Good riddance, Ted Stevens
The GOP King of Pork has been found guilty on seven felony counts for making false statements in relation to his corruption probe.
Goodbye and good riddance.
As for the Senate seat left vacant and ripe for Democrat picking, I’m with Ed Morrissey:
…the Republicans deserve to lose it for not doing a better job of defeating Stevens in the primary.
May the GOP live and learn from this mess.

Which reminds me. What’s goin on with William Jefferson these days?
If I was still a member of the republican party I would care. But THEY left me so I don’t care anymore.
Sadly we will pay for it as a nation.
Here’s yet another reason why we need the 17th amendment eliminated immediately and return the framework of the federal government back to the way it was created by the founders in the Constitution.
Alaska does it right again–kind of like Texas justice. Stevens will look good in an orange jump suit doing a perp walk.
Can we cater Louisiana Congressman William Jeffersons’s case to Alaska? Justice would be served by a change of venue.
John Bibb
#1 still in congress, why? Did you honestly think a dnc congress would kick out a dnc congressman?
hardly. Barney frank could molest the entire boys section of the local catholic church on the floor of congress and not be kicked out, so whats a feww dollar bills in the freezer???
Maybe he can share a cell with that other Republitard Duke Cunningham! The can comfort each other on the long lonely nights.
The obligatory ‘Bad rubbish’ comment
The case took place in DC.
Yeah, great news… If Obama gets in that is a filibuster proof majority. But hey… The party will be “purified” alright. Just totally powerless.
What is bad is that with the press in the tank for the dems, they will not even try to investigate ANY dems for at least 2 years.
Jefferson can do no wrong….he is a democrat, I would say black democrat but I don’t want to point out color for fear of being branded RACIST.
When I 1st registered to vote in 93 to vote against clinton I was republican but have changed since then to independent after those representing me had developed back problems. Spaghettitus, I believe is the correct term for their back disease.
Ted Stevens is the exact symbol of what is wrong with the GOP. An elitist who abandoned the party and his beliefs just to stay in office for the perks it gave.
Personally, I hope he wins re-election. Then when he’s sentanced and is forced to resign, Gov. Palin or the Lt. Gov will appoint a new senator and butt-wipe Stevens will still be in jail.
It’s gonna be a little sad and pathetic to see an 84 year old guy head to prison. I really just feel sorry for his family. I’ll never understand the things people do and give up for $$$.
Thank you, Jesus!
I am very serious when I say that I want and pray for:
All corruption, regardless of party, to be exposed, prosecuted, convicted, and prevented.
We got a conviction on a Republican.
Now, will we even get a prosecution on the Democrat law students who conspired to help steal the state of Ohio for Obama?
And that ladies and gentlemen is the sentiment of the country. You wonder why Obama is going to win? We deserve it. Why should you limit it to Alaska?
Republicans get convicted, deomcrats get a pass. You should know that by now.
MJ
At this particular time, I’ll never understand why our friends across the aisle are not as regretful about those jerks who need the same treatment as Stevens. Of course I refer to Murtha, Jefferson, Maloney, Franks and Dodd. I’m being naive, of course, to even think that a liberal class would show any sense of disgust toward the referenced lot. No, before you assume anything, my inference of liberal is not being directed to you personally, ma’am.

How about this…
Have him resign his current term (which doesn’t expire until Jan 2009) immediately, have Palin appoint a replacement for the current term, and promise Alaska voters that if they re-elect Stevens, he will be forced to resign that newly-won term (which starts in Jan 2009) and Palin will appoint that same replacement a second time.
Would that work?
What would work to prevent anger towards Stevens from turning the Senate seat from Republican to Democrat control?
We need more corrupt politicians in jail.

Aren’t you a lawyer? Lol.
My collie says:
C’mon collie, you know that you like grey sheep dogs.
Justice is always swift when a Republican is caught using the Democrat playbook.
and will likely never see a jail cell…
Difference between GOP and DNC?
