Protest at the L.A. Times: Free the tape! Updated

Several southern California readers send word that there will be a protest at the L.A. Times building today at 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern over the suppressed Obama/Khalidi tape.
Here’s the info:
I just got word that there is a planned protest to try and force the LATimes to release the video of Obama/Rashid Khalidi. If people cannot physically attend the protest at the LATimes Headquarters building in downtown Los Angeles, they are encouraged to call the offices at (213) 237-5000, fax a request to release the video or complaint against their current stance to (213) 237-7679.
Your participation in this is of the highest priority to provide information to the voters in time to present a clear picture of the Democratic candidate’s coziness with individuals possessing extreme views in direct opposition to US foreign policies.

I understand that the tape was leaked to the Times by a source or sources unknown, and that an agreement was struck with that source to keep the tape hidden, but the tape has been described in a Times story already, and it quite obviously contains no state secrets. I also suspect that the tape could be posted in such a way as to obscure its origins. The Times, however, won’t discuss in detail why it’s keeping the tape from its readers, and the newspaper’s “readers’ representative,” Jamie Gold, has lined up against the readers, and argued against the release of the tape.
There is another reason why the tape should be posted: It might actually create interest in the L.A. Times. From what I understand, the mainstream media is in a bit of trouble these days. Perhaps — this is just a thought here — the L.A. Times could better its position in the world by drawing readers to its website.

Inspired by commentators on the Internet and cable television, thousands of people e-mailed and phoned The Times to demand the release of the tape. Hundreds of others expressed support for the paper’s decision.
The controversy stems from an article by Times staff writer Peter Wallsten that the newspaper published on April 10, exploring Obama’s relationships with Palestinian Americans and Jews in Chicago. The article explained how Obama had managed to be held in high esteem by both groups. It described a party in 2003 for Khalidi, a renowned scholar on the Palestinians who in the 1970s had acted as a spokesman for Yasser Arafat’s Palestine Liberation Organization.
Some participants at the event spoke sharply against Israel. One young woman accused the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of the Palestinians. Obama “adopted a different tone,” according to the article, “and called for finding common ground.”
The reporter and his editors said they found it ironic to be criticized now for allegedly trying to protect Obama, noting that the story had drawn strong rebukes from Obama supporters. Commentators at two websites — the Nation and Talking Points Memo — charged that the newspaper had unfairly suggested that the Democrat could not have allies in both communities.
Wallsten said he had worked on and off for several weeks to gather information on Obama’s relationships in the Palestinian American community, with sources speaking only on condition of anonymity, including one who had the video.
The reporter’s editor said the paper would have preferred to be able to post the video on its website but could not get the source to agree.
“If we had not reached this agreement, we would not have had access to this tape at all. Then no one would ever have known Obama attended this event and spoke at it,” said the editor, Aaron Zitner. “We were pushing to say the most we could and to present the most we could to readers about what happened. And we did that.”

Besides, tomorrow is Friday and the weekend means a downturn in those paying hard attention to news cycles. Unless the tape is released early tomorrow or Monday, they’ll hold it long enough to help Obama potentially win.
L.A. Times releasing the tape? That wouldn’t be the same paper that pushed to release sealed divorce documents of one Jack Ryan, would it? You know, the guy that Barack defeated by making him drop out of the race.

I agree. Looks like they would put it up on their site, to draw interest in the paper; but then again, maybe that’s why they’re holding back – to pique the public’s interests in the tape into a fervor, and then release it.
However, regardless of the LAT’s reasons for holding it back, I think it is a disservice to the public good for them not to release the tape before the election and I wish the protesters the best of luck.
I mean, isn’t the purpose of the press to inform the public, to help them make informed decisions based on the information there is to be gathered, especially during an election? Isn’t that what they are specifically charged with doing in the Constitution?

I think it’s a certainty that the tape has already been edited, or is being edited now, so all embarrassing actions of or references to Osama Obama are left off.
BTW: The LA Slimes ran an editorial today tut-tutting over the Palin effigy hung in front of a house in West Hollywood. They essentially said it was “unfortunate,” even though it would have been awful if it had been a black man effigy.

However, by not releasing it, McCain’s supporters are more than welcome to speculate as to what is on it as much as they want, doing far more damage with rumor and innuendo than with actual knowledge.
Few things are more damaging than rumors, and so long as they refuse to play it, they lend credence to the claim that it is as damaging or worse than what they say it is.
If he is not what we have been saying he is, then they should release it and prove us all wrong, solidifying his win and prooving us all to be what they claim.
If he is exactly what we claim him to be or worse…then by all means…hold on to the tape and let us all run with the rumors as to what is there.

There will be malaise allright. Obama and his fellow Communists know how their policies destroy. They have destroyed every nation in which they have been tried. Jimmy Carter nearly did it in less than 4 years by the very same policies which Obama now desires to deploy. He wants to weaken our defenses for the sake of “negotiations” with terrorists. He wants to restrict our supply of energy. He wants to destroy industries with greater regulations, forcing unionization down the throats of every business, and driving capital in to hiding with punitive tax rates.
Now they know the mistake Carter made. He did not destroy the opposition. He did not rig elections. He did not threaten violence. He did not confiscate the peoples weapons. Obama won’t make those same mistakes. The country rejected Marxism when they overwhlemingly voted him out of office in 1980. Obama knows that will be his fate unless he suspends the Constitution or intimidates the populace. I believe that he is willing to do that. Regardless of what the Left has said about George Bush, he will leave office peacefully in January. Better watch, because that will probably mark the end of the noble experiment that was America.
What if: the LA Times agreed to use what is on the tape on the condition that they not release the tape itself? And the original story came out in April so this all smacks of desperation.
They need to release the tape. It is unjournalistic to withhold information as such and if they do not, I wish them failure for their disregard of journalistic objectivity.
The LA Times has no qualms about posting classified information that can hurt this country regardless of the source.
I’ve never trusted that “anonymous” source or we have to “protect” our source excuse. The newspapers have abused that trust too many times.

Exactly right! Obama has hidden so much information that should be public, i.e. his LSAT scores, birth certificate, Columbia records, tried to hide the Annenberg project files, etc., etc., that you can’t help but wonder what he is hiding.
The facts:
1) if the tape is nothing, then there is no harm in releasing it. Why does the LATimes even have it, if there was a stipulation never to use it?
2) if the tape is something, then hiding it when everyone knows of its existence is potentially more damaging, as you state. Everyone knows that you get damaging info out early and make a statement. Hiding just leads to trouble.
3) the refusal to release the video is tacit admission that it could hurt Obama in some way, and that the rumors are true.
4) The LATimes is in bed with Obama.

If it was a tape of some national secret the tape would have already been released and Boooosh would have already been blamed.

I am not encouraged by this at all. This election should not even be within 20 points. Ginsberg’s words are haunting to me, knowing that the archivist could destroy any record of our past that they find “inconvenient”:
