Palin cleared by independent counsel
News you won’t see flogged above the fold in tomorrow’s national newspaper front pages: Sarah Palin has been cleared of ethics violations by an independent counsel (as opposed to the legislative probe).
From the Anchorage Daily News:
A new report just released — hours before the polls open on Election Day — exonerates Gov. Sarah Palin in the Troopergate controversy.
The state Personnel Board-sanctioned investigation is the second into whether Palin violated state ethics law in firing her public safety commissioner, and it contradicts the earlier findings by a special counsel hired by the state Legislature.
Both investigations found that Palin was within her rights to fire Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.
But the new report says the Legislature’s investigator was wrong to conclude that Palin abused her power by allowing aides and her husband, Todd, to pressure Monegan and others to dismiss her ex-brother-in-law, Trooper Mike Wooten. Palin was accused of firing Monegan after Wooten stayed on the job.
The Palins have argued that Wooten was a loose cannon who had tasered his stepson, drank beer in his patrol car, and threatened Palin’s father, and that their complaints that he shouldn’t be on the force were justified.
The Troopergate matter became sharply politicized after Palin was announced as Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s running mate in Tuesday’s election.
The report, released at a Monday afternoon press conference at the Hotel Captain Cook, presents the findings and recommendations of Anchorage lawyer Timothy Petumenos, hired as independent counsel for the Personnel Board to examine several complaints against Palin.
Petumenos wrote the Legislature’s special counsel, former state prosecutor Steve Branchflower, used the wrong state law as the basis for his conclusions and also misconstrued the evidence.

Wish this would have been announced a few days ago. I think the Governors image is tarnished by trooper gate, but the media has by now hung several other tags on her. How much does this matter now?
I have hopes that Governor Palin has a bright future regardless of what happens tomorrow.

The folks that are convinced her actions were illegal are the same that would have screamed at her for doing nothing about the abuse this trooper inflicted.
I’m surprised this bit of news wasn’t sat on until 5 November. Still it is good news!

No, the Governor’s image is tarnished by the fact that she doesn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is, doesn’t know that the First Amendment guarantees a free press, doesn’t know that the VP is NOT “in charge of the Senate”, doesn’t know who the Prime Minister of Canada is, doesn’t know that there ISN’T a Prime Minister of Quebec, doesn’t know any examples of John McCain pushing for government regulation, doesn’t read any newpapers or magazines, and overall simply doesnt know what she’s doing.
But she’s folksy, and that means something to you here.
But know this: SHE IS WHY YOU LOST.
In fact, instead of Diversity Training, someone should put together Palin Firing Training and managers should be required to attend it so they can learn how to get rid of bad employees. This way they can prevent lousy employees from making their ways thru the ranks and ruining good businesses.

But of course, none of that matters because, as Sarah has said, the firing had nothing to do with any untoward pressure put on Monegan to fire Wooten. It was because he took a trip to DC.

I’d rather have Palin get some on the job training than have Biden that we know is good for 30 years of nothing in the Senate. Biden is consitently wrong on his foreign policy positions and can’t seem to keep his feet out of his mouth. He offers no hope of change, which is what your supposed to be all about.

Sarah’s interpretation is entirely valid according to the Constitution, which is all that matters, not a website that can reflect the view of the party in power. If a candidate came out TONIGHT and was able to get on the ballot, with only an illegal immigration platform, that candidate would win also.

I had several problems with the Branchflower report from day one:
1) Somehow the Legislature’s investigators were able to devine the motives of Sarah Palin when she removed Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety. Either they were able to read her mind, or they made an assumption about her motives based on what they, themselves, would have done in her situation.
2) If firing Officer Wooten was so important to Gov. Palin and her motive for removing Monegan, wouldn’t she have made darn sure that the new Commissioner would fire Wooten before she appointed him? If so, why does he still have his job?
3) If she had remained silent about her ex-brother-in-law’s behavior (his death threats, hunting violations, tasing of a child, etc.), wouldn’t her politically motivated enemies be claiming just the opposite of what they are saying now? Wouldn’t they be accusing Gov. Palin of covering up Officer’s Wooten’s misdeeds and allowing a rogue cop to remain on the job because of favortism and because she wanted to avoid embarassment to her family and her political career?
The bottom line is, they would have found fault with her no matter how she had responded in this situation. That is how the Left operates.
