Mommyblogging: Cake-making and gift-giving
Sorry for the light blogging. I’m frantically making that Pikachu cake for my birthday boy. Up to my ears in Wilton icing.
Those Bakugan thingies arrived in the mail today (just in time!). After my search the other day, I thought of an idea. I’m buying a bunch of Bakugan thingies to donate to military families for Christmas. If you’re at Wal-Mart or Target or your toy store and happen to see any in stock, you might think of grabbing them up and doing the same. Boys are crazy about them.

uh my son is 30 and going to Iraq…. bakugan? lol Boy am I showing my age….But Happy Birthday to the little guy, Michelle. Icing tastes better off the spoon or knife, though.

Children are natures gift and theater play all in one.
So you get cake and a show.
I have to laugh, Michelle. I remember my son’s 2nd birthday [he's 23 now], he so wanted a Big Bird cake, so I did the Martha Stewart thing and just about midnight before his birthday, I finally got the thing iced, it was a little lop-sided, but his happiness was worth every blob of yellow icing that was on my body. Good Luck and Happy Birthday to your little munchkin.

My son digs those Bakugan thingies, too. And, God bless him, he doesn’t mind if his momma goes to Baskin Robbins to buy an ice-cream cake instead of baking.
At least part of my day tomorrow will involve Chuck E. Cheese, so that the kids aren’t forced to suffer all day through my boring studying/cramming. Thank You Jesus, commencement is 19 December.

I was thinking about getting him something fun and different like one of those FUR hats, fox, rabbit, raccoon, or whatever is best. Kinda the Russian looking thing I have seen in movies.

You’ll find foxes in dens, rabbits in burrows and racoons live in wooded areas. Lock and load and you should be good.

My DD just turned 8, and for the second year, she decided to have her friends not bring presents. Instead, they all brought stuffed animals for her to donate. (Last year, it was Bears on Patrol. This year, it was the shelter for abused women and children.) ::sniff:: She makes me proud!

Pikachu cake first, the world can wait. As a grandfather I have become somewhat of an expert on Pikachu, Transformers and Barbie Princess sets. Why I have to always be the Evil Dragon instead of the handsome Prince I do not know–rules is rules.
It does make the world go away for awhile. Enjoy.
When my niece was young, the rage was Power Rangers. For my friends’ kids, it was Pokemon. When I was young, it was…um…marbles. Times change but children are eternal. God bless ‘em.

Please do not donate toys to military families. There are plenty of kids in this country without homes, without parents with jobs, or without homes or parents, who need them much, much more. I don’t want to take anything away from the heroic sacrifices made by our troops and their families, but there are people out there with far more dire needs.

Its a reminder to the BSR house to make the birthdays (I have many children) more special.
My favorite cake was a Barbie cake we got for my eldest daugter a while back. Basically a large gumdrop-shaped hoop skirt (cake) impaled by the legs of a Barbie. She loved it. What a mess!

There will always be needy people and there will always be people who are deemed more so than others. I think people should give out of love…and if Michelle’s heart says to give to military families, so be it. And if there are readers of this blog that feel the same, more power to them.

Kudos to you, Michelle, for being self-reliant in the cake department! Most people buy bakery cakes that look okay and taste so-so.
When my kids were 2 and zero, I decided to take the free Wilton classes offered at Michael’s. It was a great decision. I took every class they offered — all the way through wedding cakes.
I make whatever the birthday recipient wants and learned scads of baking/decorating tips from our teacher — who owns a bakery! If you’re ever in a jam, let me know. I think I’ve experienced every pitfall known to cake decorators!
Good one! But I take it back… any good cause is a good cause, and I’ll be spoiling my own kids (who have parents and a home) more than I will give to Toys for Tots, so far be it for me to criticize anyone for their own donations.

I remember National Review had a regular column Delectations by Digby Anderson. Mostly on cooking & culinary matters, I always enjoyed reading that one.
I enjoy cooking and baking too. You know what is in it, you do save money, it tastes better, and so on. It takes effort and practice, but the satisfaction of sampling your own work well done (no matter what it is) is immense.
I baked a loaf of caraway rye today (and one a couple of days ago) and am eating off a pot of lentil soup I made a couple of days ago (I blogged about this at Blogger Beer).

My son is 9 but he is a special needs child and a little immature for his age. But, I think they are for ages 6+ if my memory serves.
But you went ahead and did it anyway.
OT I’m advocating locating a VA hospital near someone that has a Poly trauma unit located there. The brave Marines and soldiers, airmen, sailors, etc that have serious brain injuries would enjoy a Christmas party. The one here in MN is sponsored by the Vessey Chapter of the Association of the United States Army.

