Hispanic lawyers to Obama: Pay up

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 18, 2008 01:32 PM

The Hispanic National Bar Association has just sent out a press release gently reminding Barack Obama that he owes them — and they are not going to let him forget it:

HNBA Congratulates President-Elect Barack Obama and Urges Appointment of Hispanics to the Federal Judiciary and Executive Branch

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Last week, Ramona E. Romero, the HNBA National President, formally congratulated President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden for their victory in the 2008 presidential election. In her letter, Ms. Romero noted that two-thirds of the Latino electorate joined President-Elect Obama’s diverse base of supporters to contribute to his win on November 4th. The Latino vote was key in battleground states such as Florida, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. In fact, at least 10 million Latino voters cast ballots, an increase in participation of 32% from the 2004 Presidential Election.

“The power of the Latino vote was evident during this election,” said Ms. Romero. She added that “we are both hopeful and confident that President-Elect Obama will select cabinet members and other advisors whose backgrounds reflect the rich diversity of our Country and of the voters who supported his candidacy.” She concluded by stating that “the HNBA has called on the President-Elect to appoint more Hispanics to the federal bench, and urged him to make history yet again by nominating a Hispanic to fill the first U.S. Supreme Court vacancy that occurs during his term.” No person of Latino origin has ever served on the U.S. Supreme Court.

A copy of the letter to President-Elect Obama is available at the HNBA website, www.hnba.com.

You know, I don’t know anyone who would have a problem with this, if the hispanic nominee is the most qualified candidate for the job!! And here’s a hint… being qualified to preside over any court of law has ZERO to do with someone’s ethnic background.

I fear Obama’s first SCOTUS pick, however if there is some solace, it will be watching all the various groups lay claim and then watch Obama sweat over it. He will probably end up picking a white male since that is what the Clintonistas in the Obama White House will tell him to do.

Fortunately, these are rarely mutually exclusive.

Look, it is always incumbent upon whomever is doing the hiring to put competence and qualifications first. But that said 99% of the time, there is no magical “best person for the job.” There are many qualified candidates from which to choose, all of whom will bring some specific strengths and weaknesses.

Accepting that, what is wrong with having the additional bonus of actually having an ethnically and/or “genderly” diverse bench?

And while we are at it the only person in recent memory who has tried to put identity politics above qualification (try, just try to set aside your ideological biases and I will do the same) when it came to SCOTUS was W. when he nominated Meirs.

The real hell begins when a biased ethnocentric group has been around long enough to become teachers, lawyers, judges and politicians.
When laws for quotas for biased hiring, promoting and anti-assimilation is rubber stamped by the courts and law enforcement and government officials and employees are force fired out of jobs so highly nationalistic minoirties can compound the ethnic bias up and down the line fed ever more by public money.
When your children come home from school ashamed of who they are and people you see who have a union or government job or government contract isn’t very diverse anymore.
Your either living in California or it’s already too late where your are too.
Was this diversity ideal supposed to end with one dominant ethnic group with all of the enforced double standards in their favor?
Because if it is, why did we ever start, when could have stayed with the same laws we had before 1964.

Accepting that, what is wrong with having the additional bonus of actually having an ethnically and/or “genderly” diverse bench?

There is no need to mandate or play race favors. It is not how to select the right person for a job.

It’s not a bonus to our judicial system to promote people based upon race it’s a fallacy.

If Obama was so diverse he would have some gun toting rednecks in his administration. I’m not holding my breath on that one considering his stance to ban what he tries to claim are “weapons that belong in foreign armies”. Attaching crime to owning inanimate objects and also discriminating based upon that is just as problematic for Obamunists to wrap their heads around.

Again, you are setting up the false dichotomy that one is being promoted because of race OR because of qualifications.

Yup. I guess I don’t get why it’s so hard to conceive of the idea that a Hispanic person might just be the most qualified person, or among the group of potential appointees that’s most qualified.

Because if it is, why did we ever start, when could have stayed with the same laws we had before 1964.

Oh, that’s a great idea. Hell — why not even go back to the ’50s? There was so much opportunity for all in those days…

I have not set up any false claim. I am saying that selecting the right person for the job in the Supreme Court should not be a race game. Nothing more. Therefore I disagree with HBNA and what they represent.

The rednecks are watching and judging. Obama did not win by a large margin so whatever he does negatively to usurp power will also backfire.

I don’t buy the concept that his diversity selection is the answer to soothing the American populace and governing soundly.

Qualifications are just that. They are not based upon race but on skills. Race is not a skill.

Will someone please start the Caucasion of Non-Hispanic Origin National Bar Association?

    Please.

    Also needed:

    - National Association for the Advancement of White People

    - National Council of The Race (non-Hispanic origin)

    - United Caucasion College Fund

    - White Congressional Caucus

It is totally ridiculous that people talk about being “post racial” just because Obama was annointed President.

Really what they mean is “down with whitey”. Let’s call a spade a spade here. If you are white, (which is a minority in some areas of the country) you are not entitled to be “proud of your heritage” nor create ethnocentric-based advocacy groups. Meanwhile, we can have National Council of La Raza (The Race) which promotes Hispanic agenda, NAACP which promotes Black agenda, Black Congressional congress, Black colleges, Hispanic Bar associations, and on and on and on.

It should be everyone is entitled to this self-segregation or no one is entitled to it. I am absolutely fed up!

Your argument rests on the premise that there is one “right person” for the job, which I find to be patently absurd.

If there is a pool of qualified candidates, both male and female, of all ethnicities, and you keep getting white guys, you don’t think there is something fundamentally wrong with that?

And while we are at it the only person in recent memory who has tried to put identity politics above qualification (try, just try to set aside your ideological biases and I will do the same) when it came to SCOTUS was W. when he nominated Meirs.

    ???

Meirs wasn’t an “identity politics” pick. She was an in-your-face incompetent CRONY pick – like most of W.’s appointments.

It was only after W. decided to reward her “loyalty” with a SCOTUS appointment that the marketing team went around trying to justify her based on gender (and religion, too…)

    W. was just as shameless as any other post-Reagan politician when it came to identity politics marketing – but the pick had nothing to do with it. It was allll about her being a FOW (Friend of W).

Thankfully the conservatives recognized what he was doing, and smacked him on the knuckles pretty hard for it, too.
