And now, the ski industry lines up
Sean Paige notes the latest special interest clamoring for a government boost: The ski industry.
Via the Denver Post:
“I think climate change is much more important than anything right now,” said Chris Diamond, head of the Steamboat resort. “I’m hoping the new president takes the 30,000-foot view. I mean climate change, we have got to fix this or we are all done.”
In that vein, 70 ski resorts across the nation are lobbying Congress for mandatory caps on carbon-dioxide emissions, hoping to decrease the amount of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
“A lot of people in the industry are very concerned about climate change and something will actually be done about it in this Congress,” Link said. “That’s the big one.”
Economic relief ranks up there too. Already the signs of tough economic times are hitting the ski industry, with declining early bookings. Severe drops in retail spending could translate into dips in vacations. And the ski industry needs vacationers.
“I see the No. 1 benefit of this election as one-party control,” said Vail Resorts chief executive Rob Katz. “We can take actions that get people feeling more confident and stable in the economy.”
One-party control The sky’s the limit. No failing business left behind.
Brrrr.

» RED ALERT: Obama Will Sign Senate Bill First; House Democrats Be Warned - Your 'Fixes' Will Likely Never See the Light of Day

you just need to learn to love big brother Michelle!
we all might as well get in line for the bailout, with money thats going to become worthless!!
we are slouching towards zimbabwe…but the democrats will keep voting for the people that destroy them. see detroit.
So this Rob Katz character is socialist… well well well…..
Dear Mr. Diamond,
Your 30,000 foot view (which is clearly influenced by your head up your a**) only requires a longer neck. Man, what a lot of chutzpah!
The bank of sonofdy only needs a 180,000 dollar bailout. Where do I apply?
Just another hog jockeying for position at the trough.
In spite of all the evidence to the contrary, deep down I never really believed that there were people this clueless out there.
Obama got elected, I should’ve known better.
This is a joke, right?
The ski industry?
YGBSM.
How much does a lift ticket cost?!?! You went into a business dependent on weather and you want a bailout?
Here in New England, the climate has been favoring the ski business. Last winter we had roof collapsing snowfalls. I went snowshoeing well into May. Right now, there is very little snow, but conditions are great for snow making. Here in Massachusetts, it has barely gotten above freezing in the past week. At ski resorts in NH, Vermont & Maine they have been able to make snow around the clock.
Please, give these people some of my tax dollars so I shell out $75 for a one day lift ticket.
How is the missus?
Wow! That’s really all I have to say.
Since I don’t ski, if the ski industry has its way, I’ll be left out. Where can I apply, so that I get to be included?
I need a federal grant so I can afford a house in Steamboat. Hah! I thought these libs were all “progressive” and champions of the little people. How come when ever they take over a community or city, prices sky rocket, pushing out the average wage earner? Examples: L.A., S.F., NYC, every quaint little town from Oxnard to Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Boulder, VAIL! Distribute the wealth my A–!
1. If this wasn’t such a serious thing, it’d be quite hilarious.
2. With all of this going on, I can’t imagine why Smith and Wesson, Remington, and Winchester don’t need any government assistance.
3. Cultural hegemony. It used to be shameful to get government relief. Now, it’s expected and called an “entitlement”. How do you take over a society? You change the very things that society agrees to call “common sense”. You change those baseline values. You change the country from the inside-out. Sounds like the goals of those who promise “hope” and “change” doesn’t it? Still I must ask, what about those of us who don’t wish to play along, who don’t like the “change” and look elsewhere for our “hope”?
If the current solar trends continue, it will soon be so cold that even the dumbest amongst us will realize Al Gore is an idiot.
I say we ask Al Gore to “prove it”, or shut up.
List of places to vacation at in the coming years:
VailSteamboat SpringsI’ll have to read the article to see which other destinations to remove from my list.
Maryland had snow last Friday and it’s been very cold for the past week. Global warming my a$$!
This is sick. Home builders are lining up for their billions too.
Why should we have to bail out everyone that can’t run a business?
Failure now rewarded in America!!
Since ski resorts in the west have enjoyed WONDERFUL conditions the past two years, let’s “celebrate” their good fortune and hit them with a windfall profits tax.
