“The allure of a charismatic demagogue”

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 26, 2008 10:11 AM

Blinded by the glow…

Must-read weekend meditation: Mark Levin ponders “the Obama temptation” and asks, “Is the allure of a charismatic demagogue so strong that the usually sober American people are willing to risk an Obama presidency?”

One of the biggest puzzles to me is why so many have fallen for the notion that the bland cipher Obama is “charismatic.”

But I guess if you have enough in-the-tank media propagandists photoshopping halos around your head, people start to believe it.

We were talking about income taxes, not business taxes. She pays business taxes on very little because of the expenses. And yes, the business pays for her car, apartment and all those expenses because the business owns them and she uses them. It’s all legal because of the tax codes. Maybe you need a better accountant for your business. She does pay her employees but she doesn’t pay herself. The point was that SHE doesn’t pay income or SS on her income because she doesn’t need an income. It is as if she doesn’t work at all. Is thinking out of the box too difficult?

Off topic a bit…I just saw on TV a polling place in Chicago. There were lines out the door, and people had been waiting for hours. I would estimate that 99% of those in line were black. Obama has been telling his disciples to vote early to make sure their votes count. They are doing it, big time.

Of course it’s a race preference vote, largely on the black side! Imagine the polls if black Americans were as politically diversified as white America instead of thinking as a color club.

I WISH people wouldn’t put their hopes on a Conservative term after Obama “fixing” his damage. The Dems are going to seal in concrete social programs that would be poison for any Republican to touch. “Recovery” to the right isn’t going to happen. Pendulum swings die eventually, and it’ll left tilting when it finally rests, when we’re saddled with mega social programs that NO administration after Obama will ever get rid of (i.e FDR and SS).

    Reasons to vote Obama:

I want to be part of history!

I don’t want to feel like a bigot.

    President McCain wrecked the economy!

Ego is like a balloon, it can pop pretty easily.

Obama has been able to market his balloon to the populace. When the first problem shows up and he is not able to solve it to the expectations of his followers, they will turn on him.

The expectations are too high. He’s promised utopia.

The creepy crawlies will start coming out of the closet within weeks of his election (if he is elected).

Keeping the creepy crawlies in the closet will become a nightmare. It will be like the carnival game “Bop a Mole.”

If he is truly the Messiah, then he needs to prove it by going to the emergency room of a hospital to cure the ill or a funeral home to raise the dead.

He’s brought in millions, but it is not enough. He can never bring in enough money to solve everyone’s problems.

And that’s where the problem in western PA is, the people expect someone else to take care of them. This is why he continues to get voted in. They are looking for Nirvana. Nirvana, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy do not exist.

    2. Electing Obama will show those Wascally Wepublicans!

    3. The French will like and respect us again, just like they did before Bush.

    4. We’ll finally have a president that can do a proper thug thizzle.

    5. He’ll lower the oceans and temperatures to their proper, historical level.

    6. Democrat White House scandals are so much more interesting than Republican scandals.

    7. We will all actually enjoy paying taxes as they will now be an investment in the future.

    8. What this country needs to lead it is a community organizer trained in Chicago politcs.

    9. Sending children off to government care 2 years earlier will finally make public schools a success.

I just watched the panel on Fox News Sunday. I wanted to throw something through the TV screen!! What were you thinking??? The panel discussion was a POST MORTEM on the McCain campaign. I wasn’t aware he had lost. I thought there was over a week left before the votes would be counted. Yet, here you were…doing a “what went wrong with this loser campaign” discussion. I am so angry with you! I have not counted out McCain. There is still a chance. But what you did was totally irresponsible, making people think it was all over but the crying. Then, at the end…Brit Hume saying the Obama campaign had to “warm your heart” made me sick. It doesn’t warm my heart to think that a corrupt, terrorist-loving, anti-semite, black liberation, socialist might become the leader of the free world. At least it is free now…just wait until Obama and his Chicago thugs get power. Add that to a Pelosi and Reed Congress. Might as well move to Venezuela.

    Absolutely correct, FilmLadd.

I always cringe when I hear people make the argument that from Carter we got Reagan, so if Obama is elected, we’ve got a shot at getting RR redux in 2012. I’ve even heard “conservatives” say they’re voting for Obama so that it can happen.

