What happened when they “spread the wealth” in Zimbabwe
The Raleigh News and Observer profiles a couple from Zimbabwe that was forced to escape their native country when the thug-o-crats decided to “spread the wealth around.”
Sitting at the kitchen table in the couple’s apartment in Ayden, Helen remembers vividly what happened next. Two Mazda pickups, bristling with armed police, were waiting for her. Their leader snatched the gate’s keys from the employee and turned to Helen.
“This is no longer your property. You have 24 hours to get out,” he told her. If you don’t, “we’ll kill you or put you in jail, whichever you prefer.”
It was not an idle threat. In 2000, war veterans killed a neighbor after he refused to leave his farm.
The Herbsts prided themselves on the relationships they formed with their black employees, many of whom worked with the family for years. The couple had provided a pre-school on the property for workers’ children, and a free health clinic where mothers could take their babies. Wally had hoped that his family’s longstanding ties to the area would spare his farm from seizure.
Frantic packing
In the end, it did not matter. With the help of neighbors and friends and their vehicles, the Herbsts were forced to pack up as much as they could. Police pilfered from the trucks as the woman who would be moving into their home gave demands.
The Herbsts were barred from removing anything needed to run the farm, including tractors. The farm would be turned over to a local politician, and his wife wanted some things inside the home as well.
This irritated Helen, who picked up a pottery vase her daughter Pam had made in school.
“I said, ‘Do you want this?’ and she said ‘yes.’ I drew my hand back, and I turned around and smashed it on the floor.”
She laughs about it now, but Wally and Helen haven’t been back home since. Pam, who lives less than 70 miles from the farm, hasn’t returned, either. “To be honest, I don’t know if I’d want to go back,” she says on the phone from her home in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. “I’d rather have these pictures in my mind of how it looked when I left.”
The Herbsts’ son, John, returned soon after to tend to the cattle, only to be kidnapped and held for ransom at the farm.
The kidnappers had gained access to the Herbsts’ bank records. They demanded exactly what the family had on deposit. Helen doesn’t remember the precise figure, but it was millions of Zimbabwe dollars. It took Helen five trips with a suitcase to fill the back seat of her car with enough money to free their son.
Although she can retell almost the entire story without becoming emotional, Helen tears up when speaking of her three children, two of whom live in Zimbabwe. She is not sure when she will see them, or her grandchild, again, but Helen and Wally needed to leave.

Husband/mother-in-law are South African–all have become American citizens since.
In-laws all still live in South Africa despite US citizenship. It has changed a lot too, but Mother in law born there & you know how that is…

Check the link though, Odinga’s ODM (Orange DEMOCRATIC Movement) signed a memorandum of agreement with National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), agreeing tto remake Kenya as a Islamic state with Shariah Law as it’s only “justice” system, should he win the Presidency. He planned to outlaw all Christian faith.
Odinga is Obama’s cousin. They have kept in touch, even talking EVERY DAY during the first few weeks following his loss (and the state of the “civil” unrest – read: ethnic cleansing of the Christians). Obama spent tax-payer dollars traveling to Kenya to campaign WITH Odinga when he was in the US Senate.

A young friend of mine was from a prominent British family that owned a large coffee plantation in Zimbabwe. He was injured and his girlfriend was killed when their jeep they were riding in was blow up by insurgent guerrillas. His family fled to Tanzania and my friend came to the US. Years later the Zimbabwe government invited him back to run, what is now a collective farm and help return it to profitability. The government couldn’t make system work and my young friend probably couldn’t either. I’ve had no word from him since his return.

Last night, I talked to some teenagers about what they were learning in Social Studies this semester. They said they had “studied” the election and the KKK.
I was watching Hannity’s America at the time so I had them watch the part of regarding Bill Ayers.
They had never heard of Ayers, but they had seen Obamas commercials. They said McCain is best friends with Bush and why did I think Obama was a terrorist.
I asked them if the KKK was started as a Republican or as a Democratic organization.
They didnt really know the difference in the parties, but they said “Whatever party George Bush and the white people are is the party of the KKK. And it cant be the Dems because the Dems are black.”
There’s your education system right there – and this is a 95% caucasian school.

My boss thinks the Heath Schuler wing of Congressional Dems would not let Obama have everything he wants, fearing for their election chances in 2010, but I’m not so sure. There are about 40 members of the so called Democrat “Blue Dog Coalition”, but I suspect some are just members because of their home districts, but with Nancy Pelosi expecting, and possibly having a 250 to 185 advantage in the House next year, the GOP Congressman would have to vote as a bloc, including the Northeastern RINOs, and basically all the ‘Blue Dogs’ would have to buck the majority to stop anything. Not likely.
I think Pelosi will send up the MoveOn.org/ACORN wing of the party’s fondest wishes, they’ll get through a near filibuster proof Senate, and Obama will sign legislation designed to end capitalism in this country, weaken the influence of talk radio, whittle away gun rights, and just one of the four Constitutionalists, Alito, Roberts, Scalia or Thomas, or the coin-flip Justice, Kennedy, has to die in the next four years for Obama to have a Marxist rubber stamp SCOTUS.
BTW, my understanding is that it won’t be until 2012 that the majority of the Senate seats up for election will be held by Democrats, so Obama may lose the filibuster proof Senate margin in 2010 if he is a big enough disaster, but he probably won’t lose his overall Senate majority.
So was Adolf Hitler, for that matter…
I don’t think Obama has quite the Congressional supermajority needed to overturn the 22nd Amendment, so he can’t run again in 2016 unless he wants to declare some kind of state of emergency (which his rubber stamp SCOTUS, if in place, could approve), but Michelle Obama could always serve the next two terms when the vote is thoroughly ACORN-ized and ‘The Fairness Doctrine’ has been applied to sharply curtail talk radio and bloggers.
Yeah, pretty much prepare for the worst. America won’t be the same – but worse – if Obama wins Nov. 4.

