Obama in 2001: How to bring about “redistributive change;” Update: Biden decries “mean,” “ugly” questions
Scroll down for updates…Biden whines…

The blogosphere is buzzing about this video posted on YouTube Sunday night. It’s Barack Obama musing about how best to redistribute wealth in America in a Chicago Public Radio interview in 2001.
Not whether, but how: Through the courts or through legislation?
A caller asks The One to explain how he would do “reparative economic work.” Obama gives the legislative route two thumbs up as his preferred method of “breaking free of the constraints” placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution and then burbles about cobbling together the “actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change.”
Joe The Plumber, you barely scratched the surface:
STACLU has transcribed the choice parts of the interview.
If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court. I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order as long as I could pay for it I’d be o.k. But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as its been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the Federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf, and that hasn’t shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was, um, because the civil rights movement became so court focused I think there was a tendancy to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that.
The bottom line from Jeff Goldstein:
In Obama’s America, we’ll finally be able to break free of the “constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution” — and in so doing, achieve “social justice” through “redistributive change.”
Well, then. Fine .
But this is not the America I knew…
Yeah, and don’t you dare ask Obama or Biden about this.
You’ll get blacklisted and bombarded and labeled “combative.”
And who knows what’ll happen to your government records.

Update 12:03pm Eastern 10/27. Joe Biden is licking his wounds over his grilling this weekend by WFTV’s Barbara West.
Sarah Palin’s likeness is swinging from a noose, but it’s we socialism-abhorring conservatives who are “mean” and “ugly.”
JOE BIDEN: “I know this has been a pretty mean campaign. I was on a television station the other day and doing a satellite feed to a major network in Florida. And the anchor quotes Karl Marx and says in a sense, isn’t Barack Obama Karl Marx? You know, I mean, folks, this stuff you’re hearing — this stuff you’re hearing in this campaign, some of it is pretty ugly and some of the innuendo is pretty ugly.”

Wait…are you talking about the 70′s or the Democratic Party?
Are you insane. Even with a flat tax they still pay more. Do you need a math lesson? Is this your problem?
Mark Twain once said, “A statistic is like a woman of the night. Once you get it down you can do most anything you want with it.”
The figure is irrelevant. The very rich are WEALTHY. They have WEALTH not income. The taxes we pay on INCOME do not apply to them as much. It’s a small percentage of their “revenue.”
Now if you tax their wealth you tax their business holdings and guess who pays? The consumer. Ooooops.
Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, et. all know this. Why do they know? THEY ARE WEALTHY!! So Joe can say be patriotic and it does not barely scratch him. Welcome to the old shell game.
A middle-class family making $66,000 a year would see their taxes drop by $319 a year under McCain’s proposal, while a wealthy family making $604,000 a year would see a cut of $45,000. By contrast, Obama offers the biggest breaks for taxpayers at the bottom and in the middle of the income spectrum, while imposing sizeable tax increases on some of the highest earners — those making more than $250,000 annually. Under Obama’s plan, the middle-income family would receive a tax break that is three times larger than McCain’s — $1,042. The wealthy family would see a tax increase of $116,000 a year.
O/T – News alert
Plot to assassinate Obama was foiled.
Ummm, I may not agree with his policies but assassination is a little too extreme… Jeez, lets not accelerate this whole collapse into anarchy, I still have too many frequesnt flier miles to cash in.
How are we supposed to respond to something so stupid as Biden complaining about getting asked tough question when he is running for VP!?
Hey watershed: Here’s a little math lesson:
For 2006:
Top 1% of wage earners pays (>$388,806 annual income) pays 39.89% of taxes;
Top 5% (>$153,542) pays 60.14% (combined) of taxes;
Top 10% (>$108,904) pays 70.79% of taxes
Top 25% (>$64,702) pays 86.27% of taxes
The bottom 50% (<$32,000) of wage earners pay 3% of taxes.
Indeed.
