Memo to McCain blabbermouths: Character is destiny
My syndicated column today takes on the cowardly character assassins in the McCain campaign who are trying to kneecap Sarah Palin. More than 10,000 people signed the petition yesterday expressing thanks to Sarah Palin for stepping up to the plate. (I had to close it off due to liberal hate trolls indulging their PDS. Their comments will be deleted.) I’ll print off the petition and send the whole thing off to the Alaska Governor’s office. The question now is whether John McCain — proud author of books on character and courage, honor and duty — will just sit on the sidelines and let this debacle continue or stand up and defend the running mate he chose.

Sunken ships loosen bitter lips. The failed McCain campaign, for all its high-minded talk of honor, duty, and courage, is now teeming with unscrupulous gossip-mongers. Seems the dishy staffers forgot to crack open their copies of Sen. McCain’s best-seller, Character Is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Every Adult Should Remember. Rest assured: Their cowardly character assassination of Sarah Palin won’t be forgotten.
The finks turned to Newsweek and Fox News to spread petty rumors about Sarah Palin’s intellect and character. The magazine peddled anecdotes from sources horrified that Palin greeted top advisers at her hotel room – gasp! — “wearing nothing but a towel” and “wet hair.” Fox News reporter Carl Cameron breathlessly reported that his unnamed McCain sources told him Palin lacked “a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate” because, they claimed, she didn’t know which countries were parties to the North American Free Trade Agreement and “didn’t understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series, a country just in itself.”
Let’s assume for a moment that the McCain rumor-mongers are telling the truth about Palin (and I don’t believe they were). Who would it damn more: Sarah Palin or McCain and his vetters who green-lighted her for the vice presidential nomination? Don’t need a fancy Ivy League degree to figure that one out.
In introducing her to America, John McCain praised her independence and backbone: She “stands up for what’s right and she doesn’t let anyone tell her to sit down.” The inside snipers are now roasting her for that very attribute – redefined as “going rogue” – because she had the nerve to try and schedule media interviews on her own. The nerve of her!
Palin’s response to the campaign fragging? At a late Wednesday night airport press conference in Anchorage, immediately upon landing home after the election defeat, she smiled cheerfully. The Alaska governor shrugged off the McCain saboteurs saying “foolish things” and said simply: “It’s politics…It’s rough and tumble and you’ve got to have a thick skin just like I’ve got.”
Hollywood savaged Sarah Palin. Journalists mocked her. Liberal blogs slimed her. Opponents cursed her, Photoshopped her, hacked her e-mail, hanged her in effigy, called her a bigot, Bible-thumper, and bimbo, and attacked her husband and children. But nothing Sarah Palin endured during the election season compares to the treatment she’s receiving from these back-stabbing blabbermouths who worked on the same campaign she poured herself into the last three months.
Sarah Palin worked her heart out. She energized tens of thousands to come out who would have otherwise stayed home. She touched countless families. I didn’t agree with everything she said on the campaign trail. But she vigorously defended the Second Amendment and the sanctity of life more eloquently in practice than any of the educated conservative aristocracy. And she did it all with a tirelessness and infectious optimism that defied the shameless, bottomless attempts by elites in both parties to bring her and her family down.
Liberty needs a virtuous people to survive; self-governance requires virtuous leaders.
“Knowledgeability” is a necessary trait in political life, but it is not sufficient. The elitist critics of Sarah Palin, so blindly enamored of Barack Obama’s ability to hold forth for hours on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, ignored the Founding Fathers’ counsel: Character counts. In times of adversity and crisis, it counts more than IQ points and instant trivia recall and bloviation skills.
“The most important thing I have learned, from my parents, from teachers, from my faith, from many good people I have been blessed to know, and from the lives of people whose stories we have included in this book,” John McCain wrote in Character is Destiny, “is to want what they had, integrity, and to feel the sting of my conscience when I have risked it for some selfish reason.”
John McCain not only failed to make that message stick with the electorate, he apparently couldn’t persuade his own staff to heed his advice and practice what he preached.

