John McCain really did open up the ‘political Halloween costume’ field with this Joe the Plumber stuff, a smartass can dress as just about anything now and it’s “relevant” and “clever.” I am imagining running into a few “sexy Joe the Plumbers” tonight, and maybe Malkin will go as “sexy Jawad the suspected terrorist”!
Naw, actually I’m guessing she goes as an unironic Sarah Palin. I’m not sure she has a well-developed sense of irony.

Sad, and true. Two things that make my head explode:
1. How can voters not notice the classic socialist shutdown of dissent? BO kicks dissenting reporters off his plane, individual citizens who question His Majesty are raked over the coals, television stations are denied access.
2. How can anyone with half a brain believe that 95% of workers will get an income tax cut when 40% of them pay no income tax? And if the refund is to offset social security taxes, how come they’ll still get to draw social security benefits??
Please, God, make all the idiot voters stay home!

Watershed will be dressed as a water closet
This is one of my favorite ’spread the wealth stories, I apologise if you’ve seen it before, but it’s a good read for those who haven’t.
I was thinking about getting a big cardboard box and cutting it to look like a TV, then dressing as FDR and talk about the “crash of ‘29″ from inside the TV.
I hate to mention it but I made a very similar comment as this cartoon after the last debate.

I didn’t watch the infomercial. But, I heard that he made the scariest comment yet. So scary, that if he actually made it, that is all that should be on the news from now until election day.

You can disagree about whether or not Pelosi and Reid are clever, but I think everyone would agree they are relevant.

Klaatu, this is what Obama proposed earlier this year.
“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set,” Obama said. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.”
Let’s take a look at the proposal. This is in addition to the military and all of the county, state, local, and Federal security organizations already in place. Its structure has three significant facets.
First it is National so it can cross state boundries. It can thus CONCENTRATE anywhere. Second, it is civilian. What do civilian security agencies have that the military does not? The power to arrest. Third, it is “just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded” as the military.
Obama’s proposed size of this force is 250,000. Since this force would be within the US its logistical needs would be minimal. therefore they could have more “trigger pullers” than a compable military group, because there is no need to deploy to an overseas area with no logistical services. Also the need for heavy armor and artillery is minimal, so you can have more aviation assets.
The 9/11 terrorsts totalled 19. So what is the purpose of a paramilitary organization of 250,000 given the agencies already in place? Disbursing them makes no sense, because if totally disbursed they would duplicate most any town/city’s SWAT team. A company sized unit (150) would be the minimum size to be effective
I commanded both an infantry company and a light infantry battalion. I could secure a city of 50,000 with my one 600 man battalion. One 5,000 man brigade of the 82nd Airborne secured Detroit during their riots.
Obama’s national security force could easily equip and deploy 30, 5,000 man brigades. The entire US Army Reserve is currently 220,000. At its peak the US had 165,000 personnel in Iraq.
Historically, the last time the Western World saw a paramilitary organization of this size with the amount of combat power at its disposal was …. the Waffen SS.
So Watershed, LGM, nyk, et. all, you tell us what a national force of this size with the power of arrest is supposed to exist for? Do you think it’s a good idea? What threat does it protect the country from? Are we suppposed to “save 10 billion dollars a month” and withdraw from Iraq to pay for this force? I cannot wait for the rationalization.

My first thought was, ‘is that woman for real?’. The ‘One’ has really convinced some people that they will be on Easy Street if he gets elected. Why would anyone want to work really hard to be successful when the fruits of their efforts will go to someone like this? I’m not substantive enough on the “Halloween” thread? That’s what you go for? C’mon, abstract. You can do better. Good fun is good fun. I think discussing say, taxes, and giving a “you’re stoopit” response is slightly different that giving costume suggestions. Take say, literally anything that comes out of Bud Fox’s corner, for example.
But go for that “gotcha”! It’s cool.

I discussed costumes. That’s pretty Halloweeny.
My nephew is a great kid…just very young. He will come around. He has had a job since he was 12 doing yard work and has a part time job on top of carying a full load at LSU. He just feels that Obama’s law degree makes him more qualified. He will come around. I am just happy that he is not registered to vote yet.

Without debating the merits of such policies (I personally don’t like subsidies to the auto industry, for example), the difference between paying for ‘gas and mortgages’ for this woman and the examples you gave is the concept of externalities.
A policy decision is made that the benefits to third parties by assisting car companies, for example, outweight the drawbacks of subsidizing them. Subsidies help the companies provide American jobs, for example, or provide cheaper automobiles for consumers. Likewise, a policy decision was made that the benefits in terms of foreign policy and stability in Iraq is worth the payment.
On the other hand, paying for this woman’s ‘gas and mortgage’ provides no apparent benefits to third parties. Subsidizing someone who doesn’t want to have to work to make her payments doesn’t benefit anyone else other than her (or her immediate family, friends, etc.)
This is the very reason my four children have been raised to work for those nice things they wanted, right back to their formative years and even when I can well afford to give it to them. They’re not perfect , but at least they are Conservatives.
