Restaurant bullied by anti-Prop. 8 mob offers up payment

This story keeps getting more pathetic.
Diana West first alerted me to the plight of the El Coyote Mexican Cafe, whose manager donated $100 to the Prop. 8 campaign. A mob of gay marriage activists browbeat her into tears and guilt over the contribution. They threatened the restaurant with boycotts and protests.
And now, the restaurant’s employees have coughed up a peace offering. A bribe. A form of jizya. Whatever you want to call it, it’s sad:
Employees of the Los Angeles restaurant that came under fire this week after a manager gave $100 to the campaign to ban same-sex marriage in California said they had made a $500 contribution to the advocacy group that is raising money to challenge Proposition 8.
The Thursday online donation to Equality California, an advocacy group for the gay and lesbian community, came at precisely 7:22:03 p.m., about 22 minutes into a planned demonstration outside the restaurant’s doors for the second night in a row.
“It will go toward our work, and our work includes working to overturn Proposition 8,” said Ali Bay, a spokeswoman for Equality California. “We’re working legislatively and through the courts to promote equality for the [lesbian and gay] community.”
Over the last week, online social networking sites and blogs have urged people to boycott El Coyote Mexican Cafe on Beverly Boulevard because of the $100 donation by Marjorie Christoffersen, a manager at the restaurant and a daughter of El Coyote’s owner.
Christoffersen, a Mormon, met with protesters Wednesday, and at one point broke down in tears. But some activists said they still faulted her for making the donation.
According to another manager, Arnoldo Archila, El Coyote employees pooled their money to make the donation — though it wasn’t clear who actually contributed. He said Christoffersen was not involved in the decision.
“Maybe it’s a way to say sorry, that we have always tried to be a charity place, that we donate to a lot of places,” Archila said. “It’s something to show that we can help also.”
Manager Larry Crenshaw gave $50 to “try to smooth things over” and counter the boycott. He said the protests had started to affect employees.
One server called in Thursday worried about going into work. Thursday night crowds grew to about 200 people, and customers leaving the restaurant were called vulgarities, Crenshaw said.
Diners at one table had to be compensated for their $50 tab because their night had been ruined, and patrons celebrating a birthday at an outdoor table had to endure protesters late into the evening, he said.

Yah…cause running by the American voters NEVER works. 30 states and counting!
This is more than pathetic. Brownshirt tactics are the last refuge of the “tolerant” left. This restaurant should have told them to go to hell, then offered a 50% discount to ALL diners, which would have been cheaper than giving in to the protesters. Then they should have called the police and had the idiots arrested for disturbing the peace, etc.
Gosh – it’s almost as bad as a Dixie Chicks boycott.
Don’t give in! If you give in to bullying tactics the bullying will never stop.
If they take over the marriage redefiniton debate and win it, then freedom of speech is next, followed by religous liberties.
This is a systematic assault on the foundations of all mankind. We have seen this before in history, where it leads, and the end results.
So anyone feeling faint hearted, buck up and keep fighting for the proven structure of society!
Why wasn’t there anyone around to help the restaurant? c’mon these tactics need to be met head on.
Yahoo news has a story up now about the incidents of hate related to the Obama win. You won’t see a story on the incidents of violence and hate coming from the homosexual movement.
al-Gayda strikes again.
It’s nothing like a Ditzy Twits boycott.
People didn’t browbeat, bully and intimidate people, curse them as they left their concerts and extort money from them.
Lol @ bigange. ahahahhhahah, funny.
Intimidation and threats = the homosexual way of getting what they want
How is this any different from the mafia?
I see they learned their tactic at the “Jesse Jackson Shakedown School”
(How much is Jesse charging tuition)
Al Gayda – HAHAHAHAHAHA
Maybe the Mexican restaurant can drop an MOAB on the protestors (Mother of all Burritos).
Al-Gayda? That is so funny. BigAnge, you get the award for the day.
It’s funny, but its sad, too, because its accurate.
Extortion is a crime.
Intimidation is a crime.
You will notice there are no group coming to the defense of these people. No ACLU. No freedom or other civel liberties groups.
The perverted homosexual radicals have no desire for peace or rule of law. If I worked at that place I’d have a gun nearby because you never know what they will do next.