We clean house;
they promote, praise, and worship their corrupt members.
GOOD BY STEVENS!
The people spoke on Stevens. We don’t want corruption in our party. Unfortunately, the same traits are just ducky with democratics. Kinda makes the equation a bit unbalanced.
Another reason for term limits!
This just a small step in a long journey. It seems today, winning a seat in public office is akin to winning the lottery with state and federal treasuries as the prize.
PS- just watched you shred Ron Brown’s kid, Michael, on Megyn’s show. Excellent as usual.
Yes. It’s been five years now. I’m still shocked that an 84 year old man would risk his career, freedom and good name for more money/gifts. I still can’t believe that people don’t learn that the coverup gets you in deeper trouble than the initial crime itself. I seriously feel bad for the family, especially the grandkids.
I hope they expose Whorebama’s corruption.
Feel neither sad nor sorry for the Senator nor his family. He’ll be off to a cushy “country club” prison specifically designed for someone of his ilk, and his family enjoyed the financial benefits of his corruption. Thats the problem with people in power -they often don’t learn that thier corruption can be discovered and that they can be caught.
Well ok, you seem sincere but you didn’t catch on to my sarcasm.
This is a happy day the king of Pork is turned into sausage….NOW if the Democrat base would just hold their thieves to account WE AMERICANS can clean up this piggish government!
Besides why feel sorry for an 84 year old-bag-of-bones? He’s got so much money stashed around for his family from crooked deals you’d be astonished.
He’s probably taken bribes hundreds of times and finally the music stopped for the guy. So what? Screw em’. Obama’s gonna screw us anyway…
Stevens isn’t going anywhere. His campaign is still active. If the voters re-elect him, the swearing in is before his sentencing. Stevens has the top lawyers in DC. Half the charges have been thrown out which taints the others. And don’t forget the looooong appeal process.
If it were you or me, the key would have been thrown away months ago and our next two generations would have been
blackwhite listed.Yup, I hope next stop is on William Jefferson and restroom b**rd Larry Craig.
If he manages to get reelected, then tossed out, Palin can appoint someone to fill his niche.
Which is another way of saying, the announcement of this verdict before the election was probably politically motivated to give the Dems a chance to avoid a Palin appointment.
I remember several years ago watching Ted Stevens and Robert Byrd, twin queens of pork, spend 1/2 hour on the Senate floor congratulating each other on their pork projects, and trying to tell the audience that it was patriotic to use their seniority to bring federal dollars back to their home states.
Next?? Oh, right. I forgot who controls Congress.
Since the GOP is the ONLY party of the two from which elected officials are held to account it would be a breach of civic duty and common sense to give up on getting a GOP senator in to this seat. Any Democrat would be worse, corruption-wise.
Go Phils!
Never underestimate the American voters ability to re-elect anything. In New York if you could run a pastrami on rye for senator it would win on the Democrat ticket… and if it’s up for re-election it would win by a land slide (and probably do a better job than what’s already there.)
Which makes an interesting point; if Stevens is re-elected (and not being a Democrat he would have to serve his sentence) the Governor of Alaska would then name a replacement until a new election could be held.
The question is: If Sarah Palin replaces a republican with a republican… how many liberals will die of an apoplectic fit? How many will die of an apoplectic fit if she does it just before being sworn in as VP?
I guess the point is moot, regardless of the circumstance the answer is always the same: Not Enough.
If he was a Dem he would win and be given the Chairmanship of a Committee instead of being booted out.
How’s that investigation going with the Cold Cash anyway?
Is this the Mark Foley of 2008? Will this be used as further evidence that the Republicans are evil and cannot be trusted.
Will the folks be fooled into thinking that this reflects poorly on Sarah?
I have come to expect the worst. Stevens was a corrupt crook who got busted. This will be spun in a way to make Republican’s look bad, meanwhile Mr. Freeze still sits in Congress with no rebuke from Pelosi. Hypocritical double standards are the norm.
