Where are all the Anti-Inauguration activists now?

President Obama’s Chicago machine is kicking into high gear to plan and fund his massive, unprecedented inaugural festivities. He just appointed an inauguration planning committee that includes his hometown cronies William Daley and Penny Pritzker. They’ve got a campaign-style website counting down the days to the massive party in Washington. To deflect attention from the costs, the One’s party planners are patting themselves on the back for limiting inaugural donations to individual contributions of $50,000 — a move they say is historic. But Bill Clinton also refused corporate money for his second inaugural and capped donations at $100. (Bush raised $42 million for his second inaugural, mostly from corporate donors, capped at $250,000.) The DC Examiner recently reported that the Inaugural Celebrations of Hope and Change will strain the district’s beleaguered pocketbook:
Soaring costs expected to accompany huge crowds in town for the Jan. 20 inauguration of Barack Obama could stick cash-strapped Washington, D.C., with a record-breaking bill for services. Security and capacity measures recommended by the District’s congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and others will almost certainly surpass the $15 million the federal government gives to the District each year to defray the cost of events, Norton said.
In 2005, with an estimated 300,000 in attendance, the second inauguration of President Bush cost the city more than $17 million, some of which was reimbursed with federal funds. This year, officials estimate nearly five times that many people for the swearing in of President-elect Barack Obama.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier expects to use an additional 4,000 police officers from all over the country in addition to her 4,000-member force, she said earlier this month. The city’s inaugural budget allows for only 3,000 extra uniformed officers. “There will be an additional amount necessary to handle the unprecedented crowds, and I am now working with my colleagues to deal with that amount,” Norton said, adding “it’s an outrage to have costs incurred for federal events.”
All of which reminded me of the unhinged Left’s protests in late 2004 before the Bush inaugural. He was bashed for continuing the American tradition in a time of war and for holding parties so soon after the southeast Asian tsunami disaster.
Critics are calling on U.S. President George W Bush to scale back the glittering multimillion dollar parties planned this week in honor of his second-term inauguration, saying lavish festivities are unseemly at a time of war.
Bush is to be sworn in Thursday and feted with four days of pomp and party-going at a price tag of about $40 million.
An unprecedented military presence and other security measures will add another $100 million to the cost, to pay for everything from police overtime wages to reviewing stands stretching from the U.S. Capitol building to the White House.
But critics insist that with U.S. troops dying daily in Iraq, the tone surrounding this year’s inaugural celebration should be more modest.
“I would have hoped they would have followed the traditions of President Wilson and President Roosevelt, who at a time of war had a very muted celebration,” said Democratic Representative Robert Menendez, speaking on CNN.
“I think when young men and women are dying we should think about the reality of how we conduct ourselves here at home.”
His comments echoed those of Democratic Representative Anthony Weiner, who, in a letter to Bush, urged the president to redirect some of the $40 million “towards a use more fitting to these somber times — bonuses or equipment for our troops.”
Inaugural committee officials however, point out that the theme of the inaugural fete — “Celebrating Freedom, Honoring Service” — already honors the U.S. military, as well as the president’s role as commander-in-chief.
Bush told reporters last week he sees no problem with either how the money is raised or how it is spent, noting that it has all been raised with private donations.
“There’s no taxpayer money involved in this,” the president said, brushing aside calls that some of the funds be channeled to South Asia for tsunami relief.
“A lot of the people who are coming here to the inauguration have given” to tsunami victims, Bush said.
“I think it’s important to celebrate a peaceful transfer of power. I’m looking forward to the celebration,” he told reporters.
In fact, let me reprint Democrat Rep. Weiner’s entire protest letter from January 11, 2005:
01.11.05
REP. WEINER’S LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUSH ASKING THAT INAUGURAL FUNDS BE USED FOR THE TROOPS
President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500Dear Mr. President:
The festivities surrounding your inauguration later this month are slated to cost $40 million – making this the most expensive inauguration in history. I urge you to re-direct those funds towards a use more fitting to these sober times – bonuses or equipment for our troops.
Precedent suggests that inaugural festivities should be muted – if not cancelled – in wartime. In the midst of World War II, President Roosevelt held his 1945 inaugural at the White House, making a short speech and serving guests cold chicken salad and plain pound cake. During World War I, President Wilson did not have any parties at his 1917 inaugural, saying that such festivities would be undignified.
Furthermore, $40 million could provide substantial support for our troops overseas. For example, we could buy armor for 690 unarmored humvees or provide a $290 bonus for each member of the armed services station in Iraq.
Please re-direct all the funds raised for the inauguration to our brave men and women in uniform.
With an estimated 1.5 million people expected to descend on Washington for the Obama festivities and a federal tax bill alone of at least $50 million, next January’s inauguration will dwarf Bush’s inaugural events and expenses. We are still at war. And, as the Democrats remind us, economic times are tough and average Americans are hurting.
Will Democrat Rep. Weiner demand that Obama go the “cold chicken salad and plain pound cake” route and redirect all the money Obama’s Chicago team is raising to the troops, too? Or has he stopped caring about the brave men and women he exploited in 2005 to score Bush-bashing points with the nutroots?
Will billionaire Mark Cuban, who demanded that Bush donate his inauguration funds to Indonesian tsunami victims, call on Obama to fork over the inaugural funds to victims of the Mumbai terrorist bombings or to distressed American homeowners under water on their mortgages?
Where are all the anti-Inauguration critics now?
Just wondering.
***
While we’re talking about Jan. 20, 2009: It is not just the date of Obama’s inauguration. You’ll recall, as I reported in September, that it is also the release date of PBS anchor/debate moderator Gwen Ifill’s book celebrating the Age of Obama.
Where, pray tell, will Gwen Ifill be on Inauguration Day? Will she be covering the event with the rest of the Obamedia itippy-toeing to get a glimpse of the Obamessiah? Or will she finally do what needs to be done and officially join his White House communications team?

