Invite a vet to dinner: Golden Corral is once again offering its 2008 Military Appreciation Monday dinner next Monday from 5 pm to 9 pm in all Golden Corral Restaurants.
The free “thank you” dinner is available to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to participate in Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation Monday dinner.
To date, Golden Corral restaurants have provided over 1.8 million free meals and contributed over $2.53 million to the Disabled American Veterans organization.
Applebee’s is also offering free dinners for vets. Info here.

God Bless You All. Each and every one of you.
Thank you to all those who have served, and are serving still.
All give some. Some give all.
Never forget that. Thank those you can for their service. Go to a recruiting station, and order them a pizza. Bring them some coffee. Take your kids there, and let them thank these men and women personally. If you’re close to VA or DC, take a few minutes and go to the memorials.
Remember why it is we have the freedoms we enjoy, and how they are maintained.

I checked the duty roster this morning and our names were both on it. The First Sergeant hates us.
Has the last WWI vet passed yet?
All of my grandfathers from WWII are gone now. No one in my family was in Korea. Two of three from VietNam are still with us.
I’d be fine to go again, but its getting a lot harder to do 10 mile runs on the beach these days. (and I cant do 100 pushups on each arm anymore either
)

As a VET myself, I want to say to all my BROTHERS and SISTERS we will never forget your service… To the only remaining VET from WWI, thank you… To all of the GREATEST GENERATION from WWII, thank you… All from KOREA, thank you… From VIET NAM, thank you… From GULF 1, thank you… And most special, all the BROTHERS and SISTERS in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN, thank you very, very much!!!

The citizens of Europe need to stand up and thank our fine veterans for enabling them to live in relative peace and prosperity these last sixty and some years.
My children didn’t get Veteran’s Day off, our school uses the opportunity for a school Mass to honor the fallen and those serving today.

If you wish to “support the troops”, then I ask you that you do the following: (1) Support their mission, (2) Encourage more of-age men to enlist, and (3) Encourage/honor our troops, not because of their sacrifices, but rather their accomplishments.

I wish we would have made this Veterans’ Day especially joyful for one veteran in particular, John McCain, by bestowing upon him the mantle of Commander-in-Chief, but just because that didn’t happen is America’s appreciation for her men and women in uniform, nor her military’s place in the world, lessened.

I spent 12 months in a very unpopular war in Southeast Asia in 1968, lost several bunkmates there but made it back without any permanent damage by the grace of God.
Now, to see what those who never served anywhere will do with their freedoms hurts more than anything I ran into there.
That is, give themselves and their freedoms away to a socialist government leader with a questionable birthright and has never had the stones to do his military duty.

The Murtha column is almost word for word like an article on the MSNBC web site.The information is being fed to them by the IAVA (Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Assoc)led by Paul Reichkoff.
A purely partisan organization funded by the liberal groups around the country.
There is no love lost between the guys at Blackfive and other milbloggers and the IAVA, regardless of what they claim their purpose in life is.

Unfortunately, all my uncles, great-uncles, etc, that served in WWII have passed.
My uncles were in Battle of the Bulge and other European theaters. Softer-spoken men you would never meet. They were lovely people. And you cannot imagine the horrors they had seen.
My cousins (brothers) were both interred in Japanese prisoner of war camps in the South Pacific. They could never get enough to eat when they returned, my grandmother said, because they were always scared they’d starve again.
I’m glad I knew them, and listened to them, before they passed away.
The First Pentecostal Church of Brenham, Texas, held a Veterans Day service Sunday morning. It was an extremely emotional and uplifting service as we honored the men and women who have served the United States of America so selflessly and so courageously. I cried so hard that I left the service physically exhausted.
Where does America get such courageous men and women?
Thanks to our Veterans I live in a country where I worship God with complete freedom; I live in peace and safety; I am able to achieve a prosperous lifestyle through hardwork and commitment.
Is “Thank you” enough? Hardly. In this age where our military has to endure the liberals who disrespect them at every corner (and parking stall), it is good to know there are men and women who serve with pride.
For all who are serving, Yah bless you and keep you safe.
For those who have served, Yah bless you for your service.
For all who paid the ultimate price, Yah receive you, may we never forget your sacrifice.

Thanks. We raised them right but I never pushed service on them. I have my dad to thank for that. He served in the Navy for 20 years and after being a Navy brat that long, I didn’t want any part of it. If the Army had shown me a picture of an A-10 though, they would have had me. Too bad they are no longer building that awesome bird. That thing can take one heckofa beating and still get her pilot home. Alas, it was not to be and I am just an old fart now! I am proud of the kids though.
Remembering my fellow vets on this Veteran’s Day. Grady, Raoul, Casey, and Jamie — I miss you guys.
To all my old pards out there who made that year in ‘Nam bearable and at times, even fun in a quirky sort of way. Remember warm Carling Black Label in rusty cans? How we looked forward to Honey Pot detail? Filling sandbags until I swore we’d run out of sand? And the unforgettable spectacle of igniting a 55 gal. drum of fougasse? Those were indeed the days. Here’s a toast to the old boys from the 175th USASA Op Co, II Field Force Vietnam.