Not necessarily. Today, there are a lot more Americans who think like Obama than there were people who thought like Carter in the late 70’s and a HUGE increase compared with people who thought like Wilson in 1920. People would do anything to avoid the shame of taking welfare in the early 20th century. Even during Carter’s term, the Great Society was in its first generation. We now have millions of peope who have grown up watching their grandparents and parents get a handout and believe there is a free lunch. And Obama is just the guy to give them the latest and greatest version. There is absolutely no concept of shame among a large segment of the population … about anything.

I am not optimistic that if Obama is elected that the next RR is just around the corner. Nor that the “right wing conspiracy” (my, how I wish it really was vast!) will ever be able to regain control of the political debate once Obama, Reid, and Pelosi get a chance to spend 4 years ripping the foundations of this once great country from underneath us.

There are legitimate things to be afraid of. If you have my view of the world there many logical, legitimate, and may I add PRUDENT reasons to be afraid of Barack Obama.

If people become afraid of him for legtimate, logical, and prudent reasons, there is nothing dishonorable or dishonest with that. They believe he will be powerful enough to remake the American political landscape with even more ease than Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

The prospect of an electoral rout has unleashed a bitter bout of recriminations both within the McCain campaign and the wider conservative movement, over who is to blame and what should be done to salvage the party’s future.

Mr McCain is now facing calls for him to sacrifice his own dwindling White House hopes and focus on saving vulnerable Republican Senate seats which are up for grabs on the same day.

I think there is a big difference between being quote, unquote, “afraid” of someones political policies, and it can be a healthy thing, one that steers debate and political excitement.

Using fear tactics to win an election, calling someone Arab, terrorist, Muslim, kill him, socialist, etc, is a far different thing. There are posters on this board who even have the nerve to cry of “concentration camps” if Obama wins, of course not realizing the anti semeticism of such absurdity. There’s nothing logical or prudent about that, wouldn’t you agree?

This is the second time on this thread that you’ve written something as though it is cast in concrete, but that hasn’t actually happened yet. I know you can’t predict the future. If you could, you’d be the wealthiest person on earth and certainly wouldn’t be hanging out commenting on this blog.

This time around you claim you’ll be getting a tax cut under Obama. How do you know? Because he told you yesterday what his tax plan is going to be in 2009? I remember Bill Clinton doing exactly the same thing. He promised big tax cuts in 1992, then once he was in office in 1993, he came back and said it wasn’t going to happen after all. The government couldn’t afford it! In fact, he presided over one of the largest tax increases in history that year.

Obama has backtracked on many of his statements since he started running for POTUS. Why are you so sure he won’t backtrack on this one too? Again, I stipulate you have no ability to foretell the future.

And even if you do get a tax cut, so what? You’ll get it for a year and then see taxes increase far in excess of the decrease you got, so how are you ahead? What don’t you get about “spreading the wealth around?” That’s code for Obama saying “I’m the king and you’re a POS.”

But, if I should just assume he is lying, why not then assume everything every candidate is saying is a lie? And dont vote at all? Pretty anarchic view.

Most of us here would proudly vote for any candidate that truely loves this nation and believes in the principles of our founding fathers. The color of their skin would make no difference as long as the candidate believed that we are each responsible for our own successes and failures. That it is NOT the role of government to penalize those who succeed by rewarding the weak. They would support a candidate that understands the principle that there are consequences for bad judgement. That honesty and hard work is how we get ahead and that Government only puts barriers in front of achievers when it wrongly tries to help slackers.

AS to your implication that MM’s site is full of racists, it has been my view that those who accuse others usually are covering up their own failings.

Okay we have some common ground here. However, I would encourage you to differntiate betwen people and campaigns. Here is what you wrote that promoted my response:

If McCain wins, yes, I will say that his campaign of divisivness and fear worked on the voting public…,

    You wrote in #239:

Using fear tactics to win an election, calling someone Arab, terrorist, Muslim, kill him, socialist, etc, is a far different thing. There are posters on this board who even have the nerve to cry of “concentration camps” if Obama wins,

My points are no one in the McCain campaign have said or even implied Obama is an Arab, a Muslim, a terroist or he should be killed. Have McCain supporters said these things? Yes. Is it irresponsible? Yes. Inexcusable and no better than many things said about McCain or Palin from the other side.

Some of the posts on this sight about “concentration camps,” “getting my guns,” etc. etc. are over the top IMO.

