Thanksgiving Derangement Syndrome

A school fight breaks out over dressing students as Pilgrims and Indians.
Just dress all the kids up as yams and cranberries instead and be done with it.

You ought to try LIVING here!
LOL. You should know Chap, that would be demeaning and is strictly interdit. Really though, I don’t care if someone is gay or whatever they want to be. Had many gay friends and they were some the best friends I have ever had. I am just sick of the identity politics which ultimately leads to the kind of nonsense in this story where they start demanding Americans change traditions that are a part of how this great country was formed. For a lib you have a great sense of humor.
That would be the colonists, since they were the minority at the time?
Yams and cranberies though - I don’t know…The poor cranberry has felt the oppresive weight of being squeezed and crushed into pulp, while the mighty yam has been crowned with marshmallow - white and sweet - yes white - and the favorite of chilren of all ages. Pity the cranberry, do not mock it by dressing children up as a secondary side dish..
Great - the ACLU lefties have already CHRISTmas into Xmas. Now I suppose Thanksgiving will get turned into National Turkey Day? Funny how they don’t get too exercised about Easter, what with the boiled chicken-eggs and all.
What a shame that that mom of Seneca heritage doesn’t realize what a great opportunity she had to help with the festivities. She could have provided a unique perspective; instead, she’s just a party pooper.
Exactly. But how about “Silent Night” or “White Christmas”? Even Budweiser usually manages a mighty fine Carol.
“Messiah” I think is an Easter thing.
I adopt a safe harbor rule for any carol sung by Bing Crosby.
Thus ruleth I.
Or Ann Margret.
And lo…it shall be known as the “Stagecoach Exemption.”
And it was good.
I have some bragging rights at Thanksgiving. My ancestors sat at both sides of the first Thanksgiving table. My Pilgrim ancestor was William Brewster, the Elder. My Indian ancestor was Wamsutta, son of Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoags. I really love being a part of both sides of the history and am proud of my drop of Indian blood!! I’ll be darned if I let the PC idiots destroy the culture and heritage of my ancestors! We need to fight back every time and stop letting them win out of intimidation. That school must have their costumes…they are constitutionally guaranteed that right! WTF is going on in this country? We have to stop allowing the lunatics to run the asylum. That time is NOW!

remember
“Oh I yust go nutz at Crissssmas….”
Parents have almost ruined Little League, now Thanksgiving, geesh.
This lady is outraged at toddlers for dressing as pilgrims and Indians on Thanksgiving? Maybe her concerns would be better addressed by campaigning for text books and public school education do away with the politically correct, white washing of our nations history on ALL fronts good and bad in our public educational systems and the history books (if you can even call them that) used to indoctrinate generations.
Why is she not screaming about the politically correct history regurgitated up daily in our public schools? Perhaps then children’s Thanksgiving costumes would be less offensive to her.
Instead, she is fixated on the ridiculousness of bashing schools for allowing little ones to dress up for Thanksgiving (gasp). Yes, there’s liberal logic in play.
Let’s not go to the source and solve the problem, let’s just complain and create circular arguments about non-issues (pilgrim/Indian costumes) until the cows come home.
You haven’t lived until you have seen a Thanksgiving play at an elementary school in Hawaii.
You have Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, White (I don’t use the C word), Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Micronesian, and Portagee kids on both sides of the table. Cutest thing you ever saw.
Hey, I’m part Cherokee and I see nothing wrong with dressing up as either a Pilgrim or a Native American. What I DO mind is a society gone nuts (no offense, legumes) over Political Correctness.
I believe they are missing out on a true learning opportunity presented here.
Emphasis on the actual tribal names and their customs could be taught to the tykes. And they could also discuss the lives of the pilgrims and why they came to this land to freely practice their Christian beliefs…Oh, that would be wrong.
Sorry.
And I don’t consider “Rudolph,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” etc. to be carols. Songs, maybe. But I think of carols as more traditional music — “Carol of the Bells,” “Coventry Carol,” “Masters in this Hall,” “Silent Night,” etc.
Free plug for XM radio — the Pops Classical station goes to traditional Christmas music (vocal/choral and instrumental) from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I haven’t been subjected to the barking dogs or “Grandma Got Run Over” in years. Worth the price of an annual subscription just for that.

