The Obamamobile: Drive as I say, not as I drive
Well, who is surprised by this story about the “monster gas-guzzling” Obamamobile? Once a Drive as I Say-er, always a Drive as I Say-er:
On the campaign trail, Barack Obama promised to get a million plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015. His own new presidential limousine will be far from green, however.
The Obamobile being prepared for the president-elect is said to be a monster gas-guzzler made by General Motors, the troubled car giant. It will look like a black Cadillac but is built like a tank. A spy photographer who tracks down future car models for magazines snatched pictures of the heavily disguised first-car-in-waiting when it was being road-tested last summer.
The armour-plated car, which has a raised roof, windows up to 5in thick, extra-strength tyres and a body made of steel, aluminium, titanium and ceramics, is thought to be based on a GMC 2500 truck that gets less than 10 miles to the gallon. Three cars are believed to be in production so that two can serve as decoys.
While security is paramount – the car is built to survive roadside bombs as well as gunfire – there are hybrid four-wheel drives on the market, such as Ford’s Mercury Mariner, which some critics believe could have been adapted for the president.

If the car was built last summer, Obama had nothing to do with the design since he wasn’t even the nominee yet. That’s the Secret Service’s doing.
They will never stop trying to force their will on to the market. If eco cars were in demand, the market would supply them. You know, supply and demand Mr. Obama. Oh, that’s right, socialism doesn’t allow for a free market to function.

I don’t know how much leeway the Secret Service gives with those types of decisions. He may not have any choice in the matter. That would be a good thing for Michelle to look into.

Considering he is to be President I think they need him in an armored car. If having it armored causes it to get 10 miles a gallon so be it. Theres nothing wrong with using a gas guzzler, as long as you genuinely need it. Obviously Mr. Obama, as well as every other president need a heavily armored car, to protect themselves from Obama Derangement Syndrome. Lots of conservatives and white supremesists want him dead from what i can hear talking around here in N.C.
If the government gave him leeway to not prove that he is eligible to be POTUS, I think they could budge on what kind of car he gets chauffered around in.

The President can always over-rule the Secret Service. Not that anyone wants the President in danger. Post-Presidency, Carter had like one Secret Service guy who would tag along, and Ford had a whole contingent, so I think a lot of it is the perceptions of the protectee.
But the do-as-I-say people always have excuses as to why they think they are special and you are one of the unwashed masses and must do their bidding. Conservatives think people are fine when left to make their own choices, those fit their needs.
We put up with it for eight years, and it is NOT OBS. If McLame had been elected, the MSM would be all over this. We are not out of control shaking hyperventilating slobering idiots, we are simply pointing out a point that if all was fair, the MSM would.

As much as I dislike Obama and think he’ll drive the country downward – I’ll let him slide on this one. Secret Service demands heavy protection for the President. And I know the MSM would rip on McCain if the situation were reversed, and I’d stick up for the Secret Service.
More than the car, because that doesn’t surprise me, is that I’m looking for an explanation as to *why* the Obama daughters aren’t going to public school.
Obama, like most Democrats, doesn’t support school choice, thereby severely limiting the number of children (mostly black, but other minorities as well) who can access good, private education at their parents’ discretion.
That’s a travesty, in my opinion.
Which is why I’m less convinced Obama and modern-day Democrats are socialists than I am convinced they are ELITISTS, a morphed form of socialism, wherein the hoi polloi need to do what they say, give up what politicians demand, and watch while the same politicians live high off the hog.

There are plenty, and will be plenty, of areas to criticize Obama. Using a Presidential limo that has clearly been in the works for awhile and gets poor gas mileage due to the armor it requires is not one of them.
Obama is the president of the United States. He needs vehicles like this. Most people who drive grotesquely polluting cars do not need them. Easy.
True conservation is only for the little people, since there are more of us than the ecowacky libs. The gas we don’t use will fuel their cars and private planes.
Michelle, I’m with you 99.9% of the time here. I even sent you a scoop (I hope) on a ‘racism’ story in Maine that stinks like a French you-know-what at low tide (i.e. 20 KKK-defaced signs on a Portland bike trail conveniently discovered by Mr. Steve Wessler, the Portland Executive Director of the Center for Prevention of Hate Violence, of all people).
But I have to give Obama a pass on this. I wouldn’t even think they could make a ‘green’ car that could handle all that weight, or take off in speedy fashion from an incident.
Perhaps the MSM would be all over this story should it have been McCain instead, but we don’t have to be like them, do we?
It’s not like there will be no shortage of issues to cover vis-a-vis Obama and the Democrat Congress, though I will confess here I am delighted at the outrage of sites like KOS over the Democrats’ refusal to can Lieberman, or over Obama’s ‘pro-war’ cabinet picks. At least we had to wait for Bush to take office before real disappointment set in.
I guess the moral for KOS et al is: the more things Change, the more things stay the same.

