What a week, huh? What did you do today to decompress? I cleaned the house, had friends over, cleaned the house again, and did crafts and games with the kids. We’re having a Malkin Family Game Tournament: Boggle, Monopoly Jr., Upwords, and two video games (Beach Bocce and Big Brain Academy). I stink at Bocce.

Speaking of kids, did you hear Piper Palin’s interview? She’s a darling.

    Michelle,

Do you think you could start another petition for the end-of-term pardons President Bush should give to Ramos and Campeon (sp?)? Their treatment is something I would expect of the Obama Administration, not one that occurred while we still had a semblance of democracy.

Sounds to me that the democrats still fear Sarah Palin. The attacks on her probably will continue in hope that they can stop Sarah Palin making a run for the Presidency in four years.

In a way though with the huge mess obama and the democrats will make, perhaps it would be best that Sarah does not run for President.

I had a very interesting day.
On Thursday I sent a letter to the editor of the local paper that outlined what I feared we could expect from an Obama administration: higher energy prices, consumer prices, taxes; Fairness Doctrine; gun grabbing; wealth redistribution; abandoning Israel; etc…
The letter ran in the paper today. This morning at about 9:00 I get a phone call from a guy who read my letter, and said he felt compelled to call and tell me that he agreed with every point I made, and that when he thought back through all of The Ones statements from the campaign he can now clearly see that everything I had listed is going to happen.
Like many here, he was disappointed that the American people could not see through the empty suit.

Let’s see, what did I do to de-compress? I stopped watching the news. All the swooning, hysterical news people who are supposed to be objective, you know, “watchdogs” of government are too much for me right now. I did send an e-mail to the ombudsman of the Washington Post, regarding her admission that the Post’s campaign coverage was just a little slanted. Wanna read it? Okay, if you insist:

    To: ombudsman@washpost.com
    Subject: Obama Tilt In Coverage
    Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2008 19:35:18 -0600

    Dear Ms. Howell,

Thank you for your ombudsman-like in-depth statistical investigation into whether or not the WashPost tilted its coverage toward one candidate or the other in the past Presidential campaign. Thankfully, we regular work-a-day people out here in the U.S.A. really do not need an extensive investigation to ascertain your conclusion.

“I don’t at all discount the importance of issues, but we had a larger purpose, to convey and explain a campaign that our own David Broder described as the most exciting he has ever covered, a narrative that unfolded until the very end. I think our staff rose to the occasion.”

“Exciting” – ah, yes – capturing the Emotion is so much more paramount than the Facts and Issues. Thank goodness for that “Larger Purpose”.

And thank you, Bill Hamilton and David Broder, for taking the time to “explain” Obama’s campaign to me, as I’m not nearly smart enough to figure it out all by myself. What would I do without folks like you?

Please, Ms. Howell, do not lose any sleep worrying about the abandonment of all journalistic objectivity and responsibility to investigate all candidates’ backgrounds by your Bill Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton is just one of hundreds of malfeasant news editors around the nation who acted like hysterical teenagers at a rock concert in his approach to covering the Obama campaign. He’s actually pretty much the run of the mill, now that we no longer have a real national press corps.

I trust that Mr. Hamilton was not one of the editors who sent reporters out to demand a sample of Governor Palin’s amniotic fluid to determine if she or her daughter, Bristol, is the mother of little Trig. Or can I trust that much?

Shame on all of you. You’ve failed us miserably. The real Problem is that men like Bill Hamilton are so arrogant that they don’t even comprehend what they have done to the nation. Hamilton didn’t do his job. He and Broder were never interested in finding out who Barack Obama really is and from whence he came. So, now that The One is ascended, we’ll have to find out for ourselves, for better or for worse – the hard way.

In the meantime, y’all just keep emoting and swooning a little while longer.

Somewhere George Orwell must be looking on in horror. Who could have imagined all this but he?

Even with the amazing amount of credence given to SNL the last few weeks, and even with this last few weeks being the most press and publicity this horribly lousy show has gotten, their ratings still barely get above cable show ratings. If SNL was not on the worst network on TV, the pathetic ratings that show gets would be certain death for the show.

While I miss some of the really funny people that have come in and out of that show, I can not help but also think of the absolutely atrocious people and writers and how without a left leaning loving media this show would go by the wayside without a hint of longing from the public.

Since we should be getting all sorts of minor Obama events for the next say, 4 years or so, well, I think it might be a nice pasttime to just count em all up.

Anyone got some ideas on how to get the ball rolling on this?

Maybe we could try to get MM to setup a poll with ranges of counts before each major speaking event. I would figure the ‘State of the Union’ address to be a ‘low volume’ event, while a simple press conference could be a real ’slammer’!

    For Barack Obama:

Secrets of how to cut the ‘um’ from your speech

There is unfortunately a common occurrence that to me is like nails being dragged down a blackboard.

It’s the ‘um’ and ‘er’ that some people put into gaps in their speech.

These are sounds added in between words and sentences to fill the silence and tell listeners that the speaker is still speaking. In a normal two way conversation, the people having the conversation take turns to speak. Like a tennis match these turns go back and forth. The listener knows when to speak next, when the ‘ball is in their court’, by waiting for the speaker to be silent. So if the speaker does not want to give up their turn, they add in some form of filler noise. An ‘um’ or ‘err’.

Of course, when someone is presenting there is no need for the filler noises as there is an expectation from everyone that the speaker is not having a back and forth conversation. Yet I’ve seen CEO’s of multi-national companies presenting to a camera and have two or three of these noises in every sentence. It was excruciating for me to watch.

The interesting thing about these filler noises is that they are not needed. Not only not needed when speaking to an audience, but not even needed when speaking one on one. You can keep silent within a conversation, and still hold the speaker position. The most obvious, overt example of this is when the speaker holds up their hand like a stop sign.

You can hold the attention of all listeners with entirely non-verbal methods. Take a look a Tony Blair and Bill Clinton during interviews for examples of this. Watch their behaviour, not what they are saying. Listen to the timing and rhythm and become aware of the silence that they deliberately allow into the speeches.

There are many things that you can do to first stop the habit of ‘um’ and second learning how to keep attention. To start, consciously slow down your rate of speech a little allowing you to listen to your own words and enable you to self edit what you say. And secondly, play with how much you can slow down your speaking and extend the silence without others commenting…

As such, these staffers are trying to do everything in their power to derail any future political aspirations SP my have in the future to assist in these staffers maintaining a higher level of job security. In short, they effed up the campaign, and SP would not want anything to do with them in the future. So they don’t want SP to be the future of the party because she would not enlist their services.

John Sununu has a 100% pro-life record. Jeb Bradley was not running for the Senate; he was Congressman for the NH First District until 2006 and was seeking to get his old seat back. And a dummy who doesn’t even know Africa’s a continent supposedly is fully up to speed on a Congressional candidate’s views on abortion?

By the way, if the issue here is the lack of party solidarity demonstrated by Governor Palin, a couple of points:

    1) When I saw her in Laconia, NH, she was on stage with Sununu and Bradley and behaved perfectly well with them.

    2) Joe Kenney, the Republican gubernatorial candidate for New Hampshire and a current state senator, told me the McCain team refused to allow him to appear on stage at the rally. The official explanation was that he hadn’t had a Secret Service background check, and it would not be possible to arrange one in time. Needless to say, this was not persuasive.

From this last few days, the McCain campaign seems determined to go down in history as a blend of personal viciousness and strategic ineptitude. Not an attractive combination.
