I have just a few comments about the Michelle Obama Thank You Ring thing (assuming it’s true), and then I’ll get out of the way and let you have at it.
1) Remember when MichelleO cracked her joke about how women would use the $600 stimulus check to buy earrings?
Man, I thought that was a sign of elitism run amok. But now we’re talking about a $30,000 piece of rhodium just for doing what a supportive spouse should do? Out of this world:
She loves her inexpensive outfits from the mall, but Michelle Obama will soon be sporting something much fancier than anything you’ll find at J. Crew. It is being reported that President-elect Barack Obama is buying his wife a new ring for her support during the election. A spokesperson for top Italian designer Giovanni Bosco allegedly said that President-Elect Barack Obama is looking to purchase a $30,000 Harmony ring made of rhodium and encrusted with diamonds as a thank you gift to Michelle. The future First Lady is expected to receive the ring just in time for her husband’s January inauguration ceremony. One of the world’s rarest and most precious metals, only about 25 tons of rhodium are mined each year, setting the price at over $7,660 per ounce — or about ten times the cost of gold.
2) Is it really a good idea to have let this slip just days after a Wal-Mart temporary worker died in a hyper-consumerist stampede?
3) Speaking of bad timing, is it really a good idea to be crowing about this extravagant present when — as Barack Obama so ably reminded us in campaign infomerical before Election Day — Americans are hurting in the midst of tough economic times that will only get tougher?
4) What is it with some women who feel entitled to receive lavish presents from their husbands for work that should be its own reward? Reminds me of this ridiculous “Push Present” phenomenon involving women who expect big-ticket gifts from their husbands for bearing their children (see Dr. Helen’s column here).
Criminey.
If Michelle thinks she should receive a present for contributing to the successful Obama campaign, what gift is she getting him for winning it?

Over the past 30 or 40 years, can anyone name 10 Senators (single termers don’t count) who became members of the Senate having a “middle class” networth and then left the Senate not considered wealthy?
The pay and cost of living in the DC area for a Senator is not conducive to becoming wealthy.
If they had to follow the same ethical standards regular government employees have to follow, they’d never leave wealthy. Regular employees are not allowed to accept gifts of any kind over $50.00 or so – it was $5.00 for a very long time.
As to Obama, a State Senator makes even less.
Why doesn’t he just take the ring out of his nose and give her that one?

This reminds me of how the AP reacted to Palin’s clothes bought by the RNC.
We are pointing out hypocrisy of the Dems by pointing this out. If this had been Bush, the AP would have gone all “French revolution” on his butt. “The people starve while the King gives an expensvie ring to his wife!!”
I would like to think that this news will get out to all the Democrats that did without or put aside something so they could donate $5 to them. Not going to happen though.

Obama’s on record telling Michelle they didn’t need to get married, even if they were going to have children. But for some reason, he did decide to marry her. So whose idea was the expensive ring? His, hers? Marriage, not important. Jewelry, important. Was the label “baby’s mama” so far off? Maybe we’re making a big thing out of nothing. Hard to know what’s in their minds.
This points out several things, Kevin – most obviously, as I noted, Obama’s tone-deaf “out of touchness”. If nothing else, one of his PR people show have given him a clue.
Likewise, he clearly has no idea of how he keeps playing into the “ghetto thug/pimp” stereotype and the Jefferson’s “Moo-hoovin’ On Up” image. It’s embarrassing to even watch.
At any rate, the lesson here is that such things vividly illustrate Obama’s ongoing lack of better judgment and good sense. Those are not good qualities in any “guy”.
I completely agree that it is trivial. As in, let’s all get a grip here. It’s their money, it’s their business, it’s their relationship.
I didn’t vote for Obama and he scares the hell out of me, but there are plenty of other things to discuss that are far more substantive than whether or not he bought his wife a gift.
Most of you on this post sound just like the angry left. Get over it. The annointed one won. Now go spend some money and get this economy working again. Thank you.

I am going to be contrary here. I don’t care how Barack spends HIS money. He wrote two books and earned several million. It is his money and he can spend it as he pleases.

If the money used to purchase the ring was his money, then it is nobody’s business to criticize him buying a ring for his wife. All of this carping in this post sounds like a whole bunch of class warfare sour grapes — everything the left tries to incite in the public.
If there is existing evidence to suggest that the money for the ring was obtained improperly, then let’s see that evidence and discuss THAT —- otherwise, you should devote your column to more pressing issues, like the psychopath running the Treasury Department.

Barry has constantly criticized George Bush with the specious charge that he responded to 9/11 by telling people to “go shopping” (which falsely implies that that is all that Bush did, and that shopping is immoral).
Apparently the proper response was to 9/11 was to “sacrifice” and become self-righteous community organizers, like the Obamas and all those people who work for ACORN.
Yet, in a flagrant act of hypocrisy, Obama is responding to the recession and his election by going shopping for bling for his wife.

I do not resent the Obamas in the least for being able to afford luxuries like a multimillion dollar home and expensive jewelry – they’ve earned the right to such spoils through their own hard-work and ambition.
