Aerosmith’s Joe Perry comes out of the closet

Well, whaddya know? Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is a lifelong Republican who opposes Obama. The Boston Herald reports:
Aerosmith has generally left the politics to bands like U2 and the Dixie Chicks, but axeman Joe Perry says national security and economic woes have prompted him to split from the rest of the entertainment world and throw his support behind John McCain.
“We pretty much stay out of it, but seeing so many people come out for Obama, I just felt like ‘What the hell, I might as well raise my hand for this side,” Perry said from his Duxbury home.
The Bay State rockers have done a few fund-raisers for the Kennedy family over the years, but Perry’s endorsement of McCain marks a first for the platinum-selling guitarist/songwriter.
…“I’ve been a hardcore Republican my whole life,” he told the Herald. “My mother and father drilled into me from the very start that if you work hard and be positive, you’ll get what you’re working for. I guess I’m living proof of that.”
…“I’m an optimist. It ain’t over till its over,” he said. “I think that he’s got a chance.”

Joe Perry was always my favorite in the band, anyways!
Well, Janie’s gotta gun…and maybe she’ll get to keep it.
Who wudda thought…..
I guess because Aerosmith has done a good job of staying away from politics is why this is a surprise.. (albeit a pleasant one)
I think entertainers endorsing politicians or engaging in politics is just bad business, but if you’re gonna do it, it doesn’t hurt you with me if you agree with me. BTW, I do like Aerosmith.
Good for him.
He is one of the greatest guitarists in rock.
Nice to have his endorsement.
The dude loves to cook, and has his own brand of hot sauce, so what’s not to like? I hope he doesn’t have to go through the vile nonsense the liberal lefties regurgitate after such disclosures.
I generally agree — and from the article, Joe Perry makes clear that he doesn’t like doing it either. But there’s been such overwhelming Hollyweird lobbying for Obama, he decided to take a stand:
Oh, don’t! It’s so addictive, it’ll cut into your blogging time.
Good for Joe for standing up. Where I work, the conservatives meet in secret groups, trading whispered stories and opinions, because, don’tcha know, “diversity” means anything but diversity of opinion! (Especially conservative or Christian opinion).
I wonder who’s going to start changing the Aerosmith song, “Janie’s Got a Gun to “Sarah’s Got a Gun?”
Wow… who would’ve thunk it!
Great! Now I can listen to something else besides Trace Adkins (love him) and Ted Nugent (over-hyped dork).
I read in Ted Nugent’s book some years back that he went along with Aerosmith on tour to help keep some of the guys in recovery clean and introduced them to the joys of target shooting. I think Perry is a friend of the Nuge’s, so I’m not surprised.
Heh. I keep hearing “Dude Looks Like A Lady” when I see pics of Barry now.
My advice, Michelle, is to take the time you will invest in learning to play the game and invest it in learning to play the guitar. It is most rewarding. You can do it!
Corny, but I gotta’ do this…
JOE PERRY ROCKS!!!
Awesome!!!
Takes a lot of guts to come out as a conservative in the land of loons. While I’m in agreement with b-cat about celebrities and politics, I admit that it’s nice when one of those celebs seems to get why I think the way that I do.
Good luck, Joe. I’m sure you’re gonna need it.

OK, Joe. Im sorry about all those terrible things I said about you when you appeared on American Idol. We are sympatico again. You go Joe!!! (Watch out for the mainstream media though; they have a thing about going after “Joes” that dont vote Dim-ocrap..First Joe the Plaumber, now Joe the Rock Star Guitarist?)
For the first time in my life, I think I may become a “groupie”!
Seriously, this is good news. Arrowsmith has made some awesome music over the years, and I’ll feel better yet when I hear one of their songs now that I know this little tidbit of info.
Damn…a high-profile Republican so close to left-leaning Boston, no less…ain’t that a wicked pissah!
Dude, whatever you do, don’t walk to close to the Charles River. You might be going for a swim.
*out*
Someone already did….
He just lost any Obamabot followers he may have had, but he just picked up a whole new group of fans who would gladly pay money to see him.
The USA is still a center-right country. We outnumber the Commies, but the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy has gained control of key positions across a wide swath of the MSM, Corporate America, Government, Universities, etc.
The Ultra-Left has been at war against us domestically for decades. It’s time to stop playing just defense and start playing offense.
You can’t win when all you ever do is play defense.
I thought we weren’t supposed to care what entertainers had to say about politics.
I’ve had a crush on Joe Perry since I was in the 7th grade!
WTG Joe!
MM, can you look around and see about Zakk Wylde’s views? I hear he is also a sane one.
BTW, I haven’t slept since buying the new GH World Tour!