I think these are obscene in a non-partisan way. Incoming presidents should do so in a dignified manner — these orgiastic spectacles of self-aggrandizement are little more than public masturbation.
This coming inauguration reminds me of the celebration when Andrew Jackson, a people President, came into office. The “people” trashed the White House. I expect something of the same. There will be one heckava cleanup when the “people” finish celebrating their loss of freedoms and liberty. The day after, I suspect a big line at the Capitol, of hungover people waiting for their handouts.
We need a email address for Rep. Weiner so we can send him a gentle reminder of his ardent beliefs of this type of spending.
Should be lots of folks at the parties, since so many of nObama’s supporters don’t work. And for sure, Obama will make sure their cars have gas enough to get to DC.
The parties, nor the cost really upsets me so much as the “ID required” requirements, or the fact that the party is for nObama. I’m with graysonret on the ‘trashing’ expectations, too.
We’ll find out sooner than we’ll get a copy of nObam’s birth certificate.
The other side complains about the frivolities of presidential inaugurations, but keep silent when it comes to Barack Obama’s inauguration costs. What else is new? It’s the same double standard applied to everything; something I’ve become numb to already.
The only thing I’m wondering about now is whether Obama will actually ascend to the White House. Supposedly, there’s been a challenge to his election win on account of questions about his natural birthplace; whether it is actually Hawaii or possibly Kenya.
I for one will contribute considerably less than the $50,000 cap BroBama has imposed. Aunti Zeituni can make up the difference.
When our local high school marching band was invited to one of these Inaugurations I kicked in something but Aunti Zeituni did not help with that. I would imagine for the Indonesian and Kenyan governments will be represented–just in case.