Among things that I am “afraid” of are Obama’s shared values with terrorists. Bill Ayers is a decades old enemy of mine. Obama shares the same values as his pastor. He displays all of the behaviors of a traditional Chicago politician. Obama is demonstrably a socialist. While Obama knows the label is a loser to the electorate, he is unapologetic in his views, which are by their formal definition socialist. He’s very honest and open about them.

Every idea Obama has proposed economically, politically and in foreign policy is not new. A review of history will reveal to you they have all been tried and all have failed and in some cases failed miserably. He’s not a leader. He has a radical view of people like me and human life. He is unable to take criticism without a vindictive response, which is indicative of immaturity and intolerance. He takes everything personally; not good for a leader.

I am not afraid of him at all. I am afraid of where he could take this country.

Their voting record and past statements is the key to heir post election behavior. Reason #35 why I have nothing in common with Obama.

No tax cut from Obama. No secure border from McCain. No support of the troops from Obama. No drilling from McCain. That’s reality.

The McCain campign absolutely has implied that Obama is a terrorist. Even flat out said that he “palled around with” them. That is inexcusable, imo, and has nothing to do in any way with the real issues that the two campaigns could be discussing. The economy, the war, etc. Intead, no, it’s Ayers and terrorist terrorist terrorist. The implications of such feed hate. hate I can read all around me on this site (Lawn jockey, WHITE house, etc. It’s atrocious.)

Like McCain finally said, two months too late, “he’s a decent family man citizen who I happen to have disagreements with.” Why couldnt the whole campaign be from that place?

Also please give me any example of similar actions/words/tactics in the Obama campaign. Keating 5? come on.

    Watershed #260,

The McCain campaign has said Obama has palled around with Bill Ayers, who is by Ayer’s on words an unrepentant terrorist. Is Obama a terrorist? No, but he not only tolerates one he has workes actively with one on programs desgined to indoctinate children with what I feel are radical socialist ideals. He has endorsed Ayers book filled with radical, anti-American ideas. OBAMA DOES NOT DENY THAT.

Examples of Obama spreading fear? Try this one:

ANNOUNCER: John McCain’s health care plan. First we learned he’s going to tax health care benefits to pay for part of it. Now the Wall Street Journal reports John McCain would pay for the rest of his health care plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, $882 billion for Medicare alone, requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both. John McCain, taxing health benefits, cutting Medicare. We can’t afford John McCain.

OBAMA: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message. Note: Even David Shuster of NBC said this ad was totally false. The 30 year old FEAR tactic of Republicans doing evil of old people.

Why do I object strongly to Obama and call him a socialist? I give you Obama’s own words. Go to this Newsbusters link and listen to their link of Obama in 1995. If you agree with his views, that is your choice.

I do not and never will.

Watershed, today’s your lucky day!!! I’m here to enhance your D minus public education in history.

Concentration camps were for ANYONE that the Nazi government found distasteful regardless if they were subversive or not. Not only Jews but concentration camps held:
    Social Democrats
    Trade Unionists
    liberals
    Communists
    Freemasons
    anarchists
    “habitual criminals”
    Foreign Forced Laborers
    emigrants

Obama Discussed Redistribution of Wealth on February 27, 2001:

    Obama Bombshell Audio Uncovered.
He wants to Radically Reinterpret the Constitution to Redistribute Wealth!!
In a 2001 Chicago Public Radio Interview
Obama is discussing the best way to bring about a Redistribution of Wealth!!!
This Video Exposes the radical underneath the rhetoric!!!

Some excerpts of Barack Obama’s comments (emphasis mine):

If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossed peoples. So that I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it I would be OK.

But the Supreme court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.

And to that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it has been interpreted…that generally the Constitution as a charter of negative liberties says what the states can’t do to you or what the federal government can’t do to you, but it doesn’t say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf.

And that hasn’t shifted. And one of the I think the tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and the activities on the ground that are able to put together the coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change. And in some ways we still suffer from that.

He goes on to explain, in a response to a caller’s question, how redistibution of wealth is better accomplished through the legislative branch than the judicial branch. In Barack’s mind, there is no question that redistribution of wealth is what must be done, even if it means changing or reinterpreting the Constitution! It’s not a question of if it should be done, but rather how best to do it!

The YouTube video is a 4:17 edit of the original 52:59 program found on this page.
