If the world could vote, Barack Obama would win by a landslide.
He’d take 78 percent of the vote in France, 72 percent in Germany, 70 percent in Canada and 61 percent in Japan, according to global newspaper polls and Harris Interactive, a market research firm in Rochester, N.Y.
Beneath those numbers, running parallel to Obama-mania, is a shifting global view of the United States.
One week before Election Day, the world is revising its opinion of America. After a drop of confidence in the United States, presidential candidate Barack Obama has revived the U.S. brand, exporting a vision of American renewal to a world watching the election with unprecedented interest.
“He’s just stirred the imagination of ordinary people,” said Daniel Kinnear, a veteran diplomat based in South Africa. “For a country like South Africa that is coming out of a legacy of apartheid and is still dealing with its legacy, Obama remains a sign of hope. There’s an incredible romanticism of having a black American on the forefront of change in the United States.”
“If Obama does win, this could also be the moment when the world stops hating America,” Vir Sanghvi, an Indian columnist, wrote in the Hindustan Times. “The world will feel engaged by an Obama presidency. By electing Obama they have the chance to earn … goodwill, to transform their country’s image, and to finally stem the rising tide of global anti-Americanism.”
Since President Bush took office in 2000, approval of the United States has dropped, along with its soft power — indirect influence by which the United States can advance its policy goals without the use of force or coercion.
Through wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, plus the ineffable war on terror, America’s battle tactics have cut into its moral standing abroad.
Europe experienced the rise of “friendly fire anti-Americanism” when protests against America rocked longstanding U.S. allies such as France, Spain and Germany, where roughly one in three people now hold a favorable view of the United States — significantly fewer since the war in Iraq.
In this year’s Pew Global Attitudes poll, the United Kingdom was the only European country surveyed in which a majority of people, 53 percent, expressed a positive view of the United States.

Been to Europe lately? It’s nice to visit, but a good many people who live there would rather be here.
Yep. You can judge what people think of a country by how many people want to live here. And, there are more people that want to come here than any other nation in the world. American can’t be too bad.
The world hates us because we are rich and powerful and it makes them look weak and ineffective. So rather than build themselves up they need to tear America down.

The US avoided a nuclear world war III partly by meeting with leaders of the Soviet Union. We’re talking Nixon, Carter, and Reagan.

You know – in a past corporate life, I traveled internationally about 50% of the time. Honestly, I didn’t see all this supposed anti-Americanism. The “only” people who were anti-USA were college professors (not students) and some of those in the press (and some gov’t officials too). The rest of the people I met and worked with, at pretty much all levels of society, wished they could have the american dream. This was not only economic, it was also the freedoms, the social structure, the opportunities. Many even respected the USA for it’s willing to be “policeman” to the world. Without us, many realized their own security was in danger. We weren’t hated.
I wish this bit would air every 30 seconds until the election’s over.

conservative rus that has been my experience visiting foreign nations, the news broadcasts say we are horrid, but the people come up to you and ask you questions about what america is REALLY like because they can’t believe the freedoms and prosperity we have. my 1st trip to russia in 1991 had flocks of people asking if our stores had all those goods as they had seen in movies, or cars on the streets, or could drive across the country without stops to check id cards and papers.
I noticed a lot of them shut up when I mentioned the tsunami aid. As for the rest of the money we spread around abroad, I say let’s cut it out and give it back to the suffering US taxpayers. If we’re going to do the time, we may as well do the crime.
The world needs to hate us. We are their scapegoat. Without their hate for us, they’d have to take a hard look at themselves and realize that they are the only ones responsible for their failed countries. Obama isn’t going to change that. Are we even sure that Obama likes this country?

There has been a current of anti-Americanism in the world since our nation was established, a current which exists for bad reasons, which continues to this day, and which will continue whether Obama gets elected or not. Muslims are indoctrinated to hate America as an infidel superpower, an affront to their sense that Islam should reign supreme. Nothing Obama does will change that Muslim bigotry.
Likewise, nothing will change the lies told about America. Indira Ghandi told Indian farmers that America stopped the monsoon rains one year. Pakistani madrassas teach Muslim kids that America created dinosaurs to eat Muslims. The Turks believe that America is harvesting organs from Iraqis for transplant into Americans back home. Unless Obama shuts off the global weather machine, stops the production of dinosaurs, and ends the organ trade, these foreign idjits will still hate America out of ignorance.

I got to observe the change in the US Army in Central Europe between 1983 and 1990 when Communism fell. The forces in Europe and reinforcing units from the CONUS were totally transformed by Reagan so dramitcally that for the first time since WWII a Soviet CONVENTIONAL attack on Western Europe could have been won by us CONVENTIONALLY. The equipment, ammunition, other supplies, additional soldiers and increased training were all paid for by Reagan’s defense budgets paid for by tax cuts.
I agree SDI was the last straw, but that was the last chess move that created checkmate. But the committment to finally winning conventionally on land, sea, and air left them with only the nuclear option. SDI was the last straw after they had an entire hay bail dropped on them.
I forgot that the U.S. and its interests were never attacked when the world loved us during the Clinton years….Oh right, it happened repeatedly. But certainly our civilian interests were attacked more during the Bush years…what, they weren’t?
It’s almost like world standing does matter at all when in comes to security? But that couldn’t be, the light worker said so.

The liberals are so worried about being liked in the world and the scary thing is I think they get it. The only way foreigners are going to “like” us is if we are equals. The world wants a U.S. that is unable to kick a$$ when it is needed. The world hated the Romans and British, the most advanced country always gets the brunt.
