    You guys are right, we don’t know what he can or cannot do at this point, and sending him something he can’t enjoy is not a good idea. The Blackfive guys will know what is up before long and get the word out.

    Nothing sucks worse than being confined to a ward over a 3-day holiday weekend and the cable goes out on Friday (no one can fix it until Tuesday) and the videos have already been reserved by other patients/families.

    Is there a family member that gets to stay on the ward with this soldier too? I dont know what the rules are at the VA.

    Hmmm, Palo Alto…. and my co-worker is covering a project in Santa Clara this week instead of me…

    This story just breaks my heart. And you know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of stories just like this that we don’t hear about. We owe it to all of those unknowns to take care of PFC Levine.

    I have a good friend whom I served with in Vietnam, who essentially had the same thing happen to him when three AK rounds slammed into his left cheek and literally ripped his face off. Jerry is now in his early sixties and lives a rewarding life, but he went through years of physical and mental hell.

    I’ve lost touch with him in recent years, but I’ll try to find him and also get him to send Hunter a letter, and maybe pay a visit.

    God bless all who serve, but a special blessing to those who suffer as PFC Levine is. I believe it is a worse fate than being KIA.

    For Care packages –
    Socks, anything with sports, like Cowboys or Astros, likes LSU, and audio books or cd’s, most any kind, but most likely country western, jazz, not the blues–we want to be uplifting–and anything current for a young man.

    Large type books, paper back, which are lighter to hold, are good. Quilt, lap robe, blankets, pillow–texture is important, since he can’t see hardly at all, but hopefully will regain full sight. I would pick books of sports or classics, he has received Harry Potter already, maybe fantasy. No war, at this point, but maybe thrillers, who-dun-its, etc, just not real physically violent things–he has had plenty of that at this point.

    A sports cap, any sort of team would be good, since the scars are a self conscious thing. He does have an iPod and he does have limited vision. He has a DVD player so non violent movies would be good. He also have some lollipops so things like that would have with his therapy as well.

    From his recent note:

    PFC. Hunter Levine has some terrible injuries and a very significant part of his healing will be learning strategies and techniques to cope with his anger and frustration and depression. Some of his days are better than others…Several veterans from my Saturday morning men’s Bible study have visited Hunter, and I have exchanged emails with his 1st Sgt. Brian M. Disque. And he seems to respond better to vets and vet families than to those without that background. I will be visiting Brian tomorrow or Wednesday…Sometimes the most important one is treating the heart of the warrior. This can be difficult, because many a young stud, when asked how he is doing will respond with “fine” when he really is not. So, deeper questioning, or sometimes just a willingness to sit quietly and wait for conversation to develop, if at all, is useful…Your prayers for him are coveted…I’ll keep you in mine.

    Mook, couple this information with yours, and it becomes clear that gifts – void of violent content, based in healing and repair and centered in Hunter’s social interests – are very important right now.

    I drove down to the VA hospital this afernoon from Half Moon Bay. As requested, I checked with his nurse first. Apparently, Hunter received some bad news and has been pretty down. The good news, he has been receiving visitors. I got a phone number to call first before driving down next time.

    I want to thank a soldier for his service and remind him, just as I always told my son when he was in Iraq, that more people than he will ever know, pray for him every day.
