Who will quell the anti-Prop. 8 rage?

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 13, 2008 02:28 PM

Pssst. Hey, “Lightworker.” Yeah, you, “Mr. Soul-fixer.” Bearer of “Hope and Change.”

Across the country, there are broken souls in need of fixing. They are the opponents of Proposition 8, California’s traditional marriage initiative, which passed 52-48 (the same margin you won by, Lightworker).

Perhaps you would care to weigh in and work your healing magic on the anti-Prop. 8 rabble-rousers who continue to wreak havoc on Mormon churches in several cities and states and blacklisting peaceful voters who supported the ballot measure.

It is getting very ugly out there and no one in the Democratic leadership has stepped up to condemn the insane rage, to borrow a phrase.

Where art thou, Lightworker?

***

Sad:

The artistic director at California’s largest nonprofit musical theater company resigned Wednesday amid protests over his donation to a campaign to ban gay marriage in the state.

Scott Eckern stepped down from his job at the California Musical Theater in Sacramento after some gay activists called for a theater boycott.

He said he is leaving “after prayerful consideration to protect the organization and to help the healing in the local theatergoing and creative community.”

Eckern said he “chose to act upon my belief that the traditional definition of marriage should be preserved” but had no idea his contribution would generate such controversy. He said his sister is a lesbian in a domestic partnership, which he understands to carry the same legal rights as marriage.

The boycott calls — led by artists including “Hairspray” composer Marc Shaiman — began after activists learned Eckern contributed $1,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign.

The next step, traditional Protestant and Catholic churches (I think they’ll save the Orthodox Jews for last, and they won’t try it with the Muslims) will be taken to court, and if it is 5 Obamajustices on the SCOTUS, the First Amendment will be limited.

Alternate attack on churches that follow Scripture, ‘hate speech’ laws that an Obamafied court rules isn’t a First Amendment violation. It’ll set up Canadian style human rights courts, where preachers who teach Leviticus, or Paul’s Letter to the Church at Rome, will be charged.

Nothing about the way the vote for Prop. 8 was put on the ballot or voted upon was illegal. Why are we constantly reminded Obama won with 52% of the vote and it’s a mandate, but that the vote of the people on Prop. 8 can’t be respected?

Likewise, I note that those disappointed by the failure of several abortion measures aren’t out, threatening doctors and clinics and donors who opposed such measures.

Or are you saying that if an election doesn’t go the way the most loud, violent protesters desire, the fed should step in and change the results?

Boycotts like this have been going on for decades. In my opinion, the only reason that most people here are pissed off about it is because it’s a cause they don’t support. If Prop. 8 had been defeated and Mormons organized a boycott of gay owned businesses, nothing would be said.

Mooks, how people choose to spend their money or donate it is none of my business. If that were to factor in, I wouldn’t be able to buy a can of soda pop from a vending machine without running a backgroud check on it’s owner.

The bigger issue on this aspect, tho, is in the setting up of a hitlist for these obviously violent thugs so they can harass and assault Americans with ease.

No one said he had to agree with them or take up their cause. However, to not expect any kind of backlash or criticism when the majority of people you work with are gay is foolish. They have every right to their opinions as he does to his. It’s his decision to leave. If he felt strongly enough about Prop. 8 to make a large donation, he should have stood his ground.

I don’t think he had much choice. They were threatening boycotts against the Theatre. What he was doing was actually looking out for what’s best for the overall Theatre group — gays included.

Well, if you knew anything about Mormons, this isn’t the way they work. They have a firm belief that marriage is between a man and a woman (as does the majority of the US). However, they do not “hate” gays. As for calling everyone that is against something you don’t agree with, a bigot, you need a dictionary.

Maybe so, but these same artists and performers draped in the protection of the First Amendment seem very eager to silence those whose opinion they dislike.

I think any acts of violence against any church/church member because of this is absolutely disgusting and whoever is responsible should be thrown in jail. I want to make that as clear as possible. But as far as boycotts go, I think it’s fair game. The information on donors for/against Prop. 8 is public. It wasn’t obtained by any nefarious means. Not patronizing a business owned by someone who actively participates in something you feel discriminates against you or something you believe in has gone on for decades.