When talking about that particular crowd, that MOAB’s success is contingent on what it is stuffed with….;)
To those thinking you can buy your way out of the perverted homosexual onslaught, you are just wasting your money. Appeasment does not work. It only emboldens them to do it more often and to others. You will be paying them until you have nothing left and they will still blame you.
Appeasment leads to collapse.
Criminal charges need to be filed against every one of the perpetrators of this extortion … sounds exactly like the old Mafia “protection money” scheme to me …
The gays are the haters here.
But, but governator approves!!!
All of this nonsense because people are too bigoted to allow consenting adults the freedom to do as they wish. Allowing gay couples to marry does not affect anyone else’s life, liberty, or property. A truly limited government wouldn’t have a say in who can and who can’t get married. This is ludicrous.
LOLROF !!! Listen up al-Gayda, you lost, get back in the closet.
This is just sad. Whatever happened to having a spine? Seriously, if I lived near there, I would have gotten people together to eat there every single day in support – until they pulled this garbage.
My mind keeps going back to that rot-gut parade they have every year. It’s not about marriage – it’s about rebellion against (add your own thoughts/beliefs here).
Nice heteronormal restraunt you’ve got here. Wouldn’t want anything to happen to it…
Harrassing restaurant patrons? Sounds like disturbing the peace. Where were the police? Sounds like a hateful, angry mob. Oh, but they support “gay” causes, and may be “gay” themselves. Oh, they’re adorable!
I’m sorry that the employees of El Coyote are paying to cut their own throats, as that is what donations to the anti-Prop 8 crowd will do now. Hopefully only figuratively, although it doesn’t look too safe to me.
And all this protesting is over one $100 donation. THAT is pathetic.
As noted about, law enforcement needs to be out there arresting everyone who makes threats and blocks access to and from the restaurant. (There are ways to protest without violating the rights of others.)
If I lived out there, I would eat there–often.
Can you say, “RICO?”
what is there to challenge..the people have spoken…. SORRY, what was I thinking…
That is really sad. At the same time, I think El Coyote could have resisted but it sounds like they have a divided staff.
It would be a nice move if the activist group would return the donation and say they weren’t going to accept money that came as a result of extortion.
Someone needs to let Robert Fulghum know that he needs to revise his ‘All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten’ rules. Rule #1 should now be:
If at first I don’t get what I want, I’ll thcweam and thcweam until I’m thick.
Feel free to add your own.
Time for El Coyote to hold a Bike Night.
The way it is….
If you are going to do business with the public, you are going to have to be politically correct.
If groups other than conservatives are going to exist, then they are going to have to be put up with.
We have let the cockroaches breed to the point where they not only influence things, but now run the country.
This isn’t helpful either…they have moved into the schools with the same message.
Wow. Now bribery. Can’t wait to hear some of the defenders of this behavior explain why this is okay.
Hence the need for some new rules. In fact I just thought of another one, rule #2:
When given an inch, make sure you take a mile and don’t stop.
This is also appropriate regarding the many bailouts we’re facing.
Thuggery and extortion, Jesse Jackson must be proud.
Shame on El Coyote for succumbing to the homosexual fascistii. If your support is based on deep-rooted conviction, you do not cave. You do not cower. You do not relent. You do not tire. I will be in LA next weekend and I look forward to proudly eating at El Coyote–and offering my support to Mrs. Christofferson. As for Mr. Smooth-it-over, I plan to have a discussion about cultivating some huevos rancheros.
Deeper shame on the homosexual high-heeled, jack-booted thugs. This is “progressive politics” at its finest: Don’t win? No problem. Just start shouting and threatening until you get your way. It’s exactly how a two year-old gets what he or she wants in the toy room.
Pathetic.
Free Fruit Rolls to every Fairy? Has John Edwards been heard from? Stop all AIDS research?
These cowards go for the weakest link. They wont protest in front of a black church, though black votes sent the vote over the top in favor of the ban. Why? They know they would get their aZZes beat. (Just like you wont see Bill Mahar make jokes about Mohammed while he rips apart anything Christian..what a man!!). So they knock crosses out of the hands of 80 year old white women. How brave. And they bully this restaurant extorting $$ because the restaurant doesnt want to be boycotted. lol…These people are first class fascists, who apparently do not like the idea of the democratic voting process. Eventually they will protest rudely in the wrong crowd, and get whats coming to them.
