San Francisco does something right
For the past two years, I’ve covered the war on JROTC in San Francisco (background here).
On Election Day, San Francisco did something right: City voters passed an initiative backed by JROTC cadets to save the program from anti-war zealots on the SF school board.
Unfortunately, it’s not a binding measure. But a majority of voters have spoken. Now, it’s time for those voters to make sure the radicals on the school board listen:
San Francisco, a city largely known for its anti-military reputation and liberal leanings, voted on Nov. 4 to save the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program that is slated to be phased out of the city’s public schools.
Proposition V – the measure in support of keeping the JROTC training program in high schools – passed by 53 percent. However, the ballot measure is not binding and the elective could still be removed from high schools.
Since 2006, JROTC opponents have worked to eliminate this military-backed program arguing it encourages members to discriminate against homosexuals who are banned from openly serving in the military. So the San Francisco Unified School District took action against the program.

Opponents will simply get the Calif. Supreme Court to rule their way. Votes don’t matter to liberals, unless they validate their own positions.
Its non-binding? Then forget it, it never happened.
When the next earthquake hits that area, will they tell the National Guard not to enter the city?
Yeah, pretty much. The will of the people means nada to the left unless it’s their will.
Funny thing is, gays already serve openly in the military. My son was on a carrier some years ago, and said there was a large group of black openly gay sailors that all hung together.
Going to be interestsing to see what reason they have for hating the Military once Barry overturns the Don’t ask Don’t Tell policy.
Hint: Why do people climb Mount Everest?
Good for them!!! Don’t let the libs ruin everything!
Faux paus, or racist? Shades of “Blazing Saddles.”
Lily: “Tell me, Sheh-wif…is it twue what they say about black men?” (Sound of zipper.) “Oh-h-h! It’s twue! It’s twue!” LMAO
Yes, it was good that the JROTC will continue.
There were two other measures voted on in SanFran. One was a bid to name a sewage plant after George W. Bush…. that failed.
I can’t recall the other extremist measure that also sent packing, but it was inline with these two.
At least most people in SanFran have some good sense. The same can not be said for it’s government.
right_on, you need to get a life. That comment wasn’t meant the way you took it and you know it. If I had written “bunked together” would you have liked it better?
San Francisco is pretty much hopeless. I work for the city, and I lived here in SF for 26 years. I moved out in 1999, being tired of endless taxes, stupid laws, and a clueless, “progressive” domination of all levels of city government.
Life is good in the burbs. I’m surrounded by all the other people who have left SF. We really find few reasons to go to SF anymore, as good restaurants, theater, and other amenities have moved to the burbs along with us.
The white middle class is gone from SF. The Asian and Latino immigrant population are the strongest supporters of JROTC; every year 75% of the kids in JROTC are black, Asian, or Hispanic.
But none of this matters to the ideologues on the school board in SF. They MUST make a “statement”. That’s the reason for living to a “progressive”.
This city has a $250,000,000 budget hole for 2009-2010 right now. We have no idea how big it will be by next June 30. SF just elected three more “progressives” to the city council. It will be most amusing to watch them cut scores of city “services” to “the poor” and “the homeless” over the next few months. They can’t raise taxes, as city income taxes and commuter taxes are illegal in California (for now).
California is broke. SF is broke. It’s going to be wonderful to watch the “progressives” decide which “essential” programs are going to get the axe.

It was an attempt at humor, and was evidently lost on you! Your sensitivity to this issue might indicate your closeness to it. Sorry, I’m not a mind-reader. I wasn’t trying to put you on the defensive about a subject that apparently, we can no longer joke.
Thank goodness I have the DVD already. Obummer will prob’ly outlaw it in his first 100 days.
San Francisco

Well, this is nice to see. It reminds me of the say that “a broken clock is still right two times a day”.
They have reasons without that. The military are warmongers and they are peeeeacefull and loving and tolerant, remember?
/sarc
It is only a small victory, considering that 47% of the people voted against it. What a bunch of maroons.
Hey, don’t forget Seattle, Michelle. Liberals in Seattle finally feel proud of America and are buying up flags left and right. Be prepared to puke …

Gutterball MUST be the messiah. Liberals can fly our flag proudly now. Hallelujah!
as soon as “the one” cancels the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and openly welcomes gays in to the military, the folks in SF will promote the JROTC program in the schools
Reason 643 to pull your children out of public re-education centers. Perhaps Shuck and Jive will consider JROTC part of his Mandatory Voluntary Community Service and teach them the Joys of a Little Recreational Homosexuality:
I have retired Old Glory for the Immediate Crisis-would not want to look like a Liberal. “Don’t Tread On Me” will do in the mean time.