Change they can believe in. Climate change, ya right.
Again, who does the government go to when they need a bailout?
Seems like we are robbing us to pay them. What could go wrong?
Wait! If congress legislates a cooler earth to help the ski areas this will hurt the tourist areas like Florida with oceanfront beaches. So they will need to be careful about the details. Maybe a compromise can be worked out where it is very hot and sunny in areas with beaches and very cold and snowy in the ski resort areas. Shouldn’t be too hard since it has been shown we can cause hurricanes.
And we are now breathlessly waiting for Las Vegas, Reno, and all the casinos from coast to coast to line up for their piece of the bailout pie. Just think – all the poor gamblers no longer have any money to throw at them. It’s just not fair! Gambling deserves a bailout, too!

tarpon,
Sorry. AlGore is no idiot. His plan was brilliant! Start a non-profit company to sell carbon credits. Create a documentary that stupid people could fall for. Fly his fat arse all over the world while at the same time writing off the expenses as business AND donating money to his own non-profit company to “offset” his carbon use. He is triple dipping (at least) in reverse. Gets a business write off for promoting his “Jack Ass, The Movie Part BRR”, donates his own money to his own non-profit so he gets a tax credit and keeps his money too. He is brilliant. It is the people who buy into man caused Gorbal Warming that are the idiots.
I don’t ski, but I do go fishing. I am willing to except a grant to study the effects of global warming on nightcrawlers and minnows. This will have to be a long term study. I am willing to travel to as many lakes as possible. I will need a new bass boat and a steady supply of beer to undertake this very important study.
That’s been the case for some time. As you know, we are all winners and we all get trophies, even if we “lose”.
Sharp and to the point, MM! But the coolest line is highlighted above.
“NO Failures Left Behind!” should be President Obama-Pelosi-Reid’s latest tag-line.
My 100, 000 dollar view trumps his 30,000 foot view. Global Warming is a myth. Politicians love it (which should tell you everything you need to know). It has nothing to do with science. (And I am a Chemistry teacher who believes in the scientific method.)
Waiting for the “gaming” industry to get in line. After all, the
rubeslittle old ladiessuckersgamblers don’t have any more money toinvestcontributelose, all the casino owners and Indian tribes deserve to be bailed out, too.And that, my friends, is Socialism in a nutshell. Success is punished, failure is rewarded, and when the People learn this, production drops to nil (except when the rulers figure it out, and then Socialism quickly changes to to an Authoritarian regime at the point of a gun/bayonet).
And we will have Bush and his RINOs to thank for starting this, and we will see the blossom of Khrushchev’s promise under the Obama administration.
As a side note, has anyone else gotten a laugh at the assertion that the Clinton appointees Obama is bringing on board are somehow “Centrist”?
This plan comes from the Catholic church. They needed money to buy St. Peters Basilica. So they hired Tetsel to see “bones of saints.”.They would get a “sin credit” which paid for sins (like stealing, rape etc.).
Maybe this will cause another Reformation.
If I call myself a failure, can I get part of the pie?
Last season, Colorado had some of the best snow and ski conditions they’ve had in years, and so far it looks the same for this season with the base they already have.
Oh, by the way, Rob Katz… I will NOT be skiing at Vail Resort from now on. Business owners need to consider that their mouth and statements like this could do more harm to their bottom line than global warming/cooling/change (or whatever they call it now).
Because with the socialists in power the firearms industry is booming. Dealers can’t keep enough guns and ammunition in stock and can’t order replacements fast enough to keep up with demand.
Just a natural progression here folks …
Colorado Snowjob …

Help me Obi-Wan Obama. You’re my only hope.
Anyone else notice how conspicuously and shamelessly absent our trolls are at these posts that give us the news of each, successively more ridiculous, outrageous and disgusting bailout?
Where are our trolls?
What do they think of these bailouts?
And, I don’t want to hear any tu quoque BS about Halliburton, etc.
Where are they?
Any thoughts from them?
Anyone?
Anything?
Hello?
Bueller?
Buy guns, liquor and tobacco stocks. They always do well when the economy goes south. Maybe I should get a job with the ATF.
Interesting this would have something to do with the sun and not the idea that most Americans just watched their 401k’s evaporate because of CS2.0.