Second question: Which answer below would most accurately describe the bottom 50% cited above as paying 3% of the entire U.S. tax burden:
A) Business owners
B) Entrepreneurs
C) Job creators
D) Union members or 7-11 clerks
WAIT…WAIT…. Watershed,,,, you mean to tell me you actualy believe what he says? REALLY??? REALLY???? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Thanks for the laugh, boy you libs will believe anything won’t you??
Double knits and bellbottoms on guys-disco? Memories fade-hairlines too, perhaps. Or was that the 70s? LEISURE SUITS are out of style? Best go shopping. True Grit came out in 1969-nothing important happened after that.
Wealth not income. Snap goes the trap again!
Besides if you believe the tax proposals of either candidate or ANYTHING they have said on taxes after January 2008 GOOD LUCK.
I firmly suggest you look at their voting records and comments over the last 5 years. THAT is their post election plan. Google Obama Tax cut and see what his comments are prior to 2008. McCain too.
Also, I suggest a good read:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Economy/wm2101.cfm
Here’s the kicker from that analysis, which focuses on job creation vs. redistribution (by the way, if there eventually is no income, there is nothing to redistribute–so that slope is kind of like expecting an increase in gay marriages to contribute to an overall population increase):
From his cold dead hands they will take his boarding pass!
What about us single guys?
When I go out, which is just about every night. The tips that I pay start at 20% and sometimes hit 100%. And if its a good night (rare these days), I will walk in the door planning on paying a $100 tip and then mentally deducting the ammount based on varying levels of service. If I pay the tip on a credit card, I will even cover their taxes for them.
If my taxes are raised then I will go to a straight 10% tip and note they can thank Obama for me.
Strippers take credit cards?
If I were wealthy, and Obama won, most of my wealth would be overseas as fast as I could ship it there. Or I would put it into something you can’t tax.
I resisted a joke that would have got me banned. It was hard, but I did it. whew.
that was the 70s…I LOVED THE 80s…natural fiber, REAGAN!! lots of good things…
met my wife… which is sometimes good, sometimes not so good
That was as tacky as I thought I should go.
But those tax cuts are needed. A reduction in corporate tax and a dedcution for new equiptment can help businesses to hire more people and invest in new equiptment. Aside from the temporary fix of Keynesian government spending, where else do you think growth comes from?
You know, when it comes to ‘redistribution of wealth’, the Republicans really know how to do it.
Take Ted Stevens, for instance. he redistributed all of that cash into his house and hardly anyone even knew it – until now.
The problem with Keynesian spending is eventualy you run out of credit. Then your country goes bankrupt. Neither candidate can keep his promises and keep the country solvent.
Thats a washington dc problem, not just a gop one.
lol, ummm, this is a family show.
I know not of what you speak..

Joe Biden finally say’s something substantial!!!
He was only ordering a latte but the campaign spokesidiot Bill Burton says “it’s progress”
Burton aka Dumba$$ was overheard stating “why in the world did we pick this dipstick for V.P.?”

We need to pay more taxes so the “masses” get their share.
Axis of Taxes = Obama, Pelosi and Reid
We are screwed!
To penalize those that have succeeded is to remove any and all incentive to succeed.
What purpose does it serve to study, gain an education, work hard, sacrifice, save, invest if at some point you will reach an arbitrarily chosen figure where you will be penalized?
What good will it do the doctor who went and suffered and sacrificed through 8+ years of college, if he needs to stop at some point else he becomes penalized?
What about the busiessman? What good is it to him to create marketable goods, expand his business, hire new employees etc., if at some point he is to be penalized?
The cry of “Redistribution of Wealth” and “It is not fair that rich people exist” are the cries of the lazy and the greedy.
What Socialism/Communism or whatever it is that Liberals want to call their financial programs is leaving out entirely is the very thing that makes such programs fail every single place they have ever been attempted.
Human Nature
We as human, will always want more. Sure, in a perfect world with perfect little drones who all think alike, act alike etc., we would all be perfectly happy to make the exact same amount of money for whatever it is we do.
