What happened when they “spread the wealth” in Zimbabwe
The Raleigh News and Observer profiles a couple from Zimbabwe that was forced to escape their native country when the thug-o-crats decided to “spread the wealth around.”
Sitting at the kitchen table in the couple’s apartment in Ayden, Helen remembers vividly what happened next. Two Mazda pickups, bristling with armed police, were waiting for her. Their leader snatched the gate’s keys from the employee and turned to Helen.
“This is no longer your property. You have 24 hours to get out,” he told her. If you don’t, “we’ll kill you or put you in jail, whichever you prefer.”
It was not an idle threat. In 2000, war veterans killed a neighbor after he refused to leave his farm.
The Herbsts prided themselves on the relationships they formed with their black employees, many of whom worked with the family for years. The couple had provided a pre-school on the property for workers’ children, and a free health clinic where mothers could take their babies. Wally had hoped that his family’s longstanding ties to the area would spare his farm from seizure.
Frantic packing
In the end, it did not matter. With the help of neighbors and friends and their vehicles, the Herbsts were forced to pack up as much as they could. Police pilfered from the trucks as the woman who would be moving into their home gave demands.
The Herbsts were barred from removing anything needed to run the farm, including tractors. The farm would be turned over to a local politician, and his wife wanted some things inside the home as well.
This irritated Helen, who picked up a pottery vase her daughter Pam had made in school.
“I said, ‘Do you want this?’ and she said ‘yes.’ I drew my hand back, and I turned around and smashed it on the floor.”
She laughs about it now, but Wally and Helen haven’t been back home since. Pam, who lives less than 70 miles from the farm, hasn’t returned, either. “To be honest, I don’t know if I’d want to go back,” she says on the phone from her home in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. “I’d rather have these pictures in my mind of how it looked when I left.”
The Herbsts’ son, John, returned soon after to tend to the cattle, only to be kidnapped and held for ransom at the farm.
The kidnappers had gained access to the Herbsts’ bank records. They demanded exactly what the family had on deposit. Helen doesn’t remember the precise figure, but it was millions of Zimbabwe dollars. It took Helen five trips with a suitcase to fill the back seat of her car with enough money to free their son.
Although she can retell almost the entire story without becoming emotional, Helen tears up when speaking of her three children, two of whom live in Zimbabwe. She is not sure when she will see them, or her grandchild, again, but Helen and Wally needed to leave.

I see this stuff going and and I listen to the rabid Facade Obama supporters and I ask myself… “Has this country lost its mind?”
I was in a Publix over the weekend and there was a black woman in front of me in the check out line. She had one of the ‘Change is coming!” with a picture of Facade on it. She turned and saw me looking at it and hones to God she said: “Get used to it white boy, the days of people like you are over. We are in charge now!” I fear she may be right.
In 1959, we all thought JFK should be president. He was so young, so much better-looking than Richard Nixon, and he had a beautiful wife. We didn’t know anything about where he stood politically, but that didn’t matter. He looked like he’d be a great president. Oh, and we were in junior high. Apparently that ignoramus spirit lives on in my fellow Americans, but this time a lot of them are old enough to vote, God help us.

I always use to say, and I hear the same refrain when moderates and conservatives lament the lack of history on the part of liberals to the abuses of their positions. But, I’m not so sure anymore that it’s a lack of understanding about what is to come. What I fear now is that they completely understand and welcome this sort of change. I mean, how else can you explain Sean Penn’s trip to Venezuela to see Chavez again? You have to believe he knows what Chavez has been doing to the people of his country.

I used to think Obama was math challenged – you can’t give a tax cut to 95%, increase spending dramatcially and raise it on only 5% and have it work out. But then I realized I was deficient in the definition of “CUT”. Obama will raise taxes on EVERYBODY who pays taxes – He’ll raise it dramatically on “the rich” and SAY to the rest “well since I increased the tax on the richest 20% and you only 10%, you received a tax cut”. It’s Washington speak.