You should have seen the gun show this weekend. It was packed wall to wall. The main thing being purchased? AMMO and ar-15’s. With babies on the way i got…. a sweater.
Don’t you mean your 101k’s????
AMMO
considering the rising cost of brass per se..AMMO is the only asset that I know of that is not depreciating.
Most importantly, the ski industry is so vital to the US economy.
DUDE! You know … like gnarly, you know. I mean, fer sher, dig it?
It’s re-education camp for you!
Waiting for the “gaming” industry to get in line. After all, casinos need love, too. Particularly since fewer people are gambling. The only game in town these days is CS2.0, and it’s rigged for the house.
But wait — the ski industry should be fine once Obama lowers the ocean-levels, right? I mean, he promised! That will increase the amount of moisture in the atmosphere causing more snow to fall in the mountains. If they can just hang on until January, they should be alright.
My business is struggling, the bills are mounting as we head into winter, where do I sign up for my bailout??
I would recommend an AK-47…the people’s weapon…with lots of 7.62 x 39 ammo…the people’s ammo…they don’t jam as much as the AR..and you can get lots of good RUSSIAN AMMO..wolf….
power to the people!!
Next up, the Sex Workers Industry. Hey, the sagging economy is dealing a serious blow to the industry as fewer people are hiring prostitutes and going to strip clubs, buying porn, etc. Thousands of employees could get the shaft if Congress doesn’t pass a stimulus act quickly!
…still looking for ammo for that French rifle I was suckered into buying…
The AlohaGuy Big Wave Consortium feels that since 70% of your body is water, it is imperative that the government give us $20-30 billion to study the action of waves on the near shore environment. That is, the constant ebb and flow on the sand may or may not make a peaceful place to contemplate the stupidity of Congress. This money will allow us to test this out. It’s vital and too big for any of us…
Let them shoot cake…
Well, hey, Las Vegas and the entire state of Nevada depends on the gaming industry. With this whole crappy economy, we are losing revenue and unemployment is at a 23 year high. The view of the strip is marred with half-built casino/hotels because the credit isn’t flowing.
I propose that the feds give every American over the age of 21 some cash to travel to Vegas and gamble. Some will win, some will lose but Nevada will be bailed out. Our state is too big to fail.
Does it take the roll type, or plastic caps?
It may have been damaged when it was dropped….
Are you still out in Denver?
If we continue the way we are going (and I have no reason to think we wont) I really, really fear for my grandkids!
“The Brave New World”
Boycott Colorado which has become a people’s republic, ski in Utah which has better snow.
Michelle – six months ago I started a buggy whip company. However, due to the economic downturn, sales have dropped from two a month to 1 a month. Do I qualify for 1 million in aid? Thanks!
Are you kidding me? Most of the ski resorts in Colorado are leased from government land and the Forest Service dictates when the season is open.
When the government says you are closed – you are closed. One resort ended its season with more than 120 inches of snow left on the slopes. All of the seasonal workers from New Zealand, South Africa, South America, etc have to go back to school and base their travel on the closing date.
Early bookings may be down, but with $20 parking, $10 pizzas, 45 minute lift lines and no discounted sales, I havent seen the downturn yet this season. They should be able to make a profit off of me alone.
Since I am single white male and am personally subsidizing the whole rest of the country, if you all can send me a little extra of your cash, I will promise to increase the money I spend snowboarding this year (even if I have to contribute to every co-eds college fund too) and we can all bypass the government and cut out the middlemen.
I was stupid enough to actually pay for my Vail Resorts pass this year. The government can help the ski industry by refunding my ski pass. Then I can use it to stay at the expensive hotels at the base of Vail. That way the hotel industry won’t need to line up for a bail out.
After I got out of college, I went to Park City Utah and worked at Deer Valley Ski Resort for 4 years. Back then only the “Elites” came to Park City, and their was PLENTY of snow(1985 Record Snowpack) and honest to God I NEVER heard one word about “Global Warming”… Not from Jane Fonda, Not from Robert Redford (who happens to own Sundance Ski Resort in Provo Canyon).
So… We don’t like what we have to reap after we have trashed the GOP for ages here?
Heh, the democrats haven’t even started yet.