But where will the specialists come from? Where would the physician come from who would go the extra distance to gain the extra knowledge, sepnd the time it takes, work long and hard to come up with a cure or a surgical proceedure for a truly viscious disease? Why would he wish to put in the effort and time if merely to make the same amount as the guy who flips burgers for the clown? Out off the goodness of his heart? Sorry…but we are talking reality.
Or how about the computer programer? Why would he put in the time, money and effort to come up with the latest program, game, computer if he will make nothing more from it? Or worse, have whatever extra he could make from it taken away from him in order for said burger-flipper to have exactly what he has?
Why would anyone even bother to go to college? Why would anyone work hard at their jobs? Why would anyone want to improve anything?
It is the nature of human to want to succeed. It is the nature of Socialism to remove the incentive to succeed.
The founders of this country saw to it that everyone would have the exact same chances to make it in this country…to acquire “The American Dream” as anyone else, if they just worked hard, studied and made the correct choices and decisions.
Not everyone is motivated exactly the same way, thus the reason why you have rich, not so rich and poor.
But the pportunities exist.
There are those, like the guys who created Microsoft, who are more intelligent than others, thus they succeeded. They were able to work in that environment. Because they had th4 smarts, the wherewithal and the drive to succeed is why they did succeed. They should not be punished for it simply because you are jealous of the car they drive, the house they live in, the girls they date. If you don’t like it, then go and get that education, come up with a process or program of your own, market it and sell it.
Those that would punish ess, or whine about it etc., like watershed, Obama and the rest of the lazy Liberals are just that. Dishonest, lazy, greedy little trogs.
I, for one, am proud of those that have succeeded. It is what has made this country as great as it is. It is why people are doing flips and twists to get here. It is why they strap themselves to doors and rubber rafts to cross oceans, run across blazing deserts illegally, etc. So that they can have the chance at that success.
If you ask an immigrant to this country why they come, it is because they have the opportunity to get an education, work hard, and succeed without the fear of having their success taken away from them.
What you and the rest of you lazy, greedy people want to do is take that away from everyone just so you can have what others have earned.
When you remove the incentives and penalize success, you remove people’s desire to succeed, create, and grow.
THAT is why it is wrong to penalize the wealthy. THAT is why Obama and the rest of the Liberal’s tax and financial plans are wrong. THAT is why this country will cease to function, cease to grow, cease to be the greatest country in the history of civilization, should that mentality ever take hold and be put into service.
And if you cannot understand any of that…then maybe you deserve to be in the situation you find yourself in.
RetFireman
Bravo, bravo. Everything I wanted to say, but put much more eloquently than I could.
If the worst thing they can come up with is an ethics violation to remove a person who tazed his own 10 yo child, abused his wife amongst other heinous acts from carrying a badge and a gun….and that people are upset about that (not saying whether it happened or not) then what does that say about those that are complaining?
After all, it is not as if there was tens of thousands in a freezer, or comments made concerning what type of accent you need to go into a convinience store, or hanging out with known terrorists or anything.
It is really difficult to actually get upset about anything the Left brings up as bad when compared with the person whom they are attempting to get elected as President.
“YOU WILL NEVER BE IN THE TOP 1% OF WEALTH. EVER. NOT EVEN CLOSE. IT’S A PIPE DREAM. YOUR WEALTH NOW IS WHAT IS WILL MOSTLY REMAIN.”
1. So what?
2. Wrong. Almost every high-tech firm’s CEO did not start out with inherited wealth; the technology world has always been a meritocracy. NONE of Microsoft’s founders, all bazillionaires now, started out in the top 1%. Tens of thousands of ordinary people got really rich when they bought Microsoft, eBay, Oracle, and a bunch of other tech stocks early, and sold them at the peak. Tens of thousands of wealthy tech people got rich by seeing their companies from start-up to IPO.
NONE of the top sports figures started in the 1%. Except for the sons/daughters of big stars, none of Big Hollywood started out right.
Fact: the US has one of the most dynamic societies in the world. People rise up the ladder, people fall off it.