The issue MM brings up is in regards to the heavy dose of hipocracy we are about to receive over the next 4 years; In an Obama administration, the free market be damned; Vehicle choices for him, but not for thee; School choices for him, but not for thee; Free speech for him, but not for thee; It will go on and on, the tentacles of government intrusion and intervention like we have never seen.
It really must be a slow news day. Isn’t Obama’s personal car is a hybrid SUV? If he spends his personal money on a hybrid automobile, he isn’t a hypocrite for requesting that other citizens do the same. If the Secret Service thinks that the GM-designed automobile is the safest for the POTUS, then so be it. They have more experience protecting high-profile targets than any of us, so I feel comfortable trusting their judgment.

The car is equiped with all kinds of new technology but can’t be made “green’ because of the weight. “Green’ is garbage but he did promise to be the ‘green’ President, among other liberal ’causes’.

Uh – the car has been under development for months. It is no different, except for various upgrades, than any other Presidential limo made over the last half-century or so. And it was designed, built and paid for without the involvement of the current or incoming Administration, under the auspices of the Secret Service.

This is probably one telling difference between modern conservatives and modern liberals: Liberals expect “their” leader to behave like an all-wise potentate above scrutiny does not serve their term in office but RULES (in office) -I am using the words of one of Obama’s relatives here who recently said on I believe CNN that “…Obama is READY TO RULE…”- whereas conservatives view “their” leader with a juandiced, often suspicious eye, and expect him/her to SERVE IN OFFICE, not be their dominator.

That’s the exact opposite of reality. I know how eager you guys are to dump Bush in a gutter these days, but it takes a breathtaking amount of dishonesty to coherently argue that the Republican base didn’t follow along in Bush’s missteps with whole-hearted enthusiasm. As far as I can tell, many Republicans still support the worst of his ideas, like torture and the war and tax cuts, and it’s hard if not impossible to find any examples of critical or suspicious conservative writing from the first five or six years of this administration.
Obama, on the other hand, isn’t even the President yet. It’s impossible to say whether or not his supporters are just blindly following the man at this point, simply because there’s not enough data to make the judgment. The volume of the criticism and dissatisfaction with Obama on the left is already infinitely louder than anything I’ve ever detected from the right with regards to George Bush.
If you’re a conservative, chances are that whatever you believe is 180 degrees from the reality. That’s what’s happened here.
The more indestructable a vehicle is, the more ENERGY it will take to dismantle it, and then to scrap it…is that being green…?

If you’ll notice, I said the first five or six years. You’re talking about the last two. There’s no conflict here, you’re saying you’ve been critical for two years, I was saying you weren’t critical for the previous six.
But what happened two years ago? What was the event that triggered the criticism? Obviously that event was the 2006 mid-terms, when the Republicans lost. Which is intolerable to the conservative base. For the conservative base, as long as you’re winning, you can go anywhere. You can start pointless wars, you can round up people and torture them, you can spy on American citizens without a warrant, but if you lose… that’s unacceptable, and that’s when you start criticizing.
However, you’re totally abdicating your responsibility as a voter if you let the leaders you elect get away with not hearing from you for 6 years. They start ignoring you, and that’s how you end up with bad, bad policy. I voted for Obama, and I am looking forward to criticizing him. That’s how you get better policy, and that’s how you get accountability. You should try it!

I seem to remember George Bush enjoying approval ratings close to 90%. I also seem to remember Democratic minorities and majorities in Congress signing off on a quite a few of Bush’s big policy proposals, like the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, the new FISA regulations, and most recently, the bail-out. In fact, tt can be argued fairly easily that Democrats in Congress only cut George Bush slack.
To put the shoe on the other foot, if there’s an unprecedentedly catastrophic terrorist attack in the first year of Obama’s term, he gets a pass, right? All the Republicans are going to rally behind him, and he’ll hit that 90% approval mark too, do ya think?

As for the pointless war, it was a defunct and corrupt United Nations that made that one happen. Not to mention intelligence from many countries, many who turned against the US after finally enforcing for real the idle threats from the UN. Their criticism was because they got found out doing illegal deals with Iraq during the sanctions and the UN knew about it. Your boy wants to bow down to the UN. You see, corruption is still corruption, even if the media refuses to report on it.
The most pointless war was Bosnia. Clinton allowed the UN to use American troops to box in the Bosnians so they could get slaughtered by the Albanians. Just because the media made it out to be a heroic cause did not make it so.