Good point, sbw999. I noted to my wife yesterday that Mormons will not fight back, because it’s not in our nature to confront as such. Most Mormons have a desire to be good neighbors, to show charity and to be fair. This woman is simply displaying those traits.
Of course, none of this matters to the homosexual fascistii. They just smell blood in the water and become more frenzied and zealous in their hatred, bigotry and intolerance.
The irony…
And Katie Couric et al will be right there with the tv cameras again. Count on the MSM to paint 98% of Americans as intollerant biggots.
jangar: it would be interesting if “the wrong crowd” were a traditionally-black congregation of some sort. What would The One have to say about his uniting powers and the bloc that voted for him at a 94% clip?
Oh well, never going to happen…as was so smartly stated prior: the homosexual fascistii would NEVER attack a Black church. These velociraptors go for the weak spots in the fence–where there is no resistance.
Ok, which is it? Velociraptors or Al-Gayda?
I’m confoosed…
Depends on who you ask. If you go on the gay opinion, they’ll be able to marry and spontaneously fulfill the purpose of marriage–having children. Chaos theory will take over and “life will find a
gayway.” Right?Sounds like extortion to me.
Of course, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been getting away with this type of ‘boycott until you may me’ activity for years. What’s new.
…you know, because same-sex attraction is natural. Nature would just “change” thousands of years of genetic reality and physiological design in a generation.
Until you PAY me.
sorry.
Hmmmmm …. must be some more of the “change we can believe in”.
al-Gayda! Phallus Akbar!
Only when one believes in evolution and no absolute truth, anything goes baby!
There’s nothing illegal about boycotting a business. It’s a fair tactic.
That said, there’s no way these brownshirts can rouse the numbers to defeat a POSITIVE PATRONAGE campaign by supporters of Proposition 8!
Even as the morons who probably don’t even eat at El Coyote call for people to avoid the place, we can encourage people to make up for it by becoming regulars of the restaurant. For every bully who takes his business someplace else, we can supply two to six to pick up the slace (since traditional marriages have several kids, while homosexual ones…).
Can we begin a campaign to massivly boost the number of people eating at El Coyote? Miss Malkin, this is one way you can best help Marjorie Christoffersen!
(And where is Mitt Romney during all of this anti-Mormon hatemongering?)
That’s called extortion, it is against the law – Every where.
So was sodomy
Oh Lawdy. How about instead of breaking down in tears and caving, she instead told them to get away from her property or else she was going to INCREASE her support and become even more active to do anything she could to defeat them.
Give me a break. This is the whole reason for the downfall of western/Bristish/American society. It all stems from ‘Everybody Is A Winner’. The first time someone challenges us, we cave and cant believe that everyone doesnt love us unconditionally.
By the way, Bash Back is, well, back.
They trashed a Mormon church in Olympia, and their message is clear to all religious institutions:
The best part of that link is the accusation religious people are incapable of critical thinking. This, levied by people who think burning down churches, vandalizing them, and extortion are the hight of civil discourse.
This is all-out cultural warfare, people.
How, now, will Omu and the rests defend these actions?
I’ll even go one step further in the decline of Western civilization. CROSSWALKS!!!!!! When some idiot decided to make a law that a pedestrian has the right of way to an oncoming car – That summed it up right there. The first day I moved to Berkely some idiot came as close to dying as he probably ever came. I had never seen one of those pedestrian rules signs before and he stepped right in front of me. (I didnt stop either because there wasnt time to lol)
Hey PARENTS!! Tell your child they are really a loser unless they do something in life and DONT WALK IN FRONT OF A MOVING CAR! (theres a new study out that shows that young adults cant hack it because their expectations in life are TOO unrealistic.)
Btw… How the heck can a phenotype that prefers sexual partnerships that CANNOT PRODUCE VIABLE OFFSPRING possibly be the result of natural evolution???!!!!!
Heredity Chart: Evolutionary Dead-End of Pure Homosexual Preference
You can’t have it both ways, libs.
Bada-bing. Great point!
Which is why they have to take the kids us “breeders” have and indoctrinate them.
