BUSTED: She made it all up
Can I say I told you so?
I’ve covered hate crimes hoaxes long enough to know one when I smell one.
Those of you who trashed me in comments might want to think twice before doubting my instincts next time.
And those of you on the left who are now so interested in debunking despicable hate crimes might show a little more skepticism yourselves next time when similar narratives hit the news pages involving politically correct hoaxers who share your politics.
Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker; now she’s facing charges.
At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd’s injuries were self-inflicted.
Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.
Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect began beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.
Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.
Investigators asked Todd to return to the police station today for more questioning and to help them release a composite sketch of the suspect.
When she did, police say she admitted that she made the whole thing up and that it snowballed out of control.
Todd told investigators today that she “just wanted to tell the truth” – adding that she was neither robbed, nor attacked.
She said he believed she may have scratched the backward “B” on her own face because she was the only one in the car at the time. Todd told police that when saw was the “B” in her rearview mirror, she thought of Barack Obama.
Final lesson: Trust your instincts. Use your brains. Stop jumping every time Drudge hypes something in Armageddon-sized font.

I find your skepticism refreshing. Too many people will believe any old negative story just because its about their rivals.
Devotion to truth is important.
We all must be careful of lies from all sides.
I’d say she’s more nuts than stupid. But stupid comes in a close second in this case.
By the way, F_O, it bugs me when people quote the classic writers and great ancient thinkers wrongly, so by way of a very short correction and atribution:

FM, neither should anyone. I think it’s just a sad case and she should be prosecuted, just like anyone who pulled this kind of stunt. It’s just my belief that the reason behind it was not political.

What these disciplines teach me is to question all that I experience. Politics is as far removed from presenting truth as you can get. All we can hope to do is make decisions based on our personal observations. When a politician such as Obama attempts to hide and distort his past, regardless of his political preferences, it’s becomes necessary to vote for someone who is more transparent.

I hope not. I think Obama’s lead will shrink as undecideds lean for McCain, but he’ll win by 30-40 or so electoral votes and 3-4% pts. I don’t see a landslide, but I think Obama will win. There’s still a week and a half to go, and obviously, I could be wrong.

When it came out – in the “Pulp Fiction” era and I saw it had Johnny Depp in the lead role I avoided it altogether, imagining some hip-hop-90210-slacker teen movie. Later, when I rented it I was quite surprised and enjoyed it.
Great performances all around. Martin Landau as Béla Lugosi was another amazing job.
Long ago I had talked to some old-timers who had worked on such “Poverty Row” films like Wood’s. It was fun to see that era come to life, in the Burton film.
And having worked on a few el-cheapo productions myself, I got an identifying laugh out of scenes such as the one where Wood tells his cast/crew “Run! We don’t have a permit to film here!”.
That was Joan Crawford.
Orson Welles was a fully committed progressive. I’ve never liked any of his work. He couldn’t separate politics from his “art”.

OH my gosh, you should have seen the vitriolic rantings on the liberal blogs at sfgate today. What an irrational bunch they were. Every other post is someone calling someone (another commenter) a “racist liar”.
The days of any civil discourse are over, same as journalism.

Please do not blame the McCain Campaign. It is a long sad part of our history. Well before Emmit Till and through the woman in South Carolina (?) that blamed a black man for highjacking her car and killing her children. We have progressed very far and have good law enforcement officers who take the time to investigate crimes. It used to be that a mere accusation by a white woman would result in black men, yes plural, getting lynched, even though the crime may (yes, allegdedly) have been committed by a single black person.
We have similar problems in the reverse. The incident in New York that brought Rev Sharpton to the wider public eye, and of course the recent Duke lacrosse team. We, the United States public, have reacted with entirely too much emotion in these cases. Thank goodness we now have reasonable and sensible law enforcement. Yes, not entirely, because we remain very human.

Ashley Todd needs a psychiatric evaluation. No remorse=no affect. She is not all there and needs to be protected from herself until she can be properly evaluated.