My great fear-
There are still a couple of Senate races not decided, Coleman, for example, and the more recounts and more time the DNC’s lawyers have, the better the chance that they can give it to Franken.
The GOP has only a couple of votes to spare on holding the filibuster on the most important toxins Pelosi and Obama will try to pass.
There are three major RINOs, Lindsay, although not as big a RINO as either of Maine’s two women senators.
Obama is rumored to be offering Homeland Security to Collins. If she goes, Governor Baldacci can fill her seat with a Democrat. The other Senator, Olympia Snowe, got into politics serving out her Republican husbands term in the state senate when he died, and has always been very unreliable. Either could decide they’d like a committee chair, and decide to caucus with the Democrats. Then you’d be in a situation that any one of the remaining RINOs, or at least Republican-Lite, like Graham, McCain or Specter can decide not to support a filibuster, and it is all over.
According to Senator Kyl, (On Hugh Hewitt) if the Republicans don’t have the number to block cloture, they can slow, but not stop, any Marxist legislation moving through the Senate, through procedural rules. Things like requesting bills being brought to the floor be read for the entire chamber. He says it will take legislation that could clear the Senate in 1 or 2 days, and make it take 2 or 3 days. But it can’t stop it.
Even with 41 votes to maintain a filibuster, there is the ‘nuclear option’ discussed when the Dems were filibustering Republican judges that could be used to end a filibuster without cloture.

The parties would be reversed, of course:
The Senate moves to vote on a controversial nominee (Ed- or legislation).
At least 41 Senators call for filibuster.
Majority Leader Frist raises a point of order, saying debate has gone on long enough and that a vote must be taken within a certain time frame. (Current Senate rules requires a cloture vote at this point.)
Vice President Cheney — acting as presiding officer — sustains the point of order.
A Democratic Senator appeals the decision.
A Republican Senator moves to table the motion on the floor (the appeal).
This vote – to table the appeal – is procedural and cannot be subjected to a filibuster; it requires only a majority vote (in case of a tie, the Vice President casts the tie-breaking vote).
With debate ended, the Senate would vote on the nominee; this vote requires only a majority of those voting. The filibuster has effectively been closed with a majority vote instead of a three-fifths vote.
So, it is far from a certain deal that the Senate minority can do more than slow down Marxist poison being passed as law, especially if a Senator jumps caucus or accepts a position in the Obama administration and allows a Dem governor to fill her seat.
Two observations.
1. If these people bashing Palin are telling the truth, then they would have no problem attaching their names to their statements and defending them.
2. The McCain camp was RINO to begin with, and has abandoned Reagan’s eleventh commandment. Their lack of integrity diminishes their message.
Palin may be damaged goods because of McCain and I don’t know if she’d get my vote over Jindal, but I’ll be damn glad to see her put her hat in the ring.

I think you missed his point. He wasn’t saying “don’t put these people down”, he was specifically lamenting the racist manner in which it was done. We are supposed to be better than that.
Reverend Wright is a terrible person because he’s a racist, America-hating demogogue. Not because he’s black. Illegal aliens are bad because they flout our laws, endanger our national security and distort our economy, not because they’re Mexican (or whatever).
Issues and character are what matter, and we hold the high ground on both, usually. We should leave race out of it.

McCain was not running as a Social Conservative at all – he was running as a reach-around, oops , I mean “reach-across” bipartisan moderate maverick. People voted against the past 8 years of mush and McCain’s promise of 4 more years of similar mush.
The referendum was on Bush’s “Big Government” agenda, and the GOP’s return to Rockefeller Big Spending.

Conservatives are still 10% more than liberals in terms of voter self identification (34% Conservative 44% Moderate and 22% Liberal).

