John Murtha is running scared; new internal poll shows virtual dead heat

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 29, 2008 12:38 PM

More than a year’s worth of covering GOP upstart Bill Russell’s challenge to smear merchant corruptocrat John Murtha is paying off.

The momentum has shifted. National media and politicos are paying attention. Veterans are standing up against the troop-slandering incumbent. The polls are tightening. (A new one posted at GrassrootsPA shows a virtual dead heat: MURTHA 45.5% RUSSELL 43.7%.)

And John Murtha is squealing like the pig he is.

Here he is cursing his head off and attacking Russell as a carpetbagger. House Democrats have pitched in funds to try and bail him out of his self-created mess.

Here’s the Huffington Post getting unhinged over the Russell surge.

One citizen, Bill Russell, made a difference. Each of you who contributed to Russell’s campaign and spread the word has made a difference.

Keep it up.

John Murtha is running scared. It’s time to run him out of office for good.

Email of the afternoon from reader K.C.:

Michelle,

I am a Democrat through and through and have been all my life. So, I hang my head a little as I admit to you that I often find myself agreeing with your views as stated in your column. Congressman Murtha is not only an embarassment to his party, which is often quite hypocritical as you have said before, but also a burden on the American taxpayer who needs to be free of this corrupt windbag.

For those of you in Pa.:

A final, massive Campaign Rally for Republican 12th District candidate William Russell has been scheduled for this weekend.

Today, Russell Campaign Manager Peg Luksik announced the final rally will be held Sunday November 2, 2008, at the Day’s Inn in New Stanton, PA at 2pm. “This is an opportunity for all of our campaign staff, poll workers, individual and group supporters to come together for one last, big event before election day,” said Luksik.

Luksik also announced that several national conservative organizations including; Gun Owners of America, Move America Forward, Veterans for Freedom and the Minutemen have all asked to participate.

“This has been a campaign unlike any other in America,” said Bill Russell. “I invite anyone who hasn’t yet had a chance to meet with me, to come to this event.”

I am leaning more and more to that philosophy of throwing out incumbents every time when I go to the polls. There are times I hesitate when I see a good office holder, but I suspect that in the long run we’re holding to the true intent of the Founding Fathers… especially regarding term limits. I’m kicking and scratching on my way to that thought process but I’m open to it.

The American people are just as guilty of this sad state of affairs just like their sainted incumbents. People are creatures of habit and stay with politicians who give them something for their vote. Look no further than Barnie Frank as an explanation.

Sad thing is Oldcollege is I have been going to teh RNC since 1992 telling them that very thing. The media is no longer the best way to connect with the voter. The dems have re learned the old machine style politics can beat a media driven campaign.

I argued to them that the GOP needs to do real actual party building. Get money to grassroots organizers and create a group of motivated conservatives that can not only get votes for you but can also be used to recruit future candidates for races. One of the GOP’s major weaknesses is it has serious problems recruiting good candidates for office.

The GOP needs to create a more stable party with stronger community connections. We can’t keep winging it every election being swept in and out of office whenever the public gets fickle.

The dems keep in office because they have strong organizations like the NAACP, the Unions and other lefty groups financed and organized behind them.

Flyoverman…. I guarantee you that at the Marine Corps ball here in MN…. which will be 6 days after the election… you’ll see Marines of all ages and sizes…. doing the Snoopy dance… then we’ll straighten our uniforms and drink to the Corps( ahem)

I was afforded the good fortune to be invited to the Marine Corps Ball one year and it was truly an honor. They were amused by my powder blue rank boards, yellow cavalry pant leg stripe, etc. but I was well received and had a fabulous time. Brothers and Sisters in arms.

Semper Fidelis. Enjoy the Snoopy Dance.

What does Russell know about the Pennsylvania district Murtha has served for 34 years?

Ummm… He doesn’t need to know about the people; he just needs to know what kind of representation Western PA people deserve.

When Hillary Clinton moved into New York she took the work she had to do seriously.

Carpetbagging is fine if you have a D after your name.

Yeah, his passion to slander them.

As for being a democrat – I used to be one (then my eyes opened). Nevertheless I’ll vote for my House Rep. Even though he’s a Democrat he voted against the crap sandwich *BOTH* times. (Besides he’s unopposed).

Just donated again to West and Russell..I kinda wonder in the afternmath of this election if we conservatives are going to be wholly responsible for funding conservative candidates..it seems to me the Repubs have no problem ignoring opportunities for victory.

What I am amazed about in this election is how common sense seems so absent amongst the people and the Repubs…have people come to believe that one-party rule by an unpopular democratically-controlled congress is going to make things better??

It’s time for Murtha to declare defeat, only this time rather than disparaging our military, he can admit he has been beaten by the enemy, except his enemy is actually the good guy for the majority of Americans.

“His passion for the troops cannot be questioned.”

I question it. Without waiting for a field investigation, an Article 32 investigation, or the result of courts-martial, this sanctimonious boob took it on himself to brand these Marines murderers, claiming from his pedestal of political ignorance that they panicked. The initial investigation, driven by political pressure, is what caused the initial charges to be filed against the Marines. In the Article 32 investigations (the military equivalent to a Grand Jury) the government provides it’s evidence that a crime has been committed by the service member, and the defense is given the opportunity to rebut that evidence. In most cases of the Haditha Marines, there was either insufficient or no evidence of any wrongdoing, and the charges were dropped. In the cases that have gone to trial, the courts-martial have found them not guilty, with one of the military judges expressing his disgust at the fact that the Marine was charged at all.

Yes, I have much more faith in the military’s justice system than the civilian courts.

As for Murtha, he has not apologized. He has been confronted by the father of an acquitted Marine and blathered, rather than apologize. His unspeakable hypocrisy of claiming to support the military while demonizing members of what was his own service for political expediency alone, in my mind, disqualifies him from serving as a member of the House of Representatives.
