Mookie, I think I’ll pick up QL’s jazz CD, and I also want to get Seal’s new one that’s coming out, also very jazzy. I love his voice.
I saw the “E! True Hollywood Story” on Heidi Klum a short while ago. Their love sure looks solid. It would be nice to see another couple in the spotlight do well, ala Newman & Woodward, wouldn’t it?

That Seal CD is so good. He makes me melt.

It really would be nice to see that kind of a storybook relationship. Are there any couples even close right now? Brad and Angelina? They’ve got the charity aspect down pat. Although I think Angelina might have a couple of more tattoos than Joanne…

Never been to Joyzee myself. Oh wait…once I was in East Orange for a meeting, but that was 15 minutes of my life that I forgot about. Sorry, 30 pcs. No offense. I hear the Jersey Shore is beautiful, and would love to visit some time. I just bought the book, “1000 Places to See Before you Die”, US & Canada edition. I’m a traveler at heart, and want to keep my money in the US for a while.

No need to apologize to me. I hate it here. I’m originally from PA… as if that’s saying much. Anywho…me, the hubby and the dog aren’t long for NJ.

I can’t put Brangelina in the same category as Newman and Woodward, though. Unless….did Newman leave his first wife for Woodward? Could have been. It was a very long time ago. How about Hanks & Wilson? They seem to be giving it a good go.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick? The tabloids try to shake them up a bit when her movie came out earlier this year.
Let’s see…how about Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith? We don’t see much of her lately, which (meow alert!!) suits me because of the overdone plastic surgery.

30, I had my first visit to PA in July. I spent 3 days in Philadelphia and loved every sweat-drenched second of my visit. I stayed at a very cute little hotel, old but remodeled, right in the heart of downtown. I definitely want to go back and see more of PA. I had a short plane-change layover in Pittsburgh and that, too, looks like a place I want to see. I’ll have to consult my new book….

Oh, Im really sorry….. thats torture for me this time of year.

I need 29 degrees and snowing with about 3 inches already on the road.. Thats perfect running weather for me.

But then maybe Im warped from too much time spent in the Gulf… 140 degrees everyday being normal, and no rain for 1 1/2 years might have done something to me.

Michelle - keep my nephew in your prayers. This summer he was laid off from his job of several years. About six weeks ago he’d gotten a temp job doing similar work. His new job was a temp-to-hire, close to home, pay was good to start. He was happy. This past week, several of the new guys were discussing the election results on their break. Someone overheard and told management they were OFFENDED. Guess what? My nephew and the others were dismissed. That day.

Pray he finds another job soon - he has a wife and 4 kids, ages 8, 6, 3 and <1. And that his new employer honors free speech.

    Changing subjects, this just in:

BALTIMORE – The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday he is concerned about executive orders from President Bush in his last few months in office and the effect they could have on the incoming administration. “Bush is signing away consumer and environmental laws. I mean they’re running amok, you know,” Jackson said.
The civil rights leader and former presidential hopeful also criticized the federal bailout of the financial industry and called for the outgoing president to help the ailing automotive industry.
“It’s a huge economic crisis being compounded by this sense of ideology,” Jackson said after delivering a sermon at Bethel AME church in Baltimore.

Oh, Jesse, Honey, you ain’t see nothin’ yet, in terms of what rogue ideology can do to an economy. Fasten your seatbelts, Rev, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Actually the Navajo and Apache are the same people. They became separated during the migration from Canada.

Somehow that might not be all of the story. Im thinking there was a woman involved somewhere. She probably went to whomever was in charge of the migration and said, “I’ve told you once or Ive told you a hundred times…but this time Im putting my foot down. Well everyone, speaking of all this, I now have to head down to the brewpub for the rest of the evening. We’ll pick it up in the morning.

There seems to be a young co-ed bartending and she hasnt had the chance to completly shoot me down yet. I just need to give her a fair shot.

TxEng - Enjoy! (if/while you can) I ran through mine back at the first of the year. (Snowboard incident of all things)

    Long story short:
You don’t believe there is enough anectdotal evidence to support the claim that Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne were racists. Okay fine. I disagree.
There’s a whole lot more to the Jimmy Stewart stories, but folks can look it up if they care. Personally, Stewart used to be one of my favorite actors, and Harvey, one of my favorite films. Now I don’t enjoy either. The hell with Jimmy Stewart. I can’t enjoy the art of someone who thinks my race is inferior. That’s just me, I don’t begrudge or condemn anyone who can seperate the two.

Moreover, you’re saying that even if these men were racists, it doesn’t matter because they were in a different time and place, and they didn’t get the benefits of the modern Civil Rights Movement. If it doesn’t matter to you, good enough. For me, I don’t give passes just because times were different. There have been non-racist whites throughout our country’s history who believed in equality for all, and supremacy for none. These whites didn’t need a MLK in their life to teach them about human decency and humanity. I think your side talks about relativism. Well, when it comes to racism, it’s inherently wrong, and many in history have realized that, without the need for post-1954 Civil Rights education or excuse making.

