Obama in 2001: How to bring about “redistributive change;” Update: Biden decries “mean,” “ugly” questions

Scroll down for updates…Biden whines…

The blogosphere is buzzing about this video posted on YouTube Sunday night. It’s Barack Obama musing about how best to redistribute wealth in America in a Chicago Public Radio interview in 2001.

Not whether, but how: Through the courts or through legislation?

A caller asks The One to explain how he would do “reparative economic work.” Obama gives the legislative route two thumbs up as his preferred method of “breaking free of the constraints” placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution and then burbles about cobbling together the “actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change.”

Joe The Plumber, you barely scratched the surface:

STACLU has transcribed the choice parts of the interview.

If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court. I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order as long as I could pay for it I’d be o.k. But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as its been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the Federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf, and that hasn’t shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was, um, because the civil rights movement became so court focused I think there was a tendancy to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that.

The bottom line from Jeff Goldstein:

In Obama’s America, we’ll finally be able to break free of the “constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution” — and in so doing, achieve “social justice” through “redistributive change.”

Well, then. Fine .

But this is not the America I knew…

Yeah, and don’t you dare ask Obama or Biden about this.

You’ll get blacklisted and bombarded and labeled “combative.”

And who knows what’ll happen to your government records.

Update 12:03pm Eastern 10/27. Joe Biden is licking his wounds over his grilling this weekend by WFTV’s Barbara West.

Sarah Palin’s likeness is swinging from a noose, but it’s we socialism-abhorring conservatives who are “mean” and “ugly.”

JOE BIDEN: “I know this has been a pretty mean campaign. I was on a television station the other day and doing a satellite feed to a major network in Florida. And the anchor quotes Karl Marx and says in a sense, isn’t Barack Obama Karl Marx? You know, I mean, folks, this stuff you’re hearing — this stuff you’re hearing in this campaign, some of it is pretty ugly and some of the innuendo is pretty ugly.”

Just more proof of the lies that the one has been spreading (along with the wealth). Here is an email a good friend of mine sent me who is running for Congress against Baghdad Jim McDermott:

Obama, of course, is dishonestly presenting his views on such key issues as taxation and Afghanistan. If he put forward his true views (withdrawal of troops leading to defeat in Afghanistan, plus higher taxes and expanded government at home), McCain would win by a solid margin. Only by lying about his tax policy (reduced taxes for 95% of Americans) combined with lying about his foreign policy (increase of troops and stronger effort against terrorism in Afghanistan) does Obama have a chance of fooling some people and increasing his vote totals. The question over the final ten days is: who will win the debate in the public mind? Will the liars succeed, or will truth win out?

In the final ten days of the election, the Obama-Biden campaign is currently pursuing three key tactics: (1) pretend to favor lowering taxes, (2) pretend to favor fighting more aggressively against terrorism in Afghanistan, and (3) discourage Republicans and conservaties from challenging Obama on these two substantive issues. There is not a lot of time left, so our priority has to be on the issues, and we cannot let ourselves be distracted by counter-productive tactics.

In the last ten days, we need to break through the lies. Obama wouldn’t be pretending to favor lower taxes and more troops to Afghanistan if those were not popular views among the American people. Of course, there is already a presidential ticket that honestly favors lower taxes, and honestly favors victory in Afghanistan and Iraq – the McCain-Palin ticket. No matter how much we are pressured or tempted to give up, we must not give up. No matter how much we are pressured or tempted to be diverted into counterproductive tactics, we must not do so – that would be the same as giving up.

Uh, duh! The idea of the Constitution being a restraint on government power was the INTENDED PURPOSE! Only a few years earlier the American States had a “little confrontation” we now call the American Revolution to dissolve their association with a VERY INTRUSIVE government known as the British Monarchy.

Upon winning said Revolution the United States created the Articles of Confederation which was PURPOSELY DESIGNED to create a WEAK central government.

