New national anthem: “My president is black”
There is a new national slogan/anthem catching on among America’s youth. It’s a popular rap song, a t-shirt, and a taunting chant.
It is this: “MY PRESIDENT IS BLACK.”
Go ahead and Google it. They’re blasting it on the streets of Chicago, saying it like a prayer in Durham, singing it on campus, and putting it on their kids’ clothes in Harlem.
Scenes like this were repeated across the country after Election Day:
Outside, cars drove across campus, honking triumphal horns as passengers leaned out windows heralding the news of Obama’s unprecedented win. Students giddily repeated the refrain, “My president is black.”

You couldn’t find a single copy of the Chicago Tribune or Chicago Sun-Times on newsstands or in boxes anywhere in the city, from Hyde Park up to Evanston. And at least two tricked-out cars on shiny rims that rolled slowly down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood on the city’s gritty South Side were blasting what appeared to be the city’s new unofficial hip-hop presidential anthem: Young Jeezy’s “My President Is Black.”

The energy around Benedict’s campus was palpable Wednesday, as students walking to and from classes excitedly discussed the election, some shouting “President Obama!” and singing lyrics to a popular song about Obama by the rapper Young Jeezy, “My President is Black.”

My senior at an upscale Cobb County Georgia (Newt’s old district) high school came home today in tears. Every black student at this school, where race isn’t usually an indicator of whether or not the teens are friends…they all get along and are for the most part, almost all college bound… was wearing their Obama t-shirts today. Many of them said, “My president is BLACK.” Many had Obama’s head printed on cardboard and waved them through the halls taunting the white kids with, “McCain sucks” and “F– McCain.”
Anyone who’d previously professed support for McCain is being taunted with “racist.”
My daughter asked the assistant principal what would happen if she came to school tomorrow with a t-shirt that said, “My president is white” on it. The answer was something like, “I’m with you, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Obama supporter and rapper Young Jeezy, who worked the phone banks for his candidate before Election Day, penned “My President Is Black” in time for the Democrat convention in August and invoked it after Obama’s victory. Here’s the video (language warning/not safe for work):

Barack Obama’s ascent was supposed to heal the racial divide. It’s having the opposite effect in some parts of the country.
Perhaps poet Maya Angelou will include them in her next meditation on the “president of the bigots.”

My daughter is in the 8th grade at a small Christian school with a mostly African-American student body. We are white and conservative.
She did not want to go to school yesterday because she knew what would be said and that she and the other students who supported McCain would be taunted. They were taunted directly by some of the students while others were just happy that Obama won and expressed that view. I don’t have a problem with the latter and neither did she. However, I really, really need to call the Mom of one of the students (African-American) who took the time to ask her if she was okay and able to take the taunts and to tell her that he understood that she might be upset about McCain’s loss and the taunting being directed her way. She needs to know that her son was a true gentlemen and good winner yesterday and that it meant a lot to my daughter.

Reminds me of an old joke about a fired baseball mananger:

A WHITE candidate with Obama’s thin resume (no background, no experience, no qualfications) would have been laughed out of the first state primary.

Yesterday I was checking out the exit polls on California Proposition 8 – the anti gay marriage constitution amendment. You might not realise it but Prop 8 was passed exactly because black women were overwhelmingly against it.
Latino and white voters were split on prop 8. Not black women. They were dead set against it, and one would assume that would extend to black males would be also.
I say specificly black women because according to this chart, at least in California, there are a paucity of eligible black male voters, not enough to make a statistic.
Why would that be the case? I know there are black males in California, see them everyday, but apparently there are not enough to show up in a voting chart broken down by race and sex.
Is this because ex-felons can’t vote in California? What else could it be?
