So say The Guardian and Drudge. I’m skeptical, but bracing for the worst.
Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.
Obama’s advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton’s foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.
Reader Mark M. writes: “I would rather see Hillary as Sec of State for 4 yrs than on the Supreme Court for life.”

Doesn’t the Sec of State have to actually DO WORK? I cannot picture the scenario where either of the Clintons actually perform WORK.

I am confused about what Hillary gets out of this. She will find herself at odds with Obama and get booted in a year or two, tops. Then she will have lost her Senate seat and destroyed any chances for her SCOTUS appointment.
The only person who wins is Obama who can now blame any failure in foreign policy on Bush or Hillary for years to come and destroy the one obvious rival to his power.
Think Madeline Albright…. I guess the Democrat requirement for the position is thick thighs and fat ankles with a socialistic brain…oooooh did I just say that? I’m a baaaaaad man.

Hold your friends close and your enemies closer. Though it gives Sen Clinton a bigger stage but it gets her out of the Senate where she could cause problems. Time will tell if it was a good move or not.
Third place is better than nothing, right? She’ll take it. She has no other choice. The Clinton’s glory days are over. This is the only way for her to remain “relevant”. Otherwise, she’ll just be a senator who once ran for President who’s married to Bill.

On the bright side, Hillary may be the only one Obama puts in the cabinet who has what Jesse Jackson wanted to cut off of him.

In four years (actually, more like “in 4 months”) Americans will want to dump Obama. She’s putting herself in a “Colin Powell-Maverick” place, she “spoke truth to power” but “power” wouldn’t listen. If she gets booted -she warned them, etc. I think it’s a good place to position herself for some serious backstabbing and campaigning in 2012.
Well, if anything, the Democrats are proving experience isn’t necessary for at least two of the top three jobs in the country. At least Hillary has experience in dodging sniper fire, all Obama did was hang with people who planted bombs.

But, Hillary get’s co-opted as SecState and Obama’s failures become HER failures. It will be pretty hard to run against someone when he is blaming YOU for causing all the foreign policy problems you are pointing out.
I don’t see this as the smart move for her.
Wouldn’t it just be perfect if NY elected a Republican to replace her and from that election they would lose their 60 vote “super-majority” in the US Senate. Can’t wait.
Why not? Since qualifications to be in politics aren’t required anymore (Obama, Hillary, etc.) why not her? After all, she can easily ride in with name recognition alone. No experience required!

I see your point, WE, and there is a risk. But I think Obama would look really silly trying to blame her for his decisions & actions. She already has a good sized powerbase and a gig as SOS just adds more gravitas. I’d agree with you if she personally did a major flub-up in an blatantly obvious way it wouldn’t help her.
The Clintons, and she certainly, have never acted outed of altruism, so if this is offered and she accepts, I tend to think she has something bigger in mind down the line before too long.
If Obama offers it he’s either an idiot or he’s following the old advice about “keeping your enemies near you”. Or, more likely, he’s both – an idiot who’s heeding advice to put a short leash on her.
But we will see, so far it’s just speculation.
I just wonder after Hillary’s first trip abroad spreading the Obama message her cry will be lyrics from a Warren Zevon song:
“Send lawyers, guns, and money….”

SoS Clinton would be a big win for the Oborgama because it would be a twofer deal. Both Bill & Hill would be out on the trail and out of his hair, at least as a starter. My guess, she’ll ‘retire’ in two years or less to start to work on 2012 election, sooner if Obama really messes up early.

Well, this may not be smart move for Hillary, but it could be good for Republicans. If she becomes Secretary of State and Obama’s administration proves to be a bust (which we all know it will), Republicans will have one less competitor to worry about in the 2012 presidential election.
I’m actually shocked she took the job. I figure her ego is too big, to simply follow in the footsteps of people like Mandeline Albright and Condi. Well, I guess the the position can be as big as the person filling the role, and what they make out of it.
Or it gives Hillary an opportunity to screw things up royally from the inside out. She’s privy to much more intelligence now. She could have a hand in making life hard for Obama in an international sense, and then swoop in to rescue in 2012 while resigning her post. It’s just a thought.

If Hilldabeast is to run in 2012 she will have to launch a primary campaign and form a committee at least six months before the start of the primaries. So, the longest she can be SecState is about 2 to 2 1/2 years.
I still don’t see the up side in this for her. I see a few reasons for Obama to choose her. Even the DailyKooks claim it is a “win-win” scenario but they fail to list one “win” for Hilldabeast.
I just don’t see being the “third female SecState” as being that big a deal. I suspect she will play this up and decline at the last minute. We should expect some drama.

If the offer were made I think that might be the wisest choice, WE. To be courted, but refuse. That way she could attack Obama unfettered over the next 4 years.

Hillary is a known article with a built in fan base to rally and tap for cash. I think she could wait till the last minute, especially if she decides to run 3rd party.
However, I don’t think this will happen. Things would have to go horrifically wrong during Obama’s first term for her to risk her political future like that.
Although, Teddy K, came out pretty unscathed in 1980. I don’t know we’ll see. Either way things would have to go really, really bad for Obama for her to run in 2012.

I reluctantly agree. I understand, trying hard to be fair, that as senator, HRC has been fairly good on constituent services (except for the military). I think she will try to do the job as Secretary of State well, if she accepts it, even if only to provide a platform or record for future ambitions.
Obama’s great personnel judgment continues to stupefy. This choice hasn’t got a thing to do with lifetime achievement—-because she has none.
If this lady is as productive at the Sec. of State post as she was as N.Y. Senator, it might be a plus for Conservatives.
She knows nothing about foreign affairs, and moreover I believe that she has very little interest in it as well. Her political grandstanding has always been solely targeted at acquisition of personal power, and nothing else.
I don’t think such a choice would bode well for relations between the state and defense departments (as if they were ever that great.) I’m also predicting that Major General Barbara Fast will get one of the intelligence directorships (NSA most probably), which will be… interesting.