“Ya shure you betcha” was taught to me like I’d dropped off the nearest starship…I did forget to note that for those evenings spent with innebriated Norwegians you have to have about 1 1/2 ft. of snow with a 3-6 inch base of ice under it. Makes for interesting navigation as you must know!
Having researched this extensively, i.e., 10 seconds on Wikipedia, I recant my hatred of Christmas carols and shall instead focus my vengeful wrath on “Non-Religious Christmas Songs.”
Carols are, as you said, the actual Tidings of Great Joy put to music. That other junk is called a “secularist ditty”. And in case this hasn’t been mentioned yet, Handel’s Messiah is presented at both Easter and Christmas.
And because of its length, you won’t find many live performance of the entire Messiah. Usually just the “Christmas” section at Christmas (with the “Hallelujah Chorus” tacked on at the end to prevent an audience revolt) and the later portions at Easter.
Our community Messiah performance is December 19 and will only include the Christmas section (and “Hallelujah Chorus”).
I think this is all a power play now, people get off on thinking that they brought about “change”. This brand of thinking only becomes a drunk sort of power trip. Next, everything becomes “offensive” and change is all for change sake. Time for people to say enough.
Its okay to spoof drunken Irishmen, Appalachian rednecks, and other white stereotypes in a mean and derogatory fashion. Standard political correctness.
Try to re-enact a historical moment in the truest spirit of friendship without racist intent, however, and you become the target of vile attacks from the left. For God’s sake, we are talking about Indian headdresses and moccasins, not Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians’ mascot caricature.
Go ahead, wear an outfit depicting John Bull of British fame in a humorous or off-color manner. I won’t cry….I have a life.
From the original article:
“…dress up like slaves?” ‘Scuse me? What slaves? The history I remember learning was about the Pilgrims and friendly Indians, coming together, exchanging ideas and knowledge, celebrating the harvest and thanking Almighty God for their plenty.
Looks to me like Raheja “…who specializes in Native American literature,” is the only racist stereotype teaching hate and misinformation to and about her own daughter’s heritage.
Here, here, and here — this last one is written by SENECA-CAYUGA Jerry Dilliner, Chief, and contains many further links! — are good places for her to begin learning more about Native American literature.

it’s been a rather cultural education for me. As an American Irishman raised in south Philly, living in MN has been quite the adventure. BTW, I LOVE driving in snow… I’m the resident crazy guy who will drive anywhere in a blizzard… I’ve tried lutefisk( never again), I love lingonberries with swedish rice pudding and I’m working on the lefse. All in good time. But Thanksgiving and Christmas are great to have in MN…. screw the PC nimrods this year… I’ve had it. We Say Merry Christmas!!!
OT but enjoy folks!

I yust go nuts at Christmas song
Ummmm… EVERYONE is a racist stereotype. Regardless of who you are or what you do, someone hates you because of your race which makes your lifestyle a stereotype.
Is there some kind of bizarre dye in Birkenstocks that make people stupid?
Bart: “Principal Skinner aren’t you going to do something?”
Principal Skinner:’Look Bart, all I know is that no one is better than anyone else and everyone is the best at everything”
JLP
frontierguy for the win–that’s all this is.
OTOH, I expect Ms. Raneja to throw an identical hissy when her daughter is forced to dress like a Muslim and learn prayers to Allah in junior high. Fair’s fair.
The pilgrims needed to “escape prosecution” because they were dirtbag extremists. Women were 2nd class citiziens and children (until 18) were property and subject to arranged marriages. Since they beleived yahweh and/or the white christ controlled everything, everything good or bad was justified. Which is why in their own writen history you can glean such nuggets as (paraphrased), “It pleased god that all the children should die.” They were dimwits who nearly killed themselves off. Too bad they didn’t. That would be some thing to be thankful for.
A few liberal loonies should not be allowed to hijack a traditional event in a school. If this idiot does not like what the majority wants to do, she can stay home and keep her children with her. She has no right to inflict her unpopular and very wrong views on the majority. When are we going to realize that and start demanding the rights of the majority again? Until we do, we will continue to be held hostage by a few wackos.
Ladies and gentlement…I give you yet another prime example of the Liberal Re-Education System at work, whose sole goal is to rewrite history where whitey is bad and evil, little less than the world’s most proficient serial mass murderer and everyone else is merely innocent individuals who were minding their own business and would have made this world a place of peace, harmony and “Kumbaya” concerts 24 hours a day.
This woman claims that this whole thing was demeaning to the children, yet there was no one there who claimed a single child came forward complaining of being “dehumanized”. These are all made up in the minds of these Liberals and they will not be happy until every last tradition in this country has been declared a hate-fest and made illegal.
As a Cherokee, I can speak just as well for my “ancestors” as this woman claims to and I can tell you that the only thing I find dehumanizing, embarassing etc., is every time one of these agenda driven fools steps forward and opens their mouths in an attempt to destroy the very things that make childhood and this country as great as it was.
Someone needs to sprout a pair and tell these creeps to STFU and stop destroying this country and using their children as pawns in their own little plans.
I swear, the only reason that Liberals even let their children survive past the first trimester is so that they have a prop to use in one of their agenda driven protests.
mmmmmm lutefisk! A true ‘norski’ test of manhood. (NEVER AGAIN here either) I spent 14 years in North Dakota, There’s no escape from the lutefisk there either.
However, there will be payback for that Yogi Yorgesson link, yoo betcha.
WooHoo! exactly right, one person wants to make a tradition into an unnecessary negative, she exercised her first amendment rights now go along and realize these little kids and their parents don’t have to tolerate her hate.
So long as the history is taught reasonably accurately, and the costumes are more or less right for the Wampanoag and other tribes from the area, the tradition sounds pretty good to me.
Let’s see: celebrating surviving and working together and thanking God for His blessings–should be VERY PC, and not the subject of bans and protests. (Okay, the thanking God part might get one in trouble, but it’s historically accurate, so we should defend it.) It’s one of the best examples of Indians and European settlers working together in our history.

