Ohio’s inspector general is investigating why a state agency director approved checking the state child-support computer system for information on “Joe the Plumber.”
Helen Jones-Kelly, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, confirmed today that she OK’d the check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher following the Oct. 15 presidential debate.
She said there were no political reasons for the check on the sudden presidential campaign fixture though the Support Enforcement Tracking System.
Amid questions from the media and others about “Joe the Plumber,” Jones-Kelley said she approved a check to determine if he was current on any ordered child-support payments.
Such information was not and cannot be publicly shared, she said. It is unclear if Wurzelbacher is involved in a child-support case. Reports state that he lives alone with a 13-year-old son.
“Our practice is when someone is thrust quickly into the public spotlight, we often take a look” at them, Jones-Kelley said, citing a case where a lottery winner was found to owe past-due child support. “Our practice is to basically look at what is coming our way.”
Ohio Inspector General Thomas P. Charles confirmed today that he is investigating the incident to determine if “Joe’’s” records were legally accessed by Job and Family Services employees.
The use of a state computer system to search for information on Wurzelbacher is the fourth uncovered by The Dispatch.

Not true. The child support is agreed upon in the final dissolution of marriage (if married). The agreement could state that he pays child support to the mother and that she has custody. Afterwards, she can do what the heck she wants and he still has to pay UNTIL he changes the final order which (coming for someone who has been there) will NEVER happen. So, she can abandon the kid and the dad could be keeping the child but he is still on the hook for the support. If he stopped paying, he is in arrears. He cannot stop paying just because his child is living with him full time. The system is still skewed towards the female – it just is and don’t tell me otherwise.
I called this gal’s office and told them I believe the Director should be fired for using a state agency to further her candidate’s campaign. They asked me if I wanted to leave my name and I said “heck no, the way Obama operates the same thing would happen to me.” What was intriging to me is that they were unaware of what she had done. Does anyone believe that?
Off topic, but I was thinking about the World Series game. If Phila wins, the series will be over tonight. That means that The One will have his 1/2 hour infomercial tomorrow before a non-existant game. Thus, a far smaller audience than he was hoping for. Of course, I wouldn’t put it past him to somehow “fix” the game so that TampaBay wins and it has to go to 6 games!! Do you think he could arrange that?

How many “soon-to-be-voters” do you think know anything at all about this, or actually care enough to look into it for themselves? Do you think that our fellow citizens have any sense of real trouble brewing?
She is a government employee. SHE CAN’T BE FIRED. She may be reprimanded (oh golly gee!) She can do what she wants.
This is why big bureaucratic government is dangerous and inefficient.
It matters not whether any info was made public. The question is whether there was justification for the search.
For example, a cop just can’t do a lookup on someone’s license plate number. Cops have been reprimanded and in fact fired for this in NJ.
Using state or Fed databases for personal curiosity is a violation of policy at the least, or a crime at the most.
I still think the Catholics and the Jews are going to go for McCain. If the Jews are at all alert and listening to the issues and Obama’s obvious anti-semetic leaning, they will not vote for him! I know they have been democrat in the past, but this One is so over the top, even the Jews have to reject him…! McCain is going to get a lot more votes than the polls are showing. I have not despaired!

Mr. Wurzelbacher wasn’t applying for a job with her department. He was not committing any crime and there was no legitimate need to do that kind of search on his records. Slight difference than checking on a prospective employee’s potential debts.
Happy… I get it that you are being objective about this… but what wildly bizarre set of coincidences would need to exist that would cause them to HAPPEN to do a search the DAY AFTER he appeared on TV?

Good point. But that was the reason why I thought it might be legit! IF they saw him, a single dad, and now knew where he was living, wouldn’t it have been prudent to check their records to see if he might possibly be in there as a deadbeat they might be looking for? Maybe that is standard. Has anyone checked to see if they do this as standard practice? I know it’s a stretch. I think you guys are right. I was just trying to play “devil’s advocate” like my spouse tells me to do, and to keep an open mind. It is very very suspicious, so you are probably right.
O.K. This answer is just silly. First of all, I didn’t say ALL Ohio’s records. We were talking about Child Support records. And I didn’t say “without a doubt”. I said “maybe” this one particular search was legit, if they did it as standard practice to find deadbeat dads. Enough said.