Tre is right. You all just don’t understand. It was wrong for Bush to spend all that money because he was evil and greedy, and Cheney was there! But now there is The Obama. We are celebrating his magnificence and good ness, and, well, his being a Lightworker and stuff. Blah, Blah, Blah. /sarc
Liberals never really surprise me anymore. I just picture a spoiled, pampered high school student who is sure they have all the answers. You all know the type.
I can see tourists being handed souvenir $100 bills upon exiting the White House Tour beginning Jan. 20th.
Hopenchange we can believe in! Take THAT to the bank. Not.
Thanks for showing us how to celebrate diversity, ArizonaNeanderthal, but I’d drop America Alone and Americans Come Home in favor something more modified:

Sounds like the ultimate liberal sin of hypocrisy is being committed by the One’s followers. It’s a good thing that on liberal judgment day, they will only have to stand before their boss to account for their “sins.”
I already did. Go here.
Sorry Kevin – I have a small quibble.
It’s impossible for a liberal to be a hypocrite. Since they don’t believe anything, and have only a self directed moral compass, any action is acceptable in their own eyes.
Their moral standards emanate from self and are thus subject to (nothing) while most conservatives recognize that moral standards emanate from some absolute authority (GOD) and thus are immutable.
I noticed they’ve been pushing the Hussein coins on those home shopping channels, too. Who the hell would buy those?
I remember that ignorant socialist, Rep. Weiner, and his offensive letter. I wouldn’t waste my time trying to communicate with any member of the new politburo.
Thank you FruNobulux
Here, something to be thankful for. Perhaps Miss SunShine can still make the Inauguration festivities.
Its what one expects from hypocrites.
AJ,

My New Year’s resolution is to be able to post comments as hilarious and succinct as you!
Excellent post, Michelle. This is the hypocrisy-exposing stuff you do so well, whether it is Ds or Rs being the hypocrites. We shouldn’t hold our collective breath waiting for this story to break on the MSM.
Arizona Neanderthal #18 thanks for bit of great news.
We absolutely refuse to watch this woman in our house it’s great to see she has reaped what she has sown. Karma can be such a harsh mistress.
We are already suffering from fatigue on the anointed ones festivities and every time I see a commercial for a Obamalamadingdong commemorative plate or coin I change the channel. Almost makes me want to cancel our Direct TV service unless we can start buying an ala carte channel package. The only news I watch since the election is Fox Business Channel with the fawning on Fox News more than I can handle.
Millions for a party, but nothing for the moochers it is going to be interesting when they find out the anointed one has snowed them and they will have to pay their own mortgages, bills, and gas for their evil gross polluting cars (according to the greenies).
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE (mo-lone lah-veh) Translation: “Come and Take Them!”
Here is my letter to Rep Weiner:
Dou you recall the following letter you publically wrote to Bush in 2005 prior to his inaugaration? I would suggest you offer the same letter to President-elect Obama before the upcoming inaugaration. Not only does this nation have troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the nation is also currently experiencing, in Obama’s words, …the worst economic situation since the great depression. Don’t you believe your letter is even more appropriate now than ever before?
Here is your letter to Bush. Quote:
(I then quote his letter verbatim)
I won’t be able to make any of the parties or even watch it on TV.I looked at my schedule and my bi-annual sock drawer inventory is on the books.
I don’t see any mention of 50 million dollars in the N.Y. Times article.
Where are all the Anti-Inauguration activists now?
Come on, unlike our ‘esteemed opponents’on the left, those of us on the right are Grown Ups. We handle disappointment and/or defeat with dignity and still take pride in our country. As Dennis Miller said, “Regardless if I voted for him or not, he’s now my president and I would like to see him succeed and America succeed.”
Name one person on the left with the dignity and intelligence to be able to say something like that.
As for the inauguration festivities – I say let them happen! Let’s party! But for Security sake, ESPECIALLY after what happened in India, each person attending the inauguration activities should be required to present valid, certified identification.
Such as a valid Birth Certificate.
Hail Nero, Emperor of Obamination.
If I recall Deval Patrick,Gov of MA also went overboard for his inauguration…That is before he spent a lot of money on his office drapes and a new cadillac for his tenure in our now bankrupt state. Cadillac Deval and Obama have a lot in common beyond their campaign chairman Axelrod………..
I think The One has contracted the AIG party planning people to assist with the celebration. They know how to control costs.
Please don’t become scrooges, begrudging other people’s happiness. The winners celebrate. The losers (that’s you) form the loyal opposition. There will be other Republican Presidents in your lifetimes.
As the war on terror continues, and America is in its worst economic crisis since the Panic of 1837, a little discretion is in order. No one thinks the winners shouldn’t celebrate, but joy is free. This Bacchanalian romp is unnecessary, not to mention, just plain vulgar.

I don’t begrudge anyone’s happiness as long as what makes them happy doesn’t include infringing upon my rights. I shall revel in being a member of the loyal opposition if you understand that my loyalty is to the Constitution of the United States of America, not to the person of the President of the United States. I’ll be just as supportive of Barack H. Obama as you and your fellow travelers have been of George W. Bush. How’s that?

I’ve never understood the need for such grandiose narcissistic events. FamilyWoman and I will be quietly celebrating, yet another peaceful transition of power. We live under the protection of our great Constitution and we pray the new administration will understand it’s perfection.
We have always been an optimistic family.
That is perfect discription for a liberal party.
The terms “humility” and “public servant” ave no meaning in modern political life.
We are getting the leadership we deserve. Pretty sad.
Doubtful. He’s probably going to be busy fighting insider trading allegations.
So, is that “Whiner” or “Weener”?
Sounds like both to me.
Their guy won, of course they want to spend no expense for the inauguration. This is monumental, historic etc, etc!!!
They will reap what the have sewn.
Interview Menendez again. Everytime he opens his mouth on TV, he makes a bigger fool of himself.
I don’t know anyone excited about watching this event. I’ll be watching playoff football.
My immediate thought when looking at these numbers is how many under privileged kids could attend college with just half of these proceeds?
He’s no messiah folks.
Hypocrisy from the left? I’m shocked!

To be sure, there will be a Conservative President( 2012). However, there will be no disgusting pageantry of a coronation the likes not seen since Caligula or Nero. This non experienced , unethical scrawny person is not worthy of a flag passing by him save for the fact he will hold an honored office. That galls me even more. Live with it, I must…. but these will be four years of Carter level pain.
Republicans just need to recognize and quit wringing hands over views, leadership positions and values.
The inconsistencies of liberal and democratic positions, versus Bush’s inauguration is hypocritical. Quite trying to reason with flakes. They are shameless in their hypocrisy, completely unabashed in their ‘new’ positions, and ‘change’ was a crock.
Just lead. No debate, no reaching across the isle. RINO’s need to go be independents and the base needs to lead and quit looking over their shoulder. The opposition does not care a twit about what they said in the past, much less 10 minutes ago.
I shall be more supportive of The One than the anti-Bushies have been of the current President. I want the United States and her citizens to do well, not this particular man. It’s going to be a long four years.
The hypocrisy of the left and professional Democrats is what makes this story, really. Of course, it’s almost at the “dog bites man” level of story, barely worthy of note. Yet, it should be said to remind the critics that we are watching their actions.
Thank you, lgm, for capping “President”–as it should be no matter who is in the office.
Hey, legume, are you still holding your Gloria Steinem pin-up with one hand?
I would like to send a message to Rep. Weiner but unfortunately I can’t!
In his letter to Pres. Bush, he wasn’t speaking for residents of his district. What a loser, afraid to accept email from America.
Oops! “Capping” above meant using a capital letter–not doing harm! I forgot about the slang use of the word until just now.

LGM, you really are priceless!
Where are the tersely stated equivocations likening the expense of the American inauguration to a Capet ball, when the people are suffering so with outrageous debt and deprivation?
Oh that’s right, it’s Obama’s gala so everything’s fine and dandy…hypocritical, but fine and dandy!
Oh, and don’t be too quick to throw that “loser” name about: after the four year hangover ahead of us following this upcoming inaugural celebration, I have a feeling most Americans, not just Republicans will readily identify with that label.
I can understand celebrating an “actual” transfer of power when he became President in 2000. But who was President Bush peacefully transferring power to in 2004, himself? Or did he transfer power to Cheney for the duration of the celebration so he could enjoy the party without interruption?
Problem is, you folks don’t understand that this isn’t an inauguration, it’s a coronation, and they’re always more expensive.
Like a dog returns to its vomit, so lgm returns to his folly.
Kathleen Parker will surely attend an Obama inaugural party. She attended some of the parties at Bush’s inauguration in 2005 and said the security in place was more harsh than anything she’d experienced in countries with dictatorships. Parker never really leaned to the conservative side, as this column from 2004 shows.
I’m sure she’ll be looking for a wink and a hug from the One—she may even steal a kiss.
My feelings, exactly.
Uh, no. But I demand that he give his basketball team to Seattle.
Yep. The late night talk show comedians are licking their chops. They lost ratings when Bill Clinton left office; now they’ve got him back tenfold.
The above is, of course, lgm’s reposting of a comment he left in November, 2004 at DailyKos, berating those who then were bitterly complaining about Bush’s re-inauguration festivities.
Oh wait: it’s not. In those days he was among those complaining.
(And don’t you just love the reference to a “loyal opposition”, from someone in the camp of BDS sufferers who to this day continually vilify the Bush administration as ChimpyMcHalliburtonCheneyHitler?)
fdc, good one! lgm is so stupid that he plagiarizes himself. Not only does he not have an original thought, the thoughts that he does have he has to recycle.
lgm, do us a favor and just take the “kick-me” sign off of your rear end. It’s starting to hurt our feet.
Just once, just once it would be nice if a leftist held themselves to the same level of accountability as they do conservatives.
Can any leftist here simply acknowledge this party is hypocrisy at an astounding level with no caveats attached?
lgm wrote:
lgm, if you had actually, y’know, READ Michelle’s comments instead of just skimming them, you would know that she doesn’t begrudge the winners’ celebration. It was the losers of the 2004 Presidential election (that’s you!) that was doing just that.
Michelle was wondering if your boys Weiner, Cuban, and the others stung by Bush’s re-election would be consistent, and ask Obama to tone down his inaugural in light of a recent tragedy, or if they would be hypocritical, and party like its 1999 as if nothing was amiss.
So far, the answer is what we figured it would be. Thanks for reinforcing our perception of y’all.
$50,000,000 is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the figures that the Democrats used to try to make themselves appear to be the caring individuals and Bush the egomaniac, they also quoted another $100,000,000 to handle all the overtime and extra police involved, as well as military presense and Secret Service etc. that would go into his “festivities”
Considering the large migration of Obama Cult members, that number surely would be far greater to cover an Obama Inauguration. Especially with all the hoopla surrounding the whole “First Black President” thing and all those alleged White Supremicists and other assorted rascists that have been said to be running amock throught this country. I would think that number could easily surpass at least half a billion.
And in these “somber” times too…arguably far more somber than a mere four years ago; With all the banks failing, people losing houses, unemplyment going through the roof, Wall Street tumbling faster than Franken’s hopes of stealing his way into the Senate, credit card companies facing default, two wars going on in the Middle East, renewed terrorist activites throughout the world…how can ANYONE expect to spend all that money watching Obama and his Lady Macbeth dance poorly in ball after ball?
Just think what that money could mean to all those people he claimed he would be giving tax relief to…even those that do not pay taxes? Why, look at the bills that could be paid. Just showing that he is not all talk and splitting that money up with the population of this country would make him appear to actually be a man of his word, could single handedly end the financial crisis this country is facing and keep the streets of Washington D.C. from being clogged with drunken morons chanting pro-Obama slogans.
But it won’t. The same 8 Congressional Democrats that whined to Bush about spending money 4 years ago will be too busy doing their own personal “Superior Dance” to even consider writing similar letters to Obama.
After all, hypocrisy, thy name is Democrats
As I recall, Bush won twice and all we heard from the left was how they were robbed from having their candidate in the White House. Bush wasn’t allowed to do anything right since he hadn’t really won. The left is now so overjoyed at this truely historic event, forgetting that any person labeled as a dem would have won during this cycle. Obama’s downfall will come because he failed to deliver all things to all people. What the left has created, the left will destroy. Unlike Palin, Obama is a creation of the machine who paved the way for his assent to glory. The resulting payback will be huge and next to impossible to deliver. So all you lefties, enjoy the hoopla while it lasts, because the party is over when the governing begins.
Funny, they are so eager to have a black president they used to call Clinton the First Black President which would make b. hussein the 2nd.
But truth be told, they now have a half-black president who could also be called a half-white president.
So when a full black man or woman gets in, will they then be the 1st or 2nd? Since it’s all about color to the leftys.
Just wondering…
Of course, if that person is conservative, they won’t count at all.
I’m just glad to see all the mentions of Sarah Palin no matter what the topic. Don’t forget about her, folks. I have a feeling that when she gets in in 2012, her inaugural will be WAY low-key. Then she’ll start gutting the overbloated federal “budget.”
Can you imagine the looks on the Founders’ faces if they were told that taxpayers would be footing the bill for inaugural festivities — no matter what party?
Hope the Guv and her family had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The majority of us on this blog are thankful that someone with an inate sense of decency and commonsense is still willing to be a public servant.
Yes, those people who were hyper-critical in the past, should be taken to task for not doing the same now.
And, those people who defended inauguration practices in the past, should do so again.
Nothing wrong with being consistent.
I feel quite certain that had Condoleeza Rice been elected on the Republican ticket, her inauguration would have engendered the same enthusiasm for her ascension as the first black president as is being shown for Obama
Are the celebrants going to be allowed to bring their pistols to shoot into the air in honor of Obama’s
coronationI mean inauguration? It’s become de rigueur in certain parts of my city as a celebratory gesture in acknowledging a victory, such as at a sports venue, so I’m sure an auspicious occasion such as The One’s rise to the Presidency would merit the permission (indeed encouragement) of such exuberant expression!Since there is alot of complaint about what the obamamessiah is going to serve, may I suggest Colonel Sanders and watermelon Jelly Belly jellybeans since the left seems to look at everything as somehow racist.

The insane process of constantly reporting on the Left’s hypocrisy continues! I understand that, and probably so do most of your readers.
What is missing is any meaningful plan to change anything. The American people who keep voting for these people are not capable of reasoning. Also, they are probably not going to read this blog.
Something needs to be done to take our country back from these thugs! Exposing hypocrisy is nice, but it’s not going to get the job done.
They may be on drugs.
Nope. Their reverence for The One is too great for them to even consider committing the blasphemy of mocking Him. Letterman likes to show footage of Bush’s verbal gaffes, but don’t expect to see him show footage of Obama’s 57/58 states gaffe, or His Iran is a small and therefore harmless country gaffe, etc.

It seems like to me, that the media hasnt done their usual criticism of an incoming president and are still la la la Obama. It’s starting to scare me because I am starting to realize this man is not who he claimed to be. I understand the love affairs college professors have with him. Of course they do. Only Republicans are supposed to cancel inauguration festivities and send the money saved to support the troops.
Not Demoncats.
That’s because the Demoncats don’t support the troops.

I just want to know ahead-of-time which book The One will be placing his hand on as he takes the oath of office. I can only assume his choices are:
A)
The Bible(in deference to the white grandmother he threw under the bus, prior to her passing) this choice has been removed by Obama’s puppeteers for being to inflammatory and bigoted.B) Prairie Fire
C) The Koran (in deference to his Madrassah days)
D) Dream of My Father
E) What Makes You So Strong? -J.A. Wright, Jr. (probably the copy without the “God damn America” or “Chickens coming home to roost” sermons [I use the term lightly] included)
E) Das Kapital