How did Prop 8 pass in California if social conservatism is what is holding Republicans down?
Those people taking cheap shots a Palin, claiming that she damaged the ticket were not at the McCain/Palin ralley in Ashville, NC, a few weeks ago (an extremely liberal city).
My wife and I got there 3 hours early. There were already thousands in line. We stood in line for 4 hours and didn’t even make it into the convention center, we were diverted into an overflow auditorium. There were thousands behind us in line who did not get in at all.
Was this to see John McCain? Absolutely not! He was never our choice. We were there to see Sarah Palin, and so was everyone else there!
We voted for McCain only because the only alternative was Barak Obama. The only thing that got us remotely interested in the Republican ticket this election was Sarah Palin. If it were not for her, the Republican party this time around would not have even gotten the time of day from us.
Those trying to stab her in the back now are only showing how low class they are themselves.

The Republicans have already lost the election of 2012. Obama can be a complete disaster and the Republican establishment will do the work for Obama. The Republican nominee will once again be an old time establishment candidate who fits in well down at the yacht basin. Most likely it will be Mitt Romney (let’s recall Mitt’s priceless “Who Let the Dogs out” video). If you haven’t seen it, just go to youtube and see why Mitt can’t win.
The Republican establishment will never allow a candidate like JC Watts or Bobby Jindal be the candidate. It just won’t happen. Either one of these guys could win in both the burbs and in rural areas and both would do well in urban areas. But the Republican establishment always goes for the county club candidate (Recall that the Republican establishment never wanted Reagan. He did not have an Ivy League pedigree and the establishment fought Reagan tooth and nail).
When I saw the Republican National Committee designated Frank Farenkoph to handle debate negotiations, I knew all was lost. He stood for everything Republicans should not be: Gambling industry lobbyist, K Street all the way, a lifetime inside the Washington cocoon.
In 2012, expect Obama to win in 46 states Romney to win in 4.
Because of course, we must have a conservative candidate that can act “black”. Just give up and give in.

They are personal questions, and I would think that people being asked those questions would respond with: “That’s nobody’s business but mine!”

I took part in a Roman Catholic exorcism about 30 years ago. Not at all the stuff of movies, so knock off the concerns. It’s no big deal. You wouldn’t know a true exorcism if it was in your own home. it is never done in public… so any information you have on it is third hand spoken at best. Jindahl isn’t even close to being a national candidate… we have bigger fish to fry….

Capt, I’m glad McCain lost. As has been said many times, he definitely was NOT the future of the conservative movement (notice how I didn’t say “Republican party”). The RINOs and posers will eventually join the Dems. They don’t care about family values, fiscal conservatism, or national defense. So why are they still Rs? I think it is more of a selfish motive. As another poster said, for John McCain “Country First” was just a slogan. I think for him it was truly “McCain first,” and perhaps that is always how he has lived. He is remorseful about how he treated his first wife, but I think it’s a symptom of his attitude.
Palin, Jindal, Steele: If you’re reading this blog, your supporters are eager for you to LEAD us into a viable 3rd party!

I emailed SHEP SMITH and CARL CAMERON at FOX and gave them a ration about their breathless savoring of the McCain Republocrats’ nasty, demeaning gossip about Palin.
Both of them are beneath contempt, and I think their being employed at CNN would be a much better fit.

Its fine for you to criticize Reverend Wright. He is a racist. But it isn’t worthy of a conservative to attribute his racism to his race. Ironic but true. He didn’t choose his race but he did choose to live his culture and he did choose to say the things he said. Criticize his culture, criticize his words and actions and choices but do not criticize his race.

SoCal Black liberation theology and all of that is racism and it comes out of peoples culture and values not from the DNA that controls their pigment. By saying that it comes from their pigment you are basically saying that they will never change. You really will be ineffective in your conservatism until you can base your objections to racism of any sort to peoples choices and values and not their pigment. In fact you will bring scandal on conservatism by such a mindset.

As to the blabbermouths, it is evident to me that even Republicans (the party elitists?) fear a Palin national prominence/presence. Not unlike Ronald Reagan, Gov. Palin has a charm, charisma, personality and an energy about her that could wrest the party and its conservative base away from the staid party leaders, those who, by the way, have lost the past two elections.
(Hey, even in Pittsburgh, the owners of the Pirates get tired of fielding losing teams for 15 straight years. The top executives were replaced last year with the intent of turning the franchise around and bringing a consistent winner to the best city and the best baseball park.)
