Election Day: America votes
So, will Michelle Obama be calling our country “downright mean” again at the end of the night? Or will she and The One get the chance to “transform” the constitution, the military, the schools, and every other aspect of American life in their image?
Toledo police are gearing up — literally — with gas masks and helmets.
Let me know what turnout looks like in your neck of the woods.
And let me know what local, county, and state races and measures matter most to you.
Some of the down ticket action I’ll be tracking throughout the day (I’ll be adding to the list):
* Murtha/Russell, 12th congressional district, Pa. I belive in miracles.
*Barletta/Kanjorski, 11th CD, Pa. Lou Barletta is the staunch opponent of illegal immigration and mayor of Hazleton. He’s one of the few House GOP candidates poised to take a seat away from a sitting Democrat.
*Franken/Coleman, Minn. Senate. Three scary-as-hell words: Senator Al Franken.
*Washington gubernatorial race. A Dino Rossi-Christine Gregoire rematch. It was razor-thin last time. GOP candidate Rossi is a rock-solid conservative with broad appeal. Watch Sound Politics.
*Senate races by bailout vote.
*Races noted by See-Dubya: Lt. Col Allen West in Florida and Keith Fimian in Northern Virginia.
*Ward Connerly’s anti-racial preference measures in Colorado and Nebraska. Both likely to pass, as they have every single time they’ve made it onto the ballot.
*Prop. 8, the marriage protection initiative in California, and two other marriage measures in Arizona and Florida.
*T. Boone Pickens’ Big Wind boondoggle initiative in Cali.
*Via NR, life and tax measures:
The culture of life is on the ballot in five states. California, Colorado, and South Dakota have the opportunity to limit abortion rights. An initiative in Michigan would permit the destruction of human embryos in scientific research and allow state funding for it. This vote will test the strength of the pro-life movement in a state that is home to many culturally conservative Democrats. Finally, the state of Washington will consider following in the footsteps of its neighbor to the south, Oregon, legalizing euthanasia.
Massachusetts will decide whether to phase out the state’s personal income tax. Voters in Arizona, Florida, Maine, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Oregon also will have a chance to limit or lower their taxes. Coloradoans will ponder raising their state sales tax to provide more services to the disabled. Minnesotans also will have a chance to increase their sales taxes so that the state government can spend more on parks and the arts. Although Minnesotans love the outdoors, taxpayer groups point out that St. Paul already has underwritten such public artworks as sculpture popularly known as “The Big Poo.” Simple disgust may compel enough voters to flush down this tax hike.

I wonder if you’ll be the only one with the courage to admit faults.
The fact that he’s comfortable around these type people is what disturbs me. I’ve heard that a president brings with him to his administration about 3000 appointees, from cabinet secretaries to low level aides.
bvw, I agree. BO uses a lot of Hitler like tactics. Hitler was elected as well, and many jews did not think he would exterminate them, they were after all Germans. Hitler was a socialist, a vegetarian, non smoker who wanted a healthy Arian race, wanted GErmans to stop smoking, he also built bridges, roads, etc., for the people. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t the VW the people’s car during Hitler’s reign? No wonder so many libs love that car. Hitler had his SS, brown shirts. BO wants I guess the black or maybe green shirts, since he knows the military won’t be behind him so he needs his own force. this is also similar to the end of the Roman empire when the emperors had their guard (the pretorians) and the army was often opposed to that guard and they competed and fought each other.
Yeah, because that is what it is all about for you, isn’t it? Not what is best for America, but revenge. It speaks volumes about your own agenda.

OK folks, off to vote now in CA. McCain/Palin vote may be a moot cause, but I’m voting for the marriage amendment as well as against the Pickens idiotic plan, which I believe will go down in history today.
I live in Sam Johnson’s district in Plano, which is about as red as it gets. Birds were yappin, dogs were crappin and everyone was singing Cumbaya. No intimidation. No angry college professors. You really couldn’t tell that the new president was about to launch a full-bore assault on private industry and enterprise. I miss the old days already.

I just read the “Obama is Toast” piece and I have to say I am much more encouraged. It was kind of conspicuous that Obama made a stop in Iowa and revisited several other states that the press and pollsters wanted us to believe Obama had locked in.

Voted for McCain/Palin at Pilot Knob City Hall (MO) before work this morning. Only one guy ahead of me; gave myself extra time I didn’t need.
I plan to settle in tonight after work and watch history be made, one way or the other (hoping, of course, for our first woman Veep).

Already had one argument at noontime with a young Jewess who voted for Obama — I told her I had lost a few friends to his buddies in Hamas and Hizbollah and did NOT want to lose any more. There is a blindness folks develop — I’ve seen car accidents happen the same way — the driver gets distracted, looking the wrong way, driving as if everything is perfectly fine and right through a red light — baboom!
Ditto for me! I voted this morning. Just a few people in line.

I forgot to add one more item I voted for in CA. The 48 hour parental notification on abortions performed on minors — voted YES.

Well, I voted for McCain wearing my red shirt. In Northern San Diego county I was able to get in and get out in about 10 minutes.
What is important to me was Prop 8 defining marriage between a man & a woman – I voted yes. As well as Prop 4 limiting abortion rights.
I voted no on any bonds, as if California needs any more debt.

Dont try to save the world and arrest everybody for every crime you see happening in front of you. It sounds ridiculous, but it turns chaotic so fast that its almost unbelievable and definitely uncontrollable.
Once two of you grab a guy or two for breaking windows of businesses or looting, you know how long you are down for. Its safe time for you, but when all of the police do it at the same time, you end up leaving the rest of your colleagues out there physically fighting for their life.
When they rushed these busineses, there were hundreds. Taking one or two of them out of that type of crowd accomplishes nothing. Sad but true.
It will start with the hollering and guns shots, then the cars start flipping, the store windows start breaking, loads are running everywhere destroying the stores and carrying out everything they can get their hands on, and then the fires start everywhere you turn.
And the more physical you get with them, the more physical they get with you. Its all they know, and only we know that. Its the truth the world doesn’t want to hear. We know its hard to look the other way, but try and pick your battles wisely to the best you can.
As bad as it was during the Bulls riots, times are worse — today everybody is carrying a gun. Good luck to all. Take care of you.
I’ve already voted by mail in CA but aside from my symbolic vote for mccain/PALIN, I voted Yes on Props 4 and 8, and a big Hells No on Prop 7.

No vote is ever symbolic. Even in a losing cause you have to vote to register your dissent to the majority. If you do not, the numbers are skewed, a “false” landslide can occur and those eleced have the illusion of a mandate they really do not have.
In theory McCain trails by 14 points in my state. I voted anyway. At least they know I dissent.
Your vote ALWAYS counts.
Voted at 3:45. There was no one there. It took me longer to park the car and walk into the school than it did to vote. So since I left work early and got out so fast, I decided to go to my local bar.
When people asked who I voted for I said “Ralph Nader, becasue I want my vote to count!”

There will be no checks on The One, only 2 of the following- Snowe, Collins, Specter, or Graham ( might almost include McCain on that list, but hopefully the love not shown by the Dems has given him a spine) have to join in to shut down the filibuster. Also means they can punish Lieberman for being a loyal American and strip him of all his committee assignments. They can take a chance on him caucusing with the Republicans and still be pretty confident on any cloture vote.

Obama may win Pennsylvania, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be double digits. I suspect most of the exit polls were in/near PHL.

Gawd knows I’ve criticized Obama on this board. Chap is right, and I’ve made similar statements about Obama’s calculating approach in the past. I wish he was more experienced. He certainly has flipflopped on some issues this summer for political gain. I’ll stop there. He’s a politician. All elections are about the lesser of two evils for me. All politicians are shady.
That said, I’ve given Obama $ and volunteered my butt off so my jerk can get in the Whitehouse, and do less damage than your jerk and jerkette would.

At my polling place here in San Jose Ca. turn out has been light but steady according to the poll workers.
I just walked in and voted, no lines. Yes on 4 and 8 and Palin and the old guy. Funny thing around my area is that there is very few Obama bumper stickers. In 04 there was tons of Kerry stickers. There are no MacCain stickers because that would get your windows broken or your car painted.
My county, Chesterfield County, VA is one of the first counties to tally up this evening. McCain with 54% of the vote here. I was worried.
Turnout was big at my polling place in Dayton, OH. From what I hear, it’s heavy across Montgomery County.
I think heavy turnout is going to further invalidate the polls. Usually their models are based on who will show up and who will stay home, and how each demographic is weighted in the statistical analysis. If EVERYONE votes, though, that’s going to negatively affect any interpretation you could give to a small sample size.

I live in deepest blue yuppieville Park Slope, Brooklyn. This morning, the line was crazy, so I went to work.
My wife said there were no lines when she passed around lunch time, and when I got there about 6 p.m., I walked right in and voted.
In St Louis, the usual generic “I voted” sticker was replaced by a round blue border thing with Obama’s red crescents; looked just like his logo. It said “Proud City, Proud Voter”.
I was not about to put that crap on.

Doug, I live in Chester, and knew one person in my county voting for Obama. I took my kids for haircuts this afternoon since they were off, and the ladies in the shop, who are usually mum about politics, were on fire! They were furious about all the national news reports about intimidation and shenanigans and some of the local stuff they saw — like known illegals voting by showing a utility bill! And, every person in that shop was for McCain/Palin!

As much as I’d like to, I can’t take credit for finding the Obama is Toat piece, that credit belongs to ITooktheRedPill. Good find by him, and I know what you mean about hari-kari. I’m feeling a lot more confident than I was this time yesterday.
