Obama-pimping teacher: “I should not have said that”

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 8, 2008 10:55 AM

Here’s a very disturbing update to the very disturbing video of Diatha Harris, the Obama-supporting teacher in Cumberland County, N.C. caught on tape hectoring a girl over her support for John McCain Harris now says “she should not have said that.” The student, Cathy Thompson, and her parents don’t want to see her punished.

Why?

Because that’s how the teacher always behaves!

Crikey:

The Cumberland County school system is investigating the actions of a former Asheville teacher criticized for “belittling” a student who voiced support for presidential candidate John McCain.

But the parents of that student, and the student herself, said Friday that teacher Diantha Harris did nothing wrong.

“She is usually messing around,” said Cathy Thompson, who was in Harris’ fifth-grade class in May when a Swedish film crew visited for a documentary on American politics. “When she said that, I knew she was messing around.”

What Harris said sparked the ire of conservative bloggers this week after a clip of her from the film “From Bill to Barack” made its way to YouTube. The film aired Monday on Finland’s Swedish language Channel 5…

…Cumberland County is home to Fort Bragg and the 82nd Airborne.

Cathy Thompson said Friday she wasn’t upset at the time. Her parents, Angela Moore and Army Staff Sgt. Robert Thompson, also said they weren’t mad at the teacher.

Moore said her daughter never mentioned feeling as if she was being picked on.

“Mrs. Harris is always active with the children like that,” Moore said. “I have sat in her class when my Cathy was a student, and she was very active with the children. She tries to get them involved with everything.”

Robert Thompson said when he first watched the clip Friday, he understood why some would see it as Harris trying to change his daughter’s mind.

But after hearing Harris’ side and talking with his daughter, he now thinks Harris is “getting a rough deal.”

If parents think Harris’s behavior constitutes acceptable “education,” we are even more screwed than I thought.

More: Reader Will Amos sends a link to this WRAL video of Harris and Cathy appearing on TV together. Harris plays the victim card to full tilt.
She apologizes for the “Your daddy could be in Iraq for 100 years” remark, but insists she did not inject her personal politics into the classroom.

Exclaiming “Oh, Jesus, McCain!” is apparently an expression of neutrality.

I agree with her on one thing: People should stop calling the school district at this point. The superintendent has spoken and he is investigating.

As if these quotations from aren’t disturbing enough by their own merit, if one compares them with what we see now in American education, we have true cause for concern.
“I begin with the young. We older ones are used up. We are rotten to the marrow. We are cowardly and sentimental. We are bearing the burden of a humiliating past, and have in our blood the dull recollection of serfdom and servility. But my magnificent youngsters! Are there any finer ones in the world? Look at these young men and boys! What material! With them, I can make a new world. This is the heroic stage of youth. Out of it will come the creative man, the man-god.”

“When an opponent declares, ‘I will not come over to your side,’ I say calmly, ‘Your child belongs to us already…What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing but this new community’.”

“…Knowledge would spoil my young people. I prefer that they learn only what they pick up by following their own play instinct. But they must learn self-control. I will have them master the fear of death through the most difficult trials. That is the heroic stage of youth. Out of it will grow the stage of the free man, a human being who is the measure and center of the world.”
    Who said these? Adolf Hitler.

The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom.
As I wrote back in August: Barack Obama is merely the culmination of our culture. Obama fills many of today’s virtues. What are today’s virtues? Primarily, openness and equality. As Allan Bloom stated, “Openness used to be the virtue that permitted us to seek the good by using reason. It now means accepting everything and denying reason’s power. The unrestrained and thoughtless pursuit of openness, without recognizing the inherent political, social, or cultural problem of openness as the goal of nature, has rendered openness meaningless. Cultural relativism destroys both one’s own and the good. Culture, hence, closedness, reigns supreme. Openness to closedness is what we teach.” Then you have equality, which now trumps excellence, for one can be no better than another, have more than another, regardless of disparities in the amount of time and effort one spends to accomplish their goals.
So, here we have Obama, who doesn’t “flip-flop,” but rather is “open” to all sides, which is now more virtuous than being right. In our culture now, he’s also the personification of equality. Regardless of his lack of skill, intellect, character, and leadership credentials, Obama still carries the day in terms of equality by showing that despite all of his deemed “hurdles” of race, mishaps of character, coming from a broken home, etc., he shows that we’re “good” enough to elect him, which provides more people “hope,” since no longer do you need to have the aforementioned qualities or a strong work ethic to be President. All one needs now is an “open” mind and the most average, or even “disadvantaged,” background.
So when we ask ourselves where our culture has gone, I answer with two words: Barack Obama.