My “little” guy will be 15 0n April Fools Day-and is around 6 ft.
His interests now are getting his learners permit, being allowed to date, and getting a job.

I helped organize and deliver packages to those families for a couple of years, and I just didn’t like what I saw. Let’s just say that nobody bothered to invite us in, or even say “Thank You.”

I know of a company whose employees spent an entire year sitting out jars for contributions from customers and really hitting on their fellow workers to donate money. Then the shopping for toys and clothing, collectively wrapping them at a pizza party and delivering them from a list supplied by social services. Well, at the very first house they found a Cadillac with a happy sticker (aka: temp plate so it was just purchased) and the guy answering the door stayed on his cell phone the whole time and the number of gifts under the tree they could see from the door rivaled any display at Macy’s. The employees claimed they had made a mistake and left. The others were truly needy but also rude, wanted to know what was in them and what stores they were from (I’m thinking returns for cash?). It was Toys for Tots or a straight donation to the Marines after that.
What is it with you guys and pie?!?
Bakugan thingie? I have no idea what all of you are talking about; BUT I can name all the Care Bears, Care Bear Cousins, and Rainbow Brite and her buds!And I can remember sitting in a rocking chair with two sweet little girls watching Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. And I remember singing, and reading, and playing, and cuddling!
Can I have the Pikachu cake ears Michelle? I hope you stuffed them with chocolate. My kids are grown so I don’t get those treats very often.

OT: It was a nice shuttle launch. I remember when I saw a couple early ones live. If you’re close enough, you can feel the rumble at lift-off. It’s still exciting, even on a screen on my computer.

In my administration, we would repopen Manzanar JUST for the MSM.
I’ve run the full gamut from fancy-schmancy $60 bakery cake for my firstborn’s 1st birthday to making 3dz monkey cupcakes. I realized I don’t like spending the equivalent of my water bill on a freakin cake, but if I do it myself I’m like Martha with twice the ambition and half the talent. So now we stick to Wal-Mart and I have to say their cakes are pretty tasty and always cute.

I don’t do minced meat but other than that it’s in the ballpark. My personal favorite is vanilla cream pie with meringue, though I never eat the meringue? Pumpkin is another favorite with real whipped cream, but only once a year. Love apple but hate to make it, too hard to predict the outcome. Cherry with a touch of Grand Marnier and almond is also very good…don’t mess it up with phony stuff or ice cream.
If you’re really in a bind with a large number to serve, Costco cakes work really well. The tall chocolate one serves a lot more than you’d think.

My little ones are into the whole Club Penguin/Webkinz thing. At least the Club Penguin is free. However, Webkinz is the latest plot to overthrow the 10 and under crowd.
Yep, so are CareBears and Cabbage Patch Dolls. I just bought the Cabbage Patch Triplets for my grandaughter. Bob the Builder Talking Tool Belt for my 20month old grandson. Bob The Builder is about 10yrs old also.
MM, there is never a time for you or anyone else to ever apologize when doing for ones family. IMHO, without family, one has nothing.

My younger teenaged daughter baked my older teen daughter a Barbie cake last summer. (they regress sometimes, just for a bit, don’t they?) Where you put a Barbie in the middle and build a cake “dress” around the doll. It was quite spectacular, I must say. Kudos on the cake-making and decorating, Michelle. I’m not as good with that stuff, though i do bake.

The best cake in the world is a pineapple cake that you can get fresh in Hawaii (don’t know if I spelled Hawaii correctly. Just back from a vacation there and didn’t concentrate on the spelling of the aloha state). Go into any bakery on the islands and ask for the pineapple cake. I promise that you will never choose another style of cake (at least if your on the islands). Then ask for the Macadmian nuts in Maui and you will have the most perfect meal in the world. Maui is famous for other fine products as well but that is another story.
Then ask for shaved ice (you can only get it in the aloha state) and you will have the pefect combination: One from every food group that matters: cake, nuts, and ice. Ah, perfection!

I can think of OTHER places to lick icing off of when one’s wife is icing a cake, but this is a G rated blog, so I won’t go there.
You sound like me, MissCheryl. I’ve always said that if I cook something, even I’m afraid to eat it. If I have dinner guests, we need to take turns hold a gun on each other.
Marc (#94 and 95). I prefer the macadamia nuts from the Big Island. But, you left out the coffee. While Kona coffee has the biggest reputation, it is easier to get pure Kauai or Maui coffee. Shave (no “d”) ice is ono (good), as you pointed out. (Yes, I have lived there.)