Soap, I flew the A-10 during my 22 years in the AF and absolutely loved it. Under certain conditions when you fired the 30MM cannon you could actually see the rounds going downrange. No matter the conditions, you could always smell the cordite in the cockpit!
Salute to your offspring serving our country now. You and Mrs. Soap done good!

Just a word of warning about Applebee’s. here in the metro area of Mpls/St Paul, they are NOT taking part of the special. It appears this is a test promotion. I advise any and all to call the Applebee’s location you intend to visit to confirm. I hold no ill will towards Applebee’s , I just wish they’d have explained it better.

Elizabeth City (Coast Guard airbase) and Nags Head are the only two cities in NC participating

Let us never forget it is a strong military that keeps us safe. Were it not so it would only be a matter of time before Canada decided it needs a little lebensraum in the Dakotas and that Florida would make for a wonderful Soviet summer colony.
We are free because our armed forces are on duty ceaselessly every day, from the mechanic in the motorpool to the admiral on deck.

A special “Thank You” to MM who has so graciously invited us into her home and allowed us to post here. Say what you will, but as far as I’m concerned, she’s as much a veteran as any of us, and probably more so.
Michelle, may you always have fair winds and following seas, and may the wind be always at your back.
I served as a draftee in the U.S. Army (1964–66) and developed a much deeper respect for the good military men and women who defend and protect us.
My dad served as a navigator on a Navy cargo plane in the South Pacific during WW2. I met an 87 year old Black VFW man at Walmart–he was handing out veteran’s poppies. This man served in the same area and was still in good health and spirits.
I have attended the Ft. Bliss, Texas cemetery funerals for older co-workers, and fellow church members who served most of their lives in the military. An Army major who parachuted into Normandy on D-day–he fought for two weeks with a broken ankle and never walked properly again. An Army Air Force P-51 fighter pilot who took it to the Nazis in France and Germany. An uncle who piloted soldiers to the Pacific theater and flew the wounded back to Hawaii for treatment. The flag on their graves and the rifle fire salute with Taps always brings tears to my eyes.
May God bless all those who served and protected our country. This debt can never be repaid–George Washington’s soldiers who gave us our country, the Union soldiers who ended slavery and the division of our country, those who saved Europe (twice) from the Germans, those who defeated and reformed Japan.
I do not know what the future holds–our brave military keeps defending freedom, but the history is not being taught and is / has been forgotten by most of our U.S. citizens.

First, I want to take this opportunity and thank each and every man and woman who has ever put on the uniform that tells the world they are serving in the finest military that the world has ever known, that has lead the way in freeing the oppressed, has crushed the foes of Liberty and Freedom in every corner of the globe where they have placed their boots and our flag for allowing me to live as free as possible, to raise my family without fear of Death Squads, tyrants, dictators and others who would willfully crush that which makes a human being a free person.
Your sweat, blood, sacrifice has allowed this country to flourish when others have whithered. While other countries have seen their entire governments change just as quickly as a person changes their clothes, you have made sure that this experiment called The United States of America remains that Shining Light, guiding all others in the way in which a country can prosper.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and always know that if nothing else, you will always have this father and his daughters who will forever respect and be grateful for all you do and have done.
Second, to John Murtha: Shame on you. the audacity you have and show to in what you have written and the choice in words on this day demonstrates that you have neither a conscience nor soul. WHile you are included in the above for your service, at some point you have most definitely lost your way. There is very little in this world lower than a person who will turn on their own, who will stab their own bretheren in the back, and act as if they still respect them.
What you have done and demonstrated in your acts and deeds towards your fellow Marines can only be described as despicable. You are so low that you cannot even bring yourself to apologize to them and somehow try and reclaim what little dignity might be left for you.
While I was never a Marine, nor would I ever think to speak for any of them, I can speak for myself. To all men and women who have ever worn that uniform, I realize there are no “Ex” Marines, only former. But in my opinion, you are no longer worthy of such an esteemed title. You, you loathesome little worm, are forever to me, an “Ex” Marine to the point that I will never again use that title with your name so long as I shall live.
Low is the man that shows no remorse, let alone feels no shame…and you could not possible get any lower.
Over 100 years ago my great-grandfather fled the mid-east b/c he committed the “crime” of being a Christian…he was going to be killed. He made his was to this great country. Thank you to our Armed Forces for always defending all our freedoms…words cannot express my gratitude.

My Great, great grandfather served in the Confederate Army and his daughter was conceived on a battlefield in 1865. My granfather was a WW1 vet. My father served in the occupation force in Japan at the end of WW2. He passed away in 1965 while on active duty. I had many other relatives who served as well. Plus, I have many friends who have, and still serve.