However, that didn’t work. The States learned that despite their abhorance to Monarchy, a national government still needs some real authority to do stuff. Therefore, it was necessary to rid themselves of the Articles and form a new Government. Still, that lingering fear AGAINST an instrusive governemtn was still there, so they made great pains to ensure that despite the increase power they were giving government, it was still not so intrusive. Government power separated into three distinct branches. Two houses of legistlature. Checks and balances between the branches.

    What a concept.

Only a few years earlier the American States had a “little confrontation” we now call the American Revolution to dissolve their association with a VERY INTRUSIVE government known as the British Monarchy.

Our country’s founding Revolution exalted the ideals of equality, justice, and democracy, of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Marxists have long hailed its progressive significance, while recognizing its historical limitations, chief of which was the failure to abolish slavery. The Communist Party today upholds the continuing struggle to realize these ideals. The revolutionary democratic traditions of the United States call for radical change when injustice, inequality, and exploitation become unbearably oppressive. This legacy gives us, the working class and its allies, the right and responsibility to build a new society. We advocate an expanded Bill of Rights to guarantee religious, political, and individual freedoms, but also freedom from poverty, hunger, joblessness, and racism.

The end of an empire is messy at best…and this one is ending like all the rest.” -Randy Newman, as quoted on the eve of 9/11/2008 by Bill Ayers on his blog

But my journey is part of a larger journey - one shared by all who’ve ever sought to apply the values of their faith to our society. It’s a journey that takes us back to our nation’s founding, when none other than a UCC church inspired the Boston Tea Party and helped bring an Empire to its knees.

It’s the Republicans in Washington that enabled the socialist movement that’s now happening in this country. The Republicans never got rid of Great Society. They never got rid of the New Deal. They picked liberal SCOTUS justices “scumbag” Souter, Stevens and “the world according to” Kennedy because they didn’t want to make waves.

When the Republicans finally got the majority of the Congress and won Presidency, they chose to act like Democrats. They spent money like they were drunken sailors and they let the liberals in Congress set the agenda with people like Ted Kennedy. No Child Left Behind, Amnesty for Illegals and so on.

Government Agencies like the EPA, CIA and State Department running wild as though they are the liberal version of the 4th branch. They never reined them in and now the EPA treats CO2 as if it were a pollutant. Now Bush, Gringrich and McCain buying into the man made Global Warming B.S. which is nothing but a smokescreen, a disguise by the left to squeeze out more money from the middle-class.

The State Department is full of shadow presidents leaking out all kinds of vital secret information putting our troops and country at risk just to make the President look bad.

People in the CIA ala Valerie Plame setting their own missions with political bias in mind.

Why aren’t the men and women that protect our country protected by Hate Crime law? Why were the libs able to get away with the insanely corrupted ACORN for so long? Why have they been afraid to investigate where Jesse Jackson gets his money from? How come we have billions of barrels of oil and trillion barrels of natural gas that hasn’t been drilled?

The Republicans were too busy walking on eggshells and too stupid to understand whatever they done they left would hate them for it regardless.
Sometimes I wonder what this country would have been like if the Republicans actually acted like Republicans.

Now days the Republicans with the help of the Democrats and encouragement of President George Bush delivered what the Democrats and George Soros have been trying to do for years. They brought us SOCIALISM!

Obama sounds to me here like he is expressing the wish that the Supreme Court would impose socialism on America, although he is “not optimistic” that this will happen. it is his obvious desire.

However, as POTUS, with a Democrat congress & senate he would now be in an excellent position to “spread the wealth” just as he told Joe the Plumber he wanted to do — and now, just as this 4-minute audio file expresses at considerable length!

THIS SOUND FILE, if deployed properly by the non-socialists in this election, WILL DAMAGE OBAMA with the middle class on the economy.

I cannot stress strongly enough how BIG this audio file is. McCain — PLEASE for the love of God DON’T BLOW IT on this one.