Did Gov. Palin have any hand in this with her housecleaning up there? Is this a feather in her cap at all? If so, then having her in as VP must be making some in DC shake in their boots…
NOPE. He made his bed now……….
Absolutely no sympathy.
It’s great to see some justice for a member of Congress that spent our stolen tax dollars like a drunken sailor on shore leave (not to insult sailors). I can’t remember where I read this but I can’t take credit for the following quote:
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE!
Never underestimate the Democrats ability to shriek “Holier Than Thou!!!” (in a very girly manner)
The Democrat Party; Mother of the KKK, Father of Jim Crowe, Developers of Legislation Through Lynching, Champions of Segregation, Inventors of Welfare Slavery, and and Protagonists of Illegal Warfare from Southeast Asia to the Balkins. Some how they have been able to convince the American people that THEY are the white knights, cleaner than clean, the men and women you could trust with your children.
How have we let them get away with this? I admire John McCain for many things, but I disagree with him on many others, and letting the Democrats dump this Fannie Mae turdburger on us and not be hauled before a firing squad is just about the breaking point. How can Dodds and Frank be allowed to walk the streets? They’re either stupid or have moxie because there’s plenty of folks like me who want to carve our missing 401K’s out of their fat, bloated hides.
Stevens? Lock him in a crab pot and toss him over the rail of the Cornilia Marie into the Bering Sea, if he’s still alive when they come back and check their catch he can go free. I have a whole list of folks that can take his place on the next go: Starting with Barney Frank and his gay lover at Fannie Mae Herb Moses, the man who developed many of Fannie Mae’s questionably criminal housing and home improvement lending programs.
Unless you’re a Democrat. Then you have the MSM to do the coverup for you.
Big difference! Cunningham got caught but pled guilty. Stevens got caught but took it to trial.
I’m not saying that Cunningham is any better, he just did the right thing when he got caught.
Stevens can rot in hell for all I care.
He reaped what he sowed. Not all do at first, but the Lord knows.
The truth is that Stevens was just doing business as usual for both sides of the aisle. He just had the misfortune to be on the wrong side of the aisle in liberal DC.
With CSPAN and the internet a lot of the crap these men got away with is going the way of the rotary dial telephone. They can no longer do this, the people of this country have wised up and with the help of people like MM, HA, Drudge and a myriad other conservative and nonpartisan bloggers, the light is being shone on them and the voters are saying “no more!”
Do you feel the same about the Presidency? Better to come at Obama in 2012 with a strong Capitalist, I say.
Buh bye!
Country First= Term Limits
Term Limits= No Ted Stevens
Trash-can them all! Time for a do-over!
They’re all a bunch of bloated ticks festering on the bewtocks of society! Get the tweezers and pick them all off one by one. Send them all to China or Saudi Arabia! Why not, they paid for them!
Damn! I picked a fine time to stop sniffing glue!
What a blockhead you are! The Republicans were totally powerless even when they controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House. Beyond that, I am tired of supporting Republicans just because the Democrats are worse.
I’m looking for someone who will fight for the Constitution of the United States of America, providing strong attacks against the Democrats and RINOs that got us in the predicament we’re in now.
McCain and the RINOs continue to go along with the charade that the media is unbiased, that Obama has a right to live, and that Democrats are worthy of respect. Phooey on that! Aggressive, public, and confrontational arguments must be presented to get all the ignorant dufusses out there to stop drinking the Democrat Kool-Aid… or are you one of the many bigots who believe that those people are not capable of rational thought and therefore will NEVER accept the truth about the Democrats they continue to empower?
I see certain people *cough* bill grant *cough* are up to the old lefty thinking that it doesn’t matter how corrupt someone is, just so long as they have an R next to their name (in the Dems case a D).