Great idea!
“Sarah’s got a gun . . . Sarah’s got a gun . . . all the libs are on the run . . . “
Prediction: the Jann Wenner’s of the world will now begin to try to marginalize Aerosmith.
I am converting my sizable LP collection to CDs. Might be time to put the blues on hold a little while and go get some Aerosmith this weekend.
Good News! Nugent is on the team also.
Take that cRappers for Odopey! Ha!
It’s Killin em and
I Love it!!!
McCain/Palin 08′
wow too cool.
Maybe America is in the closet, too, despite what Chris Matthews and his buddies tell us?
Wowza. That map has not changed for a long time!
I always liked their music too. Oh, you’re talking about the city. Nevermind.
I need to drag out my Toys in the Attic cd.
That’s pretty courageous of Joe. Most r’n'r stars seem to be liberal. He will surely take some crap for this from some of Aerosmith’s fans. Good for him, though.
And GO PHILLIES!!!!
I like the fact that he not only made an endorsement, but he articulated a reason why.
Most celebrity endorsements end at Hope and Change.

We don’t “care” about outrageous personal insults of anyone who disagrees with them, or idiotic statements about conservative candidates (ie, Whoopi asking McCain if she should be concerned about a return of slavery in America under his presidency). This kind of thing is not worth listening to or taking seriously; it’s only good for being mocked, which we do.
bHo has ‘Toys in the Attic’.
Or when Bruce Springsteen and others introduce their songs with political diatribes, insulting their paying customers. Brings to mind Ronstadt!
I’m feeling Sweet Emotions now!
(Pun Intended)
I’m pretty sure you won’t hear Joe spewing out how BHO isn’t invited to his shows either, a la Madonna.
Joe, watch out! Your computer records are next!
yes… bad business in general, but sometime it’s worthwhile doing.
And who ever is playing guitar hero there has some 133t skilz…
Santa.. don’t forget to bring Michelle a Guitar Hero Aerosmith for Christmas.
Joe the Plumber, meet Joe the Perry! (couldn’t resist)
Brings back fond memories of the Aerosmith concerts of my youth…
When they put their reputation and careers on the line, yeah, we pay attention.
Which is what conservatives do when they speak out in Hollyweird. Because, once again, liberals have no tolerance for a diversity of opinion.
Guitar Hero is too cool! I gotz l33t skilz on easy mode!
I loved their appearance on Waynes World…
One of the best SNL skits ever.
Ya know, both times SNL scored big with ratings in the last decade and a half was because they had Republicans on… go figure!!!!
Yeah, but be careful on “expert” mode. I tried that once on “Jessica” by the Allman Brothers, and I couldn’t play piano for a week.
Great…one MORE reason for my wife to swoon over Joe Perry…
(I like Sweet Melissa Better)
That is simply not true. We tolerate and embrace a wide variety of political opinions: granola crunchy liberals, union liberals, ivy league liberals, hand-me-out poor folk liberals, hollywood elite liberals…
I don’t know about GH, but any Allman Bros is pretty good.
Joe Perry on one side, and George Will on the other. Who has more clout in the conservative movement? Please don’t say Joe Perry!
From the invasion of Iraq to the selection of Sarah Palin, carelessness has characterized recent episodes of faux conservatism. Tuesday’s probable repudiation of the Republican Party will punish characteristics displayed in the campaign’s closing days.
McCain revived a familiar villain — “huge amounts” of political money — when Barack Obama announced that he had received contributions of $150 million in September. “The dam is broken,” said McCain, whose constitutional carelessness involves wanting to multiply impediments to people who want to participate in politics by contributing to candidates — people such as the 632,000 first-time givers to Obama in September.
Why is it virtuous to erect a dam of laws to impede the flow of contributions by which citizens exercise their First Amendment right to political expression? “We’re now going to see,” McCain warned, “huge amounts of money coming into political campaigns, and we know history tells us that always leads to scandal.” The supposedly inevitable scandal, which supposedly justifies preemptive government restrictions on Americans’ freedom to fund the dissemination of political ideas they favor, presumably is that Obama will be pressured to give favors to his September givers. The contributions by the new givers that month averaged $86.
Wow. Jumping ship all over! It’s good to see common sense cons with at least an ounce of integrity.
This is pretty funny – some skank with teased hair, who has overdosed a few times thinks McCain is the solution.