I think you are all giving Obama way too much credit. Remember if (BIG “if”) he gets in office, he will have to perform. No evidence he has ever done that in his life.
I think his execution is going to be dismal. He may end up with his current supporters disliking him more than we do.

The government taxes income primarily; not wealth – with the exception of vehicle (“personal property”) excise taxes/”registration”; real estate “property” taxes; and inheritance “death” taxes.

With all these Spread the Wealth revolutions much of the wealth building class fled. If we fall their will be no safe haven; the revolution will have entered the state of Eternal Revolution-The Liberal Dream for generations. But for the moment we need to worry: how many of the Zimbabwe refugees and Lost Boys from other parts of Africa are bringing the revolution, and Islam, with them? We are being played.

It is indeed. While his tax plan would probably give folks like us a bit more in our take home, he also plans to rescind the Bush tax cuts, and his projections do not address that.
While the second round of tax cuts actually did stimulate the economy, they were on dividends and capital gains, and therefore didn’t impact people’s paychecks.
The first round of tax cuts were indeed spread out over all income levels, rich and poor alike, and rescinding them will amount to a tax increase on all of us.

It’s my understanding that at one historical point the continent of Africa was predominantly Christian, before Islam took it over in an attempt to obliterate all-things-Christian.

“Spreading the wealth around” has been tried, in various nations, for a long time. Guess what? Everywhere, it resulted in widespread misery and poverty. And the two biggest ideologies about “spreading the wealth” – communism and socialism – are responsible for the deaths of millions of folks in the 20th century. No, scratch that, hundreds of millions.
And – in modern-day China – the communist government is still killing/jailing dissidents, forcibly aborting and/or sterilizing its people, and giving up safety for the sake of mass production (see the recent melamine crisis).
That’s the problem.
So, when I drive around the neighborhoods, I look at the houses with “Obama/Biden” signs out front. I – who live in a simple apartment – am steaking out the new digs I’ll take when Obama “redistributes” the wealth of others my way.
What’s your house look like? Wanna share? What’s in your bank account? I’ll take half, thankyouverymuch. It is – after all – patriotic and “good” for the nation, right?

Good grief, lgm, can you really be that clueless! The US Constitution specifically forbade an income tax. In fact the “tradition” is less than 100 years old at this point and the adoption of this “tradition” helped start the long, slow slide of this great nation away from its founding principles.

In order for “law” to have meaning, it must be constant. NOT a living breathing constitution – but one where the words as written still have the same meaning. One where judges do not have the power to re-define words to fit some social construct. Am I missing something?

Several things come to mind. First the notion that if you equally redistribute the wealth among everyone in the US, within 1, 2, or 3 generations, it will largely have gone back to those who work for it and taken from those who don’t. Unless of course there are govt programs in place to prevent that. I’m also reminded of the aphorism “the world is like a pig’s tail”. If you try to straighten it out, then it will just curl back into a pig’s tail. You could make it permanently straight with heat and pressure, but then it wouldn’t be a pig’s tail anymore! It would be some straight thing, a mangled pig’s tail. One also thinks of what Jesus said, “The poor will always be with us”. Despite LBJ and his War on Poverty. And finally, from Tao Te Ching #29:

When Obama allows the Bush taxcuts to lapse – a tax increase – and imposes increasingly higher taxes on small businesses, the barter system will gain more and more popularity as it did after the Carter recession. Work will be traded and any differences paid in cash.
The citizens of this country have always found a way around a difficult situation. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and avoid paying the taxes Obama wants.
Won’t those who pay no taxes howl when their credits aren’t forth coming and those increased revenues Obama is counting on don’t marterialize or disappear after they do.
He’ll have no choice but to raise taxes even more to pay for all his welfare, socialistic programs he’s promised.
He knows that, but as a GOP plant, diversion and equivocating obfuscation is all he has to contribute. (I hated Western Civ/history in college, but even I know Hitler was a Socialist.)
