Happy Birthday, Marine Corps

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 10, 2008 12:41 PM

The official message for the Marine Corps commandant:

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY MESSAGE – 10 NOVEMBER 2008

Date Signed: 10/10/2008
ALMAR Number: 042/08
R 082000z OCT 08
ALMAR 042/08
MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC CMC//
SUBJ/UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY MESSAGE – 10 NOVEMBER 2008//
POC/SSGT M. BELL/ADMIN CHIEF/UNIT:CMC STAFF GROUP/-
/TEL:(703) 614-2326//

GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. DURING THE SUMMER OF 1982, IN THE WAKE OF A PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE, MARINES WENT ASHORE AT BEIRUT, LEBANON.

FIFTEEN MONTHS LATER, ON 23 OCTOBER 1983, EXTREMISTS STRUCK THE FIRST MAJOR BLOW AGAINST AMERICAN FORCES – STARTING THIS LONG WAR ON TERRORISM. ON THAT SUNDAY MORNING, A SUICIDE BOMBER DROVE AN EXPLOSIVE-LADEN TRUCK INTO THE HEADQUARTERS OF BATTALION LANDING TEAM 1/8, DESTROYING THE BUILDING AND KILLING 241 MARINES AND
CORPSMEN.

2. EXTREMISTS HAVE ATTACKED OUR NATION, AT HOME AND ABROAD, NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE THAT FATEFUL DAY IN BEIRUT. THEIR AIM HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME – TO KILL AS MANY INNOCENT AMERICANS AS POSSIBLE. THE ATTACKS OF 11 SEPTEMBER 2001 CHANGED OUR NATION FOREVER, AND OUR PRESIDENT HAS RESOLVED THAT THIS NATION WILL NOT STAND IDLE WHILE MURDEROUS TERRORISTS PLOT THEIR NEXT STRIKE.

MARINES WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY – HITTING THEM ON THEIR OWN TURF, CRUSHING THEM WHEN THEY SHOW THEMSELVES, AND FINDING THEM WHERE THEY HIDE.

3. ONLY A FEW AMERICANS CHOOSE THE DANGEROUS, BUT NECESSARY, WORK OF FIGHTING OUR NATION’S ENEMIES. WHEN OUR CHAPTER OF HISTORY IS WRITTEN, IT WILL BE A SAGA OF A SELFLESS GENERATION OF MARINES WHO WERE WILLING TO STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR OUR NATION; TO DEFEND THOSE WHO COULD NOT DEFEND THEMSELVES; TO THRIVE ON THE HARDSHIP AND
SACRIFICE EXPECTED OF AN ELITE WARRIOR CLASS; TO MARCH TO THE SOUND OF THE GUNS; AND TO ABLY SHOULDER THE LEGACY OF THOSE MARINES WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE.

4. ON OUR 233RD BIRTHDAY, FIRST REMEMBER THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED AND THOSE “ANGELS” WHO HAVE FALLEN – OUR REPUTATION WAS BUILT ON THEIR SACRIFICES. REMEMBER OUR FAMILIES; THEY ARE THE UNSUNG HEROES WHOSE SUPPORT AND DEDICATION ALLOW US TO ANSWER OUR NATION’S CALL.

FINALLY, TO ALL MARINES AND SAILORS, KNOW THAT I AM PROUD OF YOU AND WHAT YOU DO. YOUR SUCCESSES ON THE BATTLEFIELD HAVE ONLY ADDED TO OUR ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY.

GENERAL VICTOR H. “BRUTE” KRULAK SAID IT BEST WHEN HE WROTE, “… THE UNITED STATES DOES NOT NEED A MARINE CORPS … THE UNITED STATES WANTS A MARINE CORPS.” YOUR ACTIONS, IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN, AND ACROSS THE GLOBE, ARE AT THE CORE OF WHY AMERICA LOVES HER MARINES.

5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES AND SEMPER FIDELIS! JAMES T. CONWAY, GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS, COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS//

    Happy Birthday!

    Semper Fi.

    From the Halls of Montezuma
    To the Shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country’s battles
    In the air, on land and sea;
    First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean;
    We are proud to claim the title
    of United States Marine.

    Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
    We have fought in ev’ry clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
    In the snow of far-off Northern lands
    And in sunny tropic scenes;
    You will find us always on the job–
    The United States Marines.

