Stupid business model of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 24, 2008 01:28 PM

A Seattle shop owner lets people pay whatever they feel like paying for her merchandise…

…and then wishes for “magic” to happen when she can’t pay her rent.

Well, given the nationwide contagion of bailout-palooza, maybe it’s not such a stupid business model after all.

Groan.

I got a chuckle out of this! How ironic!! She’s clearly not in tune with the business world/cycle.

Although she has an interesting theory, in the real world, her landlord has actual concrete bills (like rent) to pay with non-negotiable terms, deadlines, and CONSEQUENCES.

She can’t blame the economy for this one, she tried to circumvent economic principles and burned herself. Even kids playing store make up “real” prices and play with “real” money.

First of all, I think that last statement is a bit of a stretch.

Also, there are plenty of efficient, well run, sustainable non-profits out there. You need look no further than certain megachurches.

I also don’t think the aim of the government is to maximize profits, nor should it be. If that were the case, you would see government entering the free market even more so than they currently do. I do agree that efficiency is a concern. However, profit motives are not necessary for efficiency (see above).

Why do you? Really… why do you? Because you have a bleeding heart like this woman?

I don’t mean to be cruel… but, business isn’t built on charity, even the non-profits have a budget that they have to live on and what kind of costs they can live with. If this woman wanted to run a charity, then she should have realized she was going to have to get a real job to pay for her rent. Nothing is for free in a capitalist society.

The only reason we’re discussing this woman at all is she’s a small symptom of a larger problem in this country. This country is no longer built on hard work, sacrifice, and saving for what you want. It’s now built on unrealistic dreams/expectations, gimme gimme handouts, and doing little yet thinking that can still propel you into a multimillion dollar reality.

We have a whole generation of kids (the gen Y’ers) who are so arrogant that they think they’re special and can get anything they want because Mommy and Daddy have built their egos up so high. Plus, the self-esteem movement has cossetted people for the past 15-20 years where there is no failure, no competition, everything will be taken care of for you if you just buy into certain myths like doing the bare minimum and getting the same result or going to college yet failing to recognize the big debt you’ll have to pay back. We have so many overly educated nimrods who only know how to do one thing, yet we have nobody to replace those who do some of the most sought after work such as welding.

Look at the bigger picture, bluesoc. This woman is one of millions in this country who are living in a “My Little Pony” universe. I’ve seen it in 8th graders I’ve taught who argued with me about why I gave them a C for a paper in which they didn’t read the instructions or accomplish the objectives of writing a well-thought out paper.

Basically, people don’t know how to function in a society without having their ego stroked and their head patted with an atta boy! for good measure.

Theoretically no, but as a practical matter in the real world, people spend most efficiently when spending their own money on others. People spend less efficiently when spending their own money on themselves, and less efficiently still when spending other people’s on themselves. The least efficiency of all comes when people spend other people’s money on other people.

The amount of money spent does not decide efficiency. Rather, it is how that money is spent that is important.

It’s not that you spend money, it’s how you spend money.

Unfortunately, the public schools are pretty much run by idiots like Jane Horowitz. They have no comprehension of the value of money. The money is spent on over-inflated teacher salaries, useless administrators, and sub-standard education.

If we had a voucher system in our schools (a true voucher system, not a socialist sliding scale), we would see a vast improvement in the intelligence of our students.