3. Again: SO WHAT?? Can you explain, watershed, why “the rich” have a moral duty to you to support you, or why YOU have a moral right to the fruits of their labor? Why do you hate rich people so much?
Guys like you need a good swift kick in the ass, all the way down the stairs. Because you are a nothing but a teat-sucking leech, filled with resentment at the idea that others have “more” than you do.
Jesus, you are so pukeworthy.
And what this video shows us all is exactly what type of person he will be placing in the Highest Court.
We see now that he will be selecting only those who will not use the Constitution, but will throw it out entirely as a flawed, wrong thing that isn’t worth the velum it was written on.
He will put on the bench those that will only accept Socialist/Liberal values, not Constitutional ones. He will rewrite the Constitution using juges that will unashamedly legislate from the bench.
Microsoft, Oracle, and the vast majority of the rest all pretty much started out in people’s garages and basements…sometimes not even theirs but their parents.
This Class Envy you and the rest of the Liberals have is really quite sad, and demonstrates how petty and jealous you truly are.
Why do you go to work?
Why would you go to work if you were given everything instead of having to earn it?
(Goping out on a limn here bt, ) Why do you work hard? Why do you try to succeed?
Why would you work hard or try to succeed if you got the same amount regardless?
Channeling James Madison…
What is so special about “redistributive wealth”? It only reinforces people to be underachievers, if that! The welfare state was supposed to be temporary, but has become a way of life. How is that tied to the tenants of the Declaration of Independence–life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?!?!?!? The civil rights movement opened many doors (opportunities) for all minorities. Everyone has access to the American dream, but it requires work and effort. We may not get what we want through hard work and effort, but our efforts are certainly not in vain.
Negative liberties!? Where does he get that? No wonder he doesn’t wear the American flag lapel pin. He has no appreciation of the wisdom of our founding fathers in setting forth the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. He doesn’t appreciate the blood of the American Revolutionaries that was shed for all of us, regardless of race, creed, when we came over or how we came over. Opportunities exist for all of us. THat was the purpose of the civil rights movement. Admittedly, Jim Crow and segregation was wrong. We are all on equal footing now,it’s a matter of who takes advantage of the opportunities. The only person who is keeping you down is yourself; you have no one else to blame.
Seems to me somebody running for President needs to be a bit more grateful for the opportunities he has been given, thanks to those who have gone before him.
ANd furthermore…
Seems to me that instead of the country and the US Constitution have a fundamental flaw, that someone running for President has a fundamentally flawed way of thinking of America and what she stands for!

Obama and everyone of his supporters, in a show of example, should have to calculate 40% of their current annual income and give the portion that has not already been sent to the IRS and send it on. Right now! Don’t wait until you win the election. If there are enough of you out there to win an election for Obama, it will probably be enough to jump start all the programs he wants after he is elected. No waiting, guys. Seize the moment. Show us your checks! You sent Obama a quarter of a billion dollars in campaign donations, so this shouldn’t be so difficult.
Simply, put your money where your mouth is.
If I hire a clerical worker and pay them $10 an hour, should I call up Obama and ask him how much HE thinks I should pay them? Should I just add a couple of bucks per hour?
What if I decide to spread the wealth by paying them a couple more bucks than the going rate and then Obama charges me again in taxes to give them more money? How do I properly measure that?
Ask a liberal?
Careful lad, my son is a stripper.
[Commercial artist]
And some of it (like this) is pretty true.
You mean like, “Barack Obama is about to be the next PotUS”?
You mean ugly like that?
Keep asking all the Obamaoids you meet:
“Given your candidate’s expressed and open disdain for the Constitution as a fundamentally flawed document, how could he possibly take the Presidential oath to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States?
Why would an “I so solemnly swear” not be an act of perjury, an act which would in and of itself be grounds for impeachment?
“Negative liberties!? Where does he get that?”
He’s using that term to mean that the Bill of Rights tells the government what it cannot and must not do. Barack would prefer a positive expression of what government would guarantee people in the form of rights.
You know, like health care, a job, a “living wage”, and all the other liberal “gimmes”.
