Thousands more Syrian troops deployed on Lebanon border

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 3, 2008 06:04 AM

The Jerusalem Post reports this morning:

Syria has mobilized some 3,000 troops and heavy equipment near its border with eastern Lebanon, Beirut’s As-Safir newspaper reported over the weekend.

The troop movement is being carried out under the banner of a bid to stop illegal smuggling and cross-border criminal movement, but Middle East analysts are viewing it as a signal from Syria that it intends to return Lebanon to its sphere of influence.

The troop movement could also form part of a response by Syria to the threat posed by Lebanon-based jihadis, although this seems less likely in light of the widespread view that Syria has backed a number of jihadi groups in Lebanon.

If Syria is waiting for an Obama win to make a move, that might not be smart. Israel can pretty much assume that it is on it’s own if Obama were to win. It will get no help from an Obama administration. So with an Obama win, Israel is more likely to take matters into it’s own hands and shrug off any protestations from Obama. So, in reality, Syria should be dreading an Obama win.

Ironically, given Iran’s statements about wiping things off the map, Israel is the only country there that has the ability to wipe another off the map. If Israel feels backed into a corner, and knows it can’t count of Obama for anything besides abandonment, things could get very messy for Syria and Iran.

You clearly know NOTHING about aviation. Or do and just choose to ignore it.

#1 Engine Failure. In av gas driven engines, lots of things can go wrong that are difficult to impossible to diagnose after the incident. Ever hear of contaminated fuel? carb ice? or vapor lock?

#2 Military planes will often fly low during training. Sometimes obstacles in an area are unknown. It happens, though could have been his error. Hard to say. Todays procedures are much better than they were in the 60’s.

#3 His engine flamed out. Unless you think he maintained his own jet, it wasn’t his fault.

#4 Someone shot an AIM on the deck of the carrier that hit McCain’s A4.

#5 He got shot down, like a lot of other pilots, by a SAM.

Was he the best pilot we ever saw. Probably not. Bad luck? hell yeah. He put in a lot of hours. The more you fly, the more weird sh#t happens. I’ve lost engines in my airplanes twice. It’s not whether you experience that… it’s what you do when it happens that counts.

Phew! LGM, have some consideration – open a window or light a candle when you post like that in here!

You know as well as the rest of us, that the world – especially the Middle East – is getting prep’d for a militarily non-responsive America under a President Obama; Biden as much as said that would be U.S. foreign policy.

A President Obama would be dangerous to peace and mean the destabilization of the entire mid-eastern region, erasing what has taken decades of negotiation and cost the U.S. dearly in terms of lives lost and treasure, as rogue nations and terrorist groups will be free to invade and overthrow wherever and whenever they please.

Obama is too inexperienced to be Commander-in-Chief, and America’s enemies know it! Too bad you don’t.

That may be true, but let’s face facts, when it comes to Israeli external security, the Defense Minister is the “sexy” position. That’s why PM’s like Ariel Sharon insisted on keeping both portfolios. When the rubber meets the road, Ehud Barak will be in charge and I suspect will do what he’s gotta to keep Israel secure.

Obama did exactly the same thing as McCain on the subprime thing.

I agree to a point, however, President McCain has the leadership and experience to know that less is more, in deciding which approach to employ in dealing with an ailing economy

    Obama doesn’t have this experience.

He will use an interventionist/hands-on strategy that will worsen the scope of the economy’s downturn, impacting the elderly and poor with higher prices on fuel, food and energy, and will tax away jobs and prosperty from the middle class with his 95% “tax cut.”

Obama’s policies will expand the time, impact and duration of the economy’s current downturn and will delay its recovery by years!

President McCain’s experience will guide him to lessen the downturn’s impact for those who may suffer the most – the poor and the elderly – by keeping in place policies that will neither increase costs nor unemployment (no tax increases!), and will work to keep America’s economy strong through energy independence. Obama is wrong on the economy, and wrong for Americans.

Flyoverman, ditto here. My fear, like that of others, is that Israel wouldn’t do a pre-emptive strike. I think they will, they certainly have before. Without their willingness to defend their borders, the world would be in much more danger.

O/T, but as I heard a lib describe it, an “athletic” government, as opposed to a “passive” one. Guess that explains why Obama is seen working out at the gym so much these days. :)

McCain was a reckless pilot. Read Tom Wolfe’s book The Right Stuff to find out how crashes get attributed to “engine failure”.

lgm, NJ-Aviator has demonstrated that he knows much more on the subject than you do. You should know when to quit. A link to a liberal blog and a reference to a book with an implication that engines never fail is reaching, even for you.

Isn’t it amazing how libs dismissed everything Powell said while he was Secretary of State, but now that he has admitted to lying to the U.N., they think his endorsement is sacrosanct? If Powell presented information that he believed was false to the U.N., then this man has no integrity and his endorsement is useless.

McCain “suspended his campaign”, not Obama. McCain first indicated he would accept the bailout, then he scuttled the agreement. The result was a huge amount of pork added to “help” McCain Republicans vote for it.

In other words, McCain bungled. His bungling was responsible for a delay in the bailout during which over a trillion dollars were lost on the stock market.

Maybe you don’t support the bailout, maybe you do. The problem is that McCain went back and forth.

Still voting third party? I don’t mean this in a snarky way. You seem to have a thorough grasp on why Obama shouldn’t become the next POTUS. Just curious if your position has changed.

Taken in the appropriate manner (as opposed to “snarky”.) :) I’ve sent in my absentee ballot with a third-party write-in, Alan Keyes. With regards to national security/foreign policy, neither major-party candidate seems to have a solid vision for this country nor perspective as to how to defeat this enemy. Obama is hopelessly clueless. That’s been well established. McCain, however, isn’t much better. Yes, he has military experience, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he has a great military mind. I’m at work at the moment, but if you’d like to read more about my position on this topic, I’ve written more on Hotair.

    OK, lets play a game:

Looking at this from a conservatives’ eyes: We have a stated enemy threatening to invade a strategic (potential) ally. Our theory would be to let them move across the border and then use the rapid deployment force from the huge proving ground just to the east to destroy lines of supply and communication. Then, we cut them to pieces with air power thus defeating our enemy and ensuring the Lebanese the opportunity to create a future without being controlled by Islamist fascists.

Looking at it from a Liberal’s point of view: Eeeeeew.. we have somehow upset the Syrians. We must demonize and destroy our own culture to show these good at heart people our commitment to multiculturalism and open mindedness. What did we do to the people to upset them. It must be our fault. Apparently, we didn’t get our message across! Hmmmmm, maybe if we bought them an nice chai teal latte (decaf) and talked this whole thing through, they would leave Israel and Lebanon alone and we could all go back to our favourite (notice the Brit spelling – that would be mandatory) pastime of stealing money from those greedy hate mongers that worked for it!

    Your choice.