He was referring specifically to remedies in the civil rights movement. In other words, the rights that blacks should have had from the time this country was founded were finally given to blacks. But there were no damages attached to the granting of those rights. Think of it this way, you enter into a contract with someone and they violate the terms of that contract. Because of the other party’s violation, you lose a million dollars in business. You sue, and win, and the court says: OK you won, the other party was at fault but we are not going to award you any damages. What kind of victory is that? For blacks who for hundreds of years got screwed out of the opportunity to go to school, get educated, make money, buy property, own businesses, send their kids to school, pass on the wealth and so forth (all the things that whites had an opportunity to do) the victories were great even though they were fights just to gain their rights granted to them by God. He was just saying that along with those rights that were finally accorded to them, there should have been some money damages awarded somehow.

Black Americans can have all these opportunities now, if they’re willing to work for it. No one should be given something for nothing. When I was in college (this was in the 90s, mind you) a high percentage of the African American students in my school were able to go for almost nothing because of various Massachusetts state programs which were available to them. Over 80% of them flunked out the first year. I can’t speak for why exactly they failed their first year, but I’ll bet if they were footing their own bill for school (or at least a good chunk of it), they may have put in more effort to succeed.

Exactly. Not to mention either way you look at this Obama is still talking about wealth redistribution. Whether he is talking in general Socialistic terms or whether he is talking in reparations terms it is still taking money earned from one person and giving it to someone else.

This will lead to the loss of productivity as those who work their butts off to get ahead will no longer have any incentive to do so. This has been proven in the US before during the early years prior to the Constitution. Here is a link to some information reagarding the failed experiment of trying to spread the wealth.

Let us grant the collectivist “fad” canard that Lincoln didn’t oppose slavery (which is patently false, if you’ve ever read the debates he had with his opponent during the election).

Even granting this handicap, one can not argue against the fact that the blood of millions were paid to free mankind from slavery in the U.S. That should be reparation enough.

If money was not paid to those newly granted their freedom, it is something that can never be rectified now. They are all dead, and their children are dead, and their grandchildren are dead. Nowhere is there to be found a slave.

Modern clamorings for money is nothing but a sickening a lust for power over innocents.

Riiighhhhhtttt. And there was no such thing as slavery in any other culture or race (or today for that matter). And none of us had ancestors that came to America with nothing more than the clothes on their back, never owned a slave and took a hundred years to eek their way out of the ghettos either.

In this video, ormer FBI informant Larry Grathwohl, who infiltrated the Weather Underground and helped prevent several bombing attacks by the group, describes a Weather Underground meeting:

I brought up the subject of what’s going to happen after we take over the government. You know, “we” become responsible then for administrating, you know, 250 million people. And there was no answer. No one had given any thought to economics, how you are going to clothe and feed these people?

The only thing that I could get was that they expected the Cubans and the North Vietnamese and the Chinese and the Russians would all want to occupy different portions of the United States. They also believed that their immediate responsibility would be to protect against what they called “the counter-revolution.”

… I asked, “well what is going to happen to those people we can’t reeducate, that are diehard capitalists?” and the reply was that they’d have to be eliminated.

And when I pursued this further, they estimated they would have to eliminate 25 million people in these reeducation centers.

And when I say “eliminate,” I mean “kill.”

    Twenty-five million people.

I want you to imagine sitting in a room with 25 people, most of which have graduate degrees, from Columbia and other well-known educational centers, and hear them figuring out the logistics for the elimination of 25 million people.

    And they were dead serious.

The man who babysat Obama’s kids. The man whose books Obama glowingly reviewed. The man who may have ghost-written Obama’s books.

And we wonder why government records were searched in order to destroy Joe The Plumber?

    Actually there were several debates.

Believe it or not, journalists back then saw their jobs as reporting facts. As a result, most learned shorthand (of a sort) that would allow them to record such things.

In fact because of the telegraph the entire transcript of the debates could be read the next day after the debate in all of the papers.

Something that we, in our modernity, are hard pressed to find in any paper… we read about the debates, but never read the true blue damned words.

This is partly why politicians were so well spoken and eloquent then. Their words were going to be printed and they knew it.

Now politicians stammer and moan and mummer, seeking out that one sentence that will be replayed to their advantage in an infinite loop on television and youtube.
