“The allure of a charismatic demagogue”

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 26, 2008 10:11 AM

Blinded by the glow…

Must-read weekend meditation: Mark Levin ponders “the Obama temptation” and asks, “Is the allure of a charismatic demagogue so strong that the usually sober American people are willing to risk an Obama presidency?”

One of the biggest puzzles to me is why so many have fallen for the notion that the bland cipher Obama is “charismatic.”

But I guess if you have enough in-the-tank media propagandists photoshopping halos around your head, people start to believe it.

Why is that a puzzle when you have to look no farther than his running mate’s comment? “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

Levin’s piece is very good, worthy of Steyn or Sowell (who have both BTW issued back to back dire warnings on Obama, so you can take it to the government bank.) The American people, with few exceptions, appear to have given up. Huge segments of the population have gone race simple, believing the Magic Numinous “O” can lower the oceans, bring world peace, and deliver tax cuts while drafting spending plans that will break the economy. They are like infants, endlessly crying for the moon. All the wisdom of being careful about what you wish for has been flushed from their brains.

So they will get the government they deserve and lose the Republic they are no longer worthy of. If I did not have to live among them and suffer the consequences as well, I could hardly bring myself to care.

Word is recruitment is down due to potential recruits wanting to wait to see who is President and a lot of the toops I talk to here in Iraq say if Obam is elected they wont reenlist. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Obama youth vote helps Obama to get elected only to end up in a mandatory draft due to military personnel shortages?

O/T but I want to sprinkle this everywhere especially in light of Biden’s interview with the FL reporter.

Important distinction that NEEDS to be made over and over again between now and Nov. 4.

When Obama talks about reducing taxes for 95% of working Americans he is only talking about income taxes. He is not talking about payroll taxes which is where the funding for new programs will come from.

The nationalized health care plan the Dems are salivating about is a 7% payroll tax, the new retirement plan to replace our 401k’s is a 5% payroll tax, and the wage insurance is a 1% payroll tax for a total new tax burden of 13%. Add that to the current 6% Social Security payroll tax and the 1% (or more) Medicare payroll tax and we’re looking at a payroll tax burden in excess of 20% which is not subject to the deductions the income tax is.

No one is exempt from payroll taxes so Obama is simply lying.

There won’t be any Obama youth vote — in the entire modern history of politics in ths country the young voter has never turned out —- recall the “enormous groundswell” of youth vote for Gore and Kerry — didn’t turn out. I think Rasmussen reported that the youth vote in early voting is running at the historical rate, no groundswell this time either.

And the troops aren’t going to have to think about re-upping, the Dems are going decimate the military anyway — they need the money to buy votes for 2012.

Boomer this is the second attempt so far by the Libs to throw out the military vote (at least that I know of). The first was in my home state of WA. The Governor (who is in a tough reelection contest) filed a fricilous lawsuit to try to have any ballot that had the word GOP listed for her opponent marked as invalid. She did this after the ballots had been mailed to the troops serving abroad (which the National Guard unit from WA is here in Iraq now). They figured it would have disenfrachised at least 1600 military votes.

Luckily a judge saw it for what it was and tossed the suit out.

I also remember a couple of other cases were GIs were being charged in a Federal Court for an incident that occurred in Iraq. Sorry don’t have the links handy, but when a Federal Court jumps into the arena reserved for Military Justice as written in Uniform Code of Military Justice and Manual for Courts Martial the barn door is wide open to prosecute GIs for doing their duty.

I totally agree on the cult of personality surrounding Obama. His stump speeches are the worst kind of populist pandering. The sources of his so-called “charm” are his lies about tax-cuts and his pandering to some ill-defined, yet all inclusive thing called the middle class, of which most people think they are members.

He is promising everything to everyone, vilifying anyone who has had business success, using the greedy few who have gamed the system (usually with government assistance) to tell us how we are being victimized.

He has hidden his inexperience behind exultant rhetoric. You need healthcare, he is the one. You need education, he is the one. A job, he is the one. Your enironmental anguish assuaged, he is the one. Peace at any price, he is the one. And he promises all of this with a straight face, countering all arguments to his policy proposals that they must be correct simply because they are different from George Bush’s.

Is it any wonder at all that the stressed out American voter, who thinks a market downturn is a permanent destruction of all of their savings, who feels high interest rates are unfair, who believes they are entitled to unlimited access to healthcare without incurring any financial impact, who doesn’t want to do hardscrabble work because the government should provide support so that they can continue to pursue their prior levels of leisure, who thinks that government is omnipotent and therefore only requires someone with the wisdom to wield such power for the improvement of the world, is likely to vote for Obama?

We should be disgusted with the American voter (ourselves), but it isn’t like we’re provided with many choices. John McCain is a clumsy old version of Obama light. The best that can be said for him is that there would be a slight possibility that he would fight with a Dem controlled congress. But as we’ve seen, he’ll cave in the name of cooperation and bipartisanship (yecch).

He makes ridiculous statements about global warming…proudly. He has no notion of what to do about illegal immigration. His healthcare plan is nearly as stupid as Obama’s (I’m not a fan of dealing with taxes on my premiums and then having to use a credit when I do my taxes.)

But the American voter doesn’t care about that. McCain’s biggest sin is that he is old. He has a doughy face, old guy teeth that make a creepy grin. He seems grumpy and mean. He has that irritating aspirated “s” when he speaks. He doesn’t sound like a country preacher when he tries to raise his tepid rhetoric.

We don’t want Grandpa, and his nurse with the upper midwest nasal twang, in the White House. We want the cool black guy with the tight butt and our crazy uncle from Scranton.

    We’re frigging idiots.

The next few years should smack us all back to reality. That is if our capitalist economy and representative democracy survives.

I can’t help but think the same euphemism applies to the nation’s collective psychology in this election: Voters are seriously contemplating committing a four year mistake, by selecting Obama, as a viable solution to a temporary economic problem.

Putting Obama, Pelosi and Reid in charge of our economy and government would mean the end of this nation as we have known and know it.

America, we’ve been through tough economies before and emerged stronger than before we entered each of them because we maintained our commitment to free-market enterprise. There’s no reason we won’t emerge from this mess stronger than before we entered it – as long as we do not elect Obama and allow his socialist programs to become law.

Under the direction of an Obama-Pelosi-Reid presidency, this nation will set out on a path of socialism that will forever eliminate privatization and free-market self-determination – a path that a hundred years of Republican majorities could not undo!

President McCain and VP Palin are the best bulwark we have against the coming tide of socialism emanating from the House Democrats.

It’s possible to survive the onslaught, but these are different times. While it is useful to understand history, I am not one who holds that it repeats. There may be patterns, yes… but.

At no point in history has technology been so powerful. If placed in the hands of a government that holds no regard for freedom, there may be no escape, no means to reverse its authoritarian grip upon a population.

I know the history. The League of Nations was just slightly less of a joke than the UN — anti-Americanism hadn’t been invented yet. Wilson is in large part responsible for the heinous settlement of WW I that set the stage for WW II. Wilson was a socialist who worked very hard to do many of the same things that Obama, and all socialists, are trying to bring about. Wilson, like Obama believed that the elites should govern and the rest of us should stay in our place. And Wilson had jackbooted thugs too.