Since we’ve talked about banning some Christmas songs, may we talk about banning movies too? I nominate “A Christmas Story” as the movie I would most like to burn (legally) the master of.
I am totally in agreement. I hate that movie with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.
There is a poll up for this topic, asking is this really Politically Correct gone too far? It is almost Thanksgiving, I say leave the kids out of the politically self important nonsense.
http://sarah-palin-2012.blogspot.com/
Ya know… if the Pilgrams hadnt been so Politically Correct and tolerant of other cultures, maybe then the British could have followed a scorched earth policy and wiped the indigenous peoples off of the face of the earth - instead of being the world class pansies they are.
How about these “activists” be thankful they even know what an Indians are anymore.
Hmmmmm???? How about we be thankful for what you DO have
Little Drummer Boy duet sung by David Bowie and Bing Crosby, one of my favorites….
I guess “Dominic the Donkey” isn’t on your top ten, then, Chap!! LOL
Not much I can add to the Thanksgiving topic that the other posters haven’t said…what a sad, pathetic fool Raheja is.
The libs are always in high dudgeon and accusing the US of genocide when it comes to the Indian.
My question is, when the “Native Americans” took the land from the natives when they came here, and did they leave any of the indigenous races?
Most likely not. Aztec and Mayans and the like were not merciful people.
You make a very good point.
However, we should not get all exercised over “Xmas.” In the original Greek, Christ is “Christos.” In the Greek alphabet, the first two letters, ch, is represented by the Greek letter “chi”, which is really an “X”. The second letter, “r” is the Greek letter “rho”. Many times, the name “Christ” is represented by two Greek letters combined that look like an “X” intersected with a “P”. This is called the “chi-rho.” Pronounced “ky-row”. Along with the symbol of the fish, early believers in places like Rome would leave the chi-rho to let other believers know there were others around.
So “Xmas” is legitimate. I used to get all exercised over Xmas until I discovered the real meaning. It’s likely the ACLU doesnt know the meaning of “X” either or they’d be on that like a chicken on a June bug.
It is not only CA last year in CO we had two new Teachers in 1st grade. For the previous 10 years the Kindergartners played the Indians and the 1st graders were the Pilgrims.
But not last year, the two new 1st grade teachers decided that they would not play. So the Kindergartners just split up and were one or the others.
Just as a note, I have pulled my now 2nd grader out of the school, and moved!
I would like to ban a phrase: “The last time I checked” should be relegated to the ash bin of history along with “Send a message.”
Oh, yeah, and “get over it” should go too.
My four years at one of the Claremont Colleges was an exercise in patience. As a white male, you had to walk around in public on egg shells to make sure no one could possibly be offended by anything you said. Still goofed up…still remember we had a ladies night party and, wouldn’t you know it, the womyn protested in front of it because we were treating them differently. We still laugh about that one.
I’ll be spending this Thanksgiving with my family at my brother’s house in Plymouth Mass.
As a frequent visitor to Plimoth Plantation (a period village with historic re-enactors showing colonial and Wampanoag life in those thrilling days of yesteryear), I wonder if she would find their displays and interaction hostile to her heritage?
As an aside, the book “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick is the best history of those times that I’ve ever read. Fascinating to read where the names of so many towns, rivers, counties and plazas in this area come from.
Isn’t “Yorgi Yorgessen” actually Stan Freberg?

I’ll say it again: LIGHTEN. UP.
Ever stop to think that if those “dirtbag” “dimwits” hadn’t come here, you wouldn’t be here now?
Don’t let facts get in the way of a good story. Especially if it perpetuates the myth that white people are evil.
I think Raheja is the Seneca word for idiot.
Calling everything “______ Derangement Syndrome” is getting about as old as calling every scandal “______gate” and every addiction “______aholic”.
A number of years ago my sisters and there familes attended the Thanksgiving Parade in Plymouth, MessOfNutsEtts. They were harassed by some of the whitest “Native Americans” she ever saw. One of the fun lads tried to engage one in conversation so she replied “No hablo inglés”.
He said he was sorry and she replied, in English, “Yes you are”. Hard sense of humor my sisters. Being the patriot I am I can still make a turkey by outlining my hand.
Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!
May you have lots of family, friends, and food about.
Thanks Michelle for a great site, and thanks to all who comment fairly.
(Thought I would get the wishes in early as so many will probably be away from their computers tomorrow.)

Actually, Yogi Yorgesson’s real name was Harry Stewart.
I guess the update is that a lot of parents held their kids out of the school today, so that the school district would lose their per child attandence funding.
And a lot of the other parents sent their kids to school IN COSTUME. They werent going to let one parent ruin it for everyone.
This one made my eyes bleed this morning. A commenter at another blog giving thanks TO OBAMA.
Ahem. “New messiah receives thanksgiving” should be the headline.
Christians, we gotta lotta work to do…