Oh - and John Wayne’s wives weren’t just hispanic, they were MEXICAN, and racially Mexicans are 85% American Indian. So again one presses the question, how can John Wayne be a racist yet fall in love and marry not one but 3 women of a race he supposedly hates?

Now, that’s as almost as silly and unfocused as my original claim that hispanics are white. Many hispanics are white, and many mexicans consider themselves to be white. Your 85% claim doesn’t apply to ALL mexicans, and who the hell knows the racial makeup of Wayne’s wives. If the wives had Native-American blood, it doesn’t negate the ability of Wayne to have racist views against Native-Americans as a whole, or certain ones. People make exceptions and rationalize. If you look at the history of early Hollywood, it was perfectly acceptable to romantically pair a white male actor with “white” latin or hispanic actresses. You would never see a white male, star, actor romantically paired with a Black female in the 30s, 40s, or 50s. “White” latin or hispanic people were placed on a pedestal higher than blacks.

Watch Ken Burns “Civil War” series, you’ll see a liberal historian degrading Abraham Lincoln as a racist because with his Victorian upbringing and view point he wasn’t able to view racial relations the same way a post civil right movement American would.

Again, there were plenty of whites in the Victorian era who fought for and believed in racial equality for Blacks. Lincoln just wasn’t one of those people. Burns also shatters the myth that Lincoln freed the slaves because he was some heroic icon of racial equality.

Hey, this stuff doesn’t keep me up at nights, and I don’t devote my life to “correcting” the legacies of so-called icons. To each his/her own. But I offer no apologies for my views, or my insults to Filmladd. I feel bad for the people who have no interest in this crap, but hey, that’s what the mouse is for. I won’t be dropping any more insult bombs on this thread tonight, although some “counterpunches” are due.

I’m late on this thread (have been stuck on another as some of you know). One thing about that, I do want to apologize to Joy. I was pretty hard on her. I should have been more careful to respond to her posts in a truth-seeking manor (not trying to crush her arguments but asking questions to seek truth and to learn from her as well). I will try to be more civil in the future.

As to this thread, I was just talking about this to someone the other day. I remember watching Little Rascals, Our Gang, and the 3-Stooges growing up (anyone remember Icky Twerp’s Slam Bang Theater?) At some point, all of these shows just stopped being broadcast. I can’t remember when or why this happened, but thinking about it in light of today’s PC mindset, it makes sense why the broadcasts stopped.

Much of the old stuff did reinforce negative stereotypes and rightfully were stopped. Seems like there was an Abbot & Costello movie where this white guy sang on stage the song “Me and My Shadow”. To my horror, he had a black guy dancing behind him, mimicking the white guy’s movements. That’s as bad as it gets. What kind of planet would allow such a thing and no one thought anything about it? As much as the race-baiters complain of racism in the U.S. today, it is obvious that we’ve come a long way in the past 50 years.

I just wish to add one thing to the racist arguments:

There is no way to judge a person of the past by today’s standards. You don’t know (intimately) all the details of their upbringing or ignorance to certain issues. Nor does anyone seem to realize what society’s norms were then. In today’s world, the Little Rascals would never see the light of day. But when they were filmed, it was for pure entertainment and that is what people wanted to see then. Maybe a few meatheads saw them as a way to keep the Blacks down, but it was all about making money. Hey, it wasn’t that long ago that MTV was considered racist for not putting on any African-American acts besides Michael Jackson.

I realize they teach a more “convenient” form of history in the public schools today, but that doesn’t help us in determining how far we have come and how much further we have to go. So please keep the context correct when discussing historical references.

I agree with Cabrerski. As a “student” of history, I’ve found that too many historians tend to judge people, not on the society and values then, but the social values that we have today. A serious mistake. If a person grew up in a racist society and showed racist tendencies, condemning him is stupid. For example, some historians love to condemn Jefferson, to be in the PC norm of today. Yet, they fail to point out that freeing slaves, in Virginia, at that time was illegal; plus a quick way to bankruptcy, ostrazation and debtors’ prison. The state government, at that time, was very concerned over the number of free blacks at that time. They also attack him for not freeing slaves, like Washington, at his death. The loophole that Washington used, was closed by 1826. You won’t find too many references to Jefferson as a “desperate radical” either. He frequently submitted bills to the House of Burgesses, at the beginning of each term, to abolish slavery. It never came out of committee, of course…like a tax cut bill today. I wonder how future generations will view us in 200 years. Will they condemn us for driving gasoline cars? Would that be worthy of condemnation if my 4th great grandson thought I was terrible? In the study of history, one must always look at the times. “Judge not, lest ye be judged” is quite applicable.

Graysonret…you can bank on something about our society (no matter

even be for electing a half black president and calling him black, who
knows. The okays of the past will always be the no nos of the future