I would like to send a thanks to all my fellow Veterans, and I take time to remember them all. Thank you to all whom I never knew, to all those who I served on all those ships and in the desert for almost 20 years, especially thank you to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy the freedoms we so cherish.
I know the Sierra Club is an organization in which we, as conservatives despise, but they have been funding a program that any OIF/OEF Veteran should take advantage of. I plan on taking advantage of it and will let you, Michelle, know how it was. Here is the link:

Not sure, but my best friend growing up might have been on 256 at one time. I THINK he was in the 9th marines, 3MDRD. I remember Chuck Robb, later VA Senator, son-in-law of LBJ, was a company commander in his BN.
He survived two wounds and 13 months in country. He was killed six years later by a drunk driver. My father and him are buried 50 meters from each other. We still talk….

It was relatively common for wives to visit husbands on the battlefield back then. Many Southern Brides had the “good fortune” of being closer to the fighting than most Yankee wives….
I would like all of you pre-1991 vets out there to take a moment and be proud of a battle you won that you may never know that you fought. This fall we had four guests in our home. They were all young women, who play in the Kiev Symphony orchestra. That Ukrainian symphony was unable to form until 1992, because they are Christian based and besides their music they do Christian outreach.
Until Communism fell any attempt to have an organization like them or even express your faith was done in the Ukraine at your own peril. But in 2008 those women free to travel could sit in our home at the dinner table and pray. As we sat at their concert as the most beautiful music you could possible imagine filled the hall, I looked out and you saw free, happy Ukrainian people, who for the first time in perhaps a century could express themselves and their faith.
They could do those things because we defeated that evil. 48 million Ukrainians alone live in freedom, because of us. I admit it; my eyes filled with tears. I may have only been one miniscule part of a decade’s long effort that millions served in, but I realized for the first time the enormity of what we did. Our monuments are those people and their churches of all faiths, filled with believers.
So to you Cold War veterans, you can say with pride; Mission Accomplished.
Those who have received the torch, preserve it, please.
This is a hard day for me as I want to always put a positive forward looking sight on our Veterans past and present. Its hard because our troops are just as inspirational today as they fight the battles around the world in the war on terror as any other time in history. I think of the liberal agenda and the slime of the majority delegation in Wash. D.C. and wonder just how much further we could have been if they would have shown the same courage and sense of national pride. That once again they put our troops in the field with truly odious ACLU lawyers and TV cameras looking over each shoulder and get rewarded with more power with which to abuse them with.
Our troops excel in spite of , not because of Congress.
Our Veterans and active troops represent all who truly honor them and together are the soul and courage of The United States.

I served in Vietnam 38 years ago. Nothing heroic. Just did my duty and came home honorably. My father and uncles who served during World War II are now gone.

BTW, the free Applebee’s meals are only for certain Applebee’s. For instance, there’s only one participating Applebee’s in the entire state of California and it’s in BFE (Yucca Valley). Yeah, thanks a LOT Applebee’s!

Living in a Marine Corps town, coming from a Corps family with a boyfriend in Iraq, there’s no way I’ll read anything by or about Murtha today. I’m putting my faith in all the good people out there to roast him over some coals. I love you guys!
Last year my boyfriend had a Happy Corral meal. This year he’s in Iraq. Thank you to Happy Corral, Applebees and others. It’s appreciated.
We’re at the point where I can no longer send care packages. I’d really like to thank everyone who donates money, time and goods to organizations that send packages to the troops. When I can’t do it, y’all come through! It’s appreciated.
Soldiers’ Angels has Project Valour-IT going on right now. I feel pretty tight fisted right now, bad economy and all, but I’m still matching my donation from last year. Soldiers’ Angels also has inexpensive care packages that you can purchase and they will send them to a deployed soldier. I heard firsthand that they are worth sending.

That’s disappointing. This is a military town without a single Applebee’s honoring the offer.

Yes, Mr. Buckles (last WWI veteran) is a fellow Missourian. Actually his hometown & birthplace is only a few miles away from the highest ranking officer in the US Army (ever)birthplace & hometown; Gen. John J. ‘Blackjack’ Pershing (born in Laclede, MO).

Thanks. He was a good friend and a very good Marine. He could have been in 3/5. His parents are gone as are his letters to me. I need to look up Chuck Robb’s history and find out what BN he was in.

When I was a kid my stepfather was assigned to V Corps, US Army Europe which was headquartered in Frankfurt, West Germany. The motto of V Corps is “It shall be done!”
I have always thought they should now change that motto to “It HAS been done!” V Corps and VII Corps (in Heidelberg) faced off against the greatest evil the world has ever faced for nearly 50 years and they accomplished their mission!
Those men and women of the Armed Forces gave the chance of freedom to hundreds of millions of souls.
