The Beirut barracks bombing: 25 years ago today

beirut barracks 1983

October 23, 1983.

On that day, 241 U.S. Marines, soldiers, and sailors were murdered as they slept by truck bomb jihadists — who were waging a war on us long before we woke up and started fighting the war on them.

Barack Obama thinks they need more “compassion” and education. He wants to pull out and “end” the war, not win it.

A recipe, in other words, for more Beirut bombings.

Must-read: Commanding officer Col. Tim Geraghty’s remembrance of the Beirut bombings in the NYPost.

From Sgt. Melvin Lopez, Jr. at ArlingtonNationalCemetery.net:

On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 a.m., a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where the Marine Barracks was located.

After turning onto an access road leading to the compound, the driver rushed through a barbed-wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through the gate, and slammed into the lobby of the barracks.

The driver detonated explosives with the power equal to more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. The explosion crumbled the four-story building, crushing service members to death while they were sleeping.

The terrorist attack killed 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members who were stationed there to help keep the peace in a nation torn by war.

It was the bloodiest day in the Corps’ history since World War II, when Marines fought to secure Iwo Jima.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

There is a garden of trees outside the city — one tree for every US Service man killed during this attack. My platoon had the honor or representing the Marine Corps in a ceremony held the in 1994. They were planting another tree for a Marine major who was hanged by jihadis the year before.

As dearly as I love Reagan (may he rest in peace), this mission was flawed from the beginning and a mistake given the conditions on the ground and the small force used. That takes nothing oway from my brother and the brave friends he lost.

It was also the opening shot on the war in which we are still engaged in; a war we will lose considerable ground in if Obama is elected. That is why we have to vote for McCain, even if some of us need to hold our noses doing so. We don’t need any more Beiruts.

    3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

    4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, [a]
    I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

You’ve walked though the valley of the shadow of death.
Now, you’re dwelling in the house of the Lord.

It is good to remember who did it. It is good to remember the sacrifice of those brave Marines, soldiers and sailors. God bless all of them.

It is also essential to remember the lessons learned that resulted in officers not properly securing their perimeter and creating such and inviting target by not tactically disbursing their people. Some basic fundamentals got ignored by leaders and their people paid for it.

Those lessons learned need to be remembered as well. They have been, thankfully, but I hope we never forget them either.

Those who lost their lives should be honored and remembered. Though, I wonder, is it fair to say that we cut and ran from Lebanon?

Sen Obama wants to increase our efforts in Afghanistan, and decrease our efforts in Iraq. So, I am not sure if it is fair to say that he wants to pull out and “end” the war, and not win it.

16 Saudi Arabians, on the orders of a Saudi Arabian, living in Afghanistan, a country in league with Pakistan, ruled by Musharraf, who came to power in a coup, highjacked airplanes and used them as weapons against us. Who would you attack? Morrocco?

As for the War on Terror, it is about who, what, where and how. We all know why.

We went into Iraq and achieved every objective we set out to achieve. Unfortunately, the bar has been set higher and higher with each passing day.

As for Sen Obama wanting to understand, it is more a reflection of our compassion as a nation. When we enter into combat we are cautious and strive to minimize collateral damage. I suppose he attempted to remind us of our better angels, because my first thought was that a nuclear response would have best served us sated my anger.

Finally, understanding does not mean we do not kick in doors and take out the bad guys.

Obama and people who think like him simply don’t understand that you cannot reason with terrorists whether they are Americans (William Ayers, Timothy McVeigh) or islamic jihadists like the suicide truck bomber in Beirut. Obama’s friend Ayers believes (still believes) that murdering innocent, defenseless people is justified if it helps to force their sick, irrational, view of the World on other people. I have to disagree. I think the opening shot was fired in 1784/1785 when the Barbary pirates decided to demand ransoms for our ships.

Even the Congress was told back then: “It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once.”

Yes, our Marines landed on their shores back then with the Navy led by Old Ironsides, and while we won that battle, the war had just begun.

Michelle, thank you for this reminder.

I would like to also remember the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia.

At the time, I was a young Marine floating around in the Sea of Japan with the 31st MEU, unaware that a good friend from high school would be seriously wounded.

He was an Air Force MP and just had been relieved of duty and returned to his room when the bomb went off. The blast threw him across the room and schrapnel tore through his legs. He had a very long recovery. I thank God that I am still able to talk to him today. Some of his buddies didn’t survive.

As far as the bombing, it was a Hizbolah group that smuggled arms into Saudi from Lebanon. The stupid thing, they weren’t allowed to be “locked and loaded” outside the compound.

That’s one of the reasons why when asked what I did when I was in the military I say, “Nothing, I served under Clinton.”

They didnt learn – heres an example.

Just days before Khobar, we were in what I consider to be a hostile country, training “allies”. Our entire security force was ordered off of the ship to conduct the training. BUT we had to leave ALL OF OUR AMMUNITION on the ship so that we wouldnt offend our host country’s sensibilities. (Well……. we officially “left our ammo” behind, that is)

Lets just say, that one of our warships could have been seized with a BB-gun that day. You all have no idea how many USS Coles there could have been, it wasnt a chance occurence.

