BUSTED: She made it all up

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 24, 2008 03:34 PM

Can I say I told you so?

I’ve covered hate crimes hoaxes long enough to know one when I smell one.

Those of you who trashed me in comments might want to think twice before doubting my instincts next time.

And those of you on the left who are now so interested in debunking despicable hate crimes might show a little more skepticism yourselves next time when similar narratives hit the news pages involving politically correct hoaxers who share your politics.

I told you so:

Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker; now she’s facing charges.

At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd’s injuries were self-inflicted.

Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.

Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect began beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Investigators asked Todd to return to the police station today for more questioning and to help them release a composite sketch of the suspect.

When she did, police say she admitted that she made the whole thing up and that it snowballed out of control.

Todd told investigators today that she “just wanted to tell the truth” – adding that she was neither robbed, nor attacked.

She said he believed she may have scratched the backward “B” on her own face because she was the only one in the car at the time. Todd told police that when saw was the “B” in her rearview mirror, she thought of Barack Obama.

Final lesson: Trust your instincts. Use your brains. Stop jumping every time Drudge hypes something in Armageddon-sized font.

This whole story had a strong “wait and see” feel to it, which makes me glad I didn’t say anything one way or the other on it when it first came out. Same thing with the Michelle Obama “lobster and caviar” or whatever story from a few days ago.

There’s much to be said for reserving immediate judgment. A lot fewer retractions and apologies to write that way.

    MM,

    For the record.

I never attacked you because your instincts told you this was BS. I reserved judgment until the whole story was out. I did ,however, express reservations about posting the screencaps of her social pages with the names of her “friends” on them. I still hold those reservations and I don’t see how it advanced the story at all.

Like I said before. Ms. Todd did this nasty piece of work, not her friends. Got that Rick?

With that being said I hope Ms. Todd gets the help she needs and I also hope she enjoys jail.

Oh and BTW, Ms. Todd, quit trying to lay the blame for your asshattery on someone/something else. You did this crap, grow up and own it.

That sounds like sour grapes from a likely buyer of bridges in Brookyln, Kid. Unless you had the noseplug on, this stunk in a mighty way from the get-go.

I’ll have an insultfest with you sometime after the election. That is unless you remember your twice made declaration to ignore me. Today has been a good day, and my mood is great. If you want, we can waste threads tearing down each other down the road, on a future day after 11/4/08.

Love ya sweetie. Some day we will find a common ground.

Maybe. We can shake hands and vote completely opposite of each other all of the time. I’m sure we have common ground on a few matters. Have a great weekend FamilyMan.

She did something she thought would help, but ultimately it is going to hurt.

Actually, I think this has really little to do with politics. I think she needs help. It’s obvious she wanted attention, but I would say that she got more attention than she was bargaining for. There’s probably something more personal that led her to this.

I want you all to notice that everyone of us current or former LEO’s on here said from the get go this was a hoax.

Then when the picture was released there was no doubt. We deal with this type of thing everyday and know what injuries look like and certainly know that no one who has just strong armed someone is going to stick around the scene because of a bloody bumper sticker. They got what they came for, the cash, now all they probably want to do is go get high. Most crackheads really aren’t politically active, just sayin’.

I’d say she’s more nuts than stupid. But stupid comes in a close second in this case.

By the way, F_O, it bugs me when people quote the classic writers and great ancient thinkers wrongly, so by way of a very short correction and atribution:

    “Stupid minds” (YouTube).

FM, neither should anyone. I think it’s just a sad case and she should be prosecuted, just like anyone who pulled this kind of stunt. It’s just my belief that the reason behind it was not political.

Actually I think the exact quote is “You earth people are stupid! Stupid, stupid, stupid!”

Plan 9 From Outerspace, written and directed by the incomparable Ed Wood.

Why does this election feel like something written and directed by him?