We will never get our country back with that kind of thinking. The obvious end to that is for total corruption of both parties… oh wait, I think we’re just about there.
Thanks to people like YOU on both sides who are willing to accept it!.
And thank you GOP for really coming through for the faithful by continuing to put up one conservative imposter after another. We may never gain the edge again – and I hope you are happy about that!
OOOKay…Stevens is convicted.
Bush should pardon him.
Problem solved.
We keep the Senate from being filibuster proof.
Play hard ball people.
Win.
Okay, part of me wants to agree with you, but the other part wants to whip someone’s A$$.
After all, the Democrats behave this way out of natural process.
Bummer…
This Stevens old fart goes to jail for doing some home renovation, but Dodd, Obama and their fellow ilk cost taxpayers over $700 billon and are considered the chosen ones…
Sick world, screwed up priorities.
Corruption is rife in both parties, that much is certian. At least the Republicans aren’t socialists. There are a few republicans with integrity, The liberals have none. In ‘92 it looked much the same. Republicans had become corrupt and elitist. I was annoyed with them and sat out the election. And then came eight years of Bubba. The country survived and for a time, the Republicans got their sh*t together (sort of) and life went on. Hubris had taught them a good, if fleeting lesson. Now hubris has returned to the Republican party. Unfortunatly, it’s not 1992 anymore and the world is now a far more dangerous place. I’m concerned that a liberal victory this November will be the end of America as we know it. It’s too high a price to pay for administering the Republican’s much-needed spanking. It’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater and I’ll have no part of it. They’ll have to pry my McCain/Palin vote from my cold, dead hand. I’ll go down with the ship rather than toss my principles.
Another Republican domino falls. I don’t trust Stevens at all, but suddenly, it is not so unlikely that the Dems will get a Senate supermajority. In that case, we would all pay a steep price for his misdeeds.
The GOP never learns. Count on it.
How does Stephens go down so quickly (no doubt he is guilty as charged), while Jefferson is still walking around as a free man? Well, not totally free, now is he? He cost someone about $90,000!
Things that make you go Hmmmm. This would be the same Ted Stephens that “character witness” Mr. Colin Powell recently testified had a “Sterling” reputation for honesty and integrity? That would be the same Mr. Colin Powell who, as a character witness on Meet The Press, endorsed Obama? Hmmmmm! What a good judge of character Mr. Colin Powell is!

It is neither sad nor pathetic. Just because he is old does not make him any more sympathetic than a scumbag mugging you at knifepoint on the street. In point of fact, he is more disgusting and evil.
As a U.S. Senator, he wielded one of the deadliest knives ever invented: government. He used that weapon to commit thievery en mass.
In the great scale of justice, he is only marginally better than a banana-republic dictator, in so far as his actions never resulted (as far as we know) in murder.
The man has been too long upon this earth. May he die in prison friendless, abandoned by family, and haunted by the evil he has perpetrated in the few short years he has left.
May his family be shamed from mentioning his name for two generations.

It is debatable that this was his only offense, just the only one he was convicted of. Where there is one fire, there are usually several more hidden…
However, to answer your question, it is really quite simple. Why did Stevens go down so quickly?
He was made fun of on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Didn’t Ted Stevens do the same thing with his house that Joe Biden did with his home?
Trade favors for land/improvements?
Damn all of these politicians who sell the trust of their constituents for money. Seems to me most people only run for Congress for selfish reasons. Who spends millions of dollars to get a job that pays $165K a year? And how does a regular Joe making $50K a year run for office and leave after a few terms a millionaire (ref: Tom Daschle)? Way past time for term limits. Congress has corrupted itself and we let ‘em get away with it.
Agree…repeal the 17th Amendment.
FirstSkirt #71:
You’re right, there is a crying need for term limits, but the foxes will never lock themselves out of the henhouse.
Of course, there are a select few congressmen, like Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who actually do the right thing. But congressmen who refuse to play the game never get chairmanships or anything else.
