Deadbeat watch: Troopers still owed overtime for DNC

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 1, 2008 10:56 PM

CBS 4 in Denver reports that law enforcement officers have gone three months without getting paid for overtime costs related to policing the Democratic National Convention. Who’s looking out for the troopers?

Show them the money:

Colorado state troopers say it’s been more than three months since the Democratic National Convention and they have yet to get compensated for their overtime.

The economy is bad and the holiday season is here and the extra money or time off that some troopers counted on has yet to be approved.

There seem to be a lot of factors of work in the hold up, including an extraordinary event, troopers were used from around the state, and asking federal government to foot the bill.

“Are a lot of the troopers wondering, ‘Where is the money?” CBS4 investigator Rick Sallinger asked Jeremy Gudday with the Troopers Association.

“I think that’s a fair question for our members and I think that’s a question that people have been concerned about,” Gudday responded. “Given the DNC was in August and here we are coming into December.”

The State Patrol says federal funds will cover the more than $150,000 involved.

“Every member of the organization that worked the event is going to be compensated,” Sgt. John Hahn with the State Patrol said. “Either monetarily or they are going to be compensated with time.”

If any of the officers owed backpay were among those on hand when Michelle was mobbed at the Mint…well, I hope those particular officers do NOT get paid.

Obama had a couple of hundred million left over. Couldn’t he help?

Oh yeah, he was too busy buying his minions new laptops, Blackberry’s and giving them an extra month’s pay.

Typical. Liberals like to spend, but don’t like to be responsible for payment.

Nope. You can only stretch a billion dollars so far.

I don’t see why this has taken this long. I’m no union lover, but if those guys worked the OT, then the DEPARTMENT has to pay them. The State of Colorado can beg for a reimbursement later. I think they should start developing a case of the blue flu or start a job action (slow down the pace and do everything by the book). Like I said, I’m no union thug, but I don’t like getting cheated out of pay either. Especially if I had to babysit a bunch of unruly moonbats.

    Show them the money:

Does it matter from which country? Considering Urkel’s online fundraising, maybe they won’t mind being paid in, Lira, Shekels, Rials, or Euro’s.

Same here. But if they did it voluntarily, then what? I still think the department should be hitting up Urkel for some scratch.

Sounds to me as if the state agencies jumped at the chance to be a part of the “festivities” and didn’t get a contract from the DNC, so now they’re left holding the bag, whether it’s individual officers or departments as a whole. Either way, it wasn’t a smart move, given the Democrat track record on compensation for (legal) services rendered.

Officers (or deputies) don’t just go out on their own and seek overtime at an event. The City of Denver more than likely asked for support from the staties for traffic and crowd control. The officers were probably notified in advanced at role call or there was some sort of OT sign up sheet going around. Whether the OT was mandatory or voluntary, is irrelevant. It is the State of Colorado’s responsibility to compensate their officers on time, i.e. on the next pay period. If I work an event that is “contracted” by the state or private association, or what ever, or I respond to a mutual aid call, I don’t have to wait until some other entity pays my agency before I get a paycheck.

Does anyone else wonder how many of those Troopers voted for ‘Change’. I’m sure they thought the ‘Change’ was actually money!

For those Troopers that voted for ‘Change’ are getting what the voted for, screwed.

For those Troopers that did not vote for ‘Change’, well, live and learn.
