No not apathetic, more like the Italian Joe's mentioned in subsequent posts.

A key point I was trying to make, is that, to many very savy financial minds, we are well on our way to socialism...Obama is just going to help seal the deal.

On the plus side, I may help free my wife up so that she can help the republicans campaign in the state (last minute, but we have 4 kids, a 1 yr old included) by getting my mom to come by and help watch the kids (she's in the next state over, an Obama gimmee state). Our state, McCain has a fighting chance.

The long term of this is a wake up call to me - I must get involved with teaching the virtues of capitalism, outside of my family; teaching the virtures of community service, outside of my family; and teaching the virtues of small government, outside my family.

May I suggest a 'preemptive strike' on socialism? I think the same TECHNIQUE THAT THIS GUY USED TO SMASH SOCIALISM ought to work even better and faster considering our generally cushy life style. (I mean really, when's the last time anyone waited in line to buy toilet paper in the USA?)

If BHO gets elected, the longer we wait - the more damage will be done to our country. But that 5%, the ones already paying almost SIXTY PERCENT OF THE TAB can JUST NIP IT IN THE BUD and SAY NO to socialism starting on November 5th. There is really nothing the socialists can do to stop them. SOLIDARITY!

Wayiwalk, In regards to that...she's right. Maybe she is a devoted Christian who believes and has comfort in God's will. To be honest, I am working toward having that kind of trust (too?)....

On October 21st, 2008 at 8:52 pm, wayiwalk said:

I think your 40 yr.old retired friend is quite apathetic and as long as he is taken care of...so be it (socialism).
More thoughts:
My husband (hard core Conservative) believes that people who are resourceful will figure out work-arounds (cash and NIMN) to any financial road barriers imposed by Obama's core beliefs (income fairness /sarc). Hubby deals with many Joe the Plumber types in Europe. The 'Joes' in Italy have figured it out so well that the government's Guardia di Finanza is the IRS on steroids. It's ashame as a lot of human energy is expended on getting around 'socialism' when it doesn't have to be in the first place (for America).
What's more scary to me (also hc Conservative) is best described as what has happened in France relative to gun laws (unless they have changed in the last few years). A jewelry store owner can not have a gun for protection in his store (without breaking the law). If a robber comes into the store and holds a gun on you, you are to do as he says and report it to the police. Even if you are shot, you may not defend your property or yourself in your store. This 'Jewelry Store Joe' was told by police that they are to work under the impression that the robber 'needed' the goods/money, else he wouldn't have robbed the store.
Be it for taxes or gun laws or freedom of speech, I see the Joes eventually just giving up....not worth it....no more dreams....A nation of no more dreams - just like it was in Russia for so long.

Obama is not hope. What the heck are they teaching in political science and history classes??? Self esteem???

Regarding the Black Swan theory - I ran that idea on a very prescient finance site last night - and the reply from the community was essentially - "the country becoming socialist isn't a black swan because everyone already sees that coming".

I guess by everyone, that means, everyone with a deep interest in finance/economics, that's ahead of the curve.

Oh boy, we're in trouble.

Talked to a buddy of mine this morning, a fellow who retired (quite comfortably) when he was 40. His comment was, first they'll come for your income, then they'll raise the death tax, then it'll be your wealth.

To which he finished by saying - good thing that nothing I own is in my name...

But that doesn't help the rest of us, and it sure doesn't help MY children.

For me wife, who is actually a Republican (as opposed to me, an independent), she's tired of my disaster theories, and says to my question to her - are your ready for the Greatest Depression?

Her answer - it'll be what it'll be!

Very interesting this Black Swan thing - a good read.

The Black Swan analogy would be a good one to get the attention of those 18 - 30 year old 'intellectuals' (/sarc) who believe that Obama will bring the utopia they envision. These voters lack the maturity/life experiences to become (sadly) cynical.

This baby-boomer doesn't see Obama as a Black Swan - my gut and eventually my brain told me what to expect with him. You could see it early on and I know I'm repeating myself (#47) with these 2 simple points:
1.Hand not on heart during National Anthem.
2.No flag pin on lapel early in primaries.
Very simple and not subtle with tremendous implications.
Those two simple gestures should not be overlooked - - Occam's razor.

I would be willing to bet that at my community college they know better than to resort to ad hominem attacks when they have nothing better to argue with.
