right4life — the thing is, that essay by Orwell could have been written yesterday (someone discussed that here a few days ago). After reading “Notes on Nationalism” I decided there really is an important distinction between nationalism and patriotism and try to fall on the patriot’s side. No essay I have ever read has affected me more.
Orwell was in my humble opinion one of the finest English language writers of the last Century. And he is so hard to pin down. He called himself a socialist, yet he so loved England. He did not want to tear down England or even “change” its core, only make her more just. He wanted socialism, yet looking at the socialists movements since 1900, feared that socialism meant only the gulag, show trials and death.
Um…I’ve gone over my family tree before. Lots of multi racial family — hence all the constant “What are you?” questions. We’ve covered this a bajillion times.
No Irish at all, that I know of.

Well, they do tell you how conservatives — or, at least the ones on this site — think about race. And that’s good to know. I don’t get exposed to this sort of thinking where I live or among people I know. It’s always good to be reminded about what still exists.

Orwell was an interesting character, often the former communists/socialists turn out to be the greatest enemy of that which they once believed in…like Chambers and Burnham. I have heard that Burnham’s managerial revolution was an inspiration for Orwell…

Burnham’s theories had an influence on Orwell, but I think it worked both ways, Orwell also influenced Burnham.
As for the “managerial state” we have been heading that way. Which is why for all the jokes, it is probably incorrect to call Obama a socialist — he is really a supporter of the managerial state.
I have lived in “Yuppieland” most (all) of my working life. I have moved from Arlington, VA to Williamsburg Brooklyn (at the time, not yet Yuppieland), to Brooklyn Heights, to Lincoln Park, Chicago and now Park Slope in Brooklyn. Except for my time in Williamsburg, I was surrounded by other professional types, well educated, and fairly well compensated (though in Arlington, there were lots of junior government types who were not well paid).
Pretty much all the time, I was the lone conservative. One reason is that the managerial state, not socialism, is what really appeals to these folks. They think they will be the managers.
I have a theory, I repeat ad naseum, that Obama was not really the “black” candidate but the liberal yuppie candidate. He is “one of us” as my neighbors would say. And this group feels that they should be in control, and that since the assassination of JFK they have been kept out of power by the old Catholic party bosess and old southern Democrats on the left, and the yahoos on the right.
They just see it as their time.

Dear God no! I am not very hip. The reason I ended up in Williamsburg is that is my family’s old neighborhood, my family knew people there, it seemed like an exciting place to live (I love urban living), and my cousin who lived there found me the apartment.
I LOVED it there, never wanted to move. My mother, who after 35 years in the suburbs never liked moving out of Williamsburg was so angry that I got to live there and she did not (until she died, she joked with me that by talking her out of investing in real estate in the neighborhood in 1990, I lost a lot of money).
Funny thing is, my wife, who is something of a liberal and a big Obama supporter hated Williamsburg. She could not understand why me, Mr. Conservative, loved it.

I lived there, and despite being really into the whole music scene, etc. that exists in that neighborhood, I hated it as well. Too many incredibly self-aware people and haircut hipsters. It’s a bit of a parody of itself.

nyk — we were never that into the music scene there. At the time, I got a kick of the whole guerrilla art scene. You would walk along at night and see an open warehouse door, walk in, and find a play or an art exhibit going on. No sign or anything. It was just something different.
My family was Italian, and there still remains in Willaimsburg an undercurrent of the old Italian families. But many of them sold their old houses to developers who are building luxury townhouses or condos there now. When we moved back to New York last month, we went up to see my cousins and could not believe how much things had changed.
One of my (mom’s) cousins is an artist who lived there before it was hip (like my mom, he was just from the neighborhood). He made a good living with art, but the changes to the neighborhood actually annoyed him. He sold his house and moved to Philly, butu supposedly, for the last 2 weeks, he bicycled around (a 6’6″ 60 year old Italian man!) telling all the “artists” that their art was crap and that they should all move back to Ohio.
When did you live there?

1) You know how people here are always wondering why there aren’t more conservative, Republican voting blacks (and other minorities)? Reread the more recent comments on this thread. I think it gives a little insight.

First of all, your mom’s cousin is AWESOME for doing that.
I lived there twice: once during a summer during college, and once more recently just a couple of years ago. In both cases, it was already in midst of full swing hipster apoplexy, but I think it was more annoying without the net of parental support (when I lived there in college, it seemed more like careless, non-stop fun). I know a lot of people who live in that neighborhood — most of my friends do — and I go to and play shows there and parties and stuff, but I’m sooooooooo happy to be out of there (AND out of the Lower East Side, which is where I moved after, which is more of the same but smellier and triple the price). I just can’t take so much fake earnestness anymore. Not to sound totally cynical, but that’s the effect it ultimately had.

Just got on the computer again and have been reading some of the comments between NYK and some others here.
Let me just state that I couldn’t care less about a persons race, ancestry, etc.
If their political views disagree with mine, then we have a discussion.
Some of the comments, on both sides, seemed to me to sound rather childish. Can’t we act like adults around here?

That, apparently, qualifies as substantive to you — or at least, you don’t find them as objectionable as a desire to see people for whom English is a first language (and who spend so much time declaring that everyone should “SPEAK ENGLISH!”) actually be able to write coherent arguments in that language. You all are really too much sometimes.
The reality is, I responded in kind to a group of people who individually talked about the idea that I write in a way that’s anomalous for a black person (?); that race ties to drinking 40s; that I’m a “hypocrite” for being articulate (!). You (the collective “you,” I mean) find fault only with those who disagree with your agenda. I so rarely hear you call each other out for the sort of amazingly offensive remarks many of you make. Decorum only matters among those who agree here; otherwise, you let ignorance, profanity and prurience rule with reckless abandon.

I am not commenting on Gov Palin, but on the characterization of what she is doing. A level of honesty is required and if anyone has ever been to any type of concert her demonstration of ‘rocking out’ would be defined as tepid.
Gov Palin has got it, but she did not show it in this video.
Of all the candidates, I would prefer to go clubbing, or to a concert, with Gov Palin and Todd. Then with Sen Biden, because he would just be goofy and fun to watch.

There are some exceptions here, and a few good, rational conservatives who critcize the wacko bigots on this blog. But I certainly feel your frustration with the rest. I get angry with myself for being sucked into the muck, and petty sniping. We’re all adults here, but look at what it comes to online.