But dont worry, just go back to sleep. The world will love us unconditionally on November 5th.

The military knew that it had to have good security around the perimeter of the barracks. But the State Department would not allow it and said it would smack of occupation and might “anger the moderate Arabs”. So only one unarmed soldier, who was a kid from Connecticut, was allowed outside the barracks. And Hezbollah could not believe that the US State Department was knuckling under to every Hezbollah demand. Some months after the mass murder, the New York Times did an exhaustive report on the security failures that led to the mass murder. In addition, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger would not allow US soldiers who were wounded to be airlifted to Israeli hospitals, which were only minutes away. The Rambam Hospital in Haifa specialized in treating terrorism victims and offered its services. Weinberger decided that the Saudi princes might be upset if we did this so he issued orders that all wounded soldiers be airlifted to Germany, which was hours away. Bill Safire wrote a column at the time about how Weinberger’s Arabist policies may have led to the needless death of American soldiers who could have been treated quickly and efficiently in Israel. The whole episode was a disgrace.

Which we are proud to serve
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

God’s blessings on these fine Marines, and blessings to all who have served, or will serve. Never forget. I will not submit!

I always wondered why / how the Marines failed to properly secure their perimeter around the barracks. In my limited Army basic training the combat experienced drill / training sergeant always taught us to think like the enemy would. Survey the scene, and plan to slow down / take out any potential attack. The Marines I knew were much better trained in this than us Army guys–they were fighters, I was an engineer.

The answer was provided above–political and U.S. State Department “sensitivities” overrode good military judgement–and hundreds of our people paid the price for “foggy bottom”’s errors. The State Department seems useless to me–and dangerous to our country. Unchain the military and let them do their jobs for us.

It will suck bigtime to be in the military when the O’Bummer wins–much more political correctness. However, a few well spoken words from the Messiah will change the hearts of the terrorists who continue the 1400 year long war against all non Muslims. Change you can believe in is coming soon!

For all of our fellow Marines, FMF Corpsmen and all other Military Personnel who faithfully served our Country and who sacrificed and bled that our people might have freedom, justice, and the right to worship Thee in their own way. We pray for Thy tender care and the everlasting hope that some day we may be reunited at Thy feet in Peace and that war and all the attendant evils will no more demand the sacrifice of the flower of human kind. Thou hast said unto us, “Greater love hath no man that he lay down his life for his friend.” Reward those of our Marines, FMF Corpsmen and all other Military Personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice of their life, a way possible only with Thee, for we know Thy ways are just.

Little did I know that years later I’d be a target of those bastards in the Khobar Towers.

Little did I dream that I’d be denied the chance to shoot back by a spineless administration.

Little did I imagine someone who hallucinates that we drove Hezbollah out of Lebanon would be in line for vice president.

The “Shut up white boy” lady – one can well imagine – hasn’t had a thought ever concerning the big picture, nor even remotely has a clue much beyond “gimme”. She is emblematic of much of the left’s constituency which consists of truly ignorant people waiting for someone to give them something. The party that promises the most gets their vote. “Spread the wealth around” isn’t scary for them, it’s their mantra. And so we have Obama and Biden, close to being elected. One smart and dangerous, the other stupid and dangerous.

RIP brave Marines. You are not forgotten by your brothers and sisters in arms.

I wonder how many Americans even remember Beirut? Or even care? Or is it a far away place that doesn’t affect them or their lives?

These last 8 years I’ve learned the brutal reality that many Americans don’t give a sh!t about anything or anybody but themselves. With a few exceptions, Americans have become selfish and inward-looking. They’ve become revisionists instead of visionaries. When faced with adversity or hardship they whine and complain while our military members do the fighting and dying.

I never used to think that Americans could be this way until I married a military member and found out first-hand the total ignorance and hysterical blindness of people who have no exposure to the military. I feel sad that everything that military members and their families have given is derided and looked down on by their fellow Americans.

I think this is why the military takes care of its own because they know that the civilian leadership and civilians at large can’t and won’t accept the necessity of a standing military in today’s world.

In 1968 and 1969, I was a 13-14 year old Catholic altar boy here in a Bay Area parish. We lost 238 boys in Nam in those 2 years. I later met a vet from New Jersey where they lost over 400 in those two years.

I served at nearly all of those funerals in my parish. Sometimes there were as many as 5 caskets for one service. They were 18 and 19 year old Marines.

Not only did they serve and make the ultimate sacrifice- their families served and gave the ultimate sacrifice: their first born.

Just this last week, at a tribal ceremony in Central California, the leadership held a closing ceremony for the American Indian vets who have gone on and who were with us there to end our year together.

My nephew was at Fallujah. He served for 18 months in Iraq. He is stronger for it. But he will never forget what he had to do to defeat the enemy.
May we never forget that we have enemies for whom death in Jihad is their only preferred alternative to life.

We do not forget our warriors. Ever. Let us not forget our warriors who protect us by doing what many in this country BELIEVE is irrelevant if we would just “talk” to them. It’s insulting.
