San Francisco does something right

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 7, 2008 12:06 PM

For the past two years, I’ve covered the war on JROTC in San Francisco (background here).

On Election Day, San Francisco did something right: City voters passed an initiative backed by JROTC cadets to save the program from anti-war zealots on the SF school board.

Unfortunately, it’s not a binding measure. But a majority of voters have spoken. Now, it’s time for those voters to make sure the radicals on the school board listen:

San Francisco, a city largely known for its anti-military reputation and liberal leanings, voted on Nov. 4 to save the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program that is slated to be phased out of the city’s public schools.

Proposition V – the measure in support of keeping the JROTC training program in high schools – passed by 53 percent. However, the ballot measure is not binding and the elective could still be removed from high schools.

Since 2006, JROTC opponents have worked to eliminate this military-backed program arguing it encourages members to discriminate against homosexuals who are banned from openly serving in the military. So the San Francisco Unified School District took action against the program.

Yeah, pretty much. The will of the people means nada to the left unless it’s their will.

Yes, it was good that the JROTC will continue.

There were two other measures voted on in SanFran. One was a bid to name a sewage plant after George W. Bush…. that failed.

I can’t recall the other extremist measure that also sent packing, but it was inline with these two.

At least most people in SanFran have some good sense. The same can not be said for it’s government.

San Francisco is pretty much hopeless. I work for the city, and I lived here in SF for 26 years. I moved out in 1999, being tired of endless taxes, stupid laws, and a clueless, “progressive” domination of all levels of city government.

Life is good in the burbs. I’m surrounded by all the other people who have left SF. We really find few reasons to go to SF anymore, as good restaurants, theater, and other amenities have moved to the burbs along with us.

The white middle class is gone from SF. The Asian and Latino immigrant population are the strongest supporters of JROTC; every year 75% of the kids in JROTC are black, Asian, or Hispanic.

But none of this matters to the ideologues on the school board in SF. They MUST make a “statement”. That’s the reason for living to a “progressive”.

This city has a $250,000,000 budget hole for 2009-2010 right now. We have no idea how big it will be by next June 30. SF just elected three more “progressives” to the city council. It will be most amusing to watch them cut scores of city “services” to “the poor” and “the homeless” over the next few months. They can’t raise taxes, as city income taxes and commuter taxes are illegal in California (for now).

California is broke. SF is broke. It’s going to be wonderful to watch the “progressives” decide which “essential” programs are going to get the axe.

Trouble is – Americans are for the most part not too bright. They have a complete disconnect between those they elect and their “belief” system.
Ask any Obama voter why they voted for him and it’s not anything they “believe” – it’s personality cult. Ask McCain voters the same and most give similar answers (though often more personality of Palin).
Most regulars on this site are exceptions to that general rule though.

I was briefly in NJROTC in high school and wondered if it was still allowed.
It is one of the few classes I can remember, good stuff.

I did not learn to hate gays in that class or any others. However I would have been horrified with them teaching me it was normal and acceptable behavior like they do now.

Personally, I believe what gays do is their business and I think it is a private matter. I understand that some people are attracted to their own gender. Making it a public issue has forced people to take sides on an issue that most people are not affected by.
Keeping your private life, private, is a good idea in general, but in the military the need is pronounced.

What has happened now though is special interests is trumping the rights of the majority to have a differing opinion and trying to criminalize it.

Using the excuse of gay rights being threatened by JROTC programs, or scouting is pathetic.

Omu, here we go again. Have you ever served in the Armed Forces? I ask because it has an impact on how you think about having gays serve in the military alongside straights.

I served for 22 years. During my time at DaNang AB in Vietnam I ‘bunked’ in one of two rooms with 11 other men and we had one toilet, one sink and one shower to share between us. We were on different schedules with some of us flying the ‘early’ go with a 0245 briefing and 0415 takeoff while others had the ‘late’ go with an 1800 brief and 1930 takeoff. You met yourself coming and going with your days determined by the flying schedule, not when the sun came up or went down. We were constantly on the go with virtually NO privacy. You had to use the toilet, shave and take a shower when you could. More often than not you shared the bathroom with at least one other person, sometimes two and even three when someone was shaving at the sink while someone brushed their teeth (the other two conveniences being occupied by a lone person).

Now, let me introduce a gay person into that scenario. It could be someone who is happily ‘married’ to a life partner who alleges they are not going to have wandering eyes — or affections. Do you think they would ‘look’ given the opportunity? I daresay, they would. How does that make the straight person feel? Pretty uncomfortable, wouldn’t you think.

If you say that it shouldn’t or wouldn’t, then you should agree it is OK to bunk a married heterosexual male in a room full of females. If he states he is happily married and won’t have wandering eyes, then none of the women should feel uncomfortable being looked upon by someone of the opposite sex who is a practicing heterosexual, should they?

Granted, JROTC is just an introductory class in HS. It doesn’t involve being deployed and living under less than ideal conditions. However, like the thread we were both involved with re. Prop 8, it starts us down a slippery slope. Let the camel’s nose under the tent in a peacetime military (or a peacetime arm of the military) and then it will be applicable across the board.

Perhaps one of those females sharing a room with that straight male could be one of your own daughters. How would that strike you? I know it wouldn’t pass muster in my household!
