Ohio government snooper put on leave for plumbing Plumber’s records

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 7, 2008 05:49 PM

Well, it sure took them long enough, didn’t it?

Via Dayton Daily News (which you’ll notice fails to mention that Jones-Kelley is a max contributor to Obama’s campaign):

Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and former head of that department in Montgomery County, has been placed on paid administrative leave by Gov. Ted Strickland.

Strickland said on Friday, Nov. 7, that he took the action “due to the possibility, as yet unconfirmed, that a state computer or state e-mail account was used to assist in political fund raising.”

“I have asked Inspector General Tom Charles to include this matter in his current, ongoing investigation,” Strickland said in a press release.

Strickland said he has asked Jan Allen, his cabinet secretary, to serve as acting director of the agency.

Charles already was investigating reports that a department computer was used to gather personal information about “Joe the Plumber” — Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher of suburban Toledo — after Wurzelbacher emerged as a key figure in the presidential race in Ohio. The information included whether he owed child support, which he said he didn’t.

You can run, lady, but you can’t hide.

The
Columbus Dispatch
is on the ball, as it has been from the beginning:

Gov. Ted Strickland has placed the director of the Department of Job and Family Services on paid leave for possibly using a state computer and e-mail account for political fund raising.

The governor took the action against Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the state agency, late this afternoon.

Strickland said he asked Inspector General Thomas P. Charles to investigate the matter. He named Jan Allen, secretary of his cabinet, to serve as acting director of Job and Family Services.

The Dispatch filed a public-records request last week that requested any Jones-Kelley e-mails that mentioned Democrat Barack Obama, who won election as president on Tuesday. The newspaper was told it would receive those e-mails shortly.

Jones-Kelley contributed $2,500 this year to the Obama campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Does this sweetie have to sign such a document? If so, what are the legal penalty(ies)? Is she now going to find herself under the bus? If so, she might not like the company she is now keeping. Pity.

    As yet unconfirmed? Which is it? Yet unconfirmed or yet confirmed?

    Huh? An investigation not for invasion of privacy, nor for an illegal investigation without a court warrant, nor unauthorized use of law enforcement assests, nor unauthorized search under color of authority, but for a “possible use of a state computer or state e-mail account!”

    Fast forward one month…”The Office of Inspector General found no evidence of illegal activity by Ms. Jones-Kelley. Her actions were those of a concerned citizen trying to prevent a possible fraud by an Ohio resident. She has done an admirable job in attempting to protect Ohio taxpayers, and she should be commended for her initiative. This office will take no further action on this matter.”

    Kudos to everyone contacting the governor, keeping the conversation going, and in the public eye. The bloggers are the ones responsible for her feeling the consequences of her actions. Even if she hides under her desk for a few months, we’re ahead of the game. She and others will be more careful of their behavior.

    Most likely Civil Service-Cover the Incompetents- Law. Might want to talk to the Government Employees Unions about that. Or it could be the Persons With Disabilities Act-”I am to Stupid to Read the Regulations”.

    If you are following the Norm Coleman-Frankenstein count in Minnesota here is a good one:

    The Gods of the Copybook Headings

    By: Rudyard Kipling

    AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
    I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
    Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

    We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
    That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
    But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
    So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

    We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
    Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
    But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
    That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

    With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
    They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
    They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
    So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

    When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
    They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
    But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”

    On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
    (Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
    Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”

    In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
    By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
    But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”

    Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
    And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
    That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

    As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
    There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
    That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
    And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

    And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
    When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
    As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
    The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

    So there will be no doubt as to Kipling’s meaning here, the Gods of the Market Place is the Government; a “Copybook” is the British equivalent of America’s McGuffey readers; they were used to improve penmanship, as
    English children would copy the heading on each page (which consisted of some wise saying) repeatedly below. The Gods of the Copybook Headings are refering to those wise sayings that are always rising up and smacking us in the proverbial face when we forget their basic truths!
