustration and depression. Some of his days are better than others…Several veterans from my Saturday morning men’s Bible study have visited Hunter, and I have exchanged emails with his 1st Sgt. Brian M. Disque. And he seems to respond better to vets and vet families than to those without that background. I will be visiting Brian tomorrow or Wednesday…Sometimes the most important one is treating the heart of the warrior. This can be difficult, because many a young stud, when asked how he is doing will respond with “fine” when he really is not. So, deeper questioning, or sometimes just a willingness to sit quietly and wait for conversation to develop, if at all, is useful…Your prayers for him are coveted…I’ll keep you in mine.

Mook, couple this information with yours, and it becomes clear that gifts – void of violent content, based in healing and repair and centered in Hunter’s social interests – are very important right now.

    Thanks again.

I want to thank a soldier for his service and remind him, just as I always told my son when he was in Iraq, that more people than he will ever know, pray for him every day.