They were merely gays before (with all the legal protections needed).
Now, because of their hysterical bed-wetting thuggishness, they’re f’ing fags again.
Resistence breeds resistence; and “no”, we can’t “all just get along”.
Can’t remember the last time I laughed this hard, this early in the morning. Well Done!!!
Please forgive me, but I am totally stealing the al-Gayda reference… it is a brilliant and fitting analogy of the militant gay left.
Regarding the evolution of homosexuality question, there are a few different theories out there. The main one is based on animal studies which basically show that homosexuality in animals is really bisexuality, so for various reasons certain species may engage in homosexual relations but still mate and breed with the opposite sex… so it doesn’t really reduce their reproductive fitness.
Secondly it is not really clear that homosexuality is genetic. But if it isn’t genetic, that is not the same thing as saying it’s a choice. For instance it could be some kind of imbalance created by conditions in the womb- like fetal alcohol syndrome. If that is the case, there is no gene for selection to act upon, so the question is moot.
regardless, I don’t really care, I agree with Gorebot, they have become f’ing fags again.
Animals do what animals do…chase each other and hump…they have no conscious soul.
Nice threadjack. There is no excuse for what happened at Mountain Meadows, but the Church itself had nothing to do with it. One congregation that was extremely over-paranoid decided to take matters into their own hands rather than wait for word from Salt Lake. The messenger just happened to show up a couple of days later saying “Don’t touch them!”
El Coyote Cafe lost an excellent PR opportunity. Had they publicly supported their employee’s right to free speech and supported the protestors right to free speech, they would have looked much better and possibly diffused the situation. Now they just look like the cowards they are.
Not to mention the fact that it happened 150 years ago. Get over it.
SoCal = Bill Maher?
And looking it up, appears most of the settlers were from Missouri (where it was still perfectly legal to shoot Mormons on sight). No wonder they were paranoid.
On-my-soap-box said: (#59)
Not quite. Sodomy is usually a victimless crime (assuming consenting adults in private)–extortion is never victimless.
Is El Coyote in Mountain Meadows?
Or is it located at Haun’s Mill?
What does either have to do with this? I usually like what you have to say, but I’m a little confused at the venue into which you’ve chosen to inject a 150 year-old incident for which the Mormon church’s leadership–the top–has officially apologized.
What’s your point?
Tell it to al-Gayda
Prop. 8 Campaign Threatens Business Owners
SoCal: Read Turley’s research–published in the official LDS monthly magazine Ensign if you still want to go down that road.
Unrelated to me, unless you’re comparing the rogue actions of a violent few in both instances. If that’s the case, I think we’re all in agreement that what the Cedar City residents did in 1857 is just as reprehensible as what the homosexual fascistii are doing today. Fewer deaths, but no doubt driven by the same blinded rage.
Where’s the forced extortion, Mookie?
Or are you just holding out for a murder…in order to justify it as deserved?
Because that’s what this is coming to.
It may be time to start boycotts of our own. If a business is known to support militant gay causes or other affronts to decency or liberty, why do conservatives and traditionalists patronize it?
Looks like a fight’s brewing and we should be fighting back and stop cowering.
Cowards.
Mookie: Regarding extortion: “The actual obtainment of money or property is not required to commit the offense. Making a threat of violence or a lawsuit which refers to a requirement of a payment of money or property to halt future violence or lawsuit is sufficient to commit the offense.”
In this case, Protect Marriage’s only “threat” was to “publicize the names of businesses who supported the opposition to Prop 8.” Much like publishing the names of “johns” who solicit prostitution or the “Scarlet Letter” concept.
No vandalism. No graffiti. No threats of violence. No broken windows. No harassing of patrons.
Do you see an apples-to-apples comparison here that I’m missing?
What a stupid, idiotic response.
The mafia used to do this. I think the gay activists need to be charged under RICO the same way they would be.
What does the law say? If you are eating in a restaurant and these people threaten you and take away your right to privacy and ruin the value of what you are spending money on then is that a tort? Is it an assault? Can you defend yourself and if so with what level of force? Can you use mace or pepper spray in California?
Is there a Lawyer in the house?