And you people are excited about this?
Jeez!
Who is George Will?
There are an awful lot of skanks with teased hair who od’d that are voting for Obama.
Who is Watershed?
MtsEdge: pssst. PELOSI
I’ll see your George Will and raise you Hillary’s disenfranchised (there’s that word, again) supporters.
I’ll go with Movin’ Out, the first Aerosmith song (and the first one co-written by Joe Perry).
30 – LOVE IT!!!! ROFL
No more so than when you all get excited about all the homeless people who “support” Obama.
They are bitter and clingy (to Hillary). They apparently belong with you guys anyway.
Thanks!
That, from people who are excited about Michael Moore, Spike Lee, Susan Sarandon, the Dixie Chicks, …..
I really couldn’t care less what Hollyweird thinks. But, I do like it when a Conservative in a mostly liberal industry has the courage to admit it.
It’s to Bad joe is stuck in this blue wasteland called Massachusetts. No matter how many of us vote for McCain, you know this state will still be blue. But I still vote in every election anyway.
Kudo’s Joe!
Aerosmith has a lot of songs available on iTunes, just in case anyone wants to voluntarily spread their own wealth in Joe Perry’s direction.
Aww Chappy, Play nice.
30, you’re on the ball today!
Go get ‘em!
I’m going to ask my wife for Guitar Hero for Christmas now
I didn’t know they made GH for the Wii.
Seriously, you’d be more talented than I would be with that.
Ha!
OK, I always thought he was hot. Now he’s REALLY hot.
Sorry, just had to get that out of my system.
It’s going to be an Aerosmith Christmas.
I’ve always been more of a Rock Band guy, but…i like Perry. Definitely talented, glad to see he’s standing up for what he believes.
Why is a watershed?
Thanks! I was also thinking of Joy Behar.
Thanks, tre! A friend lifted my spirits. I think I was suffering from Obama-itis. It’s all cleared up.
Please don’t feed the trolls!!
There are lots of Republican celebs out there, most of them are good lookin…go figure.
Janine Turner (heard her on conservative radio the other day) she has been coming out lately showing her Support for the McCain/Palin ticket (mostly for Palin).
She played the Mayor of Cicely, Alaska in her time with Northern Exposure.
Chaps got you there!
Aerosmith has always been one of my all time favorites.
While I agree with the sentiments expressed above about entertainers and politics (including by Perry himself), I’m glad he’s on our side. He’s definitely one of the best guitarists in rock of the last several decades, and he came up in an era when rock music was chock full of virtuoso guitarits.
Janine Turner was on Huckabee last weekend. Definitely a plus for the conservatives!
Just hope it doesn’t ruin her career with the liberal Hollywood crowd.
It’s pretty cool that a member of one of my favorite bands shares my idealogical views. Celebrities don’t sway me with their opinions, but it’s nice to know you are on common ground with people you admire. This totally made my day…and makes me want to listen to my A Little South of Sanity CDs!
Good one, FM!
Reminds me of when we used to use that in the late 60s-early 70s!
Please give that poster a rimshot!
She was not the mayor. She was a bush pilot.
and we don’t even have to give him a cigarette and a ride to get hem to vote!
Edna Hancock who ran the general store was the mayor
nlebou – she started out as the pilot, on the show, she did become the Mayor.
google it.
ooops she did not run general store that was Ruth Anne
But this was hardly my point…
A couple of summers ago, I was at an Aerosmith concert at Jones Beach. There was a runaway extending from the stage to the wheelchair section (I’m in a wheelchair). Joe strutted out to the front of the runway to take a solo. He ripped off his T-shirt and threw it right to me.Some idiot ripped it out of my hand and ran away with it. Anyway, the point of the story is that Joe is a good guy.
Good. That give me a reason to continue to support their music.
Yeah, I loved that show and I did see Turner on Larry King the other night. She is great.
One of my friends caught a drumstick at one of their concerts. She still has it. I saw them in New Orleans several years ago.
I’m supposing then that the rest of hollywood who is supporting Obama…isnt filled with the same caliber of people? I mean seriously…do you even *think* before you type?
Steven Tyler is right-leaning & supported Bush. Can’t believe no one brought that up before now:

They tend to keep things like this quiet, for good reason (see: Plumber, Joe the)
How odd from someone from Massachusetts to endorse a Republican. I guess that makes The Perrys and my family the only ones.