    Here’s health to you and to our Corps
    Which we are proud to serve
    In many a strife we’ve fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
    If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
    They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

    “You read about Samson, all from his birth
    He was the strongest man ever has lived on earth
    One day while Samson was walking along
    Looked down on the ground he saw an old jaw bone
    Then he stretched out his arm and his chains broke like threads
    And when he got to move, ten thousand was dead

    If I had my way
    If I had my way
    If I had my way
    I would tear this whole building down

    Now Samson and the lion, they got in attack
    And Samson he crawled up on the lion’s back
    You read about this lion, he killed a man with his paws
    Samson got hands up round the lion’s jaws
    He ripped that beast, killed him dead
    And the bees made honey in the lion’s head

    If I had my way
    If I had my way
    If I had my way
    I would tear this whole building down”

    “Being a Marine is a state of mind. It’s an experience some have likened more to a calling than a profession. Being a Marine is not a job, not a paycheck; it’s not an occupational specialty. It’s no male or female, majority or minority. Nor is it a rank insignia. Stars, bars, or chevrons are only indicators of the responsibility of authority we hold at a given time. Rather, being a Marine comes from the eagle, globe, and anchor tattooed on the soul of every one of us who wears the Marine Corps uniform. It’s a searing mark on our innermost being, which comes after the right of passage through boot camp or Officer Candidate School. When a young man or woman is allowed for the first time to say “ I’m a United States Marine”, unlike physical or psychological scars, which over time will tend to heal and fade in intensity, the eagle, globe, and anchor only grow more defined, more intense the longer you are a Marine.”
    -Lt.Col. Jeffrey Wilkinson as quoted in the December 1997 issue of Marine Corps Gazette.

    The Marines where sent to fight the Barbary pirates by Jefferson…
    The Barbary pirates started taking hostages for ransom during the War of 1812-They probably thought that the new US would not fight on two fronts – WRONG:
    Madison sent the fleet / Marines again in 1815 with these words:
    “It is a settled policy of America, that as peace is better than war, war is better than tribute.
    The United States, while they wish for war with no nation, will buy peace with none.”

    We still have the Marines-
    Do we have a citizenry and elected officials with the same spine as Madison?
    We are in a very old war…

    You have my humble thanks, folks. Your support of all our troops here and abroad you need to know will never be forgotten. I was not fortunate to receive such wonderful thoughts and thanks when I returned from Vietnam, but I did know that it would never happen again. You need to know you have given all of us the honor to serve you…. the true America. I use this name when I post, not to rub my status in anyone’s nose or to be arrogant. I decided to use it because I never thought it would be necessary to ever remember my training and experiences on our home front…. I was sadly mistaken. I use this name here , with Michelle’s permission, to tell all that I will never surrender.. never back down.. and will stand on the wall forever if need be. I refuse to keep my mouth shut because of a PC philosophy, I can’t. Sorry for the ramble, Semper Fidelis, Marines! Remember all, tomorrow , who serve and have served. I really love this country.

    First chance I have had to be on in a couple of days. Thought I would put up part of something I wrote a few years ago…

    What is it that makes the Corps itself so special? What sets it apart from the other branches of service?

    It can only be the individual Marines and how they themselves hold their Corps so dearly. Marines join the Corps searching for something more. They seek a challenge that cannot be found in the Navy, nor the Army. They seek the chance to earn a title that is very nearly sacred. People have often made jokes and disparaging remarks about Marines and their fanaticism. But it is that very fanaticism, the dedication to the Corps, the pride in having earned the title “Marine” that binds fellow Marines together. It is that fierce dedication that makes the Corps so special.

    A few years ago there was a young man walking across a parking lot with his father. This young man, who had just graduated Marine Corps boot camp, was filled with pride at having earned a title so few could lay claim to and was proudly wearing his uniform. Walking proud and tall beside his father, a Navy carrier veteran of Vietnam, the young man was stopped by an elderly gentleman. The old timer had to have been in his seventies, perhaps eighties, but there was fire in his eyes still. He took hold of this young Marines arm and squeezed tightly, telling him how proud he was to see that uniform. He talked to the young Marine for only a moment or two, letting the younger man know that the older man had worn the same uniform some fifty years earlier. As a veteran of the Pacific Campaign he wished the young Marine well in his travels. It was then that the young Marine realized just what it was to be bound to the honor of his predecessors. In a stunning moment of clarity the young Marine understood that the often talked about “brotherhood” was exactly that, and that he was bound to meet the expectations of those who had gone before him, just as those yet to come must be bound to meet the high expectations he holds for them. The bond Marines have to their Corps, the bond they have to each other is what makes Marines so special, what makes their Corps so special.

    Through its long history, filled with battle honors and peace time traditions, the Marine Corps has yet to let down the nation she defends. It is this dedication to honor, courage and commitment along with history and heroics that we honor on November 10th.

    To my fellow Marines past and present, I thank you for your dedication to Corps and country.