Off topic: Sorry for the multiple pings. I was trying to fix the video play on my blog and realized that apparently my trackback to this post wasn’t going through so it was still in cue to ping.
So…sorry for that and … my trackback didn’t go through.
Back to regularly scheduled commenting.
lifeofmind,
They are just waiting for someone to do that, someone is going to end up hurt or dead over all this.
Looks like someone didn’t read the post…
I was very young when this was happening but I remember that has the Gay rights movement was starting to pickup steam many in the church were not opposed to the grating of rights (ending the closeting of gays, equal employment, housing and visiting the sick*) but expressed a concern that this was really an attempt to impose gay marriage. I guess 30 years latter and after decades of reassurance that this was not the case we’ve learned the truth.
*I remember this wasn’t really an issue in the 70s because visitation wasn’t closed until the privacy activist got into the mix. i.e. Roe v Wade
She deserves to be boycotted if she and her employees surrendered to their demands so quickly. Just as we need steel spines on the bailout issue, we also need to stand up to these homosexual thugs. Shame on those who surrender and try and buy peace. They are condemned for their cowardice.
Al-Gayda? Phallus Akbar? I’m stealing it, too, that’s freakin’ awesome! That just SCREAMS for a parody video…
Why is this restaurant paying up? I don’t get it. I have relatives in LA who drove out to that side of town just to have lunch there after I told them about this story, they felt as horrible for that poor woman as I did. I kinda wanna call ‘em up and ask ‘em to rethink that position.
The trouble here is this: how do you stop such boycotts? I mean, they have the right to speak freely and assemble peaceably, and even though we think they’re being unfair we’d be toying with hate speech laws just like they are if we were to try to find a legal way to stop them. Unfortunately, I don’t think there IS a way to stop them.
Except maybe to boycott THEIR businesses.
Silly me. I read the preview like 10 times and didn’t see that until after I posted.
Seriously, Mel just had an idea.
There are gay publications in every major city. I’m not sure what LA’s is, but you can usually get them for free outside known gay establishments or on college campuses.
Go get one and find out which businesses are specifically catering to the gay community. Not all of them are gay-owned; some are big locals just looking for more exposure. Make a list of businesses–doctors, dentists, furniture stores, bookstores, anything and everything you can find–and organize boycotts against them until the gay community stops their BS.
If you work hard enough at it, you’ll certainly get attention. Get enough and they may cry about it, but you’ll eventually win.
I wouldn’t worry about the No on 8 thugs ever being charged with anything–much less brought to trial or convicted. Remember that all of this is happening under the watchful eye of the Ninth Circuit judges of the Republic of Kalfornistan.
As for the elephant, SoCal, I guess I’m still missing the point and not seeing it in the room. I guess that makes me blind man #3.
Absent an edict from the prophet Brigham Young, the actions of the Cedar City mayor had no official sanction or “blessing” of the church, and were simply violent acts carried out by people who were out of control.
If that’s the corollary you’re trying to point out, then I see it. Absent that, I’m still groping at the trunk thinking I’ve got a snake here.
The obvious difference here is that I have yet to see a “gay mouthpiece” (why not Mayor Gavin?) come out and ask the homosexual fascistii to respect the rule of law. Anyone have anything on that?
It has to do with perspective and learning humility… but all in all, still a cool poem.
you should try it sometimes!
Wrong
No, it’s not. This is ugly, and this is bad.
And no one on the left is really drawing a line. Bullying is okay. Assault is okay. Threats of violence are okay. Extortion is okay. Everything these Prop 8 protesters are doing is somehow explained as justifiable because they are “discriminated” against and didn’t like the vote.
The more rabid protesters are calling for blood – and nobody seems to care.
So I’m just curious, when it comes to that, are you going to link to articles and say since those who oppose gay marriage hurt/killed gays, that the murder of a Mormon (or someone else) isn’t as big a deal?
Because that seems to be your argument – everything these people are doing is okay because someone on the other side did it, too.
Again, stupid and idiotic. I don’t know how many times I need to spell this out for you. I don’t condone any violence or vandalism whatsoever. None. Zero. Nada. Zilch. I’ve said it at least a dozen times in various threads. For you to assume that I’d condone the murder of a Mormon or anyone else is both willfully ignorant and really f’ing stupid.