Don’t count on avoiding PC by teaching science or math either. The textbooks and methods to do so these days will drive you crazy by their poor quality, mistakes and confusions. Yet you will not be allowed to use others.

Nor in such classes will you have much ability to enforce the quiet yet active type of discussion best suited for learning. Discipline there is not, for academic subjects, anything but for discussion of feelings. You can achieve some order only by discussing some current issue — American Idol, a sports event, etc, and having everyone getting their feelings out.

Don’t count on any support for more serious discipline measures — and in some schools — avoid the hallways during class changes. You might be wearing the wrong gang colors, or something.

And even if you are tough, a street fighter, able and willing to take down the hardest cases — you’ll only last so long. It won’t be the students that take you out, it will be the teachers who see you as disruptive, and the parents who complain to school board members, and school board members who immediately burn off the ears of Principals.

You may be a top dog, but the Pack is huge and they will hit you from every direction.

Unless you stick to feelings. Grammar doesn’t matter. Facts are ancient garbage. Feelings count.

No, I am sick and tired of teachers using a child for a punching bag to express their political opinions. Had a McCain supporting teacher done this to a student my reaction would be the same.

It is time to put the fear of God into teachers who job is to educate, not pontificate, not indoctrinate, not social engineer. They can check their personal opinions in at the door.

We had political discussions like this all the time when I was in school. You could have a great didscussion of the candidates and issues. You could never tell if your teachers was a Democrat or Republican. Teachers wore no buttons. School was an island for academic exploration.

This piece of dirt brow beats a fifth grade girl, who has had to live in terror for a year praying her dad did not come home in a body bag or with parts blown off or with a catastrophic head injury.

And this teacher is sarcastically and with reat delight telling the child she is stupid becasuse McCain is going to make your daddy put you through that over and over and over again. After doing that I do not give a rats rear what happens to that teacher.

When a beating is over it’s over. A verbal beating lasts a long, long, time.

Why my approach? If I am the superintendent I want every teacher to know that I will not tolerate a teacher like that and if they do it they get a professional death sentence. I want every student to know that no teacher has the lattitude to treat a student in the manner this teacher did. And I want that individual humiliated. She merits the treatment.

Of course the teacher should be fired and never allowed to teach again, at least not at government expense.
All these small but significant actions we see on occasion, the abuse by a stupid teacher and the arrest of the citizen in Phil. P,A. for wearing a shirt remind me of the films I’ve seen of Germany in the ’30s. Hang on folks it’s going to get ugly.

Ridicule is never a positive teaching tool. Parentally approved or not.

Which only proves two things: One is that that’s the method her parents use and the second is her parents have now given approval to the abuser to continue using the method of ridiculing their daughter as a teaching tool.

The parents now have no recourse for such abuses in the future no matter how many tears she might come home with.

a coloring book in it’s place. The children were sharing lunches with the children whose
lunches were stolen and the school year was nearly over before any of the parents found out that anything was going on. The class had closed ranks around the teacher and were
protecting her. It wasn’t until a child went into diabetic shock that we or the other teachers
and principal at the school discovered her condition. When she wasn’t stealing lunches, she was her usual terrrific self apparently and the children loved this self. This may be
part and parcel what is going on at that school. Besides the fact that parents probably
didn’t want their child singled out as a troublemaker. They may know more about the
school than we do. I do know that the next year, a teacher that had some of the students in our sons class ( not him, however) asked the children if they were going to
drive her crazy. When they told their parents and the parents complained, she said she
was only teasing. However, she was never really at ease with these students for the entire year and made no bones about the fact that she didn’t trust the parents or children to not cause her trouble.

I can. Government money always has government strings attached to it. You think the educrats will fade into that good night just because we issue vouchers and suddenly the public school population drops precipitiously? Heck, no. They will have to “oversee” all those private and home schools receiving the funds. “For the children,” you know. How long before they are telling those recipients of “government” funds (vouchers) what their schools must and must not do? Who they can hire? What students they must admit? What subjects can/cannot be required?

Better to do as WarEagle (I think) suggested yesterday and bring the public schools crashing down under their own weight.

As if these quotations from aren’t disturbing enough by their own merit,

I’ve got one even scarier quote for you:

“You can’t make Socialists out of individualists–children who know how to think for themselves spoil the harmony of the collective society which is coming, where everyone is interdependent.”

Unlike Hitler, John Dewey is publicly revered by most of the educrat establishment. Much of modern US educational philosophy goes back to Dewey. Which might explain why we have so many people who can’t think for themselves. It isn’t that the schools failed — it’s that they succeeded.