That Every Man Be Armed–You Too ladies
It amazes me that a church whose main message is peace and civility is target for retribution and hate mongering from a group that claims all it want is peace and equality.
I believe the school board will choose to discriminate against minorities and females by offing the ROTC. Their attempt to reach around it is to replace it with ethnic studies.
Which is more useful to a child, ROTC or ethnic studies?
Hey, AZNeanderthal! I’m also flying the Gadsden flag.
Since the Fall this has been known, reaffirmed by Jesus Christ Himself.

Well, can you imagine how you would feel if you were gay and were told by JTROC that you wouldn’t be allowed join unlike everyone else in your class? Just think about it.
Trouble is – Americans are for the most part not too bright. They have a complete disconnect between those they elect and their “belief” system.
Ask any Obama voter why they voted for him and it’s not anything they “believe” – it’s personality cult. Ask McCain voters the same and most give similar answers (though often more personality of Palin).
Most regulars on this site are exceptions to that general rule though.
That is the problem – libs “think” with feelings instead of facts.
We honestly don’t give a rip about your feelings Omu. Personally I’d prefer the “feeling” of satisfaction of doing a job well or poorly and reaping the results than the feeling of helplessness and equal misery.
A stopped clock is right twice a day.
In other words, they can’t get it wrong ALL the time.
Make no mistake, they’ll get back to screwing up things soon.
I heard that they also defeated the suicidal renewable energy proposition H which would have had them conducting business by candlelight.
The green meanies are probably very upset with that and will commit a few environmental arson revenges to prove their anger.
I was briefly in NJROTC in high school and wondered if it was still allowed.
It is one of the few classes I can remember, good stuff.
I did not learn to hate gays in that class or any others. However I would have been horrified with them teaching me it was normal and acceptable behavior like they do now.
Personally, I believe what gays do is their business and I think it is a private matter. I understand that some people are attracted to their own gender. Making it a public issue has forced people to take sides on an issue that most people are not affected by.
Keeping your private life, private, is a good idea in general, but in the military the need is pronounced.
What has happened now though is special interests is trumping the rights of the majority to have a differing opinion and trying to criminalize it.
Using the excuse of gay rights being threatened by JROTC programs, or scouting is pathetic.
The whole of California is on my do not visit list, save for the opportunity I get to see President Reagan’s last resting place.
But then, I’m taking a lunch.
Calif. isn’t completely lost…not yet!

Omu, here we go again. Have you ever served in the Armed Forces? I ask because it has an impact on how you think about having gays serve in the military alongside straights.
I served for 22 years. During my time at DaNang AB in Vietnam I ‘bunked’ in one of two rooms with 11 other men and we had one toilet, one sink and one shower to share between us. We were on different schedules with some of us flying the ‘early’ go with a 0245 briefing and 0415 takeoff while others had the ‘late’ go with an 1800 brief and 1930 takeoff. You met yourself coming and going with your days determined by the flying schedule, not when the sun came up or went down. We were constantly on the go with virtually NO privacy. You had to use the toilet, shave and take a shower when you could. More often than not you shared the bathroom with at least one other person, sometimes two and even three when someone was shaving at the sink while someone brushed their teeth (the other two conveniences being occupied by a lone person).
Now, let me introduce a gay person into that scenario. It could be someone who is happily ‘married’ to a life partner who alleges they are not going to have wandering eyes — or affections. Do you think they would ‘look’ given the opportunity? I daresay, they would. How does that make the straight person feel? Pretty uncomfortable, wouldn’t you think.
If you say that it shouldn’t or wouldn’t, then you should agree it is OK to bunk a married heterosexual male in a room full of females. If he states he is happily married and won’t have wandering eyes, then none of the women should feel uncomfortable being looked upon by someone of the opposite sex who is a practicing heterosexual, should they?
Granted, JROTC is just an introductory class in HS. It doesn’t involve being deployed and living under less than ideal conditions. However, like the thread we were both involved with re. Prop 8, it starts us down a slippery slope. Let the camel’s nose under the tent in a peacetime military (or a peacetime arm of the military) and then it will be applicable across the board.
Perhaps one of those females sharing a room with that straight male could be one of your own daughters. How would that strike you? I know it wouldn’t pass muster in my household!
The legalization of prostitution lost by a 58-42 margin.