Trouble is, this idea runs entirely foul of what the Framers intended, and Barack knows it, so he wants to develop a legal theory to support an entirely anti-Constitutional view that paralleles the major tenets of modern European socialism.
IOW the guy’s a near commie.
Worse, once you accept the idea that government GIVES you rights, the extent of your freedom becomes contigent on who wins the next election . You no longer have “god given” right, only those the state deigns to allow you.
Very scary, and entirely antithetical to American principles.
Reparations will be part of redistribution, if Obortion has his way.
Some crazy dude wrote: “YOU WILL NEVER BE IN THE TOP 1% OF WEALTH. EVER. NOT EVEN CLOSE. IT’S A PIPE DREAM. YOUR WEALTH NOW IS WHAT IS WILL MOSTLY REMAIN.”
I started out in the lowest economic 1%. Over twenty-five years, I have been able to rise up to the upper middle-class. I fully intend to be making what the top 10% make.
How?
I am a 3D animator. I have decided to create a direct-to-DVD children’s series that focuses on Conservative AMERICAN Values.
Admittedly, it is a niche market; but, it is one that wants conservative alternatives to the liberals pap that is offered everywhere.
I’ll target home schoolers, private schoolers, Conservatives, and Christian organizations.
The scripting will present characters as self-reliant, responsible, generous, patriotic, and faithful.
THAT is how I will keep moving forward toward my monetary goals, and THAT in some small measure may help to counteract the socialist-liberal indoctrination that is sure to continue.
So, Obama can stuff his dreams of world domination and wealth theft. In time, I plan to buy and sell twerps like him.
Question:
What government agency is ultimately responsible for verifying that Mr. Obama meets all regulatory requirements for potential presidency?
Specifically, that he is indeed a natural born citizen with an official birth certificate.
But you couldn’t do it if others didn’t pay taxes to build roads and schools and the internet….. oh and buy your product!
And this from the Obama talking heads.
“The Obama campaign immediately pushed
back, arguing that the Right is deliberately misinterpreting a narrow legal argument Obama was making about decades-old court cases.
“This is a fake news controversy drummed up by the all too common alliance of Fox News, the Drudge Report and John McCain,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.
“In this seven year old interview, Senator Obama did not say that the courts should get into the business of redistributing wealth at all.”
And Obama gets another pass from the Media on this statement. But then again if you ask hard question you get black listed by the Obama camp.
I was thinking about my conversation here earlier today with Watershed and something bothered me. Watershed – do you really believe what you said about how people are toadies of the upper class and they can never get out of the middle bracket bracket they are in? I want to offer you some hope and say that it can be done. My husband and I have suffered several significant setbacks in our business lives and suceeded in spite of them. I felt bad today when I reread your post because your view is so cynical and sad. You have bought the “system is against us” line and its not always true.
Ok, so now that I have outed myself as a member of the top 1% club, which I didn’t want to do except for possibly helping Watershed to see a different picture, I want to say that most of the business talent is my husband’s.
For us, its all God’s property anyway. As much as the stuff is nice, its only temporary. I know a family, their company is a household name and they live to give it all away. They are my heroes. I may never have the horsepower that they have, but God willing, I hope I can do what they do in my own little corner of the world.
So please Watershed, dont buy that kind of political cynicism, its not always true and probably not healthy either.
I want to point out it is illegal to possess what Bill Burton is smoking here.
This explanation is reminiscent of Monty Python’s dead parrot sketch.
Laughable!
During the Bush Administration 11 million people disappeared from the Middle Class. Do you know where they went? They moved UP and OUT of the Middle Class.
Obama mentions the 11 million, but omits telling you their lives got better. I myself am SO MUCH better off than I was in 2001. Watershed is not self-taught. He’s indoctrinated.
I poionted out facts to him that he just went into denial over, never disputed, and just kept going. Incredible to observe.
Michelle,
Please, please, please do a post about the following blog at Fox News, and the comments from the “Unhinged” left advocating “re-education camps” and “Hate Crimes” for us when (they think) Obama wins:
