Hillary gets Sec of State nod on Monday; Bill will cough up secret donor names
The Clintons refused to tell the public who was donating millions upon millions of dollars to Billy Boy’s charitable foundation and library fund during her presidential run. But in a deal with Team Obama, this long-sought-after disclosure is apparently the price they are willing to pay to secure her Secretary of State nomination.
It will be announced on Monday, according to wire reports:
President-elect Barack Obama planned to nominate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his secretary of state on Monday, transforming a once-bitter political rivalry into a high-level strategic and diplomatic partnership.
Obama will name the New York senator to his national security team at a news conference in Chicago, Democratic officials said Saturday. They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly for the transition team.
To clear the way for his wife to take the job, former President Bill Clinton agreed to disclose the names of every contributor to his foundation. He’ll also refuse donations from foreign governments to the Clinton Global Initiative, his annual charitable conference, and will cease holding C.G.I. meetings overseas.
Bill Clinton’s business deals and global charitable endeavors were expected to create problems for the former first lady’s nomination. But in negotiations with the Obama transition team, the former president agreed to several measures designed to bring transparency to his post-presidential work.
Here’s what we do know about Clinton’s foreign backers as a result of voluntary disclosures, via USAToday from April 2008:
Donors have pledged more than $500 million for construction of the library and for the Clinton Foundation, which administers the library as well as his global anti-AIDS and sustainable development campaigns.
That is an enormous amount for someone to be raising from friends, business partners, foreign governments and interested parties who are either barred from making campaign contributions or limited to the $2,300 maximum. Because of the former president’s unusual position and the sheer size of this conduit into a potential presidential administration, the complete list of donors should be made public.
Some donors volunteered their names at the time of their gifts or when asked by reporters. What little is known about the others suggests that a good number are as interested in influencing public policy, or benefiting from the Clintons’ worldwide ties, as they are in supporting presidential scholarship or economic development.
The Saudi royal family gave $10 million, according to The Washington Post, and numerous foreign governments have given $1 million. The largest contributors appear to include Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú, Canadian mining entrepreneur Frank Giustra and the Lundin Group, a Canadian oil and gas company. Each has publicly pledged $100 million for development projects.
These gifts raise a number of questions, particularly in the case of Giustra, who in 2005 flew with Clinton to Kazakhstan, where his connections to the former president impressed officials enough to win him a lucrative uranium mining contract. They also raise the question of what favors might be sought by other donors who don’t want to be identified.
Clinton argues that the confidentiality he promised his donors should take precedence over calls for transparency…
Never mind all that now. Hillary’s got a Foggy Bottom office with her name on it. Confidentiality, schmonfidentiality.
Should be quite a treasure trove when those full donor lists are released.

The disclosure of contributors is among nine conditions that Mr. Clinton signed off on during discussions with representatives of Mr. Obama; all go beyond the requirements of law. Among other issues, he agreed to incorporate his Clinton Global Initiative separately from his foundation so that he has less direct involvement. The initiative, which promotes efforts to fight disease, poverty and climate change, would no longer hold annual meetings outside of the United States or accept new contributions from foreign governments.
Mr. Clinton also agreed to submit his future personal speeches and business activities for review by State Department ethics officials and, if necessary, by the White House counsel’s office.
The former president’s web of business and charitable activities raised questions about how he could continue to travel the world soliciting multimillion-dollar contributions for his foundation and collecting six-figure speaking fees for himself from foreign organizations and individuals while his wife conducted American foreign policy.
Lawyers for Mr. Clinton and Mr. Obama spent days crafting the agreement in hopes of addressing any concerns about Mr. Clinton’s activities. He had previously said he would do whatever the Obama transition team asked in order to make it possible for his wife to serve without questions. Mr. Obama’s team said it was satisfied that the concessions Mr. Clinton made should defuse any potential controversy. Until Saturday, only some elements of the agreement had become public.
Neither Mr. Obama’s office nor Mr. Clinton’s office would comment. The disclosure of Mr. Clinton’s full agreement on a Saturday night might have the effect of drawing less attention to it while keeping the focus Monday on Mrs. Clinton.

This is not about soliciting donations to the International Red Cross, or other relief agencies.

Bill Clinton was disbarred for practicing law in Arkansas after 2000.

Bill Clinton lost his Arkansas law license for 5 years starting in 2001. He was disbarred from practicing law before the supreme court, but that doesn’t prevent him from becoming a Supreme Court Justice.
There’s only 2 requirements to become a justice; Be appointed by the president, and Be confirmed by a simple majority of the senate.
Best get used to it, we could soon have the first Supreme Court Justice who ordered an armored assault on a church, resulting in the deaths of 55 members of the congregation along with 25 of their children.
Now we know the price of Presidential graft: $100M.
Reminds me of the Clay/Adams “corrupt bargain” of 1824. But, back then, we weren’t dealing with possible attacks against us, nor were we involved in a war. Secretary of State was considered the “heir” to the White House, so I guess she’s running again in 2016. Lord knows how many “corrupt bargains” of her own that her inexperience will cost this country. Countries, around the world, are quite happy, I’m sure. They now have a rookie President and State secretary to “brow beat” with their longtime experienced diplomats. I wonder how long it will be before we have another “Cuban Crisis” to, once again, test a rookie team?
I think this little move by the Clintons is gonna back-fire on them big time. Lets say that six months from now Obama decides he can’t take it any more and forces Hillary out.
Then, the Clintons would be completely out of government with little to show for it. Too bad, so sad.
So the Constitution doesn’t matter?
This still makes no sense to me. What is the upside to Hillary to be the Secretary of State? I think she has a better chance of consolidating a power base of supporters if she stays in the Senate. She can hold her own press conferences, etc. If she goes over to the Cabinet, she is just a pigeon to Obama. I just don’t get why the Clinton’s are in favor of this move.
I am not a Hillary fan, just a very logical person and this whole thing makes no sense to me. It just isn’t logical. And as people have pointed out, Obama can decide to kick her butt to the curb down the road and she is out her Senate seat and his privacy has already been given away regarding his donors. Unless Billy Boy gets her seat in the Senate, I just don’t understand what this is all about.
Karen, it sets her up for a Presidental run in 2012, if Obama falls on his face, or in 2016, as the “heir-apparent”. Neither one of them know anything about foreign affairs. She’s hoping for the experience, to make her a stronger candidate, and, besides, she craves the power and limelight. Perhaps she dreams of being the new Nobel Peace prize winner, negotiating a big agreement…at our expense, of course. It’s better than being a senator bowing to the democrat wishes in the Senate. No glory or power there; just a cog in the wheel.

As soon as the MSM (LSM) started talking about Hill becoming SecState, I began to hear the eye-rolling comments from earnest pundits about how much “experience” she would bring to the position…and I thought, “As compared to whom?” (I guess Obama, but in that case, most Americans would qualify.) Puhlease.
I’m with the posters who say that Billy-Jeff won’t reveal all his donors (who could prove it, after all?), and that Obama is moving her to this slot in order to kick her out of Gov’t. altogether at some point in the future…she is too blinded by power lust to recognize this.

Anyway, I can’t believe Obama would name HRC his SoS – he’s guaranteeing the failure of his administration, due to public in-fighting and double-dealing, and creating a work environment rife with conflicts of allegiance!

His lost his license for 5 years, however, there is no requirement you have to be a lawyer or a judge to become a supreme court justice. The president can appoint anyone, and the Sentate just needs to “advise and consent”. Advise and consent has turned into filibuster if you don’t like someone just on the basis of not liking him.
It’s gotten uglier and uglier over the decades as that branch of the government is now considered by liberals to be the most powerful out of the three.

Clinton was governor of Arkansas which, during his time, ranked 49th in just about everything, including education.
He has also done some charitable work with your fellow buddy Clinton. Considering the man is 85 years old, I think you need to give it a break.

There is no need for PE Obama to release the donor list. Having the list allows the Obama Administration to avoid potential conflicts of interest, or at least see them coming.
I am not sure an employer would publicly release everything they have learned about an employee.

A technical question, then, in her case–once she resigns from the Senate. Has this question come up before when sitting senators were appointed to other positions–I’m thinking when William Cohen was made Secretary of Defense?

Obama’s nomination of Hillary Clinton for SoS is pathetic but not surprising. It certainly isn’t the change that he promised. Hopefully his supporters aren’t so mesmerized by his charisma that they fail to see that they were misled. It’s going to be an interesting four years….
Hillary grew up in Chicago and knows full well how the machine works. Chicago is where she learned to be vindictive. Before Hope/Change went for an IL senate seat, Hillary eyed IL, only to learn that she shouldn’t return, so she settled on NY. Chicago is not a place for strong, annoying women. If she decides to fight Hopey, it will be fun to watch. Dealing with her is a no win situation.

So Billy Boy Clinton raises money-how much does he give? If Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s released records are correct I gave more money to charity than the two of them combined. President Bill Clinton drew criticism for claiming deductions on donated underwear and socks.
In 2004 Barack Obama gave $2500. With the release and re-release of his books in 2005 and 2006 his upped his giving to $77,000 and $60,000. Not a large percentage for a now millionaire. The devout Catholic Joe Biden preaches that we should be our brother’s keeper. In 2005, out of an adjusted gross income of $321,379, Joe Biden gave $380. Not exactly tithing is it?
Your beloved fund raiser William Jefferson Clinton rakes in millions on speaking fees. Between 2000 and 2007 the Clinton’s earned $100 million and gave a good 10% to Charity-their Charity – the Clinton Foundation of which they, Chelsea Clinton and Gloria Clinton were paid officers. President and Senator Clinton resigned as officers when Miss Hillary announced her run for President.
The Clintons, Bidens, and Obamas do not impress. They do remind me of the Pharisee and Widow-but that is not a good thing. Or perhaps King David and Bathsheba and Nathan’s parable of the rich man who took away the one little ewe lamb of his poor neighbor.
But I too have a way to fund a World Poverty Initiative: Give such a project ALL the wealth of the damn fools who think it would work. “Sell all you have and give to the poor”. Or the damn fools could start businesses, create jobs that provide goods and services. THAT is how you create wealth and defeat poverty. Charity is a good and wonderful thing and we Christians are bound to do so-but we are NOT to yolk ourselves to unbelievers doing it and we are NOT suppose to take the other guys money or ewe lamb.

I don’t see this working for either one of the four major players. Obama loses, Biden loses, Bill loses and Hillary loses.
Biden just took a major step down the influence scale in the Obama administration. His “foreign policy expertise” consists of being wrong on almost everything for the last 3 decades.
Hillary and Barack can’t stand each other. These two will be at odds with each other in months. She has no real foreign policy experience other than the “sniper” in Bosnia.
This is like turning over the treasury department to, well, Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke!
I predict that Hillary will serve no longer than 24 months.
I see an administration and congress so corrupt, it will make Grant’s administration look good, when it’s all done. Prediction: If Obama wins 2nd term, a movement will gain strenght to overturn the 22nd amendment.
I wouldn’t count on it.
The Clintons and the Obamas have some things in common, not the least significant of which is that they’re lawyers — and thus by default well-versed in language arts like prevarication, the negative pregnant, and word-parsing in general.
So, it’ll come as no surprise if the promise of “disclosure” extends only to the Hope-a-Dope team and not to the public.
The Clintons were the past masters of raising foreign funny-money — until Hope-a-Dope came along and easily eclipsed them. But while Team Hope-a-Dope has nothing to learn from Team Clinton about raising big bucks from illegal sources, I’m sure the Clinton donor list will contain some nuggets that Hope-a-Dope hasn’t tapped into yet.
And that — not the interest of the public in full disclosure — is why they want to get their paws on that list.
So will the Republicans block and oppose all of Capt. Big Ears’ nominations the same way that the Democrats ave done to President Bush for the last 8 years?

Nobody on the left or in the MSM will even broach the subject of how they have prostituted themselves to domestic and foreign sources. If George Bush makes a couple of million in retirement giving speeches anywhere I think the left and MSM will be all over him for “profiting” from his office or “selling the Presidency.” There will be no end to the charges against the man. BDS will live on for years and years.
But, it is okay for Bill and Al to sell themselves and shake down the rest of the world for nearly 1/2 billion dollars. Can anyone on the left or in the MSM spell HYPOCRISY? Double standard? Why, of course!