Even if we have an honest election, and even if McCain/Palin win, Obama will have his team of lawyers issue lawsuit after lawsuit, the people of ACORN will say that the Republicans “stole” the election, and there will likely be race riots on a scale never seen before in this country. They will have nothing to stop them from playing “Animal Farm” with our Constitution, and controlling all businesses that are profitable. Socialism just doesn’t work; you can see that in history and in current events today. One main reason it doesn’t work, is because it stifles the spirit of bettering oneself. For example, why bother improving a product or designing a new invention, when there is no payback for the time, and work that it took to provide it? For example, making a new drug to save lives. It takes a fortune to develop a drug and many years of testing to get FDA approval. Yet, with more regulation and higher taxes on development, why should drug companies here bother? Other socialist countries don’t bother. They look to the U.S. Not any more. It’s best to “let someone else do it”, so no-one does. Why work hard at your occupation when there is little reward? The only “reward” is paying more in taxes to support those who don’t work at all, or little. Already we see the government punishing those who develop new ideas and profit by them. “Tax the wealthy”. Eastern European countries have found the flat tax to be even better than graduated taxes. Less enforcement, more business, and no special interest profiteering; not to mention the increased revenues. Albania is a good example. Look to increased corporate taxes too (now at 36%). No wonder businesses are leaving the U.S. and setting up HQs in places like Ireland (15%). Ireland is booming economically. It’s all about power and catering to special interests in order to remain in office. It’s a “me first, party second, country third” politician that controls our defense and economy. Be prepared for more, patchthebun. When nothing can stop them, they will run amok.
The problem in Zimbabwe is that the white farmers/ranchers who are being/have been dispossessed are not losing their places to the poor and landless. They are losing their property to the cronies of Bobby Mugabe. The government is “of the thugocracy, for the thugocrasy, by the thugocracy.” They could/can do this because they isolate the farmers/ranchers and overwhelm them one-by-one.
I’ve got advice for those who would take my stuff: Bring friends and pack a lunch. It won’t be that easy.

Well, you can’t ignore the effect of communism on the upper class in Russia. They all fled the nation or were murdered. The party that emerged to control the state were largerly NOT the pre-revolutionary rich elites.

When taxes on the “wealthy” get too high, they just move their money and their businesses out of the country. They’re doing that now. Politicians moan and groan to the public about companies moving overseas, yet with their next breath, they talk of taxing them even more. You want business to boom and get them back to the U.S.? Cut taxes, as President Kennedy said. His “paradox of economics” speech would have him tarred and feathered in the democratic party today. That’s when he stated that, to raise revenue, you cut taxes. The dems made a mockery of “trickle down” economics. Well, it’s happening today. Raise taxes and enact more business regulations and the cost “trickles down” to the consumer…you and me.

My ex still to this day, has no idea how much rich she could have been a few years ago. Her attorney locked my accounts down so I couldnt trade on mine. So I passively refused to manage her stock accounts for her (btw my name wasnt on hers) and I gave her no financial advice as to when to sell when hers were at the top of the market. So while I was diversified, I just sat there and watch hers go belly up and I even let mine drop so she received a minimal 50%. I doubt she even knew how to write her part of the losses off…. nope not calling her to tell her today either.

Sadly, I think you are wrong. When the supposed revenue stream doesn’t materialize (needed to continue to blind/buy the masses), the ruling class will confiscate wealth. Of course, they will do it in the way “most fair” – taking from those who earned it through hard work first (those dirty capitalists). They will say “it’s for the good of the country that you give up your property (or its proxy – $$)”

This is starting to sound crazy around here – no need for that.
There is going to be a fairly slow unraveling, but you won’t see it and it will be slow enough and take long enough that fingers will be pointed to the current administration….even if the current economic meltdown was the most successful bi-partisian effort since our victory in WWII.
I’m thinking along the lines of getting involved with education – not just my children, but something akin to education of kids to understand the basic economic principles that Henry Hazlitt tried to teach Americans. Such basic understanding of the “right” behind capitalism is no longer being taught in our schools. This is where the real problem is.
That, along with an increasingly smaller portion of the population actually paying federal income taxes is a real problem as the party that gets in when we reach critical mass of 60% people not paying Federal income taxes, they’ll just stay in power – well, you see what goes on in France and Germany with the entrenched interests.
But an immediate meltdown? The jackboots and the knock on your door in the middle of the night?
No, it won’t go like that….the country will go downhill with more of a whimper.
